Valley of the Pinios

ENCiLISH

Lying on high, calcareous sandstone rocks are the monumental monasteries of Meteo ra, a region in north-central Greece. The rock pillars offer a view ofthe valley ofthe Pinios River. In the ninth century, the rocks were livedon by hermits, and then by monksin the eleventh century, who were driven away elsewhere. Halfway through the fourteenth century the first monasteries were built high on the rocks; in the subsequent centuries, a flourishing monastic life came about. More than twenty monasteries were erected and an autonomous community of monks was established. Until the mid-eighteenth century, the monasteries formed a center of education and arts. Nowadays, si x monasteries are still occupied, ofwhich four are open to visitors. Because ofthe improved infrastructure and the growth oftourism, there is little increase ofyoung monks; manytake refuge in the silence ofthe monasteries on Mount Athos, which are not accessible for tourists. With this subject as his souree of inspiration, composer Kevin Houben has created Valley ofthe Pin ios- on cammission of the Belgian Bra ss Band Retie. You can al most hear the wind swirl around the chalk rocks. The sacred atmosphere of the monasteries, the prayers, the solitude ... and also the grandness of the valley and the splendor of nature are reflected in this composition.

DEUTSCH

Die monumentalen Klöster von Meteora liegen auf hohen kalkhaltigen Sandsteinfelsen im Norden von Griechenland. Die Felssäulen bieten einen Bliek über das Tal durch das der Fluss Pinios flieBt. lm neunten Jahrhundert lebten Einsiedler in den Felsen, im elften Jahrhundert kamen die Mönche, die von woanders vertrieben worden waren. In der Mitte des vierzehnten Jahrhunderts wurden die ersten Klöster auf den Felsen errichtet und das klösterliche Leben blühte auf. Mehr als zwanzig Klöster wurden gebaut und es entstand eine autonome Mönchsgemeinde. Bis zur Mitte des achtzehnten Jahrhunderts bildeten die Klöster ein Zentrum der Kultur und Bildung. Heute sind sechs der Klöster immer noch bewohnt, vier davon stehen au eh Besuchern offen. Aufgrund derverbesserten lnfrastruktur und des wachsenden Tourismus gibt es auch wieder etwas mehr junge Mönche; viele suchen Zuflucht in der Stille der Klöster auf dem Berg Athos, die für Touristen nicht zugänglich sind. Dieser Hintergrund bildete Kevins Houbens lnspirationsquelle zu Valleyofthe Pinios, das er im Auftrag der belgischen Brass Band Retie schrieb. Man kann fast den Wind um die Kalkfelsen pfeifen hören. Die heilige Atmosphäre der Klöster, die Ge bete, die Einsamkeit ... und auch die Pracht des Tal es und die Schönheit der Natur spiegein sich in dieser Komposition wider.

Juchés sur d'impressionnants pitons de grès calcaire, les monastères des Météores, situés au nord de la Grèce continentale, offrent une vue fascinante sur la vallée, draînée par Ie fleuve Pinios. Les roehers des Météores ont poussé les premiers ermites à accuper Ie lieu dès Ie IXe siècle. Au Xle siècle, des moines chassés de leurs temples s'installèrent sur "les colonnes du del", mais ce n'est qu'au XIVe siècle que les premiers monastères furent construits. La vie monastique fut florissante au cours des siècles qui suivirent. Plus de vingt monastères furent érigés et une communanuté monastique autonome s'y établit. Jusqu'au milieu du XVIIIe siècle, les monastères des Météores servirent de eentres d'éducation, de lettres et d'art. Sur les vingt-quatre monastères initiaux, seuls six sont encore en activité actuellement, dont quatre sont ouverts au public. En raison de l'amélioration des infrastructures et de la forte affluence touristique, peu de jeunes moines souhaitent s'y établir. La plupart trouvent refuge dans Ie silence des monastères du mont Athos, inaccessibles aux touristes. Kevin Houben s'est inspiré de ces lieux pour composer Valley of the Pinios {La vallée du Pinios}, une ceuvre de commande pour Ie Brass Band de Retie en Belgique. On y entend presque Ie vent tourbilloner autour des roehers de craie. 11 émane une atmosphère sacrée des monastères, des prières et de la solitude ... La vallée majestueuse révèle toute la splendeur de la nature.

NEDERLANDS

Op hoge, kalkrijke zandsteenrotsen liggen de monumentale kloosters van Meteora, een gebied in het noorden van centraal Griekenland. De rotspilaren bieden uitzicht op de vallei van de Pinios. In de negende eeuw werden de rotsen bewoond door kluizenaars, gevolgd door elders verbannen monniken in de elfde eeuw. Midden veertiende eeuw werden de eerste kloosters hoog op de rotsen gebouwd; in de eeuwen daarna ontstond er een bloeiend kloosterleven. Er verrezen meer dan twintig kloosters en er kwam een autonome gemeenschap van monniken tot stand. Tot halverwege de achttiende eeuw vormden de kloosters een centrum van onderwijs en kunst. Tegenwoordig zijn er nog zes kloosters bewoond, waarvan er vier open zijn voor bezoekers. Door de verbeterde infrastructuur en het groeiende toerisme is er nog maar weinig aanwas van jonge kloosterlingen; velen zoeken hun toevlucht in de stilte van de kloosters op de berg Athos- die niet toegankelijk zijn voor toeristen. Met dit onderwerp als bron van inspiratie heeft componist Kevin Houben Val!ey ojthe Pinios gecreëerd- in opdracht van de Belgische Brassband Retie. Je hoort als het ware de wind rond de kalkrotsen wervelen. De sacrale sfeer van de kloosters, de gebeden, de eenzaamheid ... maar ook de weidsheid van de vallei en de pracht van de natuur worden in deze compositie verklankt.
