Hippo Amigurumi Crochet Pattern craftpassion.com/hippo-amigurumi-crochet-pattern Craft Passion

October 22, 2019

Hady, the pink hippo amigurumi crochet pattern has finally made her trip to Craft Passion’s library. This Hippo Amigurumi is the second animal of Craft Passion’s latest Animal & Wildlife Amigurumi series after Leon the Lion Amigurumi. Both of them are designed and created based on their peers, MooMoo Cow Amigurumi and Aile Winged Unicron Amigurumi, hence you will see some similarities among them.

1/23

Hady, the Hippo Amigurumi is about 11.5″ tall in standing pose and about 9″ tall when it is sitting down, crochet from DK lightweight acrylic yarn by using 2.5mm hook. It is a great size as a huggable softie, hence, it is absolutely lovely to make for children as a gift. However, the size can be altered by using a different yarn weight, eg. bigger size by using heavier yarn, DK medium yarn with 3.0mm hook, or, smaller size by using lighter baby yarn with 2.0mm. Crochet tension will determine the size a little, usually, my tension is quite snug, thus, my hippo could be a little smaller compares to yours.

Since Hady the hippo amigurumi is a big fan of beaches, we made her a bikini suit to wear along. You may find the bikini suit crochet pattern at the pattern section too. Since the other animals in the Animal & Wildlife Amigurumi series are about the same size and same construction, this bikini suit can be shared among them (more animals to be introduced soon).

3/23

On one fine day, Hady brings along her favorite mini sun hat and a mini straw tote for a trip to the beach. Enjoying the sea breeze by the shore, listening to the lullaby of the wave that washes along the sandy beach, watching kids having fun activities. Hady is definitely having a relaxing vacation that she has been dreaming for. (Duck buoy, sandals and beach ball patterns coming soon)

More Details on how to crochet & assemble the Hippo Amigurumi Eyes & Ears

16/23

Sew eyes at round 24, 18 stitches apart. Do not cut the yarn after sewing the first eye, instead, insert it into the head and come out from the second eye to sew another eye. Pull the yarn a little to sink the eyes into the head, knot securely. You can run the yarn through the head a few times to prevent the yarn from snapping in the long run. Sew the ears to the head, about 8 rounds at the back of the eyes. Side view of the head after eyes and ears are sewed on.

Teeth & Lip

17/23

Sew teeth at 3 rows below the center. Loop a yarn across the snout at the level above the teeth, after that entwine it with stem stitches.

Nostrils

18/23

Sew nostrils with 4 strands of yarn, at round 10, 18 stitches apart.

Assembly Complete the rest of the parts and you are ready to assemble the hippo amigurumi. Position the head and the body with the head slightly tilted to the front. Mark the position and pin to secure it if necessary. Join the head to the body by sewing a straight join between them. Sew arms at the side, next to the seam of the head and body. Followed by sewing legs at round 15 (from the bottom) of the body. Lastly, sew the tail to the back of the body. The side view of the completed hippo amigurumi.

20/23

Bikini Suit The hippo amigurumi needs a bikini suit so that she can go to her favorite beach for some sunbathing. Wear the bikini suit on Hady, the hippo amigurumi and she is ready for her long waiting beach trip.

I hope you enjoy crocheting your own Hady the Hippo Amigurumi!
