T

he Swabian Jura, sometimes also called the Swabian Alb or Swabian Alps in English, is a low mountain range, more precisely a high plateau, the largest part of which lies in Baden-Württemberg. In the summer of 2017, six caves in the Ach and Lone Valleys, entitled “Caves and Ice Age in the Swabian Jura”, received UNESCO's World Cultural Heritage status. Here, archaeologists have discovered many thousands of years old sculptural legacies of human kind. The caves are sites of the oldest art objects in the world: carved from mammal bone, e.g. a horse’s head, an aquatic bird, a human-like figure with the head of a lion, a finger-sized statue of a female torso – “the Venus of Hohle Fels” (also known as “the Venus of Schelklingen”) – named after its location, and a flute about 20cm (ca 8”) long. Of particular interest to bead enthusiasts: hun-

dreds of beads from mammoth ivory have also been found here. Primarily, beads a few millimeters to 1 centimeter in size with two holes and a central bar (similar to the SuperDuo beads) as well as slightly larger bar-shaped beads with three holes are typical for the site of the find in the Swabian Jura. That these types of beads are known only from these excavation sites leads the scientists to hypothesize that they were a visible expression of a local group’s identity. “Apart from figural works of art and musical instruments, the development of jewelry as a personal and social expression is an important element of cultural development 40,000 years ago. The range of materials and shapes is presented in our museum”, noted Dr. Stefani Kölbl, Executive Director of the Museum of Prehistory in Blaubeuren, Germany. www.urmu.de

Fine precision in small spaces The Matubo seed bead is now available in size 11° (manufactured by Matura Beads s.r.o, Czech Republic). It is available in a wealth of colors and coatings. What’s exceptional is that these very small beads are produced using press molds rather than the usual method of using glass tubes

that are cut. This way, they are very precise in both shape and size. Seen in Project 4 “Square Flower” Ring by Nela Kàbelovà on page 41 of this issue. www.maturabeads.cz

Thin and strong The designer Debra Schwarz (DatzKatz Designs) sent us this: KastKing SuperPower (seen, for example, on eBay) is a strong, abrasion-resistant braided thread (a fishing tackle product), which is suitable both for use in beading techniques as well as for stringing beads. It is only about half as thick as FireLine. Due to its special strength, KastKing will not accidently be sewn through during beading. It is available in various thicknesses and colors. Also interesting: the even thinner and stronger KastKing Fortis.

At a glance The BeadSmith flip-top box is outstanding for the storage of seed beads. It is very easy to open and close the box with its flip mechanism. It can also be used for larger beads as you can also just remove the entire top. Identifying different colored beads is a breeze due to the transparent plastic case. The boxes are stackable due to their standard widths and depths (currently available on the market in seven sizes) and lend themselves well to marking with adhesive labels due to their smooth and relatively large side panels. Seen in many places – ask your local bead shop.

Well placed A magnetic board with positionable magnetic strips is very useful for counting the rows and colors of counted charts (e.g., peyote and crochet patterns). You don’t lose your place in the line while reading it. It works as follows: A pattern printed on paper is fixed onto the board. A long magnetic clamping strip is placed underneath the row you want to work. You pick up the beads in the order indicated. To work the next row, just slide the bar one further. You repeat the same procedure until you reach the end of the pattern. Since the magnetic line remains in the same place, it is also easy to set aside and work at a later time. Size ca. 20 x 29.5 cm (ca. 8” x 11.5”). Available at www.buttinette.com

Captivating The Artistic Wire Knitter Tool is similar to a knitting spool. It can be used to make knitted ropes out of jewelry wire. How it works is the thin wires are gripped with a crochet hook or beading awl and pulled over the metal spokes. It is recommended to weight the resulting knitted weave with Kumihomo/Knitter Weights in order to obtain a uniform tension. To create different patterns, you can try different stitches. Designs with integrated beads are also popular. The tool is available in two versions: with 4 spokes (for a looser weave) or with 6 spokes (for a tighter weave). Available at www.beadalon.com

Lives with a special challenge “Neytiri's”, 2015: The designer designed the necklace after seeing the film "Avatar", where blossoms open and close when touched. The beaded strands have wire inside, so they can be shaped as desired. The piece achieved first place in the seed bead contest of FMG in the category "Bib and collar style" 2016.

rom this combination she has created something wonderful. Let’s start by saying that she is an “HSP”, as scientists put it, a Highly Sensitive Person. She speaks openly about it. It doesn’t mean that someone is ill, but has a particularly sensitive nervous system that perceives subtleties in the surroundings quickly and with a wealth of nuances, processing complex information that one feels more intensively and in which impressions long resonate. It is the opposite of being a “thick-skinned person” – even if they would like it sometimes, because life with its many “disturbances” (stimulus flooding) is often too strenuous. By the way, scientists estimate that 15–20 % of the population is highly sensitive, but try to ignore it. For about 10 years, she has also suffered from an intolerance to light, k

