HOW TO USE THIS COMPETENCY–BASED LEARNING MODULE Welcome to the Module Performing Mensuration and Calculation. This module contains training materials and activities for you to complete. This unit of competency Perform Mensuration and Calculation contains the knowledge, skills and attitudes required in Automotive Servicing. It is one of the Common Modules at National Certificate Level ll. You are required to go through series of learning activities in order to complete each learning outcome of the module. In each learning outcome there are Information Sheets. Resource Sheets and Reference Materials for further reading to help you better understand the required activities. Follow these activities on your own and answer the self-check at the end of each learning outcome. Get the answer key from your instructor and check your work honestly. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to ask your facilitator for assistance. Recognition to Prior Learning (RPL) You may already have some or most of the knowledge and skills covered in this module because you have:  

been working for sometime already completed training in this area

If you can demonstrate to your trainer that you are competent in a particular skill or skills, talk to him/her about having them formally recognized so you won’t have to do the same training again. If you have qualifications or Certificates of Competency from previous trainings, show them to your trainer. If the skills you acquired are still relevant to this module, they may become part of the evidence you can present for RPL. At the end of this learning material is a Learner’s Diary, use this diary to record important dates, jobs undertaken and other workplace events that will assist you in providing further details to your trainer or assessors. A Record of Achievement is also provided for your trainer to complete once you completed the module. This learning material was prepared to help you achieve the required competency in Performing Mensuration and Calculation. This will be the source of information for you to acquire the knowledge and skills in this particular trade independently and at your own pace with minimum supervision or help from your instructor. In doing the activities to complete the requirements of this module, please be guided with the following: 

Talk to your trainer and agree on how you will both organize the training under this module. Read through the module carefully. It is divided into sections which cover all the skills and knowledge you need to successfully complete.

Work through all information and complete the activities in each section. Read the information sheets and complete the self-checks provided. Suggested references are included to supplement the materials provided in this module.

Most probably your trainer will also be your supervisor or manager. He/ She is there to support you and show you the correct way to do things. Ask for help.

Your trainer will tell you the important things you need to consider when you are completing the activities and it is important that you listen and take notes.

You will be given plenty of opportunities to ask questions and practice on the job. Make sure you practice your new skills during the regular work shifts. This way you will improve both your speed and memory and also your confidence.

Talk to more experienced work mates and ask for their guidance.

Use self–check questions at the end of each section to test your own progress.

When you are ready, ask you trainer to watch you perform the activities outlined in this module.

As you work through the activities, ask for written feedbacks on your progress. Your trainer keeps feedbacks/pre-assessment reports for this reason. When you have completed this learning material and feel confident that you have had sufficient knowledge and skills, your trainer will arrange on appointment with a registered assessor to assess you. The results of the assessment will be recorded in your Competency Achievement Record.

QUALIFICATION : Automotive Servicing NC II UNIT OF COMPETENCY : Perform Mensuration And Calculation MODULE TITLE : PERFORMING MENSURATION AND CALCULATION

INTRODUCTION: This module covers calculations and mathematical problems related to automotive works including tolerances and measurement, including conversion of two systems of measurements. This module consists of three learning outcomes, each outcome contains learning activities for both knowledge and skills supported with information sheets, self-check and job/operation sheets gathered from different sources. Before you perform the manual exercises, read the information sheet and answer the self-check provided to confirm to yourself and to your instructor that you are equipped with knowledge necessary to perform the skill portion of the particular learning outcomes. Upon completion of this module, you have to subject yourself to your instructor for assessment; you will be given a certificate of completion as a proof that you met the standard requirement (knowledge and skills) for this module. The assessment could be in different methods as prescribed in the competency standard. Learning Outcomes LO 1

JOB SAFETY Some people say accidents will happen! But safety experts disagree. They say accidents are caused. They are caused by careless actions. They are caused by inattention to the job and they caused by using damaged or incorrect tools. Fewer accidents occur in shops that are neat and clean. Trainees in Automotive Serving should posses an instinct of willingness to undergo common competencies especially in performing mensuration and calculation as it answer the urgent needs and demand of many industries. Being able to measure accurately is one of the most important skills a Technician can cultivate in Automotive and Land Transport Sector. Measuring is very important in both troubleshooting and repair. Often, a measurement that is off by as little as 0.001 inch will keep a part from fitting properly and from operating satisfactorily. PURPOSE OF PERFORMING MENSURATION AND CALCULATION 1. To know the proper ways in performing mensuration and calculation. 2. To provide scientific solution to answer the needs of vehicle users and service technicians as well as the student. In connection to this approach, technicians and trainees must follow the standard and adopts self actualization behaviors towards determining faults and strictly follow procedures given by the manufacturers, including the summary of experience gathered from previous troubles in that particular unit of competencies and proper observing occupational health standard and safety. ELEMENTS OF PERFORMING MENSURATION AND CALCULATION 1. 2. 3. 4.

Understanding of mathematics symbols, signs and formulas. Knowledgeable in using measuring tools and instruments. Knowledgeable in using or reading mathematics chart. Knowledgeable in maintaining measuring instruments.

vernier caliper thickness gauge / feeler gauge ruler micrometers Telescoping Gauge Torque Wrench

History of Measurement Originally, the English measuring system was the most common in the world. In the last 200 years more than 90% of the world’s people have adopted the metric system. Linear measurement means to measure distance or length. There are two main measuring systems used in the world today, the English System with its common unit of measure is the inch and the Metric System with its common unit of measure in meter. Vernier Caliper A vernier caliper can take both inside and outside measurements. These may be either thousandths of an inch or hundredths of a millimeter. The vernier caliper scale is divided into 50 parts and numbered by fives from 0 to 50. The 50 divisions on the vernier scale occupy the same space as 49 divisions on the frame. The difference is 1/100 (0.001) inch. Thickness Gauge / Feeler Gauge Thickness gauge are strips or blades or metal of various thickness. They are used to measure small gaps or distances such as the clearance between two parts. Many thickness gauges are dual dimensioned. Document No.:

Ruler The simplest tool for measuring short distances, the tape measure is another type of steel rule. However, neither is accurate enough for most automotive service work. Micrometer The USC or ‘inch micrometer” reads in thousands of an inch. Some read in ten-thousands. Micrometer is a hand-held precision measuring instrument. In metric measurements are in hundredths of a millimeter. The two types of micrometer are the inside micrometer and outside micrometer. The micrometer is used most in the automotive shop.
