Introduction – Occupational health is essentially preventive medicine. Preventive medicine and occupational health have the same aim- the prevention of disease and maintenance of the highest degree of physical, mental and social well-being of workers in all occupations; the levels of application of preventive measures are the same- health promotion, specific protection, early diagnosis and treatment, disability limitation and rehabilitation. Occupational health therefore is the application of preventive in all places of employment.

Definition - “Occupational health should aim at the promotion and maintenance of the highest degree of physical, mental and social well-being of workers in all occupations; the prevention amongst workers of departments of health caused by their working conditions; the protection of workers in their employment from risks resulting from factors adverse to health; the placing and maintenance of the worker in an occupational environment adapted to his physiological and psychological capabilities and to summarize, the adaptation of work to man and of each man to his job.”

The maintenance and promotion of worker’s health and working capacity. The improvement of working environment and work to become conducive to safety and health. Development of work organizations and working cultures in a direction which supports health and safety at work and in doing so also promotes a positive social climate and smooth operation may enhance productivity of the undertaking.

OCCUPATIONAL ENVIRONMENT Occupational environment is the sum of external conditions and influences which prevail at the place of work and which have a bearing effect on the health of the working population. The industrial worker today is placed in a highly complicated environment which is getting more complicated as man is becoming more ingenious. Basically there are three types of interaction in a working environment(a) Man and physical, biological and chemical agents (b) Man and machine (c) Man and man

Man And Physical, Biological And Chemical Agents 1) Physical agents The physical factors in the working environment which may be adverse to health are heat, cold, humidity, air movement, heat radiation, light, noise, vibrations and ionizing radiations. 2) Chemical agents These comprise a large number of chemicals, toxic dusts and gases which are potential hazards to health of the workers. Some chemical agents cause respiratory illness, some cause injury to the skin and some may have a deleterious effect on the blood and other organs of the body. 3) Biological agents The workers may be exposed to viral, rickettsial, bacterial and parasitic agents which may result from close contact with animals or their products, contaminated water, soil or food. Heat : Heat hyper pyrexia, heat exhaustion, heat syncope, heat cramps, burns and local effects such as prickly heat. Cold : Trench Foot, Frost bite, Chilblains. Light : Occupational Cataract, Miner’s Nystagmus Pressure: Caisson disease, air embolism, blast (explosion) Noise : Occupational Deafness Radiation :Cancer, Leukaemia, aplastic anemia, pancytopenia. Mechanical factors: Injuries and accidents Electricity: Burns

THE EMPLOYEE STATE INSURANCE ACT, 1948 An industrial work is exposed to the risk of occupational diseases and accident which creates feeling of physical, economic and social insecurity. It is the responsibility of employer and the state to provide ensure for the situations. Efforts in this direction started with enactment of Workmen’s compensation act of 1923 and the Maternity act which followed thereafter. The Employee state Insurance Act which was enacted in 1948, proved to be very beneficial stops toward social security of factory workers. The act elevates economic and physical suffering by providing benefits in cash and kind during sickness, maternity and occupational injury

The occupational health nurse has her primary responsibility towards workers to promote, protect and preserve their health. She also has her responsibility towards her employer to protect the company from adverse effects of work processes and hazardous substances on workers FUNCTION: 1. Carrying out the therapeutic programme designed by physicians for sick patients including personal services aimed at hygiene and comfort. 2. Maintenance of the physical and psychological environment conducive to recovery ans health. 3. Engaging the patients and his family in his recovery and rehabilitation. 4. Carrying out measures for the prevention of diseases. 5. Instructing people sick or well in measures promoting total health (physical and health) in appositive sense. 6. Co-coordinating nursing efforts with other members of community groups.
