long: Before long is an expression which means soon.

about: The adjective excited is followed by the preposition about.

own: Have a character of its own means the same as has its own character but is slightly more emphatic.

no: With no fear means the same as without fear.

entire: An entire chapter means the whole chapter – the difference is in the use of articles.

if: I would be very happy if I ate … is a second conditional clause which means the same as I would be very happy to eat …

life: The rest of my life is an expression meaning for the time left in my life.

road / street: Just down or up the road means it’s not far away.

Exercise 5 1

has been a great pleasure: It’s been a great pleasure means the same as we’ve really enjoyed it; it’s used as an expression; the indefinite article an is used before the uncountable noun pleasure as the reference is to a specific context, strengthened by the use of an adjective (great).

sees the best in: If someone sees the best in people, they try to concentrate on their good features, not the negative ones.

wasn’t planning on spending / to spend: Both sentences refer to plans for the future as seen from the past perspective – hence the use of didn’t intend to in the original sentence, and its equivalent wasn’t planning to is the other.

(minute) panic kicked in: If someone started panicking, it means panic kicked in (started to take effect).

she may not have been: Speculation about the past (possibility) – It’s possible she didn’t know about … means the same as she may not have been aware of …

the odds of getting: The odds of getting a well-paid job are the chances of getting it.
