SUBJECT : CALIBRATION OF ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT METERS See API Recommended practice 5A5. 1.0

PURPOSE 1.1 To establish a standard procedure for calibration of ultraviolet light meters.

2.0

APPLICATION 2.1 All ultraviolet light meters used to measure the intensity of ultraviolet lamps used in magnetic particle inspection. 2.2 This procedure applies to the initial calibration of newly acquired light meters and to the periodic recallibration at the specified intervals.

3.0

ASSOCIATED MATERIALS 3.1 Calibration control and recall. 3.2 Calibration transfer standard digital radiometer 3.3 Ultraviolet lamp.

4.0

PROCEDURE 4.1

Calibration shall be performed in a darkened area with a maximum ambient white light level of two foot candles.

4.2

The ultraviolet light source used for calibration shall be a standard ultraviolet lamp with suitable filter to produce a minimum intensity of 800 microwatts per cm2 at a distance of 15 inches from the light sensor.

4.3

The ultraviolet lamp must be turned on and allowed to warm up for at least five { 5} minutes prior to performing any calibration.

4.4

Position the transfer standard UV sensor on the test surface directly under the ultraviolet lamp to obtain the maximum intensity reading.

4.5

Record the maximum standard UV reading.

4.6

Next, position the sensor to be calibrated in the exact same location as the transfer standard.

4.7

Record the maximum intensity reading obtained from the sensor under calibration.

4.8

Repeat steps 4.4 through 4.7 two additional times.

4.9

Compare the readings obtained with the transfer standard sensor to those of sensor under calibration. The maximum allowable deviation of the readings of the sensor under calibration to those of the transfer standard sensor shall be +- 5%.

4.10

Any instrument exceeding the tolerance specified in 4.9 shall be adjusted or repaired as required and recallibrated.

4.11

All repair or adjustments shall be performed by a qualified individual.

4.0 DOCUMENTATION 4.1A record of calibration shall be furnished to main office. The record shall include as a mimimum , the following information. A A description of the item calibrated. B

Serial number of item calibrated.

C

The date calibration was performed.

D Identifying mark of the individual performing the calibration. E

Notation of any out of tolerance conditions.

F The instruments and/or standards used in calibration.
