CNC vs. CONVENTIONAL MACHINING Reduction in set-up time. Reduction in lead-time. Better accuracy and repeatability. Machining of complex parts. Constant cycle time.

3 MAIN COMPONENTS OF A CNC
The Man Machine Interface (MMI) The Numerical Control Kernel (NCK) The Program Logic Controller (PLC)

CNC PART PROGRAMMING Based on the same standard developed with the early NC’s. Composed of G&M code programs; low level codes to describe tool motion and switching instructions.

CNC SOFTWARE EVOLUTION
A new interface language was developed: STEP-NC This new language differs from G&M codes since it is not machine-specific and it gives the machine much more information on the part being machined since it contains information on both the part geometry and the process plan.

MULTI-AXES CNC MACHINES The Problem with
MULTI-AXES
A cause for concern with multiple axes CNC is control error, which increases for each additional axes of motion introduced. This ultimately leads to lack of precision during operation. Due to its criticality, a great body of research has been conducted to tackle collision avoidance and detection problems, and a number of methods have been developed.

CROSS-TECHNOLOGY INTEROPERABILITY Refinement of higher level process information from NC programs. A programming system is implement to recognize CAD file data. From the recognized features the program generates a process plan and completes a STEP-NC file to enable a STEP-compliant chain solution.

HYBRID CNC MACHINES Combining additive manufacturing with CNC machining to reduce time, cost and NC programming effort. Combining CNC machining with laser cutting to provide a process with very low tool wear and high product precision. Ultrasonic machining is also employed in conjunction with CNC drilling to reduce drilling torque.

Machining Special Surfaces The Problem with
SPECIAL SURFACES
FREEFORM SURFACES: Investigations place their focus on the three major aspects of freeform machining, these being tool geometry, tool path generation, and tool orientation recognition. ENVELOPING SURFACES: Improvements are motivated by problems such as tool paths that fail to take into consideration the characteristics of an enveloping surface in reference. SWEPT SURFACES: Proposed methods offer heightened efficiency and accuracy when compared to traditional approaches that rely on pre-processing steps with piece-wise circular and linear tool path approximations.
