TITLE: LOGLINE: GENRE:

SNYDER BEAT NOTES OPENING IMAGE First impression of what a move is – its tone, its mood, the type and the scope of the film. The opening and final image should be opposites. Make the reader or watcher scrunch down and say “This is gonna be good’…. Also gives a starting point of the hero.

SCENE 2 SETUP

SETUP The first 10 pages of the script or first dozen at most is called the set-up. This also where we start to plant every character tic, every behavior that needs to be addressed later on and show how and why the hero will need to change in order to win.

SETUP / THEME

SCENE 3 SETUP THEME

This is the place to stick the 6 things that need fixing. 1. Physical - the obvious problem that the story is all about. Someone is trying to kill me, I am in great debt, my family has been kidnapped etc.

THEME

2. Emotional - the inner problem with the hero. He is depressed, hates himself, and regrets the past too much. 3. Social - the hero's relationship problem. He is lonely, doesn't appreciate his family or partner, or is unpopular.

ACT 1 SETUP (1-10) CATALYST (12) DEBATE (12-25) BREAK INTO 2 (25)

Lifestyle - the wrongs of the hero's daily routine. He is lazy, unhelpful, and greedy.

In the first 5 minutes, someone (not main C), will ask a question or make a statement that is the theme of the movie. It won’t be obvious but it will be conversational, an off hand remark that the main C does not quite get at the moment but will have far reaching and meaningful impact later, This statement is the thematic premise.

SETUP

4. Beliefs - what the hero (wrongly) thinks. He is racist, sexist, prejudiced, uses fate as an excuse for his bad lifestyle. 5. Habitual - the hero has a vice that he must overcome He is an alcoholic, drug addict, nymphomaniac, overeats…

Life changing events often come as bad news. The catalyst is not what it seems. The catalyst point is the first moment when something happens. The first whammy.

? ? B STORY Begins on page 30. The story that carries the theme of the movie. It is a little booster rocket that helps smooth over the shockingly obvious. The b story gives us a breather. Often a brand new set of characters.

FUN AND GAMES It provides the promise of the premise. The core and essence of the movie poster. Where the trailer moments of a movie are found. Here we aren’t as concerned with the forward progress of the story. The stakes won’t be raised until the midpoint. We are concerned with having fun. Answers the question “why did I come to see this movie?

ACT 3

FINALE The finale is act 3. This is where we wrap it up. It’s where the character tics are mastered. It’s the turning over of the old world and a creation of the new world order… All thanks to the hero, who leads the way based on what he experienced in the upside down, antithetical world of Act 2.

FINALE

FINALE (85-110) FINAL IMAGE (110)

FINAL IMAGE The final image in a movie is the opposite of the opening image. It is the proof that change has occurred and that it’s real. If you can’t have that final image or you can’t see how it applies, then something is not adding up in Act 2.
