FOREWORD When I startedto teach at the Juilliard School ol Music back in 1936, I instilledinto pupilsthe necessityand value of havingset routines.I have incorporatedmany orchestral excerptsinto these routineswhich I think are essentialto the student'sprogressand ultimatemasteryof the instrument.lf the studentcan playtheseroutinesin all 12 keys he will not havetoo much difficultyin the modernorchestra.A passagethat is very difficultin one key can be madeeasyit the playerchangestrumpetsand playsin anotherkey. Most successfulpeformershave set routines. In order to reach your ultimategoal of perfection, you must concentrateon the requirementsof a technique. Remember: Repetitionis the motherof perfection. I have heard it said that Lists could play his piano music in any key. I believethis becauseall great artistshavethis ability. This is the ajm of theseroutines:the masteryof keysand the facilityol technique. yearsin the New York Philharmonic I think that one of the reasonsI lastedthirty-eight is that I used the trumpetand mostcomlortablekeyfor eachcomposition. The three great trumpetanists who influencedmy careerwere: Gustav Heim, George Mager and Max Schlossberg, Heim told me I coulduse a Bb trumpeton the Brahms 2nd Symphonyand sufferor play it on a D trumpetand enjoyit. Max Schlossberg,my teacherfor lour years at the Juilliard School (lnstitute of Musical art then) was an ardent advocateof key transposition. He wouldgive us an orchestralpassageand makeus play it in all the keys.I have thankedhis memorymanytimessince. Don'ttry to mastereach in routinein a shortamountof time. I sincerelywish that this first book of routineswill establishgoodhabitsin the studentand add pleasureto the work neededto aquirea placein a most:difficult profession.