“Seduction”, 2015: In the neck portion (collar) of the jewelry ensemble, miniatures of paintings showing people involved in the game of seduction are inserted behind the square Swarovski crystals. The front centerpiece shows Sir Frank Dicksee’s “La Belle Dame sans Merci” (The Beautiful Lady without Mercy). The dragon figures are held by heartshaped chain links. Their burning breaths represent the “soul on fire”. In the lower portion we find a real perfume bottle. Necklace and collar portions can be worn separately, the latter is reversible. The composition was a finalist in the seed bead contest of FMG 2016. ‡ Perlen Poesie ‡ 35 ‡ 2018 ‡

“Atoll”, 2006: “With this design, my obsession with beads began. For two years I carried the idea with me, but I knew so little about working with beads, nothing about the materials used, yet once I get something in my head ... it’s inspired by a photograph of Yann Arthus Bertrand, ‘The Eye of the Maldives’. It was among the finalists of the 2007 FMG beading contest.”

which means that she cannot bear to have sunrays or rays of artificial light land directly on her. She also has problems with electromagnetism. It’s why she spends a lot of her time in her home, which she has perfectly adapted to her needs and her two hobbies – zebra finches and beads. Born in the Netherlands, she moved to Switzerland at the age of ten because her father took a position as an engineer for welding

technologies. Although it wasn’t easy, she learned to appreciate the advantages and beauties of this country: she went to the 500-year-old college “Calvin” in Geneva, learned to sail on Lake Geneva, to ski in the mountains – and later met her husband there.

“Roma”, also known as “Peeking Pearls”, 2005: “The set is inspired by ancient Roman open metal necklaces, the Torques. I wanted to create a bent peyote tube, which would consist of the same seed beads in its entire length. It won the Grand Gold Prize of the 2006 FMG bead contest.”

How did she discover beads as a medium for relaxation, experimentation, and expressing herself?

S

he says: “My mother had learned to work with beads from her friend Berthy Bijlard, which brought me into contact with this material. She also did cross-stitching. Berthy was an art therapist. I don’t know if this was the exact job title, but she was in charge of a large art class in a clinic, where patients could learn, among other crafts, painting, knitting, sewing, beading and cross-stitching. I was friends with her daughter, Lisette, and was often at her house. This togetherness sparked the fire of creativity in me. In my youth, I lived through a difficult time in which my mother lost her fight against cancer, and I, my interest in handicrafts.

“My left hemisphere is a control freak that likes geometric forms; my right is a poet who is in love with the splendor of nature and all living creatures.”

“The Leaf”, 2016: “This necklace was designed for the IBA 2016 competition, which had the motto ‘From Cubism to Art Deco’. I had the idea to create a design with many Trapezinos (Editor's Note: folded bezels for crystals, created by the artist), as they drop a lot of light onto crystals. I noticed that a leaf shape had been formed between the connections of their points.”

“Souls”, 2013: “This piece with the lifelike vines was created for the BOTB competition and is an allegory on the course a life takes. It is studded with crystals and contains the colors of the Chakras. This piece is very important to me.” ‡ Perlen Poesie ‡ 35 ‡ 2018 ‡

Was paid “in beads” at her request

“Tribute to Jane Goodall”, 2016: “This is a sculpture or a toy with 2 figurines – one up, one down – in petals, that can be worn as a pendant; either Jane shows herself in a colorful dress – her head is century-old porcelain – or a great ape, sitting in green grasses. All the petals are flexible enough to be opened or closed. I designed this particular piece as a fundraiser for the Jane Goodall Institute to support their actions promoting awareness of nature conservation.”

“Unfinished Waves and Flames”, 2017: “This zigzag form is worked with twisted Peyote (Cellini), and a 'happy mistake' that I didn‘t correct, so I could use the resulting effect.”

