Pharmacology is a course which contents are highly identifiable by the name itself. This course is designed to educated students on specific medication classes and the most commonly used medications of these classes while also understanding the specific modalities of how these drugs work. Lastly, it is discussed in deep detail as to why a specific medication or medication class is used in a certain scenario. This topic delves further into the actions of the medications as well as the potential side effects and contraindications of certain medications, explaining why one medication or medication class may be preferred for a specific patient versus another medication. Pharmacology application in the clinical setting is not yet touched upon in this lecture (as far as practice in a lab) but the importance of extreme attention to detail is discussed. Any one medication can provide positive or negative effects to the patient’s health dependent on the appropriateness of the drug and how the person receiving the medication responds. This intern resulted in patient education and assessment for negative side effects becoming two large components of the lecture for this course. In all, this course equipped me with sources to constantly refer to in times later in my career, side effects and contraindications of the drugs lectured upon, appropriate dosage and routes to administer specific medications, and the key to weighing out risk V.S. reward for any medication prior to administration.
