A spectator selects a card from the deck, remembers his selection, and replaces it in the deck. The cards are thoroughly shuffled, and then inserted into a paper bag. The magician shakes the paper bag, further mixing the cards. Next, the magician lowers a piece of rope into the bag. When he slowly removes the rope from the bag, a card is magically tied to the rope’s end! Amazingly, that card is the selected card. This is a masterpiece of card magic that has been incorporated into the acts of magicians around the world. It has proven effective for both one-on-one performances as well as large audiences. In addition to the existing presentation using a selected card, we have also devised an amusing presentation using message cards. With this new method and presentation, you can entertain at parties using a customized message that is sure to excite the crowd.

PROPS INCLUDED

Insert the end of the short rope into the fake knot as shown in the illustration below. This will create a loop.

Remove one seven of diamonds card from the deck, and insert it into the rope loop that you just created. Pull the rope taut so that the card will not fall out.

A magnet is hidden inside one end of the long rope. By touching this end to the knot in the indicated position, the magnet will adhere to the knot. In this condition, it appears exactly as if the card is tied to the end of the rope.

Remove the long rope from the loop, and insert the rope into your pocket. Place the looped card into the paper bag, where it will remain hidden until you start the performance.

Shuffle the random half of the deck so that the order is thoroughly mixed. Turn that half face down. Onto this half deck, place the stack of “same cards” (all seven of diamonds). Insert the deck into the card case.

BASIC PRESENTATION 1 Remove the prepared deck from the card case, and begin to spread

7 Say, “Let’s mix the cards even further.” Pick up the paper bag, and shake it up and down, two or three times. It will appear as if the cards are being mixed out of control.

the upper half of the deck face up between your hands. Say, “I will show you some magic using a deck of cards.” Only spread the top half of the face up deck, displaying a random selection of cards. Close the spread, and turn the deck face down.

ɶɶImportant Point:

Do not say, “All of the cards are different.” This type of statement will raise the audience’s suspicion. Spread the upper half with confidence, and nobody will suspect that the unseen cards below are unusual in any way.

rests on top of the remaining cards. This is the ideal position. However if the looped card has fallen below the remaining cards, simply reach into the bag and move the looped card so it rests on top of the rest.

9 Pick up the rope, and insert the magnetic end into the paper bag.

2 Say, “We will also use a piece of rope.” Remove the rope from your pocket, and place it off to the side.

3 Spread the upper half of the deck face down between your hands. Say, “Please take a card.”

As long as your spectator removes one of the cards in the upper half of the deck, he is certain to select the seven of diamonds.

4 Square the deck, and say, “Please look at your card, and remember it.” Take the selected card back from the spectator, and insert it in the middle of the deck.

10 Look inside of the bag as you lower the rope inside, and guide the magnetic end to the fake knot. Thanks to the magnet, the fake knot will adhere to the rope.

11 Once the magnets are secure, slowly lift the rope out of the bag, with the back of the looped card toward the audience.

5 Shuffle the cards in your hands. Be careful not to drop any cards during the shuffle, as this could expose duplicate cards.

6 Drop the cards into the paper bag. Make sure that the cards land next to the pre-set card already inside the bag.

12 Slowly rotate the rope so that the face of the card is visible to the audience. They will be delighted to see that the rope has captured the selected card.

ɶɶAdvice:

It is dramatically important to remove the card back-out, wait a moment, and then rotate the face of the card to the audience. The reason is to first allow the audience a chance to appreciate that the rope has indeed captured one card. After they recognize this impressive feat, the audience will want to see which card it is. When you rotate the rope to bring the face of the selected card into view, your audience will likely shout out with excitement. The length of the rope becomes approximately 8 inches longer during the course of performing this trick. Do not worry – the audience will likely never catch this discrepancy. However if you want to cover all bases, dip the opposite end of the rope behind the bag, as shown in the previous illustration, when you remove the looped card.

