SureFire Sound Suppressors
SOUND SUPPRESSOR STORY Our story begins—more accurately, the sound suppressor story begins—at the turn of the century, when Hiram Maxim introduced his Maxim Model 1909. For the next 93 years, sound suppressor designs remained virtually unchanged, and so did the way they were used: as specialized devices for short-range, semiautomatic-fire applications. A tool to be attached to a weapon on missions where the target was close and a protracted gunfight was unlikely. But things changed in 2002 when SureFire formed its Suppressor Division. We approached the task of building a better suppressor the way we do everything: Build the best, no matter what the cost. Our mission? To create a lightweight sound suppressor that effectively attenuated sound and reduced a weapon’s flash/dust signature without any sacrifice in the weapon’s performance. A suppressor durable enough to leave permanently attached yet versatile enough to remove and re-attach in seconds. Also important, any small shift it produced in the weapon's point of impact should be consistent—the same amount and direction, no matter how many times the suppressor was attached and detached.
A few years, and one state-of-the-art manufacturing facility later, SureFire has accomplished everything we set out to do. Our compact, lightweight suppressors are high-performance equipment that significantly attenuate sound; typically improve a weapon's accuracy; produce zero or minimal shift in a weapon's unsuppressed point of impact; consistently repeat any shift; and are more durable than the barrels they're mounted on. They make fulltime suppressor use not only possible but in most cases preferable. Today, SureFire suppressors help warfighters enjoy a tactical advantage over their enemies, help protect the hearing of law enforcement professionals, and allow civilians to enjoy shooting with state-of-the-art suppressors that are every bit as sophisticated as their expensive firearms. Our story has a happy ending for all — except for bad guys and other suppressor manufacturers.

BARRY DUECK SUPPRESSOR DIVISION DIRECTOR Behind every successful organization is a passionate leader rallying the troops to get the job done. Barry Dueck is that leader for SureFire’s Suppressor Division. A former Marine, SureFire Institute founding instructor, and a nationally ranked IPSC multi-gun shooter, Barry lists his proudest accomplishment as providing our nation’s military and law enforcement professionals with suppressors that give them a significant advantage over the enemy. Barry had been designing suppressors for years before taking the reins of SureFire’s new division. Dr. John Matthews, SureFire’s founder and president, offered Barry full support with one condition: Do for suppressors what SureFire did for flashlights and weapon-mounted lights—build the absolute best, establishing the standard by which all others are measured. Barry and his team have not let John down…much to the chagrin of enemies of freedom and law and order around the world.

THE SUREFIRE
There are sound suppressors, and there are SureFire sound suppressors—the world’s finest. SureFire suppressors enhance the benefits of regular suppressor use and add even more by providing the highest level of performance, reliability, and durability available.
High-Performance Sound Attenuation SureFire suppressors are equal or superior to competitive sound suppressors in effectively attenuating sound, generally reducing a weapon's sound signature to well below the OSHA 140 dB maximum safe level. The actual amount of sound reduction depends on many factors, including the weapon, the ammunition fired, elevation, atmospheric conditions, testing methodology, and more. SureFire uses its own state-of-the-art equipment to measure suppressor performance — not a claim every other suppressor manufacturer can make. So when you read a statement like “Our suppressor reduces a weapon’s sound by X decibels,” don’t buy it. They’re just making noise.
Fast, Easy, No-Tools Attachment Slide the suppressor over the muzzle adapter and secure the cam ring at the base. It’s on and off in less than five seconds. No tools, no super-human strength required.
Solid, Secure Attachment When you attach a SureFire Fast-Attach® suppressor to your weapon, it stays mounted, solidly and securely. It doesn’t loosen with firing or vibrations like other suppressors can.
Minimal Weight and Length SureFire suppressors are designed to be small and light and to add as little length to your weapon as possible. And thanks to the high-temp alloys used, you don’t sacrifice any strength or durability for weight reduction.
Zero or Minimal Point-of-Impact Shift A SureFire suppressor produces little or no change in your weapon’s unsuppressed point of impact. Which means, for most purposes, you don’t have to alter your point of aim or re-zero your weapon after attaching one.
Consistent Shift If there is any minor shift in point of impact, you can count on it to be the same every time—no matter how many attach/detach cycles the suppressor’s been through.
Increased Accuracy Groups typically improve with a SureFire suppressor attached. This is attributable to SureFire's proprietary suppressor design, which dampens vibration, reduces recoil, and affects other ballistic dynamics. Will a SureFire suppressor make you a better shot? That’s what practice is for. But it’ll put the rounds where you point them.
Extreme Durability SureFire suppressors are made from special alloys that are extremely resistant to both high temperatures and to erosion from superheated gases and particles that can eat away other suppressors. Cutting-edge materials, redundant welding, and advanced engineering help a SureFire suppressor stand up to heat, pressure, and other forces that can tear a lesser suppressor apart. In fact, a SureFire suppressor can be expected to outlast the barrel it’s mounted on—with no decrease in performance over the life of the suppressor.

Fulltime Usability
Combat-Proven Reliability
Fulltime use with a SureFire suppressor is not only possible but preferable. A SureFire suppressor adds minimal length and weight to your weapon, so it won’t bog you down or hamper your maneuverability. And with our patented Fast-Attach® system, you can revert to unsuppressed mode in seconds. But with the benefits of sound suppression, increased accuracy, and legendary durability, why not leave it on? With SureFire, you have the option.
Used under extreme conditions around the world, SureFire sound suppressors have delivered as promised. Operators in combat give them a strong thumbs-up, and they aren't the kind to sugarcoat things.
Increased Safety Anything can happen in the heat of battle, and SureFire suppressors are built with this in mind. Should a SureFire suppressor ever be bent or forced out of alignment, our fail-safe baffle system allows a bullet to continue safely downrange, even if it strikes an internal baffle. Other suppressors, with typical conical baffles, can deflect the bullet through the side of the suppressor, an extremely dangerous situation for the operator and those around him.
No Permanent Weapon Modifications Most weapons don’t require any permanent modifications to accept a SureFire suppressor. Simply replace your weapon’s flash hider with the appropriate SureFire adapter and a SureFire suppressor will attach in seconds.
Adapter Stand-Alone Functionality SureFire makes three kinds of suppressor adapters: muzzle brakes, flash hiders, and compensators. These adapters function efficiently as stand-alone devices that enhance your weapon’s performance and appearance, but they also serve as rock-solid mounting platforms for SureFire suppressors. Suppressors and adapters can be purchased separately. One SureFire suppressor can be used on any same-caliber firearm equipped with an appropriate SureFire adapter.

SUPPRESSED FIRE: A TACTICAL ADVANTAGE IN COMBAT Don Alexander U.S. Army Special Forces (Ret.) Of all the equipment that can be added to a high-tech assault rifle, a sound suppressor ranks as one of the most useful. Originally used primarily for specialized missions by snipers and SOF operators, suppressors are becoming more mainstream in the U.S. military as individuals and unit commanders recognize the many benefits they offer. A reduction in noise and a diminished dust/flash signature from a weapon are at the top of the list of suppressor benefits. They allow an operator to maintain a tactical advantage over an opponent in a gunfight because suppressed shots are much harder to detect and counter. In fact, when suppressed weapons are used, most enemies don’t even realize they’re being fired at. And once they do, they typically have a difficult time determining where the shots are coming from. While they may hear the sonic crack of a round, they probably won’t recognize it for what it is unless they’re very experienced or extremely well trained. During my 26-year career I used suppressors—on submachine guns, assault rifles, and machine guns—on a half-dozen separate combat tours. I found them to be an indispensable tool. Not only do they make a modern-day warrior more lethal and effective in combat, they help increase his odds of survival. Odds every operator wants to tip in his favor.

SureFire Sound Suppressors
ACCURACY & CONSISTENCY Minimal, Consistent Zero Shift
Group Size Improvement
Most higher-quality sound suppressors offer comparable amounts of noise reduction. However, they vary greatly in other areas, including accuracy, durability, and in their effect on a firearm’s unsuppressed point of impact and group size. For example, the current-issue SOCOM suppressor shifts a firearm’s point of impact an average of four inches at 100 yards and reportedly, in individual instances, as much twelve inches. This can put a round completely off the target SureFire Fast-Attach® at 50 yards.
It doesn’t matter how quiet your shots are if they don’t hit where they’re aimed. With SureFire suppressors, firearm accuracy usually improves. Groups typically tighten up, sometimes moderately, sometimes significantly. Why? Precision manufacturing ensures extremely tight tolerances, eliminating any misalignment that could adversely affect accuracy. Solid, consistent attachment via SureFire’s Fast-Attach® system clamps the suppressor securely to the barrel, perfectly aligning the bores of the suppressor and weapon. And the suppressor locks into precisely the same position every single time.
sound suppressors provide negligible or minimal shifting of a firearm’s normal point of impact and typically improve group size.
When SureFire entered the sound suppressor business, one of our goals was to design a suppressor that produces minimal and consistent point-of-impact shift when going from unsuppressed to suppressed mode. Minimal meaning one minute of angle (MOA) or less, and consistent meaning any shift that occurred had to be the same amount and the same direction every time the suppressor was attached.
The SureFire suppressor team hit their mark: their first run of suppressors, a batch of 100 M4FA’s delivered to a special operations group, produced an average shift of less than one MOA during testing. Operators from this group have reported that they had absolutely no shift in point of impact.
Reduced recoil and muzzle flash allows a shooter to better concentrate on shooting mechanics.
11
MINIMAL, CONSISTENT Targets show typical results when SureFire suppressors are attached to a firearm: zero or minimal shift from a firearm's point of impact in unsuppressed mode and improved group size. Rifle used was a Remington 700 in 5.56X45mm (.223 Rem.), 16" test barrel fitted with a SureFire MB556K muzzle brake suppressor adapter. Ammunition was Black Hills 77 grain BTHP. Range 100 yards. Weapon fired off a bench. Black center square is 1" x 1". The first target shows 5-round group shot with no suppressor attached. A different SureFire FA556K /FA556-212 suppressor was used for each five-round group in the remaining targets.

FAST-ATTACH® SYSTEM When an operator decides to suppress his weapon, he usually needs the suppressor on now. SureFire's patented Fast-Attach system was built with this in mind. This simple, precise mechanism allows a SureFire suppressor to slide onto a weapon and lock into place in seconds. It utilizes a high-quality, stainless steel adapter— muzzle brake, flash hider, or compensator—installed on the barrel as a rock-steady mounting platform. Precisionmachined dual bearing surfaces on the adapter ensure that the suppressor locks on the same way every time, in perfect alignment with the bore.

EXTREME DURABILITY
The extreme forces at work on SureFire sound suppressors require them to be exceptionally strong and durable.
The physics of suppressor science can be a bit mind-boggling. Very simply put, suppressors convert sound energy into heat energy, so there’s a lot of heat at work on that metal cylinder at the end of your weapon. Other forces take their toll on a suppressor too, including pressure spikes and erosion from gas, unburned powder residue, and carbon particles. Super-heated gas and particles leave the muzzle and hit the rearmost baffle like a highly charged bead blaster. Lesser suppressors can only withstand a limited amount of this punishment before the peppering destroys the baffles or erodes the baffle holes. This can ultimately lead to catastrophic failure, sometimes resulting in a bullet exiting through the side of the suppressor—a very dangerous situation. How a suppressor holds up under these forces—as well as external forces from Mother Nature, combat conditions, and operator abuse—is a function of its materials, its design, and the quality of manufacturing used to put it together. Not surprisingly, SureFire suppressors lead the way in each area.
Materials SureFire suppressors are made from extraordinary high-temperature aerospace alloys capable of being heated to extreme temperatures, expanding, and then cooling down and contracting—without compromising any of the suppressor’s structural integrity. Our suppressors have been extensively tested by superheating them and using special tools to measure the temperature. We've determined the most advantageous mixture of high-temp alloys for maximum durability and strength. As a side benefit, because these alloys are super-strong, our suppressors weigh less than if they were made of pure stainless steel.
13
Tight tolerances, state-of-the-art machining, and redundant welding all contribute to making SureFire suppressors marvels of engineering.
Design Engineered to perform, SureFire suppressors are also made to last. From baffle design to redundant welding (a SureFire suppressor has between 80 and 120 internal welds) to our patented Fast-Attach® mechanisms, we’ve done our homework, putting pencil to paper and doing the math. Our designs aren’t theoretical, either. We put our suppressors through the wringer in the field, actively trying to get them to fail. Without much success, though—the weapon’s barrel just about always gives out first.
Manufacturing Our suppressors are manufactured entirely on site, at our state-of-the-art facility in Southern California. We use computer-controlled equipment to obtain extremely tight tolerances not achievable with traditional lower-tech machining processes. And SureFire suppressors are made entirely by SureFire employees at SureFire—not subcontracted out to other machine shops or vendors, the way some other suppressor manufacturers do.
By building our suppressors on site, utilizing lean manufacturing, and true one-piece flow, we know exactly where every suppressor we manufacture stands each step of the way. And if it isn’t up to our demanding standards, at any point, we pull it. There's no "tweaking" it, even if it's good enough to get by, because it won't get past our quality control process. So, how durable are SureFire suppressors? Durable enough for us to put our money where our mouths are by offering a lifetime warranty on every SureFire suppressor we sell.

ATTACHMENT
Fast
Consistent
Goes on or off in less than five seconds — even while wearing heavy gloves. No tools required, no lining up threads that could be stripped or dinged.
A SureFire suppressor attaches to your firearm in the same position every time. Along with other attributes of our suppressors, this produces little or no shift in the firearm's unsuppressed point of impact. Any minimal group shift that occurs will be consistent every time you go suppressed—no guessing where your rounds will hit. If there's a better suppressor mounting system, it hasn't been invented yet. But of course we're always trying.
Solid The Fast-Attach system locks the suppressor tightly and securely onto the firearm. It stays in place, eliminating shot-to-shot vibration variations that can cause a loss of accuracy.

SOUND SUPPRESSOR SCIENCE Suppressors 101
A sound suppressor is essentially a metal tube with interior chambers separated by metal walls called baffles. A passageway for the bullet runs through the baffles. While this fundamental design is inherent in all modern suppressors, there are many modifications that can dramatically affect a suppressor’s sound-reduction capabilities. Suppressors “suppress” sound primarily by confining, cooling, and extending the release time of firearm dis charge gases, all of which occurs in a fraction of a second. The amount of sound attenuation from a suppressor is not constant, either. Any given sound suppressor can produce different results on any given day, depending on the weapon used, the ammunition used, the temperature of the suppressor—even local atmospheric conditions such as barometric pressure, air temperature, and humidity.
It should be noted that sound reduction capability is not the only—nor necessarily the most crucial—factor in suppressor design. Other factors, such as how solidly and easily the suppressor attaches to a firearm, weight, size, durability, the consistency and amount of shift in point of impact, and how the suppressor affects a firearm’s accuracy, are also extremely important. And SureFire leads the way in all of these areas.
25
Sound Perception Human perception of a gunshot depends on the sound’s intensity, duration, frequency distribution, distance of the listener from the firearm, position of the listener with respect to the firearm, and the listener’s hearing abilities. And human ears are most sensitive to sound frequencies of middle A and its higher harmonics (between 2 and 4 kHz). What this means is, if 10 different suppressors were tested in front of 10 different people, you might wind up with 10 different opinions as to which suppressor was the “quietest.”
Unit of Sound Measurement The standard unit of measurement of sound intensity, which humans perceive as loudness, is the “bel,” named for Alexander Graham Bell. However, for most measurement purposes the bel is too large, so the decibel (1/10 of a bel) is more commonly used. The decibel scale is logarithmic, which means a small difference in measured value equates to a great difference in intensity. For example, a noise source measuring 70dB is 10 times louder than a source measuring 60dB and 100 times louder than a source measuring 50dB.
Measuring Suppressor Effectiveness
» 800.828.8809 » www.surefire.com
SureFire takes great pains to ensure our measurements are standardized and as accurate as possible. Which is why we believe that blanket statements like “Our suppressor reduces a weapon’s sound signature by X decibels” are not accurate. We’ll put our suppressors up against any other brand when it comes to noise attenuation. And when it comes to durability, accuracy, consistency, and convenience/solidity of attachment, SureFire is in a league of its own.
TO ORDER
The measured results of a sound suppressor’s effectiveness in attenuating the sound of a firearm discharge can vary tremendously. They depend on the equipment used to measure the sound, the position of microphones, the environment in which sound is being measured (like hard surfaces versus sound-absorbent surfaces), and other conditions previously mentioned, such as atmospheric conditions.

SUPPRESSOR ADAPTERS A SureFire suppressor adapter does more than provide a mounting platform for your suppressor. It also serves as a stand-alone device that improves weapon performance even when no suppressor is attached. There are three types of SureFire adapters available— muzzle brakes, flash hiders, and birdcage compensators. Each type contributes to your weapon’s performance in its own unique way.
There are three types of SureFire adapters: muzzle brakes, flash hiders, and compensators. Each offers different performance characteristics. The exact SureFire adapter(s) available for your particular firearm depends on your weapon’s caliber, make, and model.
The actual adapter model used depends on your particular weapon and suppressor choice. SureFire adapters can be installed on existing muzzle threads, with no permanent weapon modifications required.
Even after thousands of rounds SureFire adapters still perform as rock-solid mounting platforms for our suppressors.

MUZZLE BRAKES SureFire muzzle brakes utilize our proprietary Impulse Diffusion design to significantly reduce a weapon’s felt recoil and muzzle rise. Unlike most muzzle brakes, SureFire brakes also diffuse and minimize muzzle blast, reducing concussion felt by the shooter and enabling better target concentration and faster follow-up shots.
