Poṭ ṭṭ ṭhpaādasuṭṭa 1. Poṭ ṭṭ ṭhpāda a paribbājakavaṭṭhu Evaṃṭ ṃe suṭaṃṭ— ekaṃṭ saṃayaṃṭ bhagavā sāvaṭṭhiyaṃṭ viharaṭi jeṭavane anāṭhapin ṭd kṭi assa ārāṃe. Tena kho pana saṃayena poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapādo paribbājako saṃayappavādake ṭindukācīre ekasālake ṃallikāya ārāṃe paṭ ṭivasaṭi ṃahaṭiyā paribbājakaparisāya saddhiṃṭ ṭiṃṭsaṃaṭṭehi paribbājakasaṭehi. Aṭha kho bhagavā pubban ṭhasaṃayaṃṭ nivāseṭvā paṭṭacīvaraṃādāya sāvaṭṭhiṃṭ pin ṭd ṭāya pāvisi. Aṭha kho bhagavaṭo eṭadahosi: “aṭippago kho ṭāva sāvaṭṭhiyaṃṭ pin ṭd ṭāya cariṭuṃṭ. Yannūnāhaṃṭ yena saṃayappavādako ṭindukācīro ekasālako ṃallikāya ārāṃo, yena poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapādo paribbājako ṭenu pasaṅkaṃeyyan”ṭi. Aṭha kho bhagavā yena saṃayappavādako ṭindukācīro ekasālako ṃallikāya ārāṃo ṭenupasaṅkaṃi. Tena kho pana saṃayena poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapādo paribbājako ṃahaṭiyā parib bājakaparisāya saddhiṃṭ nisinno hoṭi unnādiniyā uccāsaddaṃahāsaddāya anekavihiṭaṃṭ ṭiracchānakaṭhaṃṭ kaṭhenṭiyā. Seyyaṭhidaṃṭ—rājakaṭhaṃṭ corakaṭhaṃṭ ṃahāṃaṭṭakaṭhaṃṭ senākaṭhaṃṭ bhayakaṭhaṃṭ yuddhakaṭhaṃṭ annakaṭhaṃṭ pānakaṭhaṃṭ vaṭṭhakaṭhaṃṭ sayanakaṭhaṃṭ ṃālākaṭhaṃṭ gandhakaṭhaṃṭ ñāṭikaṭhaṃṭ yānakaṭhaṃṭ gāṃakaṭhaṃṭ nigaṃakaṭhaṃṭ nagarakaṭhaṃṭ janapadakaṭhaṃṭ iṭṭhikaṭhaṃṭ sūrakaṭhaṃṭ visikhākaṭhaṃṭ kuṃbhaṭṭṭ ṭhānakaṭhaṃṭ pubbapeṭakaṭhaṃṭ nānaṭṭakaṭhaṃṭ lokakkhāyikaṃṭ saṃuddakkhāyikaṃṭ iṭibhavābhavakaṭhaṃṭ iṭi vā. Addasā kho poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapādo paribbājako bhagavanṭaṃṭ dūraṭova āgacchanṭaṃṭ; disvāna sakaṃṭ parisaṃṭ san ṭṭ ṭhapesi: “appasaddā bhonṭo honṭu, ṃā bhonṭo saddaṃakaṭṭha. Ayaṃṭ saṃan ṭo goṭaṃo āgacchaṭi. Appasaddakāṃo kho so āyasṃā appasaddassa van ṭn ṭavādī. Appeva nāṃa appasaddaṃṭ parisaṃṭ vidiṭvā upasaṅkaṃiṭabbaṃṭ ṃaññeyyā”ṭi. Evaṃṭ vuṭṭe, ṭe paribbājakā ṭun ṭhī ahesuṃṭ. Aṭha kho bhagavā yena poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapādo paribbājako ṭenupasaṅkaṃi. Aṭha kho poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapādo paribbājako bhagavanṭaṃṭ eṭadavoca: “eṭu kho, bhanṭe, bhagavā. Svāgaṭaṃṭ, bhanṭe, bhagavaṭo. Cirassaṃṭ kho, bhanṭe, bhagavā iṃaṃṭ pariyāyaṃakāsi, yadidaṃṭ idhāgaṃanāya. Nisīdaṭu, bhanṭe, bhagavā, idaṃṭ āsanaṃṭ paññaṭṭan”ṭi. Nisīdi bhagavā paññaṭṭe āsane. Poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapādopi kho paribbājako aññaṭaraṃṭ nīcaṃṭ āsanaṃṭ gaheṭvā ekaṃanṭaṃṭ nisīdi. Ekaṃanṭaṃṭ nisinnaṃṭ kho poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapādaṃṭ paribbājakaṃṭ bhagavā eṭadavoca: “kāya nuṭṭha, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, eṭarahi kaṭhāya sannisinnā, kā ca pana vo anṭarākaṭhā vippakaṭā”ṭi? 1.1. Abhisaññānirodhakaṭhā Evaṃṭ vuṭṭe, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapādo paribbājako bhagavanṭaṃṭ eṭadavoca: “ṭiṭ ṭṭ ṭhaṭesā, bhanṭe, kaṭhā, yāya ṃayaṃṭ eṭarahi kaṭhāya sannisinnā. Nesā, bhanṭe, kaṭhā bhagavaṭo dullabhā bhavissaṭi pacchāpi savanāya. Puriṃāni, bhanṭe, divasāni puriṃaṭarāni, nānāṭiṭṭhiyānaṃṭ saṃan ṭabrāhṃan ṭānaṃṭ koṭūhalasālāya sannisinnānaṃṭ sannipaṭiṭānaṃṭ abhisaññānirodhe kaṭhā udapādi: ‘kaṭhaṃṭ nu kho, bho, abhisaññānirodho hoṭī’ṭi? Taṭrekacce evaṃāhaṃṭsu: ‘aheṭū appaccayā purisassa saññā uppajjanṭipi nirujjhanṭipi. Yasṃiṃṭ saṃaye uppajjanṭi, saññī ṭasṃiṃṭ saṃaye hoṭi. Yasṃiṃṭ saṃaye nirujjhanṭi, asaññī ṭasṃiṃṭ saṃaye hoṭī’ṭi. Iṭṭheke abhisaññānirodhaṃṭ paññapenṭi. (1) Taṃañño evaṃāha: ‘na kho pana ṃeṭaṃṭ, bho, evaṃṭ bhavissaṭi. Saññā hi, bho, purisassa aṭṭā. Sā ca kho upeṭipi apeṭipi. Yasṃiṃṭ saṃaye upeṭi, saññī ṭasṃiṃṭ saṃaye hoṭi. Yasṃiṃṭ saṃaye apeṭi, asaññī ṭasṃiṃṭ saṃaye hoṭī’ṭi. Iṭṭheke abhisaññānirodhaṃṭ paññapenṭi. (2) Taṃañño evaṃāha: ‘na kho pana ṃeṭaṃṭ, bho, evaṃṭ bhavissaṭi. Sanṭi hi, bho, saṃan ṭabrāhṃan ṭā ṃahiddhikā ṃahānubhāvā. Te iṃassa purisassa saññaṃṭ upakad ṭd ṭhanṭipi apakad ṭd ṭhanṭipi. (3) Taṃañño evaṃāha: ‘na kho pana ṃeṭaṃṭ, bho, evaṃṭ bhavissaṭi. Sanṭi hi, bho, devaṭā ṃahiddhikā ṃahānubhāvā. Tā iṃassa purisassa saññaṃṭ upakad ṭd ṭhanṭipi apakad ṭd ṭhanṭipi. Yasṃiṃṭ saṃaye upakad ṭd ṭhanṭi, saññī ṭasṃiṃṭ saṃaye hoṭi. Yasṃiṃṭ saṃaye apakad ṭd ṭhanṭi, asaññī ṭasṃiṃṭ saṃaye hoṭī’ṭi. Iṭṭheke abhisaññānirodhaṃṭ paññapenṭi. (4) Tassa ṃayhaṃṭ, bhanṭe, bhagavanṭaṃṭyeva ārabbha saṭi udapādi: ‘aho nūna bhagavā, aho nūna sugaṭo, yo iṃesaṃṭ dhaṃṃānaṃṭ sukusalo’ṭi. Bhagavā, bhanṭe, kusalo, bhagavā pakaṭaññū abhisaññānirodhassa. Kaṭhaṃṭ nu kho, bhanṭe, abhisaññānirodho hoṭī”ṭi? 1.2. Saheṭukasaññuppādanirodhakaṭhā

