by Allan A. Madrilejos his is us staying forever young—or gracefully aging if you’re into counting years and such. you can likewise say this is us taking our sweet time to savor the gratifying pauses that come our way. We’ve been fortunate enough, afer all, to still be standing tall today, making history any chance we get. Fifteen years ago, the very thought of us getting praised for our contributions to Pinoy pop culture had never really crossed our minds. Ever since issue no. 1, our only goal has always been to come out with a monthly issue worthy of our bylines. Behind the scenes, we hustle, work hard, and make full use of our hands and brute strength to deliver an issue that’s always way better than our last. We also never stop dreaming up eye-popping features (or “content” as you kids now call it) and mind-blowing concepts for cover shoots, calendars, specials, books, events, and magazine redesigns. In the process of all this finetuning, we’ve helped to either jumpstart or revitalize the careers of many a star—Patricia javier, diana zubiri, the Viva Hot Babes, Aubrey miles, Angel Locsin, Katrina Halili, Cristine Reyes, sam Pinto, jennylyn mercado, marian Rivera, and so many more accomplished actresses today. What has kept us going through the years—aside from our wholehearted willingness to evolve with the times and learning from our mistakes—is our readiness to collaborate with only the best. In constantly partnering with both the country’s master and up-and-coming photographers, seasoned celebrity stylists, make-up artists, and open-minded managers of our chosen stars, we continue to capture and produce sensational and tasteful pictures that become events in themselves and the ultimate in #squadgoals high. Sexiest: 15 Years of Stunning FHM Women—A Visual Celebration is the book that best punctuates our journey so far. this is us stopping time so we can all appreciate the inspirational and transformative power of photography. Feel free to relive the memories, ladies and gentlemen. But remember not to get stuck. It won’t be long before our journey starts all over again.

“ FH m shouldn’ t feel like looking at p or n . FHm should elevate the t a s te of a ma n a nd should celebrate women .”

“ It wa s a ll a b out how we c a n ma ke a r t in whatever circums t a nce we found ourselve s , whether the shoot wa s done on loc ation or aga ins t a ba re s tudio wa ll . We went out to ma ke a r t . It ’s not a b out the clothe s or the ma keup . It wa s a b out the concept . Concept should a lways b e k ing .” XA N D E R A N G E L E S It’s only been 15 years but a lot has changed in the field of photography— styling, technology, equipment—and Xander Angeles has seen them all. “my first FHm shoot was with Ana Capri, and it was nerve-wracking. not only was I going to shoot one of the country’s hottest stars back then, but I was going to do it with only one roll of 120 transparency film, with only 10 shots to spare per layout, and another roll of Polaroids for test shots,” he recalls. He did the job and went on to become one of FHm’s trusted photogaphers. Is it any easier for him now that technology has given him unlimited rolls of “film”? “not really. the rules are still the same. It was all about how we can make art in whatever circumstance we found ourselves, whether the shoot was done on location or against a bare studio wall. We went out to make art. It’s not about the clothes or the makeup. It was about the concept. Concept should always be king.” Xander owns Edge of Light studios Inc., Black tank Creatives, and has ventured into other businesses outside of photography as well. His word of advice to keep up with the times: “do it! this is your chance. grab it and embrace it. Enjoy the things you love while it lasts.” —Pong Castillo

M ARK NI CDAO “I wanted something that would stand out… something super sexy yet unique,” says top photographer mark, when asked what his game plan was when he had landed his first FHm gig. “FHm was—and still is—the best-selling magazine, and I was still trying to figure out what I could offer to the magazine that was different from what you’d normally see in it,” he says. It didn’t take a while for mark to figure it all out—now you see his works in magazines, billboards, online, everywhere. He found a way to stand out. “Back then, it was an era of overt sexy, like, Pam-Anderson sexy. But later on, people learned to appreciate less skin and more mystery. shoots are moodier and more conceptual,” he says. mark believes that the future of men’s magazine should be more detailed and specific—in production design, styling, and even grooming. men’s magazines are bound to be more complicated because people have easier access to anything sexy now. “FHm shouldn’t feel like looking at porn. FHm should elevate the taste of a man and should celebrate women.” mark is a photographer under At East | jed Root. —Pong Castillo

“ guys wa nt it a s raw a s p ossible . A nd to get that from a model , you have to ma ke her fe el like she’s not in a photo shoot . m en wa nt a more rea lis tic exp er ience , something more p ersona l .”

