March 2005

The sun was shining in my eyes. I could hardly see the deck of cards that I was gripping in my left hand, but I had to finish my set. It was nearing my finale so I just jumped into it. I started pointing to individuals in the audience and started revealing the questions, concerns, and images that they held tightly in their minds.

It was a sweltering day in August and I was performing as a street mentalist at the annual “Taste of Chicago” festival in Grant Park Chicago. The tips sucked, but I was cutting my teeth in this business. I needed to hone my talents and this was the place. I was getting good and making some tips, which is better then most. Anyone who has worked the “Taste,” knows how cheap “Chicagoans” truly are. But the lack of respect and tips meant nothing, I was good and I knew it. I just needed something to make me money. That’s when I met her, Helen…

Helen was the classic Gypsy con-woman. Her craft was honed. Not from a psychic gift, but rather from the years of psychology and experiences she’s had. Helen introduced herself and I made a friend. We worked out a deal, I would gather the crowds and up sell them a psychic reading and I would make 20% of the readings. Helen even offered to teach me the secret. All summer long I helped gather a crowd and I asked for the secret. Helen just kept commenting that I wasn’t ready yet to learn it. After the festival was over, Helen finally revealed her secret. What was it?

Life kid. That’s the secret? Life? It took me another year before I learned what that meant.

Here’s the secret, are you sure you’re ready?

The secret of any good reading is the reader. Know psychology and life. Fit the imagery that you’re seeing, such as the tarot symbols, into your own life and craft a story that fits those symbols into experiences from your life.

Why? Because we are ALL alike. We all act the same when we are pushed against the wall. We are naturally good and wood like to think so. This is the reason psychic readings work! The imagery and the story are fit into our lives and allow us something to believe in!

Now the real question is how do you perform a psychic reading and do it effectively?

I have found that the most effective cold readings or psychic readings use imagery to heighten the belief system. People seem to believe their own eyes, we have all heard this ancient adage but what does it mean?

When you use a divinatory form that uses imagery it has the following advantages.

The sitter seems to be seeing a real, fair, and natural interpretation of a random number of possible outcomes. Images allow the reader to craft a story using the supplied imagery, which in essence becomes a crib sheet of sorts. Little or no memory is required to tell the cold reading. You are interpreting what you see.

For the most part, it is up to the reader to establish belief in his own powers. This allows the sitter to immerse him/herself into the reading and let go. Remember if you do not know what a particular

imagery means, just ask yourself: “How does this fit into my life.” There is the real secret of a GREAT reader.

Numerology

Perhaps the strongest of all divinatory forms is that of numerology. For many millennia magi have been reading the symbolism of numbers and their appearance in nature. From astrology to straight numerology, the numbers of the universe and the mysteries of divination have always been linked.

Chinese numerology is one of the oldest forms of divination known to man. Its origins are unknown but the oldest known account of numerology was approximately 4,000 years ago. There are legends of tortoise with nine perfect squares on his back, three rows of three that was seen by Emperor Yu while on the banks of the Lo River. This is the basis of Chinese numerologies Lo Shu Square. The first thing you’ll need is a birth date for the reading. The basic square resembles a game of Tic Tac Toe! Just draw a simple Tic Tac Toe board and we’re ready to begin! How the square works: Begin at the bottom left square. The bottom left square will contain any instance of the number 1. Moving up a square are where you would include any instances of the number 2, and the top left is 3. Bottom square, center are any number 4’s and moving up are the squares 5 and 6 in sequential order. The bottom right square is 7, middle right is 8 and the top right will be 9. This is the basic layout of where your numbers go. YOU NEVER USE ANY INSTANCES OF ZERO (0). The following is a demonstration for the birth date March 12th, 1979:

First convert the month into its numerical equivalent of 03. 3

9,9

You simply fill in each number as it corresponds to the square, eliminating zero as it has no value. Meaning of the squaresBottom Row Horizontal 1, 4, & 7 The Physical: Physical work, practical, groundwork, worldly, manual labor, athletic ability, strength, and common sense. Middle Row Horizontal 2, 5, & 8 The Emotional: Feelings, intuition, spirituality and emotions. Top Row Horizontal 3, 6, & 9 The Mental: Analytical, imaginative and thinking abilities. Bottom Row Vertical 1, 2, & 3 The Wisdom: Intellectual capacity, creative ability, and creativity capacity. Middle Row Vertical 4, 5, & 6 The Will: Determination, persistence and stubbornness.