PROFESSIONAL PRESENTATION With a few extra props and a revised presentation, you can perform a professional grade act that is sure to be a crowd-pleaser. If you plan to entertain at a party, challenge yourself with the following handling and you will be happily surprised by the audience’s response. JJ PREPARATION

You will need to provide three slips of blank paper that are the same size as a playing card. Write a message on these papers, with one or two words on each slip. Attach these message slips onto the enclosed blank face cards using tape or repositional glue. If you are performing at a birthday party, use the prepared birthday-themed cards that are enclosed in this package.

Attach the looped cards you previously prepared to the inner wall of the bag, using the plastic clip. Make sure that the magnetic end is pointing upward.

Insert the deck of cards into the card case, with the stack of seven of diamonds cards as the upper half. Insert the long rope and the card case into the paper bag. Position the paper bag so the clipped gimmick is located on the wall closer to the audience. Place three blank cards (with no message) into your pocket, with the backs facing outward. You are now ready to perform. JJ PERFORMANCE

1 Say, “Today we are gathered to celebrate [person’s name] and I have prepared a special trick for you with cards and a piece of rope.” Turn the prepared paper bag upside down and allow the cards and rope to slide out onto the table. Be sure not to let your audience see the hidden clip with its attached gimmick.

ɶɶImportant Point:

By turning the paper bag upside down, you non-verbally communicate that the bag is otherwise empty.

card, remember it, and return the card to the deck. Shuffle the cards to lose the selection.

3 Place the cards into the paper bag. 4 Remove three blank faced cards from your pocket, and hold them so the audience cannot see their faces. Say, “I will also add three different colored back cards. Later I will show you what is written on their faces.” Drop those three cards into the bag.

Farewell Party “THANK YOU” “(name)” “AND GOOD LUCK!” Other Event “THE END” “THANK YOU” “APPLAUSE!” Place the three prepared message cards onto the back of the seven of diamonds, and insert the packet into the short rope loop.

5 Say, “Finally, I insert the rope.” Lower the magnetic end of the rope into the bag. Look inside as you do so, and guide the rope so it adheres to the fake knot clipped to the bag. The clip is made of plastic, but the spring is made of metal. Do not let the magnet accidentally adhere to the metal spring.

ɶɶAdvice: You will need to prepare the bag in a simple way. Using household tape, attach the enclosed plastic clip to the inner wall of the paper bag, roughly in the position shown in the illustration below.

Compared to the handling described in Basic Presentation, the clip inside the paper bag allows for a smoother and quicker connection of the magnet.

6 Continue to lower the rope into the bag until it is about halfway inside. Drape the extra length of rope over the front wall of the bag.

7 Say, “I will mix the cards even more.” Grasp the bag with both hands, but contact the attached clip with one of your thumbs.

12 Spread the cards, backs toward the audience, to display that you actual have four cards. Drop the seven of diamonds into the bag.

13 Turn over the remaining cards one at a time to reveal the message. Read it aloud as you turn each card. Place each card face up onto the table to display the personalized message.

8 Shake the bag up and down several times to apparently mix the cards. After the final shake, open the clip with your thumb and allow the looped card gimmick to fall to the bottom of the bag.

9 Pick up the end of the rope that is draped over the front of the bag, and move it back and forth inside the bag, as you look into the opening from above. At this stage you are creating a mental image for the audience. It should appear as if you are working hard to do something magical.

FINAL NOTES The original trick, titled Lasso Card, was invented by German magician Werry Geissler in the 1950s. Many magicians have added this trick to their repertoire, and it has earned a great reputation among professional performers. Tenyo has designed a new gimmick that allows magicians of all skill levels to perform this trick with ease. We also have added the idea of fishing for customized message cards. 10 Slowly lift the rope out of the bag, making sure that the cards are revealed back-side toward the audience. Dramatically rotate the rope so that the face card becomes visible.

11 Say, “It looks like I caught several cards.” Slide out all four cards from the loop, being careful not to disengage the magnets. Drop the rope into the bag.

ɶɶExpert Technique:

You can make it appear as if you are untying the knot, with the following technique. Pull the end of the short rope out of the fake knot until it hangs free. Hide the fake knot behind your fingers and grip it at the end of the long rope. The rope now appears to be completely untied.