“Taṭra, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, ye ṭe saṃan ṭabrāhṃan ṭā evaṃāhaṃṭsu: ‘aheṭū appaccayā purisassa saññā uppajjanṭipi nirujjhanṭipī’ṭi, ādiṭova ṭesaṃṭ aparaddhaṃṭ. Taṃṭ kissa heṭu? Saheṭū hi, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, sappaccayā purisassa saññā uppajjanṭipi nirujjhanṭipi. Sikkhā ekā saññā uppajjaṭi, sikkhā ekā saññā nirujjhaṭi. Kā ca sikkhā”ṭi? Bhagavā avoca. “Idha, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, ṭaṭhāgaṭo loke uppajjaṭi arahaṃṭ, saṃṃāsaṃbuddho… pe … Evaṃṭ kho, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, bhikkhu sīlasaṃpanno hoṭi … pe … ṭassiṃe pañcanīvaran ṭe pahīne aṭṭani saṃanupassaṭo pāṃojjaṃṭ jāyaṭi, paṃudiṭassa pīṭi jāyaṭi, pīṭiṃanassa kāyo passaṃbhaṭi, passaddhakāyo sukhaṃṭ vedeṭi, sukhino ciṭṭaṃṭ saṃādhiyaṭi. So vivicceva kāṃehi, vivicca akusalehi dhaṃṃehi, saviṭakkaṃṭ savicāraṃṭ vivekajaṃṭ pīṭisukhaṃṭ paṭ ṭhaṃaṃṭ jhānaṃṭ upasaṃpajja viharaṭi. Tassa yā puriṃā kāṃasaññā, sā nirujjhaṭi. Vivekajapīṭisukhasukhuṃasaccasaññā ṭasṃiṃṭ saṃaye hoṭi, vivekajapīṭisukhasukhuṃasaccasaññīyeva ṭasṃiṃṭ saṃaye hoṭi. Evaṃpi sikkhā ekā saññā uppajjaṭi, sikkhā ekā saññā nirujjhaṭi. Ayaṃṭ sikkhā”ṭi bhagavā avoca. “Puna caparaṃṭ, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, bhikkhu viṭak kavicārānaṃṭ vūpasaṃā ajjhaṭṭaṃṭ saṃpasādanaṃṭ ceṭaso ekodibhāvaṃṭ aviṭakkaṃṭ avicāraṃṭ saṃādhijaṃṭ pīṭisukhaṃṭ duṭiyaṃṭ jhānaṃṭ upasaṃpajja viharaṭi. Tassa yā puriṃā vivekajapīṭisukhasukhuṃasaccasaññā, sā nirujjhaṭi. Saṃādhijapīṭisukhasukhuṃasaccasaññā ṭasṃiṃṭ saṃaye hoṭi, saṃādhijapīṭisukhasukhuṃasaccasaññīyeva ṭasṃiṃṭ saṃaye hoṭi. Evaṃpi sikkhā ekā saññā uppajjaṭi, sikkhā ekā saññā nirujjhaṭi. Ayaṃpi sikkhā”ṭi bhagavā avoca. “Puna caparaṃṭ, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, bhikkhu pīṭiyā ca virāgā upekkhako ca viharaṭi saṭo ca saṃpajāno, sukhañca kāyena paṭ ṭisaṃṭvedeṭi, yaṃṭ ṭaṃṭ ariyā ācikkhanṭi: ‘upekkhako saṭiṃā sukhavihārī’ṭi, ṭaṭiyaṃṭ jhānaṃṭ upasaṃpajja viharaṭi. Tassa yā puriṃā saṃādhijapīṭisukhasukhuṃasaccasaññā, sā nirujjhaṭi. Upekkhāsukhasukhuṃasaccasaññā ṭasṃiṃṭ saṃaye hoṭi, upekkhāsukhasukhuṃasaccasaññīyeva ṭasṃiṃṭ saṃaye hoṭi. Evaṃpi sikkhā ekā saññā uppajjaṭi, sikkhā ekā saññā nirujjhaṭi. Ayaṃpi sikkhā”ṭi bhagavā avoca. “Puna caparaṃṭ, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, bhikkhu sukhassa ca pahānā dukkhassa ca pahānā pubbeva soṃanassadoṃanassānaṃṭ aṭṭhaṅgaṃā adukkhaṃasukhaṃṭ upekkhāsaṭipārisuddhiṃṭ caṭuṭṭhaṃṭ jhānaṃṭ upasaṃpajja viharaṭi. Tassa yā puriṃā upekkhāsukhasukhuṃasaccasaññā, sā nirujjhaṭi. Adukkhaṃasukhasukhuṃasaccasaññā ṭasṃiṃṭ saṃaye hoṭi, adukkhaṃasukhasukhuṃasaccasaññīyeva ṭasṃiṃṭ saṃaye hoṭi. Evaṃpi sikkhā ekā saññā uppajjaṭi, sikkhā ekā saññā nirujjhaṭi. Ayaṃpi sikkhā”ṭi bhagavā avoca. “Puna caparaṃṭ, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, bhikkhu sabbaso rūpasaññānaṃṭ saṃaṭikkaṃā paṭghasaññānaṃṭ aṭṭhaṅgaṃā nānaṭṭasaññānaṃṭ ṭi aṃanasikārā ‘ananṭo ākāso’ṭi ākāsānañcāyaṭanaṃṭ upasaṃpajja viharaṭi. Tassa yā puriṃā rūpasaññā, sā nirujjhaṭi. Ākāsānañcāyaṭanasukhuṃasaccasaññā ṭasṃiṃṭ saṃaye hoṭi, ākāsānañcāyaṭanasukhuṃasaccasaññīyeva ṭasṃiṃṭ saṃaye hoṭi. Evaṃpi sikkhā ekā saññā uppajjaṭi, sikkhā ekā saññā nirujjhaṭi. Ayaṃpi sikkhā”ṭi bhagavā avoca. “Puna caparaṃṭ, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, bhikkhu sabbaso ākāsānañcāyaṭanaṃṭ saṃaṭikkaṃṃa ‘ananṭaṃṭ viññān ṭan’ṭi viññān ṭañcāyaṭanaṃṭ upasaṃpajja viharaṭi. Tassa yā puriṃā ākāsānañcāyaṭanasukhuṃasaccasaññā, sā nirujjhaṭi. Viññān ṭañcāyaṭanasukhuṃasaccasaññā ṭasṃiṃṭ saṃaye hoṭi, viññān ṭañcāyaṭanasukhuṃasaccasaññīyeva ṭasṃiṃṭ saṃaye hoṭi. Evaṃpi sikkhā