Right Row Vertical 7, 8, & 9 The Action: Ability to put ideas or thoughts into action. The meaning of the numbersThere are many interpretations of numbers for numerology, the best way to perform numerology is to invent your own meanings, what do the numbers mean to you. Here are my interpretations. One: The independence. Originality. The ability to work on one’s own. Two: Diplomacy. Relationship. The successful interaction with others. Political ability and affiliations. Three: The creative. Unused creative potential. Expression of one's own imagination. Four: Hard work. The physical. Determination. Strength. Morals. Order and discipline. Five: Travel, change, unsettling, the disliking of confinement. A free spirit a need to travel. Six: The need for family. Closeness to family members. Seven: The psychic and spiritual. The ability of the intuition and religious conformity. Might not be traditional religious belief structure. Eight: Money, wealth, achievement through hard work. Nine: Humanity. The pursuit of equality and enlightenment.

The more of a particular number in a square the more that meaning has to that individual’s life. Here’s a sample reading for our example.

“The One is telling me: You are an extremely independent individual drawn to unique demonstrations and out bursts of the creative and individualism within you. The Two tells me: You find it hard at times to relate to others; however you have learned that you need to keep your mouth closed at times. The Three tells me: You have an innate creativity that you do not use but is still there deeply buried. The Seven tells me: I would even say that you have a keen intuition from your soul searching and personal insights. This intuition even makes you feel at times that you are psychic! The Nine tells me: All of this though leads us to the double nines which show me that you live for a higher purpose. You are righteous and just by your own creation. You truly are a humanitarian.”

Playing Card Divination, Cartomancy

One thing that almost everybody has in their homes and sometimes even on their person is a deck of playing cards. This is why I have devised a method for providing a psychic reading by using playing cards. It’s not as in depth and defined as the Tarot is, however it does play strong. I have used this method for years ever since my very first corporate gig. It is fast and efficient allowing you to perform for a large crowd. Remember you can always offer this as an up sell to any magical performance you may be performing.

The Spread: The basic spread is that of a triple cut. To start have a “sitter” shuffle and cut the deck into three separate but equal piles with their non dominant hand, and flip over the top card of each pile.

Why non dominant? I have no idea but it adds more depth and realism to your performance. I have to thank a fellow mind reader named Tom for this subtlety.

The following table will represent the 3 pile spread… 6D

Past

Future

Clubs- mean hard work and worldly endeavors including work and career. Hearts- relate to matters of the heart and soul. Spades- matters of change, destruction, a new beginning. Diamonds- matters of finance, riches, and money.

If you were going to use the above mentioned numerology, a reading based on the definitions would go something like this:

“The six of diamonds shows us that you are of a financial stable family. I don’t think you are overtly wealthy, and every dollar that you have you have worked for. The five of hearts shows me that you have had at least of true love that has moved on. There’s a distance there. I am also getting that you have never fully gotten over that person and they are still in your mind. The two of clubs is showing a need for diplomacy in your future. A roughness, or a fight, is coming and you will need to learn to keep from exploding. Restraint at work is a necessity if you wish to get that promotion!”

Now in all honesty, you could simply give them a numerology reading using the supplied meanings of the numbers as defined above, but adding depth, meaning, and imagery to a reading heightens your success rate!

I turn the playing cards into a phonetic representation. I take the first letter of the suit and the verbal representation of the number and make a word out of them. This word will serve as a visual or rather mental cue for your mind to make up more depth of imagery for your reading!

Of course as all good psychics know, the meanings are an internal rendering of symbols so use the phonetics to create your own imagery. If you are having trouble, simply memorize the one’s above. Since I am bad with memorization, I used some mental imagery searching and came up with the above list.

Here’s the expanded explanation of our previous spread:

“The six of diamonds shows us that you are of a financial stable family. I don’t think you are overtly wealthy, and every dollar that you have you have worked for. I do see in the past that you have been secure in your financial concerns and have made a moderate and stable amount of money for yourself. The five of hearts shows me that you have had at least of true love that has moved on. There’s a distance there. I am also getting that you have never fully gotten over that person and they are still in your mind. The feeling of love is around you. It is a strong concern although I do not get that you are the type of individual who is completely wrapped up in romance and romance novels. You are looking for that one Night in Shining Armor, and it worries you that you might have missed him. I am seeing that the love and pursuit of love that is around you is strong and will come to a positive outcome in the near future. The two of clubs is showing a need for diplomacy in your future. A roughness, or a fight, is coming and you will need to learn to keep from exploding. Restraint at work is a necessity if you wish to get that promotion! I am also seeing an ease of dealing with animals rather then people. Did you ever have a cat or dog? I sense a strong spiritual bond with an animal in your future.”

By adding all the imagery you have just given an effective psychic cold reading that occupies many avenues of one’s life. The hits will hit and the misses hopefully will be small to none!

I wish you much success in performing! You will find that with the knowledge of numerology and basic cartomancy, you will never be with out an edge above other performers. This can mean a higher fee at corporate events, restaurant gigs, and higher tips!

Remember to treat every sitter with respect!

Never make false claims.

Let all sitters leave feeling flattered and happy.

It is your right to stop a reading at any time if the sitter shows a lack of respect.

Always make sure your get your fee up front!