“ t hrough the yea rs , I b elieve FHm is a ble to sha p e the way the readers look not jus t at men’s maga zine but at women in genera l .” D OC M A R L O N P E C J O many artists have struggled in staying relevant with the ever-changing taste of consumers and appreciators of their respective art forms, but doc marlon Pecjo makes it seem so easy. “I remember every shoot I’ve done with FHm as a unique experience, and every single girl I’ve shot has motivated me to do well,” says doc marlon. But doc marlon admits that the inspiration to create the fine art he produces for FHm did not come from his creativity alone. doc says, “Every girl, every photographer, and every artist who has contributed to the magazine has immensely influenced the look of the magazine. And, of course, every reader has also greatly affected the way we do things.” doc marlon prides the work he has done for FHm. He sees the magazine not only as a relevant source of entertainment for its fans, but also as trendsetter in the industry and the country. “through the years, I believe FHm is able to shape the way the readers look, not just at men’s magazines, but at women in general,” he says. “I think the readers want a dynamic experience when they read the magazine, they want interaction; they want to get involved.” doc marlon Pecjo is a premier photographer for numerous magazine titles. He also dabbles in fashion and beauty photography. —Chise Alcantara

PAOLO PI NEDA It’s one thing to work to achieve a dream, a totally different thing to actually be living it. Before becoming one of the country’s top fashion photographers and commercial directors, Paolo was once a fan of FHm. “I still remember just looking at the Patricia javier photos when I was in college,” he recalls. “I never thought I would get to shoot for FHm. It was surreal. shooting for the best men’s magazine in the country is a privilege for any guy.” Fourteen years and a handful of FHm covers later, Paolo says that he is still as excited as the first time. one of Paolo’s more notable work for FHm was the 2007 Katrina Halili and Cristine Reyes calendar, shot in subic, which happens to be the most memorable for him, too. “It was the most adventurous shoot I’ve done, with two of the hottest and biggest tV babes at the time,” he says. “If you still have a copy of that calendar, you have a gem.” When asked what kind of photographs draw people in these days, he says it’s the “unintentional sexy.” “guys want it as raw as possible. And to get that from a model, you have to make her feel like she’s not in a photo shoot. men want a more realistic experience, something more personal. you should see the sexiness of the model from inside out.” Paolo is one-half of media production house midnight Bonkers. He travels to new york often for fashion, editorial, and commercial jobs. —Pong Castillo

LIFE B EFoRE , dURIng , A nd B E yond t H E 10 y E A R s o F F H m

by L ou r d d e Veyra ou can credit the success of FHm to a hundred factors. you could point to the death of the skin flick, of course. But then again, who needs cinemas when you’ve got a dVd player and an Internet connection? And while we’re at it: Who needs a meaningful relationship when you’ve got tube8.com and redtube? But we’re getting ahead of our story. this article should have been all about ten years of FHm Philippines. But those ten years might easily have been about quantum leaps in our country’s attitude towards what we had once thought of as an eternally thorny issue—sex. In a way, the success of FHm is reflective of a shift in Pinoy cultural values. you could say that it is an indicator of changing sexual mores. I am not about to blame the magazine with regard to the alarming spike in HIV cases (It’s the fault of those horny call center agents). Wait. maybe “reflective” might not be such an accurate word. tits and ass will always be a hit regardless of eras and zeitgeist. But to appreciate all these, you’d have to imagine a Philippines before FHm. there was a time when as kids, all we had as sources for boobs and butts was the national geographic back issues. or the Avon lingerie catalogue. the male populace was truly content with cheap blackand-white publications with funny names like tiktik and jingle Extra Hot. this was the ‘70s and the ‘80s. these magazines had significant flesh content, modeled by oftentimes hairy starlets or whoever it was the photographer dragged out of a Quezon Avenue massage parlor at four in the morning. But despite the rather seedy look of crudely printed ink on rapidly yellowing paper, the editors ensured that somewhere

y

102 FH M

between skin and skin would be enjoyable feature articles. those stories and columns definitely reeked of tabloid breath, but the tagalog was arresting. the command of the language, in fact, was more than you can say about today’s crop of reporters in tabloids, primetime news programs, and Am radio. Rumor has it that those flesh rags were staffed by prizewinning poets and novelists looking for added sources of beer budget (nothing like alcoholism and poverty to make writers write like angels). But those magazines died out in the ‘90s. they died along with komiks, songhits, and the showbiz rag. What did not die, though, was the bomba flick, which eventually transmogrified into the st film of the ‘90s. the major st muses of that time were Cristina gonzales and gretchen Barretto, before the, uhm, good life. Cheap and easy to produce and even easier to sell, st flicks were being relentlessly churned out by the industry like buy-one take-one hamburgers. the st even went as far as pretending it was a serious art film. things went supernova with Rosanna Roces. then it was downhill from there—right straight into the garbage bin. And when sm cinemas announced that they would no longer show such “immoral” fare, that was the last nail on the coffin. there was a time when stripping for the moving/unmoving camera (we’re talking about women, of course) was an act of desperation. But thanks to glossy pages and fancy photography, an invitation to pose for FHm suddenly became a badge of honor. How does one magazine change perspectives? you might say that the attitudinal changes had already happened way, way before, and that it was merely a matter of time before something—be it a television show or a publication—provided a platform on which to synthesize them. Enter FHm Philippines. I seriously doubt if the majority of Pinoys are concerned about

Photographed by mark nicdao

the magazine’s British provenance. For some reason, there’s something truly Filipino about FHm. the industry term for its ilk is “lad magazine,” which is interchangeable with “men’s magazines.” However, “lad” is an intriguingly apt word. the conventional view is that deep down inside, Pinoy men—no matter how macho or how powerful they are—are hormonal adolescents, certified mama’s boys. there is also something charmingly apt about the whole concept. Everytime you open an issue of FHm, you are drawn into a timeless world of bikinis, cleavage, cars, beer, gadgets, among others. And it never grows old. It is a world that seems to be eternally 21 years of age. Which is why opening a Philippine edition of, say that other adult magazine popular in the ‘80s, suddenly did not seem like the wisest of decisions. mention its name to today’s adolescents and they’ll go, “Play-wha?” that is now merely a soft-focus phantasm of nostalgia. It harks back to a past generation for whom the sight of pubis and nipples was already the apex of carnality. I probably belong to the last generation of schoolboys who had known the magazine as something you hid between textbooks to slip into your seatmate’s bag. But we also knew that there was far nastier stuff available. there were magazines that went for pure gynecological gold: pages upon pages of glisteningly moist, almost crustacean nastiness. Who the fuck needs the new Ray Bradbury short story when you’ve got vaginal closeups? sadly, FHm still doesn’t offer gynecological closeups. But it offers the next best thing, or come to think of it, maybe something infinitely better: Celebrity skin. And I don’t just mean desperate startlets or whoever it was the editor/photographer dragged from a shadowy Quezon Avenue corner at four in the morning.

these are women you see on tV and magazines, although some of them, I will have to admit, look like they were sauna-bath refugees. It is believed that most Pinoy men easily get tired by the sight of oyster-like oB-gyn photography, and would rather revert to the distant comfort of the unattainable object of desire. the familiar face and body, presented with just the right amount of tease, all the more titillating by what is concealed. never mind that the majority of artistas posing for the magazine do not normally tend to be generous with their flesh. An FHm gig, after all, is merely viewed as one of the avenues for further stardom. It is enough that a portion of the fantasy is sold. then there’s magic of print: the tactile. While you can do it with your laptop (but that’s rather freaky), you can’t bring your desktop computer with you to the bathroom. you can’t hide your laptop between the covers of Crime and Punishment. the next ten years of FHm—which is to say, the sexual climate of the next decade—are something to look forward to. But should we be alarmed? Rufa mae Quinto has already appeared twice. But it seems that her dumb non-blonde shtick—in spite of those breasts—is getting to be tiresome. From an FHm perspective, it may have sacrilegious connotations: man does not live by breasts alone. But then again, a pair of tits is not a simple thing. It’s a complex subject matter. there is hope. For every Rufa mae Quinto that settles in vague matrimonial bliss, there’s always a shaina magdayao, now equipped with a more mature (read: willing to take more clothes off) outlook in life. Life goes on, and life is beautiful indeed.

af ter word

by Erwin Romulo f there is anything to be said about the repeated proclamations about the death of print, it is that either it is suffering from a lingering but perhaps fatal illness or that it is a zombie art form. make no mistake about it, every decade in recent memory has trumpeted its demise but yet it is still here, still alive or maybe undead. magazines in particular get so regularly “killed off” by one pundit or another it makes you wonder if it’s not all driven more by a spurned Eros rather than by a particularly inept thanatos. the mention of the name of the god of desire is apt, if only because the celebration of beautiful women has perhaps been around as long as magazines have been made. It is made flesh by the fact that it is printed. It is tactile to the touch. Even the smells of a newly-printed magazine’s paper has known to be a turn on. For many it has even taken on an air of devotion. In all its years of publishing, FHm Philippines has enraptured, engaged and articulated the desires of readers the world over. this is no idle boast. After all, we do have the most beautiful women. And it isn’t limited to men either. As surveys have shown a significant number of women regularly pick up an issue. It is a collective dreaming that can only be good for the health of any society. After all, the expression of what makes us all inherently human should always be cherished if not protected. only then can we truly be open to discuss what matters to us most. no, print isn’t dead. If anything it is sleeping, like some gorgeous babe under enchantment, and it only takes a kiss to bring her to life. that happens each time you turn a page. It is nothing less than an act of love.
