SUBJECT: INTERPRETATION OF PROFILE GAGE ON USED CONNECTIONS. 1.0

This procedure is applicaple to the use of profile gage to help determine the acceptability of threads on used connections.

2.0

Interpretation of results from this procedure shall be performed only by certified PTSC OS RSC inspection.

3.0

Inspection with a profile gage shall be performed only on connections that have been throughly cleaned.

4.0

Select the appropriate thread profile gage based on thread form , taper and pitch. Inspect each connection for thread profile and stretch a minimum of four places around the connection. 4.1

Stretching will usually occur on pins first in the area of the last engaged thread ( Approximately 1” from the shoulder). This area must be included in the inspection.

4.2

Figure I represents the mating of a profile gage on a stretched connection. Notice the charateristic gap between the roor of the thread and the root of the gage.

4.3

If a root gap is present, verify it is not caused by roll metal, etc., that does not allow the gage to sit down properly. Remove cause of improper fit if only minor repair is required.

4.4

If the root gap is caused by stretch, a lead gage must be used to determine the amount of stretch. RP 7G and 5B details the use of a lead gage. Stretch that exceed .006” in a 2” gaging distance is rejectable.

4.5

Figure 2 represents the mating of a profile gage and worn threads. Notice the gaps between the flanks and between the crest of the thread and the crest of the profile gage Axial movement of the profile gage may be possible.

4.6

Since thread width and height are dependent we can control the allowable amount of wear by limiting the size of the gap between the gage crest and the thread crest. A maximum of 1/32” is allowable.

4.7

Maximum allowable gap may be present on all thread and completely around the connection.

4.8

A gap larger than the maximum allowable may be acceptable if the criteria for “Acceptable Thread Blemishes” is met.

5.0

Rejected connnections should have a red band painted around the shoulder and the cause of rejection painted in red on a yellow background on the OD of the connection.

5.1

Connections that are rejected due to stretch should have “stretched” stenciled on the OD and the lead gage reading recorded on the report.

5.2

Connections that are rejected due to worn or damaged thread should have “damaged thread” stenciled on the OD.
