NOTE-A-BILL

 T-291

The magician displays a notepad, and draws a picture of a banknote. In full view, he pulls the drawing from the notepad, and it instantly transforms into a real bill! Looking back at the notepad, the drawing is now completely blank, with no text printed. This shocking trick enables you to transform a drawing into a real object. The notepad looks like an ordinary and natural item, so you can carry it in your pocket and perform this trick as you go about your daily life. You will be ready to surprise your audiences at any time!

PROPS INCLUDED

Small Sheet Notepad

Remove the upper backing

Affix sticker to sheet (cut-out on left)

Align edges perfectly

Remove the remaining backing from the large sticker. Slowly and carefully, apply it to the sheet. Use a pencil point to poke out the tiny holes where the ring binding will pass through. If the large sticker becomes creased or damaged, or if the adhesive weakens over time, please replace with the extra sticker provided.

2 Apply small sticker to small sheet (1000 yen) Fold down the corner of the backing to the small sticker (1000 yen) and place it onto the small sheet. Carefully line up the cut line of the edge, and then affix the sticker at its exposed corner so that the layers remain aligned.

Push both ends to close rings, and to lock

By pulling at the ends of the notepad binding, you can unlock and open the rings. Push both ends inward, and the rings will lock closed.

PREPARING THE NOTEPAD If you will use US bills or Euro notes, read the section titled “OPTIONAL PERFORMANCE IDEAS WITHOUT 1000  YEN” first. In the following explanation you will see a 1000 yen Japanese bill displayed in the illustrations. However, you can prepare and perform with US bills or Euro notes in the same manner. You will need to prepare the gimmick using both the sticker and the sheets. This step is slightly cumbersome, but you will only need to perform it once, since the gimmick is reusable for multiple performances. Please do not be overwhelmed by this preparation – read through it with the props in hand.

1 Apply large sticker to large sheet Remove the backing from the hole end of the large sticker, and affix the large sticker to the large sheet. Pay close attention to the direction of the sheet, and ensure that they line up perfectly at all edges. The adhesive is repositional, so you can easily remove the sticker and try again if you are not successful on your first try.

Attach double-sided tape to two locations

Affix small sheet within white outline

If you run out of the enclosed double-sided tape in the future, feel free to replace with any double-sided tape available at office supply stores. Simply cut each strip to the following dimensions: 5mm x 68mm.

4 Apply large sheet to back cover Align the large sheet and the small sheet as shown in the diagram.

If you lined up the sheets correctly, the 1000 yen writing will be visible within the rectangular outline. Adjust the position of the large sheet so that the width of the black outline looks uniform all around. There should be no gaps or unnatural thicknesses. Properly aligned, the page should simply look like a drawing. Refer to the diagram below for the correct positioning.

3 Find a thick black marker in your home or office, and place it in your pocket along with the prepared notepad. You are now ready to perform the trick. Outline is straight

PERFORMANCE It is most effective to perform NOTE-A-BILL at a short distance, with your audience directly in front of you.

Correct positioning

Gap is visible

Outline is shifted

Once you have determined the correct position, remove the backing from the upper strip of double-sided tape, and affix the sheet to the back cover. Reconnect the back cover to the notepad, and your preparations are complete.

1 Remove the notepad from your pocket and display it to your audience. Hold the notepad so that the 1000 yen banknote remains hidden from view.

ɶɶAdvice:

If the large sheet shifts position, there is a chance that your audience will become aware of the gimmicked nature of the notepad. Be sure to take proper care when preparing the gimmick so that it is accurately positioned. The following conditions will arouse suspicion. If any of these problems are present, please redo the necessary steps listed above. • If there is a visible gap between the edge of the small sheet and the black rectangle outline • If the black outline is uneven • If the black outline is not uniform in thickness

2 Turn the notepad so it faces you. Flip open the front cover, and continue flipping through until you arrive at the prepared sheet at the rear. Be sure to hold the notepad so that your audience is unable to see the prepared drawing on the sheet.