Later, I got married. My mother-in-law also loved handicrafts, which encouraged me to embroider. When I saw a winner’s beaded jewelry set on the Internet (Fire Mountain Gems 2004 contest) by the designer Diane Dennis, as well as the finalists of that year’s Bead Dreams competition, I left embroidery behind. Deeply touched, I realized what beauties, what jewels could be conjured out of beads. At that time, Swarovski Bicones were in vogue; but, through my sensitivity, they seemed to be too glittery, too sharp-edged. Here, however, they had been joined together with seed beads to form beautiful landscapes, corals and other organic structures. It was “painting with pixels” in 3-D – something I also wanted to do! I began with the creation of a dream necklace in navy blue and sand tones, but couldn’t afford the supplies to bring it to fruition. Then I got the opportunity to help with the preparation of a dissertation and was paid, at my request, in beads! The time had come: my dream necklace “Atoll” became a reality – the beginning of the journey of discovery led by my inner voice. Another of my first pieces is “Roma”. Although I have learned all the techniques, my favorite technique is peyote: with this stitch, beads fall very naturally into their places and pieces can be easily zipped together. Here I can live out my experimental spirit, for instance, my joy of folding and bending. For example, I love shapes with an even number of increases, as they can be folded and zipped well. Thus, from a folded-together quadrangle you get a kind of triangular wing, a trapezoid from a hexagon. A beaded piece with many points can become a pretty, naturally curved flower. k

“Mokuren”, 2011: “The asymmetric necklace was awarded second place in the Bead Mavens competition with the motto ‘Vernal Visions’. The title is the Japanese term for magnolias. Fresh blossoms are featured, appearing on still bare branches. The two front elements (bezeled crystals) can be moved, which allows a fine adjustment of the necklace.”

Loves nature with all its creatures and wants to give something back

“I often use playful tactics to create something. For example, I’ll use a set numbers of beads repetitively to see which forms arise from them.”

I

founded the Facebook group “From Petal to Pod” – a result of my love of nature. It offers all my friends a platform where they can display the objects they have achieved using the aforementioned technique, such as flowers, leaves and much more. In my small PDF booklet, I ask people to make a donation to a nature-preserving organization, if they should make money using this technique.” This is the heart of the artist: it is her deep desire to give something useful to the world. How can you do this when you have to spend most of your time indoors? Cath has found ways. Her pendant “Tribute to Jane Goodall” was created to be a fundraiser for the Jane Goodall Institute for the protection of wild animals. Cath also participates in collaborative projects (beaded objects) for good causes, such as a memorial dedicated to deceased relatives. She writes instructions for projects, the proceeds of which are donated to charitable foundations (for the protection of honey bees, among others). She presents the works of other designers: solidarity among artists is important to her. She generously shares beading technique developments in order to stimulate the pleasure of experimentation in others and to exchange ideas. If she were more robust, she could see herself as an activist, a "Rainbow Warrior" (borrowed from the name of the ship of the Greenpeace environmental organization that was sunk in New Zealand in 1985). But she also beads to tell stories. Her works “Souls”, “Seduction” and “Time has Wings” express how beautiful and precious life is, how strong love can be, and how mysterious time is. “When people are touched by it, it is a success for me. They are usually pieces for competitions, for which I go off the usual paths – which improves my skills”.

“Kanagawa Wave Cuff”, 2013: “This bracelet appeared in the ‘Contemporary Geometric Beadwork’ book by Kate McKinnon, and is inspired by the polychrome woodblock print by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai, ‘The Great Wave off Kanagawa’.”

B

eading has become Cath Thomas’ refuge. “I immerse myself in the creative process to stay strong in a world where my physical condition doesn’t fit. I miss the nature, the sea, the sun and the forests. The happiness I find in creativity has helped me in many ways: I no longer smoke, have been able to stop taking medication, and share my happiness via Facebook, through which I am connected with like-minded people around the world.” Cath Thomas has published tutorials in magazines and has has contributed to books, such as “Contemporary Geometric Beadwork” 1 to 3 by Kate McKinnon; she, together with the inventor of the beading stitch ‘diamond weave’, Gerlinde Lenz, has written the book “Diamond Weave”. She is a profound, versatile and sensitive artist who will definitely inspire us further. Andrea Ott

nd so we continue with our clever Swarovski bezels. This time we’ll be addressing three bezels for more common crystals in rather square forms: Classical Square 16 mm, Octagon 18 x 13 mm and Square Octagon 23 mm. The basic technique used was explained in issue 34 of Perlen Poesie, and is based on the popular RAW (Right Angle Weave). More extensive information is available in the book “To Catch a Crystal”, published by BEADERS BEST Publishing: www.perlen-poesie.com/books. Important here is the careful attention needed to produce this narrower version, which guarantees a secure hold of the crystals with the maximum amount of surface left visible.

Repeat continuously until there are no more beads left. Keep the thread tension even without twisting the work piece. If necessary wax the thread. Tip: You can easily adjust the length of the bangle by adding or omitting 6 mde (= 1 rapport/pattern) or a multiple thereof. Please keep in mind: If you lengthen the bangle you will need more beads accordingly.

3

5

3 Finish both halves as shown in the diagram in peyote one at a time (see also the stitch pattern in the diagram of step 4). Do not forget to step up at the end of each round! The dotted lines mark the width of the rapport.

4

5 Insert 1 mde into the middle of each small diamond as shown in the diagram (stitch-inthe-ditch). You will work a total of 6 rounds in this manner, 3 rounds with each needle. Keep the thread tension tight. Later you will fasten the surface embellishment to these mde.

2 2 At the end, both ends of thread protrude from the last mde-c. Bring the just made band into a round without twisting it and pass through 1 mde on the other band end with needle #1. Repeat with needle #2.

6

4 The pattern shows the entire base of the bangle with a total width of 23 rounds (counted diagonally). There are large diamonds in the middle, above and below are small diamonds.

7

8

36

6 Embellishment: Use both ends of thread and pass forward to and through 2 opposite mde-a on both sides of the middle. Pick up 1 bc4, 1 sb15 and 1 bc4 on the right thread and pass through the diagonally opposite mde-a according to the diagram. On the left thread, pick up 1 bc4, pass through the sb15 between the 2 bc4. Pick up 1 bc4 and pass through the diagonally opposite mde-a. Pull the thread thoroughly tight. Repeat this step all around.

7 Exit 1 mde-a with needle #1 as shown in the diagram, pick up 1 sb15 and 1 bc3-f and pass through the mde-a in the middle of the nearest diamond diagonally over it. Pick up 1 bc3-f and 1 sb15 and pass through the next mde-a before 1 bc4. Repeat this step all around. Repeat on the 2nd half of the bangle with the other end of thread mirroring the 1st half.

25 Pick up 1 cmbe-a through a side hole and pass through the upper hole of the 1st rear cmbe-a. Pick up

1 cmbe-a through a side hole and pass through the 2nd rear cmbe-a. Pick up 1 cmbe-a through a side hole and turn through the rear hole (rotational axis) of the nearest cmba, and follow the thread path until you have passed through the last cmba on the rotational axis (dotted yellow line). Turn through the lower hole of the 1st new cmbe-a and follow the thread path until you have passed through the lower hole of the 3rd cmbe-a. Repeat steps 18–25, each time increasing the number of cmba, cmbe-b, fp4 and cmbe-a by 1. Continue in this manner until you have incorporated a total of 7 cmbe-b into the last fan element and there are 5 cmbe-a on the upper edge of which the upper hole has not yet been passed through (see back view). Secure the thread and trim. Remove the stop bead from the tail, secure and trim this thread as well. ‡ Perlen Poesie ‡ 35 ‡ 2018 ‡ rear view

24 Fold the just made fan element down, the rotational axis is the connection of the 3 cmba to the 2 cmbe-a. Pass through 3 sb11 and the rear hole of the cmba (rotational axis). Following the thread path continue through the next cmbe-a and cmba until you have passed through the last cmba.

Beadweaving 26

26 Pick up the beading wire and push it through the upper hole of the 1st cmbe-a on the upper edge of the pendant. Position 1 sb8-d between the cmbe-a and push the wire through the sb8-d and the upper hole of the following cmbe-a. Position a total of 4 sb8-d between the cmbe-a in this manner. Align the wire centered in a way that the wire ends on

both sides are roughly of the same length. On the 1st wire end, pick up 1 sb8-c, 1 fp6, 1 sb8-c, * 5 sb11, 1 sb8-c, 1 fp4 and 1 sb8-c. Repeat from * increasing the number of sb11 by 1 each time until you have picked up a total of 12 sb11.

27

27 Pick up 1 fp6 and 1 sb8-c and pass through the 1st crimp bead. Attach the wire guard to the 1st half of the clasp. Push the beading wire back through the wire guard and the crimp bead. Squeeze the crimp bead with the pliers. Place the cover over it and close. In the same manner, string beads on the 2nd half of beading wire and finish with the 2nd half of the clasp.

47

Variation Repeat steps 1–25 but replace each mg by 1 DemiRound 8° (dr). Steps 26 and 27: Cut 1.5 m (60˝) of thread and thread a needle. Attach any stop bead. Stringing: 1 fp6, * 1 dr, 1 fp4, 1 dr, 15 sb11. Repeat from * five times. Pick up 1 dr, 1 fp4, 1 dr, 1 fp6 and 1 dr. Pass through the upper hole of the 1st cmbe-a. Position 1 dr between the cmbe-a and push the beading wire through the dr and the upper hole of the following cmbe-a. In this manner, add 2 dr in each of the next 2 gaps and add 1 dr into the last gap. Then mirroring the 1st half of the necklace pick up 1 dr, 1 fp6, * 1 dr, 1 fp4, 1 dr and 15 sb11. Repeat from * five

times. Pick up 1 dr, 1 fp4, 1 dr, 1 fp6 and 3 sb11. A visit to the studio of Yuni Canosa. She gives us insight into the art of haute couture embroidery.

uni Canosa fulfills wishes both from designers of the haute couture as well as from private customers. She designs clothes and elaborately embroiders them. The motifs can be flat or raised, made of the most diverse materials – beads, sequins, feathers, plastic and threads of every kind. They are embroidered onto various fabrics from light and airy, such as tulle and organza, to solid and thick fabrics. The history of her needlecrafting began in Andalusia a long time ago. This southernmost region of Spain has a long tradition in weaving, embroidery and the manufacture of lace. From

family tradition and began to design dresses, especially wedding dresses, and decorate them in the techniques of haute couture embroidery. Her skills and experience were her best advertising. The place where she lives with her family is Gioia del Colle (Apulia region), a city famous for making elaborate wedding dresses – a beautiful coincidence. Both here and in neighboring Putignano orders for Italian fashion designers – like Valentino – are filled. She works as a freelancer in a fashion studio that fills such orders, but is also known for making beautiful individual wedding dresses for private clients – according to their own ideas.* She and colleague Angela Antonicelli are a winning team when uni herself performed as a salsa dancer and it comes to the development of ideas for a dress, sketching the studied genetics at the university. This was free design and its embellishment with embroidery techniques and of charge and reserved only for those who had material determination. Furthermore, she is soon to be openalready been selected by government officials for ing her own fashion jewelry studio. In addition, she teaches apgood scholastic performance during their school prentices, the female students of a fashion school, who are time. grandmother, Yuni enthusiastically learned countless handwork techniques. Under the tense regime of Castro there were times when the electricity was turned off in the evening for 12 hours. The artist reports that her great-grandmother then told the children all the stories and legends of Granada (Andalusia, Spain) in the dark, of which a lot were about Arab princesses. She continued in this vein about the art of procuring embroidery materials – that there was little in the economy of scarcity. For example, the great-grandmother once persuaded a man to melt glass bottles and make beads out of them.

techniques. She says, “When a designer comes to you, he has a picture in his head, wants to create a certain atmosphere, and he wants to do it with your help. Then you have to have ideas – he‘s interested in this and not what techniques you use for it. Only if you can work like that, is professional success imaginable. So when students are able to develop ideas for design and the use of materials, they can learn and practice the techniques later in practice. That is my opinion.” Bracelet in embroidery with inserted painting. “For this corsage, the idea came suddenly to me; it was executed in Stumpwork with many Swarovski crystals. I really like it!”

Embroidery design: “I love being inspired by Indian, French, Italian and Spanish embroidery in my work. I try to imitate them and to approximate the old craftsmanship the best I can.”

W

e asked Yuni to name the various embroidery techniques that she herself uses. She listed: Lunéville – named after the French city of the same name – where decorative materials such as beads, sequins and threads are applied from the back of the embroidery frame with the help of a kind of fine crochet needle; Gold embroidery – the embroidery of ornaments with gold, but also other metallized threads; White embroidery – here threads in different white shades are embroidered and, especially with wedding dresses, additionally decorated with white sequins and beads or other white materials. Her favorite technique, however, is “stumpwork”, an embroidery technique in which all kinds of self-created forms raise off of the fabric surface. Simply put, the design is embroidered in various layers, e.g. over thick threads, wire or felt. This technique is so versatile that you can use it for brooches, bridal hairpieces and pendants as well as three-dimensional effects on clothes and bags. It can be adapted to many kinds of wearable jewelry. „It is,“ as the artist says, „an embroidery technique in which only the imagination sets the limits.”

3 String 1 sb15-i onto the long wire end and bring the wire up behind the arc of a pw20-a element.

6

4 Wrap the wire closely around the arc once. String 1 sb15-i onto the wire, bring the wire down behind the pw18 element and wrap it closely around the arc once.

5 Repeat steps 3 and 4 six times until the space between the arcs has been filled.

8

7

6 Wrap the end of the wire around twice to secure. Trim off the end.

9

7 Cut a piece of pw24-e of 30.5 cm (12˝) length and bend a loop at one end with the round nose pliers as shown in the picture.

10

8 Hold the wire directly beside the previous curve with the front part of the round nose pliers and bend the wire around the pliers until you have made a small three-quarter circle. Readjust the pliers and bend the wire until you have made a full circle.

11

75

9 Repeat the previous step as often as needed to make an element of side-by-side loops slightly longer than the wire element of pw20-a; make sure to use the same part of the round nose pliers all the time to get even sized loops. Tip: Mark the starting point with a pen or a piece of adhesive tape. Cut 5 cm (2˝) off the pw24-d and bend a loop at one end of the wire. Cut 20 cm (8˝) off the pw28-g and push one wire end through the loop at the end of the pw20-a element. Leave an extension of 2.5 cm (1˝) of wire. Wrap the long wire end around the pw20-a once.

10 Make another wrapping including the loop of the pw24-d.

12

11 Make one more wrapping including the 1st loop of the pw24-e element and again the loop on the pw24-d. ** Conversion wire diameter 18 gauge = 1.02 mm 20 gauge = 0.81 mm 24 gauge = 0.51 mm 28 gauge = 0.32 mm

12 Make wrappings along the elements until you have reached the other end, pushing the wire between each sb15-i on the gold pw20-a. At the end, bend a P-shaped loop with the pw24-d, trim the leftover wire. Make 2 more wrappings with the pw28-g which include the pw20-a, the pw24-d and the pw24-e. Trim the leftover wire.

13 Cut 57 mm (2.25˝) of both the pw20-b and pw24-d, slightly curve them centrally and bend 1 P-shaped loop on each end. The elements should be slightly longer than the element made of pw24-e.

14 Cut a 30.5 cm (12˝) piece of pw28-g and attach it to the outer loops of the previous element with 2 wrappings, leaving a 2.5 cm (1˝) extension.

15 Concurrently attach both new wire elements to the element of pw24-e, bringing the wire through the 1st loop.

16

17

18

16 String 4 sb15-h onto the wire and wrap it around the pw24-d, pw20-b and the next loop of the pw24-e twice.

19

19 Cut 1 piece of pw28-f of 25 cm (9.8˝) and attach the new element with loops to the work piece as shown in the previous steps; pass the wire between the 2nd and 3rd sb15-h.

17 Repeat the previous step until you have reached the opposite end. If the 2 newly added wire elements are too long, shorten the wire piece by piece and readjust the loop with each step. At the end, secure the pw28-g with 2 wrappings through the loops, cut off the leftover wire.

18 Cut 1 piece of pw24-c of 38 cm (15˝) and bend it like the pw24-e in step 9 into a slightly longer element with loops.

20

21

20 Make a loop at the beginning of a short piece of pw18. String 2 fp onto the wire. Bend the end also into a loop. Cut off the leftover wire. Make 1 more piece in the same manner, but this time hook the 1st loop into the outer loop of the pw18 piece of wire on the work piece and connect the 2nd loop with the 1st piece of wire. Make 2 pieces of this kind and attach them to the work piece.

21 Make 4 pieces with 1 fp each in the same manner, making pairs of 2 pieces each and wrap twice around the wire after each loop. Attach 1 of these pieces on each side of the loop on the PW20-G of the work piece. Make a 2nd earring in the same manner.

International Bead Award 2018

My Paradise This term has a different meaning for everyone. What does paradise mean to you? Do you already have it; are you wishing and/or waiting for it? The motto for the International Bead Award 2018 is: “My Paradise”. This gives you the opportunity to play around with your idea of paradise – and have plenty of time and ease to do it. All sorts of materials and techniques may be used as long as glass beads play the main role – and that means using the hole/thread channel as such, so please don’t just glue beads onto something! Eligible are jewelry and accessories as well as objects (such as room decorations), but only those that have never been published elsewhere. In a few sentences, please explain what idea/concept|inspiration led you to design the piece. In addition to neat workmanship, it’s all about imagination and originality – the latter are heavily weighted in the judging. Therefore, non-professionals also have a good chance of being among the 25 nominees or 10 winners! There is also the Readers’ Choice Award.

88

Submissions can be made on the Perlen Poesie website under the menu item „IBA “IBA 2018” beginning on September 1, 2018. Submission deadline is October 31, 2018. The winners will be named and receive gifts from participating company sponsors. The members of the jury will be announced soon. In closing: The pleasure of participation is the main focus – not everyone can be a winner! In addition to the design and idea, the tastes of the individual jury members play a major role. And in the final round, there are often only minimal differences in the scores, so luck plays a role here, too, when it comes to which place one receives. Ultimately, anyone who participates and creates his or her completely individual paradise, no matter its size, is a winner. We wish you lots of fun in your search for paradise – and look forward to what you share with us. On behalf of the Perlen Poesie team: Andrea Ott

Have you tried these yet? From the bag of tricks of experienced beaders Adding more Fireline Fireline thread is very slippery and difficult to knot. To keep the thread from slipping through a knot, use a thread burner to melt the ends of the old and the new threads to form a tiny blob. You can use a lighter, but a thread burner is safer and better to control the size of the melted plastic. Attach the old and new threads to each other with a square knot. Pull tight and continue beading. The blob will hinder the threads from escaping. Cath Thomas, Switzerland

Casual, classy, versatile: The soft flexible necklace in diamond weave is reversible, can be twisted into a spiral, wrapped around the wrist and easily knotted. The pendant can also be an element of interior design.

1 2 3 Necklace: Cut 2 m (80˝) of K.O. beading thread, stretch it and thread a needle leaving a 40 cm (16˝) tail. Attach a stop bead by passing twice through any bead, making sure that you do not stitch through the thread. Pick up 4 sb11 and close them into a round by passing through the 1st sb11 again (= 1st diamond shape). Tip of the artist: Use a matte seed bead as stop bead; because of its slightly rough surface it will stop the thread more than a shiny one.

3 Pick up 1 mde-a, 1 rb-d and 1 mde-a and pass through the 4th, 1st and 2nd sb11 in the 1st diamond shape. The right diagram of this and the next steps will show the work piece after the thread was pulled tight.

6 5 Pass through 1 mde-a, 1 rb-d, 1 mde-a and the 2nd sb11 of the 2nd diamond shape. Pick up 1 mde-a and 4 sb11. Pass back through the mde-a and pass through the 3rd sb11 of the 2nd diamond shape, 1 mde-a, 1 rb-c, 1 mde-a, the 2nd sb11 of the 1st diamond shape, 1 mde-a and the 1st sb11 of the 3rd diamond shape. Keep the thread tension tight.

8

8 Repeat steps 4–7 continuously until you have a total length of 1 m (40˝) approx. 212 rounds. Adjust the length to your measurements by adding or omitting rounds. It should be possible to wrap the band twice around the neck and wear it decoratively or as a bracelet it should fit five times around the wrist. Exit 1 sb11 on a narrow edge, pick up 1 mde-a, 2 sb11, 1 half of the clasp, 2 sb11 and 1 mde-a and pass through the diagonally opposite sb11, 1 mde-a, 1 rb-d, 1 mde-a and the following sb11.

6 Pick up 1 mde-a, 1 rb-c and 1 mde-a and pass through the 4th and 1st sb11 of the 4th diamond shape.

9

9 Again, pass back through the beaded arc of 1 mde-a, 2 sb11, 1 half of the clasp, 2 sb11 and 1 mde-a and through the opposite sb11 in a way that the beaded arc is attached to all sb11 on the narrow edge. Continue through 1 mde-a, 1 rb-c, 1 mde-a and 1 sb11. Secure the thread and trim. Repeat steps 8 and 9 on the opposite narrow edge of the work piece. In advance, remove the stop bead!

4 3

1 2

4 Pick up 1 mde-a and 4 sb11. Pass back through the mde-a and through the 3rd sb11 of the 1st diamond shape. Keep the thread tension tight in a way that the beads are closely together.

7 Pick up 1 mde-a, 1 rb-d and 1 mde-a and pass through the 4th, 1st and 2nd sb11 of the 3rd diamond shape. Tip of the artist: Always use a new thread when the working thread shows signs of abrasion.

10

10 Cut 3 m (3.3 yards) of Hana beading thread. Attach 1 stop bead in the middle of the thread. Pass through the mde-a, 2 sb11, clasp loop, 2 sb11 and 1 mde-a on a narrow edge. * Pick up 1 fp and pass through the next mde-a on the 1st longitudinal side. Repeat from * until you have reached the other end, keeping the thread tension somewhat loose so that the work piece is not clinched. Swap the needle to the tail, remove the stop bead before. Embellish the opposite longitudinal side in the same manner with fp. Keep the thread tension evenly loose as for the 1st longitudinal side! Tie the threads into a double knot, secure the thread ends.

14 Continue according to step 12 and step 13 (1st blue thread path on the inside) all around correspondingly. Skip 2 mde-b for 1 tip (= a total of 4 tips up and down) and skip 1 mde-b for 1 corner (= a total of 4 side corners). Between them insert 1 tt into each gap. The diagram shows 1 half of the work piece (the other one lies behind it). In the following 4th row (1st green thread path) make sure to not twist the 1st round. Work with evenly tight thread tension. As shown in the diagram insert 1 tt before and after the mde-b of each corner. At each tip pass through the 1st mde-b, pick up 2 tt and pass through the 2nd mde-b. 5th row (1st red thread path): At each corner insert 2 tt, at each tip insert 2 mde-b, between them insert 1 tt into each gap. Remove the stop bead and secure the tail. According to diagram make 9 more rows, with the last round insert 1 fp at each corner. Secure the thread and trim.

15

15 Cut 45 cm (18˝) of Hana beading thread and thread a needle. Attach 1 stop bead leaving a 10 cm (4˝) tail. Make sure that the work piece is aligned exactly as shown in the diagram, a short, closed tip pointing upward. Pass through the gap between the 2nd and 3rd mde-b at a corner (do not pass through a bead!). (*) Pick up 1 rb-c, 1 cp and 1 rb-c and pass through the gap between the 2nd and 3rd mde-b on the opposite corner. Tighten the thread, the 2 corners will move towards each other (green arrows).

11 Pendant: Cut 1.5 m (60˝) of K.O. beading thread and thread a needle. Attach 1 stop bead leaving a 25 cm (10˝) tail. Pick up 1 mde-b, 15 tt, 2 mde-b, 15 tt, 1 mde-b, 11 tt, 2 mde-b, 11 tt, 1 mde-b, 15 tt, 2 mde-b, 15 tt, 1 mde-b, 11 tt, 2 mde-b and 11 tt. Leave some slack between the stop bead and the 1st picked up mde-b. Move the working thread around the piece of thread between the stop bead and the 1st mde-b once and pass back through 7 of the tt picked up last. Moderately tighten the thread in a way that no gaps are visible between the beads. If necessary, you can adjust the thread tension of the base circle in the 2nd round in this manner.

12

12 Twice pick up 1 tt and pass through the tt after the next (peyote). Skip 2 mde-b and pass through the following tt (= 1st tip).

13 96 13 Five times pick up 1 tt and pass through the tt after the next. Skip 1 mde-b and pass through the following tt (= 1st corner).

18 Pendant loop: Cut 50 cm (20˝) of K.O. beading thread and thread a needle. Attach 1 stop bead leaving a 15 cm (6˝) tail. Pass up through 1 tt above the cp Pick up 2 tt and pass back through the adjacent tt (herringbone). Pick up 1 sb15 and pass through the tt picked up second. Tighten the thread.

19

19 Pick up 2 tt and pass back through the adjacent tt (herringbone). Pick up 1 sb15 and pass back through the tt picked up second.

20

20 Continue in herringbone until you have added 30 herringbone pairs of 2 tt each. ‡ Perlen Poesie ‡ 35 ‡ 2018 ‡

21 21 Bend the herringbone strand towards both other tt above the cp. Pass down through 1 tt, pass back through the adjacent tt above the cp and the overlying tt of the strand. Pick up 1 sb15 and pass through the tt above the cp passed through last. To reinforce turn through 1 adjacent tt and pass through all overlying tt of the herringbone strand, turn through the tt above the cp and pass back through the overlying tt on the 2nd edge. Remove the stop bead. Secure the thread and trim. k

16 Turn the work piece by 90 degrees, the long, closed tip pointing down. Pick up 1 rb-c, 1 fp, 1 cp, 1 fp and 1 rb-c and pass through the gap between the 2nd and 3rd mde-b on the opposite corner. Turn the work piece by 90 degrees. Repeat step 15 from (*). Turn the work piece by 90 degrees. Pick up 1 rb-c, 1 fp, 1 cp, 1 fp and 1 rb-c and pass through the gap between the 2nd and 3rd mde-b on the opposite corner. Retrace the thread path all around. Remove the stop bead from the tail. Pull the threads tight and tie them together in a double knot, secure the thread ends. Cut 1 m (40˝) of Hana beading thread and thread a needle. Attach a stop bead leaving a 15 cm (6˝) tail. Pass through 1 tt on an edge close to the lower long tip. Pick up 1 sb15 and pass through the following tt. Repeat until you have reached the point. At the tip, insert 1 sb15, then insert 1 sb15 into each gap along the following edge in the same manner. At the corner, insert 1 sb15 each before and after the fp. Note: Keep the thread tension evenly tight so that the peyote element slightly curves. Insert 1 mde-a into each of the 2 gaps before the short upper tip. Exit at the tip, pick up 1 cp and 2 tt, pass back through the cp and the 1st tt on the next edge. Pass through the mde-a added last on the previous edge. Pass through the following tt on the 2nd edge. Pass through the next mde-a on the previous edge. Insert 1 sb15 into each of the following gaps, before and after the fp, insert 1 sb15, continue to insert sb15 until you have reached the lower edge, at the lower tip pass through the existing sb15 at the 1st lower tip. Work up along the next edge in the same manner. At the upper tip pass through the existing cp, pick up 2 tt and pass back through the cp (= a total of 4 tt above the cp). Also embellish the next edge with sb15. Remove the stop bead from the tail, tie the threads together in a double knot, leave the longer thread end hanging, secure the shorter end. Shape the pendulum by gently pushing the tt on the inside edge of the long tip outward with your fingers.

16 Add on The designer put a tiny glass bottle, which she embellished with beads, in the lower compartment. It could contain a keepsake or the like. You can download a free tutorial for this bottle from her website.
