Author's Preface:

Although Master Tung's Acupuncture has been in th e publ ic domain since his u ntimely passing in 1975, very little information is available publicly on how to use the system in a practical and systematic way in Engl ish . I n these lecture notes, I hope to guide my fel low col leagues into the intricacies of applying Master Tung Acupuncture in the clinic.

Since I am also a practicing martial artist and

deal with internal medicine problems, sports inj u ries, pain management, and worker's cam p injuries quite frequently, I wrote these lecture notes based on my cl in ical experience based on the protocols that I use daily.

Each of these

protocols has been personally used by me one time or another in the clinic.

Since I am a visual person, and I like th ings in a sim ple manner, I have placed the pictures of the points indicated for the various ailments together, to make it as simple as possible for the practicing acupuncturist to use i n h is or her cl inic. I dislike overly drawn out discussions on theory, but prefer that application be one's g u ide. I also dislike secrecy, so I hold back no "alleged" secrets from anyone who wants to learn the real art. My goal is to help end suffering in the world and hel p English speaking acupuncturists improve their proficiency th rough th e veh icle of Master Tung's Acupuncture .

Many get overwhelmed when they refer to other m edia on Master Tung's Acupuncture . The ex isting n umbering system is poor and nonsensical , the names of the points are all i n Ch inese, and the English translations of the names are poorly selected, and even worse , point locations are off. Some have deliberately tried to differentiate Master Tung's Acupuncture and regular acupuncture by stating th at it is " non-channel acupuncture"- nothing could be furth er from the truth!

Also, l ittle is done to approach the body of work on Master Tung's Acupuncture in a practical manner, and for one to use clinically on a daily basis. It is hoped that the reader can use these few points here and ach ieve amazing results in his or her practice , as these are the same points I use in my ow n practice daily w ith amazing results! I n th is book, I use a lot of standard acupuncture points along with Master Tung's acupuncture and emphasize the use of channels and imaging for optimal clin ical use. If a practitioner can use this work, they can have a turnkey approach in the cl inic, simply by implementing these acupuncture and herbal protocols.

In future revisions of this work, I will f u rther explain the use of the points and thei r appl ication in more difficult diseases. It is hoped that reader's questions and interest will lead to new revisions of these lecture notes.

I would like to thank my teacher, Dr. Young Wei-ch ieh , for instructing me in this method th at h e learned from Master Tung Ch ing-chang , and I would l i ke to acknow ledge Esther S u , a renowned master of Tung's Acupuncture, for her generous help.

I would also like to thank my students Jack Chang, Kari

Purhonen, Robert Ting , Dave McKinnon and Theodore Zombolas for their wonderful photography and artw ork! Special thanks to Jack Chang, L.Ac . , Dipl. Acu ( ITARA) for his assistance in MS Word .

Putting it all together

I n the practice of Acupuncture, clinical efficacy is the real goal. Application is the guide , and function rules over form . We do not rely on empirical knowledge exclusively. We are a flex ible, dynamic system that unites the best of all acupuncture systems and are not bound by any particular method . We also do not have a specific preference of a particular method of acupunctu re , as there will be many teachers who can ex plain their method and it can fit into at least one of the pillars that we teach.

The following lists the methods of applying the Master Tung Acupuncture system in clin ical practice.

1 . Select the channel(s) that is/are affected . 2. Select any acupoints on that/those channel(s) that pertain to the disease. We apply the most appropriate Acupuncture point selection strategies according to ski ll in means.

For example, if the patient was diagnosed with a L ung Excess condition, select the Lung (or related C hannel),· and sedate it. We can also choose the Acupoints that may sedate Metal .

3. Select any secondary channels and treat the channels accordingly to the secondary disease. 4. Retain the needles for 28.8 minutes. 5. Remove the needles, and check with the patient regarding their signs and symptoms.

I n general, an acute condition may take only a few visits to resolve completely. A chronic disease will certainly take longer. I n general, painful conditions should be seen at least 3 times a week, sometimes everyday, if indicated. A ch ronic disease should be seen at least twice a week for a treatment course of 1 0 -12 sessions, then tapered down to once a week, then once every 2 weeks, finally ending with a follow up visit once a month until completely resolved. I believe it every medicine has it's proper dosage and that in general, Acupuncturists do not see their patients often enough. The proper dosage of acupuncture is at least 1 treatment every 72 hours.

H e rpes S i m plex G enitalia Signs and Sym ptoms: G e n ital herpes is a sexually transm itted d isease (STD) caused by the herpes s i m plex vi ruses type 1 ( H SV- 1 ) or type 2 ( H SV-2 ) . Most gen ital herpes is caused by H SV-2 . M ost individ uals have no or o n ly m i n i mal signs or sym ptoms from H SV- 1 or HSV-2 infection . When signs do occ u r, they typica l ly appear as one or m o re blisters on o r a round the genitals or rect u m . The blisters break, leaving tender u lcers (sores) that may take two to fou r weeks to heal the first time they occu r. Typically, anothe r outbreak can appear weeks or months after the first, but it almost always is less severe and shorter than the fi rst outbreak. Although the i nfection can stay in the body indefinite ly, the n u m be r of outbreaks tends to decrease ove r a period of years . Most people infected with H SV-2 are not awa re of their i nfectio n . Howeve r, i f sig ns and sym ptoms occur d u ring the f irst outbreak, they can be q u ite pronounced . The first outbreak usually occ u rs within two weeks afte r the virus is transmitted , and the sores typically heal within two to fou r wee ks . Othe r signs and sym ptoms d u ri n g the primary episode m ay incl ude a second crop of sores, and fl u-like symptoms, including fever and swo lle n glands. However, most individuals with HSV-2 infection neve r have sores, or they have ve ry m i l d signs that they do not even notice o r that they m istake for insect bites or anothe r skin cond itio n . People diagnosed with a fi rst episode of g e n ital he rpes can expect to have seve ral (typica l ly fou r or five) outbreaks (sym ptomatic recu rrences) within a year. Ove r tim e these recu rrences usually decrease in freq uency . It is poss ible that a pe rson becomes aware of the 11fi rst episode I I yea rs afte r the i nfection is acq u i re d . Coronary Artery D isease Signs and Sympto ms : Coronary artery d isease (CAD) , also cal led coronary heart d isease , is a con d ition in which plaque (plak) bui lds up i nside the coronary a rte ries . These a rte ries supply you r heart m uscle with oxyge n - rich blood . Plaq u e is made u p of fat, choleste rol , calc i u m , and oth e r su bstances found in the blood . When p laq u e b u i lds up in the arteries, the condition is cal led ath e roscl e rosis. Plaq ue narrows the arteries and red uces blood flow to you r heart m uscl e . It also m akes it m o re l i ke ly that blood clots w i l l form i n you r a rte ries. Blood clots can partia l ly o r com plete ly block blood flow. When you r coronary arteries are na rrowed or blocked, oxyge n- rich blood can't reach you r heart m uscle. This can cause angina or a heart attack. Ove r time, CAD can weake n the heart m uscle and lead to heart fai l u re and arrhythmias. Heart fai l u re is a condition in which you r heart can 't p u m p enough blood throughout you r body. Arrhyt h m ias are p roblems with the speed or rhythm of you r heartbeat.