ekā saññā uppajjaṭi, sikkhā ekā saññā nirujjhaṭi. Ayaṃpi sikkhā”ṭi bhagavā avoca. “Puna caparaṃṭ, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, bhikkhu sabbaso viñ ñān ṭañcāyaṭanaṃṭ saṃaṭikkaṃṃa ‘naṭṭhi kiñcī’ṭi ākiñcaññāyaṭanaṃṭ upasaṃpajja viharaṭi. Tassa yā puriṃā viññān ṭañcāyaṭanasukhuṃasaccasaññā, sā nirujjhaṭi. Ākiñcaññāyaṭanasukhuṃasaccasaññā ṭasṃiṃṭ saṃaye hoṭi, ākiñcaññāyaṭanasukhuṃasaccasaññīyeva ṭasṃiṃṭ saṃaye hoṭi. Evaṃpi sikkhā ekā saññā uppajjaṭi, sikkhā ekā saññā nirujjhaṭi. Ayaṃpi sikkhā”ṭi bhagavā avoca. “Yaṭo kho, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, bhikkhu idha sakasaññī hoṭi, so ṭaṭo aṃuṭra ṭaṭo aṃuṭra anupubbena saññaggaṃṭ phusaṭi. Tassa saññagge ṭ ṭhiṭassa evaṃṭ hoṭi: ‘ceṭayaṃānassa ṃe pāpiyo, aceṭayaṃānassa ṃe seyyo. Ahañceva kho pana ceṭeyyaṃṭ, abhisaṅkhareyyaṃṭ, iṃā ca ṃe saññā nirujjheyyuṃṭ, aññā ca ol ṭārikā saññā uppajjeyyuṃṭ; yannūnāhaṃṭ na ceva ceṭeyyaṃṭ na ca abhisaṅkhareyyan’ṭi. So na ceva ceṭeṭi, na ca abhisaṅkharoṭi. Tassa aceṭayaṭo anabhi saṅkharoṭo ṭā ceva saññā nirujjhanṭi, aññā ca ol ṭārikā saññā na uppajjanṭi. So nirodhaṃṭ phusaṭi. Evaṃṭ kho, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, anu pubbābhisaññānirodhasaṃpajānasaṃāpaṭṭi hoṭi. Taṃṭ kiṃṭ ṃaññasi, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, api nu ṭe iṭo pubbe evarūpā anu pubbābhisaññānirodhasaṃpajānasaṃāpaṭṭi suṭapubbā”ṭi? “No heṭaṃṭ, bhanṭe. Evaṃṭ kho ahaṃṭ, bhanṭe, bhagavaṭo bhāsiṭaṃṭ ājānāṃi: ‘yaṭo kho, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, bhikkhu idha sakasaññī hoṭi, so ṭaṭo aṃuṭra ṭaṭo aṃuṭra anupubbena saññaggaṃṭ phusaṭi, ṭassa saññagge ṭ ṭhiṭassa evaṃṭ hoṭi: “ceṭayaṃānassa ṃe pāpiyo, aceṭayaṃānassa ṃe seyyo. Ahañceva kho pana ceṭeyyaṃṭ abhisaṅkhareyyaṃṭ, iṃā ca ṃe saññā nirujjheyyuṃṭ, aññā ca ol ṭārikā saññā uppajjeyyuṃṭ; yannūnāhaṃṭ na ceva ceṭeyyaṃṭ, na ca abhisaṅkhareyyan”ṭi. So na ceva ceṭeṭi, na cābhisaṅkharoṭi, ṭassa aceṭayaṭo anabhisaṅkharoṭo ṭā ceva saññā nirujjhanṭi, aññā ca ol ṭārikā saññā na uppajjanṭi. So nirodhaṃṭ phusaṭi. Evaṃṭ kho, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, anu pubbābhisaññānirodhasaṃpajānasaṃāpaṭṭi hoṭī’”ṭi. “Evaṃṭ, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapādā”ṭi. “Ekaññeva nu kho, bhanṭe, bhagavā saññaggaṃṭ paññapeṭi, udāhu puṭhūpi saññagge paññapeṭī”ṭi? “Ekaṃpi kho ahaṃṭ, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, saññaggaṃṭ paññapeṃi, puṭhūpi saññagge paññapeṃī”ṭi. “Yaṭhā kaṭhaṃṭ pana, bhanṭe, bhagavā ekaṃpi

saññaggaṃṭ paññapeṭi, puṭhūpi saññagge paññapeṭī”ṭi? “Yaṭhā yaṭhā kho, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, nirodhaṃṭ phusaṭi ṭaṭhā ṭaṭhāhaṃṭ saññaggaṃṭ paññapeṃi. Evaṃṭ kho ahaṃṭ, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, ekaṃpi saññaggaṃṭ paññapeṃi, puṭhūpi saññagge paññapeṃī”ṭi. “Saññā nu kho, bhanṭe, paṭ ṭhaṃaṃṭ uppajjaṭi, pacchā ñān ṭaṃṭ, udāhu ñān ṭaṃṭ paṭ ṭhaṃaṃṭ uppajjaṭi, pacchā saññā, udāhu saññā ca ñān ṭañca apubbaṃṭ acariṃaṃṭ uppajjanṭī”ṭi? “Saññā kho, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, paṭ ṭhaṃaṃṭ uppajjaṭi, pacchā ñān ṭaṃṭ, saññuppādā ca pana ñān ṭuppādo hoṭi. So evaṃṭ pajānāṭi: ‘idappaccayā kira ṃe ñān ṭaṃṭ udapādī’ṭi. Iṃinā kho eṭaṃṭ, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, pariyāyena vediṭabbaṃṭ—yaṭhā saññā paṭ ṭhaṃaṃṭ uppajjaṭi, pacchā ñān ṭaṃṭ, saññuppādā ca pana ñān ṭuppādo hoṭī”ṭi. 1.3. Saññāaṭṭakaṭhā “Saññā nu kho, bhanṭe, purisassa aṭṭā, udāhu aññā saññā añño aṭṭā”ṭi? “Kaṃṭ pana ṭvaṃṭ, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, aṭṭānaṃṭ paccesī”ṭi? “Ol ṭārikaṃṭ kho ahaṃṭ, bhanṭe, aṭṭānaṃṭ pacceṃi rūpiṃṭcāṭuṃahābhūṭikaṃṭ kabal ṭīkārāhārabhakkhan”ṭi. “Ol ṭāriko ca hi ṭe, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, aṭṭā abhavissa rūpīcāṭuṃahābhūṭiko kabal ṭīkārāhārabhakkho. Evaṃṭ sanṭaṃṭ kho ṭe, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, aññāva saññā bhavissaṭi añño aṭṭā. Tadaṃināpeṭaṃṭ, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, pariyāyena vediṭabbaṃṭ yaṭhā aññāva saññā bhavissaṭi añño aṭṭā. Tiṭ ṭṭ ṭhaṭeva sāyaṃṭ, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, ol ṭāriko aṭṭā rūpī cāṭuṃahābhūṭiko kabal ṭīkārāhārabhakkho, aṭha iṃassa purisassa aññā ca saññā uppajjanṭi, aññā ca saññā nirujjhanṭi. Iṃinā kho eṭaṃṭ, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, pariyāyena vediṭabbaṃṭ yaṭhā aññāva saññā bhavissaṭi añño aṭṭā”ṭi. “Manoṃayaṃṭ kho ahaṃṭ, bhanṭe, aṭṭānaṃṭ pacceṃi sabbaṅgapaccaṅgiṃṭ ahīnindriyan”ṭi. “Manoṃayo ca hi ṭe, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, aṭṭā abhavissa sabbaṅgapaccaṅgī ahīnindriyo, evaṃṭ sanṭaṃpi kho ṭe, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, aññāva saññā bhavissaṭi añño aṭṭā. Tadaṃināpeṭaṃṭ, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, pariyāyena vediṭabbaṃṭ yaṭhā aññāva saññā bhavissaṭi añño aṭṭā. Tiṭ ṭṭ ṭhaṭeva sāyaṃṭ, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, ṃanoṃayo aṭṭā sabbaṅ gapaccaṅgī ahīnindriyo, aṭha iṃassa purisassa aññā ca saññā uppajjanṭi, aññā ca saññā nirujjhanṭi. Iṃināpi kho eṭaṃṭ, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, pariyāyena vediṭabbaṃṭ yaṭhā aññāva saññā bhavissaṭi añño aṭṭā”ṭi. “Arūpiṃṭ kho ahaṃṭ, bhanṭe, aṭṭānaṃṭ pacceṃi saññāṃayan”ṭi. “Arūpī ca hi ṭe, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, aṭṭā abhavissa saññāṃayo, evaṃṭ sanṭaṃpi kho ṭe, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, aññāva saññā bhavissaṭi añño aṭṭā. Iṃināpi kho eṭaṃṭ, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, pariyāyena vediṭabbaṃṭ yaṭhā aññāva saññā bhavissaṭi añño aṭṭā”ṭi. “Sakkā paneṭaṃṭ, bhanṭe, ṃayā ñāṭuṃṭ: ‘saññā purisassa aṭṭā’ṭi vā ‘aññāva saññā añño aṭṭā’ṭi vā”ṭi? “Dujjānaṃṭ kho eṭaṃṭ, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, ṭayā aññadiṭ ṭṭ ṭhikena aññakhanṭikena aññarucikena aññaṭrāyogena aññaṭ rācariyakena: ‘saññā purisassa aṭṭā’ṭi vā, ‘aññāva saññā añño aṭṭāṭi’ vā”ṭi. “Saceṭaṃṭ, bhanṭe, ṃayā dujjānaṃṭ aññadiṭ ṭṭ ṭhikena aññakhanṭikena aññarucikenaaññaṭrāyogenaaññaṭrācariyakena: ‘saññā purisassa aṭṭā’ṭi vā, ‘aññāva saññā añño aṭṭā’ṭi vā; kiṃṭ pana, bhanṭe, ‘sassaṭo loko, idaṃeva saccaṃṭ ṃoghaṃaññan’”ṭi? “Abyākaṭaṃṭ kho eṭaṃṭ, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, ṃayā: ‘sassaṭo loko, idaṃeva saccaṃṭ ṃoghaṃaññan’”ṭi. “Kiṃṭ pana, bhanṭe, ‘asassaṭo loko, idaṃeva saccaṃṭ ṃoghaṃaññan’”ṭi? “Eṭaṃpi kho, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, ṃayā abyākaṭaṃṭ: ‘asassaṭo loko, idaṃeva saccaṃṭ ṃoghaṃaññan’”ṭi. “Kiṃṭ pana, bhanṭe, ‘anṭavā loko … pe … ‘ananṭavā loko … ‘ṭaṃṭ jīvaṃṭ ṭaṃṭ sarīraṃṭ … ‘aññaṃṭ jīvaṃṭ aññaṃṭ sarīraṃṭ … ‘hoṭi ṭaṭhāgaṭo paraṃṭ ṃaran ṭā … ‘na hoṭi ṭaṭhāgaṭo paraṃṭ ṃaran ṭā … ‘hoṭi ca na ca hoṭi ṭaṭhāgaṭo paraṃṭ ṃaran ṭā … ‘neva hoṭi na na hoṭi ṭaṭhāgaṭo paraṃṭ ṃaran ṭā, idaṃeva saccaṃṭ ṃoghaṃaññan’”ṭi? “Eṭaṃpi kho, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, ṃayā abyākaṭaṃṭ: ‘neva hoṭi na na hoṭi ṭaṭhāgaṭo paraṃṭ ṃaran ṭā, idaṃeva saccaṃṭ ṃoghaṃaññan’”ṭi. “Kasṃā paneṭaṃṭ, bhanṭe, bhagavaṭā abyākaṭan”ṭi? “Na heṭaṃṭ, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, aṭṭhasaṃṭhiṭaṃṭ na dhaṃṃasaṃṭhiṭaṃṭ nādib rahṃacariyakaṃṭ, na nibbidāya na virāgāya na nirodhāya na upasaṃāya na abhiññāya na saṃbodhāya na nibbānāya saṃṭvaṭṭaṭi, ṭasṃā eṭaṃṭ ṃayā abyākaṭan”ṭi. “Kiṃṭ pana, bhanṭe, bhagavaṭā byākaṭan”ṭi? “Idaṃṭ dukkhanṭi kho, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, ṃayā byākaṭaṃṭ. Ayaṃṭ duk khasaṃudayoṭi kho, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, ṃayā byākaṭaṃṭ. Ayaṃṭ duk khanirodhoṭi kho, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, ṃayā byākaṭaṃṭ. Ayaṃṭ duk khanirodhagāṃinī paṭ ṭipadāṭi kho, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, ṃayā byākaṭan”ṭi. “Kasṃā paneṭaṃṭ, bhanṭe, bhagavaṭā byākaṭan”ṭi? “Eṭañhi, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, aṭṭhasaṃṭhiṭaṃṭ, eṭaṃṭ dhaṃṃasaṃṭhiṭaṃṭ, eṭaṃṭ ādib rahṃacariyakaṃṭ, eṭaṃṭ nibbidāya virāgāya nirodhāya upasaṃāya abhiññāya saṃbodhāya nibbānāya saṃṭvaṭṭaṭi; ṭasṃā eṭaṃṭ ṃayā byākaṭan”ṭi. “Evaṃeṭaṃṭ, bhagavā, evaṃeṭaṃṭ, sugaṭa. Yassadāni, bhanṭe, bhagavā kālaṃṭ ṃaññaṭī”ṭi. Aṭha kho bhagavā uṭ ṭṭ ṭhāyāsanā pakkāṃi.

Aṭha kho ṭe paribbājakā acirapakkanṭassa bhagavaṭo poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapādaṃṭ paribbājakaṃṭ saṃanṭaṭovācāsanniṭodakena sañjhabbhariṃakaṃṭsu: “evaṃeva panāyaṃṭ bhavaṃṭ poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapādo yaññadeva saṃan ṭo goṭaṃo bhāsaṭi, ṭaṃṭ ṭadevassa abbhanuṃodaṭi: ‘evaṃeṭaṃṭ, bhagavā, evaṃeṭaṃṭ, sugaṭā’ṭi. Na kho pana ṃayaṃṭ kiñci saṃan ṭassa goṭaṃassa ekaṃṭsikaṃṭ dhaṃṃaṃṭ desiṭaṃṭ ājānāṃa: ‘sassaṭo loko’ṭi vā, ‘asassaṭo loko’ṭi vā, ‘anṭavā loko’ṭi vā, ‘ananṭavā loko’ṭi vā, ‘ṭaṃṭ jīvaṃṭ ṭaṃṭ sarīran’ṭi vā, ‘aññaṃṭ jīvaṃṭ aññaṃṭ sarīran’ṭi vā, ‘hoṭi ṭaṭhāgaṭo paraṃṭ ṃaran ṭā’ṭi vā, ‘na hoṭi ṭaṭhāgaṭo paraṃṭ ṃaran ṭā’ṭi vā, ‘hoṭi ca na ca hoṭi ṭaṭhāgaṭo paraṃṭ ṃaran ṭā’ṭi vā, ‘neva hoṭi na na hoṭi ṭaṭhāgaṭo paraṃṭ ṃaran ṭā’ṭi vā”ṭi. Evaṃṭ vuṭṭe, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapādo paribbājako ṭe paribbājake eṭadavoca: “ahaṃpi kho, bho, na kiñci saṃan ṭassa goṭaṃassa ekaṃṭsikaṃṭ dhaṃṃaṃṭ desiṭaṃṭ ājānāṃi: ‘sassaṭo loko’ṭi vā, ‘asassaṭo loko’ṭi vā … pe … ‘neva hoṭi na na hoṭi ṭaṭhāgaṭo paraṃṭ ṃaran ṭā’ṭi vā; api ca saṃan ṭo goṭaṃo bhūṭaṃṭ ṭacchaṃṭ ṭaṭhaṃṭ paṭ ṭipadaṃṭ paññapeṭi dhaṃ ṃaṭ ṭṭ ṭhṭaṭaṃṭ i dhaṃṃaniyāṃaṭaṃṭ. Bhūṭaṃṭ kho pana ṭacchaṃṭ ṭaṭhaṃṭ paṭ ṭipadaṃṭ paññapenṭassa dhaṃṃaṭ ṭṭ ṭhṭaṭaṃṭ i dhaṃṃaniyāṃaṭaṃṭ, kaṭhañhi nāṃa ṃādiso viññū saṃan ṭassa goṭaṃassa subhāsiṭaṃṭ subhāsiṭaṭo nābbhanuṃodeyyā”ṭi? 2. Ciṭṭahaṭṭhisāripuṭṭapoṭ ṭṭ hṭ pāda a vaṭṭhu Aṭha kho dvīhaṭīhassa accayena ciṭṭo ca haṭṭhisāripuṭṭo poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapādo ca paribbājako yena bhagavā ṭenupasaṅkaṃiṃṭsu; upasaṅkaṃiṭvā ciṭṭo haṭṭhisāripuṭṭo bhagavanṭaṃṭ abhivādeṭvā ekaṃanṭaṃṭ nisīdi. Poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapādo pana paribbājako bhagavaṭā saddhiṃṭ saṃṃodi. Saṃṃodanīyaṃṭ kaṭhaṃṭ sāran ṭīyaṃṭ vīṭisāreṭvā ekaṃanṭaṃṭ nisīdi. Ekaṃanṭaṃṭ nisinno kho poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapādo paribbājako bhagavanṭaṃṭ eṭadavoca: “ṭadā ṃaṃṭ, bhanṭe, ṭe paribbājakā acirapakkanṭassa bhagavaṭo saṃanṭaṭo vācāsanniṭodakena sañjhabbhariṃakaṃṭsu: ‘evaṃeva panāyaṃṭ bhavaṃṭ poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapādo yaññadeva saṃan ṭo goṭaṃo bhāsaṭi, ṭaṃṭ ṭadevassa abbhanuṃodaṭi: “evaṃeṭaṃṭ, bhagavā, evaṃeṭaṃṭ, sugaṭā”ṭi. Bhūṭaṃṭ kho pana ṭacchaṃṭ ṭaṭhaṃṭ paṭ ṭipadaṃṭ paññapenṭassa dhaṃṃaṭ ṭṭ ṭhṭaṭaṃṭ i dhaṃṃaniyāṃaṭaṃṭ, kaṭhañhi nāṃa ṃādiso viññū saṃan ṭassa goṭaṃassa subhāsiṭaṃṭ subhāsiṭaṭo nābbhanuṃodeyyā’”ṭi? “Sabbeva kho eṭe, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, paribbājakā andhā acakkhukā; ṭvaṃṭyeva nesaṃṭ eko cakkhuṃā. Ekaṃṭsikāpi hi kho, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, ṃayā dhaṃṃā desiṭā paññaṭṭā; anekaṃṭsikāpi hi kho, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, ṃayā dhaṃṃā desiṭā paññaṭṭā. Kaṭaṃe ca ṭe, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, ṃayā anekaṃṭsikā dhaṃṃā desiṭā paññaṭṭā? ‘Sassaṭoloko’ṭi kho, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, ṃayā anekaṃṭsiko dhaṃṃo desiṭo paññaṭṭo; ‘asassaṭo loko’ṭi kho, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, ṃayā anekaṃṭsiko dhaṃṃo desiṭo paññaṭṭo; ‘anṭavāloko’ṭi kho, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda … pe … ‘ananṭavāloko’ṭi kho, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda … ‘ṭaṃṭ jīvaṃṭ ṭaṃṭ sarīran’ṭi kho, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda … ‘aññaṃṭ jīvaṃṭ aññaṃṭ sarīran’ṭi kho, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda … ‘hoṭi ṭaṭhāgaṭo paraṃṭ ṃaran ṭā’ṭi kho, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda … na hoṭi ṭaṭhāgaṭo paraṃṭ ṃaran ṭā’ṭi kho, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda … ‘hoṭi ca na ca hoṭi ṭaṭhāgaṭo paraṃṭ ṃaran ṭā’ṭi kho, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda … ‘neva hoṭi na na hoṭi ṭaṭhāgaṭo paraṃṭ ṃaran ṭā’ṭi kho, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, ṃayā anekaṃṭsiko dhaṃṃo desiṭo paññaṭṭo. Kasṃā ca ṭe, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, ṃayā anekaṃṭsikā dhaṃṃā desiṭā paññaṭṭā? Na heṭe, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, aṭṭhasaṃṭhiṭā na dhaṃṃasaṃṭhiṭā na ādibrahṃacariyakā na nibbidāya na virāgāya na nirodhāya na upasaṃāya na abhiññāya na saṃbodhāya na nibbānāya saṃṭvaṭṭanṭi. Tasṃā ṭe ṃayā anekaṃṭsikā dhaṃṃā desiṭā paññaṭṭā. 2.1. Ekaṃṭsikadhaṃṃā Kaṭaṃe ca ṭe, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, ṃayā ekaṃṭsikā dhaṃṃā desiṭā paññaṭṭā? Idaṃṭ dukkhanṭi kho, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, ṃayā ekaṃṭsiko dhaṃṃo desiṭo paññaṭṭo. Ayaṃṭ dukkhasaṃudayoṭi kho, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, ṃayā ekaṃṭsiko dhaṃṃo desiṭo paññaṭṭo. Ayaṃṭ duk khanirodhoṭi kho, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, ṃayā ekaṃṭsiko dhaṃṃo desiṭo paññaṭṭo. Ayaṃṭ duk khanirodhagāṃinī paṭ ṭipadāṭi kho, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, ṃayā ekaṃṭsiko dhaṃṃo desiṭo paññaṭṭo. Kasṃā ca ṭe, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, ṃayā ekaṃṭsikā dhaṃṃā desiṭā paññaṭṭā? Eṭe hi, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, aṭṭhasaṃṭhiṭā, eṭe dhaṃṃasaṃṭhiṭā, eṭe ādibrahṃacariyakā eṭe nibbidāya virāgāya nirodhāya upasaṃāya abhiññāya saṃbodhāya nibbānāya saṃṭvaṭṭanṭi. Tasṃā ṭe ṃayā ekaṃṭsikā dhaṃṃā desiṭā paññaṭṭā. Sanṭi, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, eke saṃan ṭabrāhṃan ṭā evaṃṭvādino evaṃṭdiṭ ṭṭ ṭhino: ‘ekanṭasukhī aṭṭā hoṭi arogo paraṃṭ ṃaran ṭā’ṭi. Tyāhaṃṭ upasaṅkaṃiṭvā evaṃṭ vadāṃi: ‘saccaṃṭ kira ṭuṃhe āyasṃanṭo evaṃṭvādino evaṃṭdiṭ ṭṭ ṭhino: “ekanṭasukhī aṭṭā hoṭi arogo paraṃṭ ṃaran ṭā”’ṭi? Te ce ṃe evaṃṭ puṭ ṭṭ ṭhā ‘āṃā’ṭi paṭ ṭijānanṭi. Tyāhaṃṭ evaṃṭ vadāṃi: ‘api pana ṭuṃhe āyasṃanṭo ekanṭasukhaṃṭ lokaṃṭ jānaṃṭ passaṃṭ viharaṭhā’ṭi? Iṭi puṭ ṭṭ ṭhā ‘no’ṭi vadanṭi.

Tyāhaṃṭ evaṃṭ vadāṃi: ‘api pana ṭuṃhe āyasṃanṭo ekaṃṭ vā raṭṭiṃṭ ekaṃṭ vā divasaṃṭ upad ṭd ṭhaṃṭ vā raṭṭiṃṭ upad ṭd ṭhaṃṭ vā divasaṃṭ ekanṭasukhiṃṭ aṭṭānaṃṭ sañjānāṭhā’ṭi? Iṭi puṭ ṭṭ ṭhā ‘no’ṭi vadanṭi. Tyāhaṃṭ evaṃṭ vadāṃi: ‘api pana ṭuṃhe āyasṃanṭo jānāṭha: “ayaṃṭ ṃaggo ayaṃṭ paṭ ṭipadā ekanṭasukhassa lokassa sacchikiriyāyā”’ṭi? Iṭi puṭ ṭṭ ṭhā ‘no’ṭi vadanṭi. Tyāhaṃṭ evaṃṭ vadāṃi: ‘api pana ṭuṃhe āyasṃanṭo yā ṭā devaṭā ekanṭasukhaṃṭ lokaṃṭ upapannā, ṭāsaṃṭ bhāsaṃānānaṃṭ saddaṃṭ sun ṭāṭha: “suppaṭ ṭipannāṭṭha, ṃārisā, ujuppaṭ ṭipannāṭṭha, ṃārisā, ekanṭasukhassa lokassa sacchikiriyāya; ṃayaṃpi hi, ṃārisā, evaṃṭpaṭ ṭipannā ekanṭasukhaṃṭ lokaṃṭ upapannā”’ṭi? Iṭi puṭ ṭṭ ṭhā ‘no’ṭi vadanṭi. Taṃṭ kiṃṭ ṃaññasi, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, nanu evaṃṭ sanṭe ṭesaṃṭ saṃan ṭarāhṃan b ṭānaṃṭ appāṭ ṭihīrakaṭaṃṭ bhāsiṭaṃṭ saṃpajjaṭī”ṭi? “Addhā kho, bhanṭe, evaṃṭ sanṭe ṭesaṃṭ saṃan ṭabrāhṃan ṭānaṃṭ appāṭ ṭihīrakaṭaṃṭ bhāsiṭaṃṭ saṃpajjaṭī”ṭi. “Seyyaṭhāpi, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, puriso evaṃṭ vadeyya: ‘ahaṃṭ yā iṃasṃiṃṭ janapade jana padakalyān ṭī, ṭaṃṭ icchāṃi ṭaṃṭ kāṃeṃī’ṭi. Taṃenaṃṭ evaṃṭ vadeyyuṃṭ: ‘aṃbho purisa, yaṃṭ ṭvaṃṭ janapadakalyān ṭiṃṭ icchasi kāṃesi, jānāsi ṭaṃṭ janapadakalyān ṭiṃṭ khaṭṭiyī vā brāhṃan īṭ vā vessī vā suddī vā’ṭi? Iṭi puṭ ṭṭ hṭ o ‘no’ṭi vadeyya. Taṃenaṃṭ evaṃṭ vadeyyuṃṭ: ‘aṃbho purisa, yaṃṭ ṭvaṃṭ janapadakalyān iṭ ṃṭ icchasi kāṃesi, jānāsi ṭaṃṭ janapadakalyān ṭiṃṭ evaṃṭnāṃā evaṅgoṭṭāṭi vā, dīghā vā rassā vā ṃajjhiṃā vā kāl ṭī vā sāṃā vā ṃaṅguracchavī vāṭi, aṃukasṃiṃṭ gāṃe vā nigaṃe vā nagare vā’ṭi? Iṭi puṭ ṭṭ ṭho ‘no’ṭi vadeyya. Taṃenaṃṭ evaṃṭ vadeyyuṃṭ: ‘aṃbho purisa, yaṃṭ ṭvaṃṭ na jānāsi na passasi, ṭaṃṭ ṭvaṃṭ icchasi kāṃesī’ṭi? Iṭi puṭ ṭṭ ṭho ‘āṃā’ṭi vadeyya. Taṃṭ kiṃṭ ṃaññasi, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, nanu evaṃṭ sanṭe ṭassa purisassa appāṭhīrakaṭaṃṭ bhāsiṭaṃṭ saṃpajjaṭī”ṭi? “Addhā kho, ṭi bhanṭe, evaṃṭ sanṭe ṭassa purisassa appāṭ ṭihīrakaṭaṃṭ bhāsiṭaṃṭ saṃpajjaṭī”ṭi. “Evaṃeva kho, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, ye ṭe saṃan ṭabrāhṃan ṭā evaṃṭvādino evaṃṭdiṭ ṭṭ ṭhino: ‘ekanṭasukhī aṭṭā hoṭi arogo paraṃṭ ṃaran ṭā’ṭi. Tyāhaṃṭ upasaṅkaṃiṭvā evaṃṭ vadāṃi: ‘saccaṃṭ kira ṭuṃhe āyasṃanṭo evaṃṭvādino evaṃṭdiṭ ṭṭ ṭhino: “ekanṭasukhī aṭṭā hoṭi arogo paraṃṭ ṃaran ṭā”’ṭi? Te ce ṃe evaṃṭ puṭ ṭṭ ṭhā ‘āṃā’ṭi paṭ ṭijānanṭi. Tyāhaṃṭ evaṃṭ vadāṃi: ‘api pana ṭuṃhe āyasṃanṭo ekanṭasukhaṃṭ lokaṃṭ jānaṃṭ passaṃṭ viharaṭhā’ṭi? Iṭi puṭ ṭṭ ṭhā ‘no’ṭi vadanṭi. Tyāhaṃṭ evaṃṭ vadāṃi: ‘api pana ṭuṃhe āyasṃanṭo ekaṃṭ vā raṭṭiṃṭ ekaṃṭ vā divasaṃṭ upad ṭd ṭhaṃṭ vā raṭṭiṃṭ upad ṭd ṭhaṃṭ vā divasaṃṭ ekanṭasukhiṃṭ aṭṭānaṃṭ sañjānāṭhā’ṭi? Taṃṭ kiṃṭ ṃaññasi, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, nanu evaṃṭ sanṭe ṭesaṃṭ saṃan ṭarāhṃan b ṭānaṃṭ appāṭ ṭihīrakaṭaṃṭ bhāsiṭaṃṭ saṃpajjaṭī”ṭi? “Addhā kho, bhanṭe, evaṃṭ sanṭe ṭesaṃṭ saṃan ṭabrāhṃan ṭānaṃṭ appāṭ ṭihīrakaṭaṃṭ bhāsiṭaṃṭ saṃpajjaṭī”ṭi. “Seyyaṭhāpi, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, puriso cāṭuṃahāpaṭhe nissen ṭiṃṭ kareyya pāsādassa ārohan ṭāya. Taṃenaṃṭ evaṃṭ vadeyyuṃṭ: ‘aṃbho purisa, yassa ṭvaṃṭ pāsādassa ārohan ṭāya nissen ṭiṃṭ karosi, jānāsi ṭaṃṭ pāsādaṃṭ puraṭṭhiṃāya vā disāya dakkhin ṭāya vā disāya pacchiṃāya vā disāya uṭṭarāya vā disāya ucco vā nīco vā ṃajjhiṃo vā’ṭi? Iṭi puṭ ṭṭ ṭho ‘no’ṭi vadeyya. Taṃenaṃṭ evaṃṭ vadeyyuṃṭ: ‘aṃbho purisa, yaṃṭ ṭvaṃṭ na jānāsi na passasi, ṭassa ṭvaṃṭ pāsādassa ārohan ṭāya nissen ṭiṃṭ karosī’ṭi? Iṭi puṭ ṭṭ ṭho ‘āṃā’ṭi vadeyya. Tyāhaṃṭ evaṃṭ vadāṃi: ‘api pana ṭuṃhe āyasṃanṭo yā ṭā devaṭā ekanṭasukhaṃṭ lokaṃṭ upapannā ṭāsaṃṭ devaṭānaṃṭ bhāsaṃānānaṃṭ saddaṃṭ sun ṭāṭha: “suppaṭ ṭipannāṭṭha, ṃārisā, ujuppaṭ ṭipannāṭṭha, ṃārisā, ekanṭasukhassa lokassa sacchikiriyāya; ṃayaṃpi hi, ṃārisā, evaṃṭ paṭ ṭipannā ekanṭasukhaṃṭ lokaṃṭ upapannā”’ṭi? Iṭi puṭ ṭṭ ṭhā ‘no’ṭi vadanṭi. Tayoaṭṭapaṭ ṭilābha “Tayo kho ṃe, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābhā—ol ṭāriko aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho, ṃanoṃayo aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho, arūpo aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho. Kaṭaṃo ca, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, ol ṭāriko aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho? Rūpī cāṭuṃahābhūṭikokabal ṭīkārāhārabhakkho, ayaṃṭ ol ṭāriko aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho. Kaṭaṃo ṃanoṃayo aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho? Rūpī ṃanoṃayo sabbaṅgapaccaṅgī ahīnindriyo, ayaṃṭ ṃanoṃayo aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho. Kaṭaṃo arūpo aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho? Arūpī saññāṃayo, ayaṃṭ arūpo aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho. Ol ṭārikassapi kho ahaṃṭ, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, aṭṭapaṭ lābhassa pahānāya dhaṃṃaṃṭ deseṃi: ‘yaṭhāpaṭ ṭipannānaṃṭ vo saṅkilesikā ṭi dhaṃṃā pahīyissanṭi, vodāniyā dhaṃṃā abhivad ṭd ṭhissanṭi, paññāpāripūriṃṭ vepullaṭṭañca diṭ ṭṭ ṭheva dhaṃṃe sayaṃṭ abhiññā sacchikaṭvā upasaṃpajja viharissaṭhā’ṭi. Siyā kho pana ṭe, poṭ ṭṭ hṭ apāda, evaṃassa: ‘saṅkilesikā dhaṃṃā pahīyissanṭi, vodāniyā dhaṃṃā abhivad ṭd ṭhissanṭi, paññāpāripūriṃṭ vepullaṭṭañca diṭ ṭṭ ṭheva dhaṃṃe sayaṃṭ abhiññā sacchikaṭvā upasaṃpajja viharissaṭi, dukkho ca kho vihāro’ṭi. Na kho paneṭaṃṭ, poṭ ṭṭ hṭ apāda, evaṃṭ daṭ ṭṭ ṭhabbaṃṭ. Saṅkilesikā ceva dhaṃṃā pahīyissanṭi, vodāniyā ca dhaṃṃā abhivad ṭd ṭhissanṭi, paññāpāripūriṃṭ vepullaṭṭañca diṭ ṭṭ ṭheva dhaṃṃe sayaṃṭ abhiññā sacchikaṭvā upasaṃpajja viharissaṭi, pāṃujjañceva bhavissaṭi pīṭi ca passaddhi ca saṭi ca saṃpajaññañca sukho ca vihāro. Manoṃayassapi kho ahaṃṭ, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, aṭṭapaṭlābhassa pahānāya dhaṃṃaṃṭ deseṃi: ‘yaṭhāpaṭ ṭipannānaṃṭ vo saṅkilesikā ṭi dhaṃṃā pahīyissanṭi, vodāniyā dhaṃṃā abhivad ṭd ṭhissanṭi, paññāpāripūriṃṭ vepullaṭṭañca diṭ ṭṭ ṭheva dhaṃṃe sayaṃṭ abhiññā sacchikaṭvā upasaṃpajja viharissaṭhā’ṭi. Pare ce, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, aṃhe evaṃṭ puccheyyuṃṭ: ‘kaṭaṃo pana so, āvuso, ṃanoṃayo aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho, yassa ṭuṃhe pahānāya dhaṃṃaṃṭ deseṭha, yaṭhāpaṭ ṭipannānaṃṭ vo saṅkilesikā dhaṃṃā pahīyissanṭi, vodāniyā dhaṃṃā abhivaddṭ ṭhissanṭi, paññāpāripūriṃṭ vepullaṭṭañca diṭ ṭṭ ṭheva dhaṃṃe sayaṃṭ abhiññā sacchikaṭvā upasaṃpajja viharissaṭhā’ṭi? Tesaṃṭ ṃayaṃṭ evaṃṭ puṭ ṭṭ ṭhā evaṃṭ byākareyyāṃa: ‘ayaṃṭ vā so, āvuso, ṃanoṃayo aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho yassa ṃayaṃṭ pahānāya dhaṃṃaṃṭ deseṃa, yaṭhāpaṭ ṭipannānaṃṭ vo saṅkilesikā dhaṃṃā pahīyissanṭi, vodāniyā dhaṃṃā abhivaddṭ ṭhissanṭi, paññāpāripūriṃṭ vepullaṭṭañca diṭ ṭṭ ṭheva dhaṃṃe sayaṃṭ abhiññā sacchikaṭvā upasaṃpajja viharissaṭhā’ṭi. Pare ce, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapāda, aṃhe evaṃṭ puccheyyuṃṭ: ‘kaṭaṃo pana so, āvuso, arūpo aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho, yassa ṭuṃhe pahānāya dhaṃṃaṃṭ deseṭha, yaṭhāpaṭ ṭipannānaṃṭ vo saṅkilesikā dhaṃṃā pahīyissanṭi, vodāniyā dhaṃṃā abhivaddṭ ṭhissanṭi, paññāpāripūriṃṭ vepullaṭṭañca diṭ ṭṭ ṭheva dhaṃṃe sayaṃṭ abhiññā sacchikaṭvā upasaṃpajja viharissaṭhā’ṭi? Taṃenaṃṭ evaṃṭ vadeyyuṃṭ: ‘aṃbho purisa, yassa ṭvaṃṭ pāsādassa ārohan āṭ ya nissen ṭiṃṭ karosi, jānāsi ṭaṃṭ pāsādaṃṭ, puraṭṭhiṃāya vā disāya dakkhin ṭāya vā disāya pacchiṃāya vā disāya uṭṭarāya vā disāya ucco vā nīco vā ṃajjhiṃo vā’ṭi? So evaṃṭ vadeyya: ‘ayaṃṭ vā so, āvuso, pāsādo, yassāhaṃṭ ārohan ṭāya nissen ṭiṃṭ karoṃi, ṭasseva pāsādassa heṭ ṭṭ ṭhā’ṭi. Evaṃṭ vuṭṭe, ciṭṭo haṭṭhisāripuṭṭo bhagavanṭaṃṭ eṭadavoca: “yasṃiṃṭ, bhanṭe, saṃaye ol ṭāriko aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho hoṭi, ṃoghassa ṭasṃiṃṭ saṃaye ṃanoṃayo aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho hoṭi, ṃogho arūpo aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho hoṭi; ol ṭāriko vāssa aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho ṭasṃiṃṭ saṃaye sacco hoṭi. Yasṃiṃṭ, bhanṭe, saṃaye ṃanoṃayo aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho hoṭi, ṃoghassa ṭasṃiṃṭ saṃaye ol ṭāriko aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho hoṭi, ṃogho arūpo aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho hoṭi; ṃanoṃayo vāssa aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho ṭasṃiṃṭ saṃaye sacco hoṭi. Yasṃiṃṭ, bhanṭe, saṃaye arūpo aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho hoṭi, ṃoghassa ṭasṃiṃṭ saṃaye ol ṭāriko aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho hoṭi, ṃogho ṃanoṃayo aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho hoṭi; arūpo vāssa aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho ṭasṃiṃṭ saṃaye sacco hoṭī”ṭi. “Yasṃiṃṭ, ciṭṭa, saṃaye ol ṭāriko aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho hoṭi, neva ṭasṃiṃṭ saṃaye ṃanoṃayo aṭṭapaṭlābhoṭi saṅkhaṃṭ gacchaṭi, na ṭi arūpo aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābhoṭi saṅkhaṃṭ gacchaṭi; ol ṭāriko aṭṭapaṭ lābhoṭveva ṭasṃiṃṭ saṃaye saṅkhaṃṭ gacchaṭi. Yasṃiṃṭ, ciṭṭa, saṃaye ṭi ṃanoṃayo aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho hoṭi, neva ṭasṃiṃṭ saṃaye ol ṭāriko aṭṭapaṭlābhoṭi saṅkhaṃṭ gacchaṭi, na arūpo aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābhoṭi ṭi saṅkhaṃṭ gacchaṭi; ṃanoṃayo aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābhoṭveva ṭasṃiṃṭ saṃaye saṅkhaṃṭ gacchaṭi. Sace ṭaṃṭ, ciṭṭa, evaṃṭ puccheyyuṃṭ: ‘ahosi ṭvaṃṭ aṭīṭaṃaddhānaṃṭ, na ṭvaṃṭ nāhosi; bhavissasi ṭvaṃṭ anāgaṭaṃaddhānaṃṭ, na ṭvaṃṭ na bhavissasi; aṭṭhi ṭvaṃṭ eṭarahi, na ṭvaṃṭ naṭṭhī’ṭi. Evaṃṭ puṭ ṭṭ ṭho ṭvaṃṭ, ciṭṭa, kinṭi byākareyyāsī”ṭi? “Sace ṃaṃṭ, bhanṭe, evaṃṭ puccheyyuṃṭ: ‘ahosi ṭvaṃṭ aṭīṭaṃaddhānaṃṭ, na ṭvaṃṭ na ahosi; bhavissasi ṭvaṃṭ anāgaṭaṃaddhānaṃṭ, na ṭvaṃṭ na bhavissasi; aṭṭhi ṭvaṃṭ eṭarahi, na ṭvaṃṭ naṭṭhī’ṭi. Evaṃṭ puṭ ṭṭ ṭho ahaṃṭ, bhanṭe, evaṃṭ byākareyyaṃṭ: ‘ahosāhaṃṭ aṭīṭaṃaddhānaṃṭ, nāhaṃṭ na ahosiṃṭ; bhavissāṃahaṃṭ anāgaṭaṃaddhānaṃṭ, nāhaṃṭ na bhavissāṃi; aṭṭhāhaṃṭ eṭarahi, nāhaṃṭ naṭṭhī’ṭi. Evaṃṭ puṭ ṭṭ ṭho ahaṃṭ, bhanṭe, evaṃṭ byākareyyan”ṭi. “Sace pana ṭaṃṭ, ciṭṭa, evaṃṭ puccheyyuṃṭ: ‘yo ṭe ahosi aṭīṭo aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho,sova ṭe aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho sacco, ṃogho anāgaṭo, ṃogho paccuppanno? Yo ṭe bhavissaṭi anāgaṭo aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho, sova ṭe aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho sacco, ṃogho aṭīṭo, ṃogho paccuppanno? Yo ṭe eṭarahi paccuppanno aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho,sova ṭe aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho sacco, ṃogho aṭīṭo, ṃogho anāgaṭo’ṭi. Evaṃṭ puṭ ṭṭ ṭho ahaṃṭ, bhanṭe, evaṃṭ byākareyyaṃṭ: ‘yo ṃe ahosi aṭīṭo aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho, sova ṃe aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho ṭasṃiṃṭ saṃaye sacco ahosi, ṃogho anāgaṭo, ṃogho paccuppanno. Yo ṃe bhavissaṭi anāgaṭo aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho, sova ṃe aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho ṭasṃiṃṭ saṃaye sacco bhavissaṭi, ṃogho aṭīṭo, ṃogho paccuppanno. Yo ṃe eṭarahi paccuppanno aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho, sova ṃe aṭṭapaṭ ṭilābho sacco, ṃogho aṭīṭo, ṃogho anāgaṭo’ṭi. Evaṃṭ puṭ ṭṭ ṭho ahaṃṭ, bhanṭe, evaṃṭ byākareyyan”ṭi.

Seyyaṭhāpi, ciṭṭa, gavā khīraṃṭ, khīraṃhā dadhi, dadhiṃhā navanīṭaṃṭ, navanīṭaṃhā sappi, sappiṃhā sappiṃan ṭd ṭo. Yasṃiṃṭ saṃaye khīraṃṭ hoṭi, neva ṭasṃiṃṭ saṃaye dadhīṭi saṅkhaṃṭ gacchaṭi, na navanīṭanṭi saṅkhaṃṭ gacchaṭi, na sappīṭi saṅkhaṃṭ gacchaṭi, na sappiṃan ṭd ṭoṭi saṅkhaṃṭ gacchaṭi; khīranṭveva ṭasṃiṃṭ saṃaye saṅkhaṃṭ gacchaṭi. Yasṃiṃṭ saṃaye dadhi hoṭi … pe … navanīṭaṃṭ hoṭi … sappi hoṭi … sappiṃan ṭd ṭo hoṭi, neva ṭasṃiṃṭ saṃaye khīranṭi saṅkhaṃṭ gacchaṭi, na dadhīṭi saṅkhaṃṭ gacchaṭi, na navanīṭanṭi saṅkhaṃṭ gacchaṭi, na sappīṭi saṅkhaṃṭ gacchaṭi; sappiṃan ṭd ṭovṭ eva ṭasṃiṃṭ saṃaye saṅkhaṃṭ gacchaṭi. Iṃā kho, ciṭṭa, lokasaṃaññā lokaniruṭṭiyo lokavohārā lokapaññaṭṭiyo, yāhi ṭaṭhāgaṭo voharaṭi aparāṃasan”ṭi. Evaṃṭ vuṭṭe, poṭ ṭṭ ṭhapādo paribbājako bhagavanṭaṃṭ eṭadavoca: “abhikkanṭaṃṭ, bhanṭe, abhikkanṭaṃṭ, bhanṭe. Seyyaṭhāpi, bhanṭe, nikkujjiṭaṃṭ vā ukkujjeyya, paṭ ṭicchannaṃṭ vā vivareyya, ṃūl ṭhassa vā ṃaggaṃṭ ācikkheyya, andhakāre vā ṭelapajjoṭaṃṭ dhāreyya: ‘cakkhuṃanṭo rūpāni dakkhanṭī’ṭi; evaṃevaṃṭ bhagavaṭā anekapariyāyena dhaṃṃo pakāsiṭo. Esāhaṃṭ, bhanṭe, bhagavanṭaṃṭ saran ṭaṃṭ gacchāṃi dhaṃṃañca bhikkhusaṅghañca. Upāsakaṃṭ ṃaṃṭ bhagavā dhāreṭu ajjaṭagge pān ṭupeṭaṃṭ saran ṭaṃṭ gaṭan”ṭi. 2.3. Ciṭṭahaṭṭhisāripuṭṭaupasaṃpadā Ciṭṭo pana haṭṭhisāripuṭṭo bhagavanṭaṃṭ eṭadavoca: “abhikkanṭaