Skin Symptoms ‐ TCM Sources: Maciocia, Giovanni. The Foundations of Chinese Medicine. http://tcm.health‐info.org/Acupunture/treatment/shingles.htm Shingles ‐ Brief Summary: Shingles is caused by the varicella‐zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. After an attack of chickenpox, the virus lies dormant in the nerve tissue. Early signs of shingles include burning or shooting pain and tingling or itching generally located on one side of the body or face. The rash or blisters are present anywhere from one to 14 days. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) usually attributes shingles to a combination of excess and deficiency in the body. Therefore, shingles usually affects older patients whose constitutional energy is deficient or younger patients who are suffering from exhaustion. The more pronounced the weakness of the patient, the more likelihood of complications and the more prolonged the course of the disease is likely to be. 1. Patterns of Disharmony: Stagnated Heat in the Liver meridian a. Clinical Manifestations: bright red lesions with distended pain b. Treatment Strategy: expel Wind/Heat, purge Liver and Gallbladder c. Treatment Plan: Shaoyang, Jueyin, HTJ (at corresponding nerves areas), TW5, LR2, 3, 8, GB43, SP10, puncture around affected area every 2 cun, ‐ irritable‐ HT7, PC4 ‐ constipation‐ TW6 ‐ face/neck eruptions‐ LI4, GB20 2. Patterns of Disharmony: Damp/Heat in Spleen meridian a. Treatment Strategy: purge Heat, detoxify, eliminate Damp b. Treatment Plan: SP6, 9, 10, ST44 ‐ Heat‐ LI 11, Du 14 ‐ poor appetite‐ Ren 12, ST 25 3. Patterns of Disharmony: Chronic (Blood Stasis) a. Clinical Manifestations: after eruptions are gone although pain still resides b. Treatment Plan: ashi points, corresponding meridians (i.e. hypochondria region‐ Shaoyang points), back Shu, cupping, moxa Alternative Treatment Methods 1. Auricular Points ‐ Shenmen, subcortex, LU, LR, GB, ST 2. 7 star‐ around local, HTJ, strong stimulation, bleed slightly 2 times per day 3. Electrical Stimulation‐ 2 pairs of needles surrounding the affected area, stimulate around area not across, medium strength
