GLASS CONTAINERS - Glass-making began in 7000 BC - First industrialized in Egypt in 1500 - Made from limestone, soda, sand and silica melted and molded while hot - Molding techniques progressed - In 1200 BC glass was molded into cups and bowls

GLASS CONTAINERS 17th century split mold developed 18th century glass was produced in irregular shapes and decorations 1889 the first automatic rotary bottlemaking machine was patented

METAL CONTAINERS 1200 AD tin plating process was discovered 14th century cans of iron coated with tin were known 1801 Peter Durand of Britain received a patent for tinplate after devising the sealed cylindrical can

PLASTICS 1831 – styrene was first distilled from a balsam tree 1933 – refined process for processing styrene 1950 – foam was available worldwide for insulation and cushioning, cups and trays

----1835 – vinyl chloride was discovered 1950 – cellophane was used as packaging 1977 – (Polyethylene terephthalate) PET was used in beverages
