HLB Values The hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) is an expression of the relative simultaneous attraction of a surfactant for water and oil, which is a comparison of the hydrophilic to the lipophilic portion of the surfactant molecule. HLB values of nonionic surfactants range from around 1 to 20. The miscibility of a surfactant in water is a guide to its HLB value.
