DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT

The project is a three storey apartment and is a regular structure. The total area of the aprtment is 150 m2 with di 15 m x 10 m. The covering of the structure is a roof deck which can also serve as multipurpose hall. The height of each le and is 0.4 m from the natural grade line. Reinforced concrete is the main material used for the construction of the buil perspective view of the apartment is shown below.

The purpose of this project is to make a structural analysis of the structure created. The main target of the pro determine the end member moments and shears, and the reactions at the fixed supports of the structure.. To analyze the group utilized the moment distribution method (MDM) applying the superposition (substitute) method.

DEFINITION OF THE METHOD UTILIZED

The method used for the analysis of the whole structure from start to finish is the Moment Distribution Method (M method was developed by Hardy Cross on 1939. This method of analyzing beams and frames is a method of s approximation that may be carried out to any desired degree of accuracy. Essentially, the method begins by assuming ea structure is fixed. Then, by unlocking and locking each joint in succession, the internal moments at the points are ‘distrib balanced until the joints have rotated to their final or nearly final positions (R. C. Hibbeler).

However, analyzing a mutistorey structure subjected to boht gravity and lateral loads is more compicated. In line the superposition method was used in order to analyze the whole structure. The first part was preventing the sidesway in by putting imaginary rolers in the floor levels. Initial member end moments M O that develop in this frame due to the exte are computed by the moment-distribution process, and the restraining forces (Rs) at the imaginary supports are eva applying the equations of equilibrium. In the second part of the analysis, the each floor of the frame is allowed to disp known amount ∆' while the sidesway of the upper floors is prevented. The fixed-end moments caused by this displace computed and distributed to obtain the member end moments M Q. With the member end moments known, the forces (Q locations of the roller supports are determined from the equilibrium equations. The member end moments M in the actual determined by superposition of the moments computed in the three parts as there will be coefficeints whose values are ob solving the equations of superposition of horizontal forces at the locations of the imaginary supports.

To have a better understanding of the process, figures are presented in the next sections of the project, a procedural and clear solutions aided with flowcharts.

DEFINITION OF THE TERMS USED IN THE PROJECT 1. FIXED END MOMENT (FEM) This refers to a moment at the “wall” or fixed joint of a member.

2. STIFFNESS FACTOR (k)

It is the ratio of the flexural rigidity of a member to its length. It is also the amount of moment (M) required the end of a beam by 1 rad. If several members are fixed connected to a joint, and each of their far end then by the principle of superposition, the total stiffness factor at the joint is the sum of the member stiffne of the members.

3. DISTRIBUTION FACTOR (DF) If a moment M is applied to a fixed connected joint, the connecting members will each supply a porti resisting moment necessary to satisfy moment equilibrium at the joint. The fraction of the total resisting supplied by the member is called distribution factor. It is equal to the stiffness of the member all over the s stiffness of all members acting on the joint.

STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS PROCESS

DETERMINATION OF LOADS

All the loads involved in the project are computed. Gravity lo such as dead load and live load are determined. Lateral loads suc wind load and earthquake load are calculated. NSCP 2010 wa utilized in this part of the project.

Gravity loads are then distributed uniformly to each beam in a particular frame considering all frames in the structure. Lateral lo are distributed to each level of the structure and are concentrated particular exterior joint in the level.

Restraining supports are placed in the right side of the fram (considering the lateral loads in the left side) to prevent sidesw These restraining supports have reactions equal to the lateral loa the corresponding level. Initial moments (MO) will be obtained in part.

ANALYSIS OF RESTRAINING REACTIONS

After setting up the equation (to be presented in the next sectio the values of restrarining reactions with each level released (reac on restraining supports due to Q1, Q2, and Q3) are obtained us the moment distribution method.

CALCULATION OF COEFFICIENTS

Having an initial value of the restraining support, and values o superposition reactions when each level is released, the coefficie now can be calculated. There will be 3 coefficients since there a storeys, and will be solved through 3 equations and 3 unknown

Using the coefficients, initial values of forces, and forces resulte releasing each restraining support, the actual value of any force i structure such as moments, shears, reactions, deflections, and la storey displacements can be obtained.