3 Remove the black marker’s cap, and pretend to draw a picture of a 1000 yen banknote on the notepad. When you have finished “drawing” your picture, place the pen away.

THE SECRET Interlace the gimmicked sheet on the prepared notepad so that a 1000 yen drawing is visible on the page surface. Grip the bottom of the page at the location indicated in the diagram. Flip the page upward as if you were about to turn the page. The interlaced gimmick will undo itself, and the front page now displays only a black rectangle with no text printed inside.

ɶɶAdvice Raise the sheet

The writing disappears!

Grab the sheet by the cut-out notch

In addition to this gimmick that enables you to vanish the drawing, you will also need a real 1000 yen banknote, which will be hidden in the notepad. By pulling the hidden banknote from the notepad at the same time as you vanish the drawing, it will appear as if you have transformed a drawing into a real object.

To strengthen the illusion that you are drawing on the notepad, lightly scrape your fingernail against the surface of the page. The sound produced will convince your audience that you are actually drawing something. Another effective option is to use a marker that has been completely dried out, so no ink is actually drawn on the page.

4 Reposition the notepad so it is held by your left hand, as shown in the illustration. The fingers grip both the back cover and the rear sheet. Be careful not to allow the sheet to shift into an unnatural looking position.

PREPARATION (to be completed out of view of your audience) 1 Interlace the sheets as described in the previous section, so it appears as if the 1000 yen drawing is present on the page.

2 Fold a real 1000 yen banknote into quarters, and slide it into the notepad between the back cover and the interlaced sheets. Small sheet

Once the banknote has been hidden inside the notepad, close the front cover. The banknote will not easily fall out of the notepad due to friction from the sheet.

5 Hold the notepad in your left hand so that the audience can see your drawing. For best results, stand at a slight distance, and be sure to hold the notepad so that the audience has a direct frontal view. Do not tilt the notepad at an angle. If your audience watches this trick at an angle or from the side, they will be able to discover the gimmick.

6 Move your right hand to the notepad as shown in the illustration. Your

right thumb and first finger contact the front of the sheet, while your right second finger dips behind the rear cover and clips the bottom edge of the 1000 yen banknote. In this position, it should appear to your audience that you are pinching the bottom edge of the drawing.

7 Reposition the notepad in your left hand, as shown in the illustration. You are now holding the rear cover of the notepad by its edges, using only the left fingertips. Be certain not to overreach with your left fingers, as this will impede the next maneuver.

ɶɶAdvice:

There is a chance that your audience will see the secret flipping action occur if you move your hands too slowly, or if you move only one hand. The key to making this look like a truly miraculous feat of magic is for both hands to move rapidly, and together.

9 Clip the 1000 yen banknote at your right fingertips, and lightly rub 8 Flip the sheet upwards with your right fingers, while retaining a grip on the hidden banknote. At the same time, lower your left hand. This action will cause the drawing to disappear from the page, and simultaneously bring the hidden banknote into view. At the end of this flipping procedure, you now hold the pad in your left hand and a folded banknote in your right hand. Since both hands move simultaneously, the flipping action of the gimmicked notepad remains completely hidden by the movement of your right hand. This action is the most important part of the trick, so be sure to practice it numerous times in front of a mirror.

your thumb across the blank notepad surface. Show your audience that the drawing has magically vanished.

10 Close the notepad, and open up the banknote to show your audience that it is indeed genuine!

OPTIONAL PERFORMANCE IDEAS WITHOUT 1000 YEN Aside from producing 1000 yen, you can also produce US bills, Euro notes, or other thin objects such as a business card or playing card. Use a black marker to draw a picture of your desired production item on one of the small blank stickers (enclosed).

US bills

Euro notes

Ace of Hearts

Business Card (“Mr. Tanaka”)

Prepare the notepad in the same manner as described, but substitute your production item for the folded 1000 yen note. Hide your production item between the back cover and the rear sheet of the notepad, and you are ready to perform. Combine NOTE-A-BILL with a card trick of your choice, or use it to produce your business card when meeting someone new. Depending on the situation, you can customize this trick to delight and surprise your audience.
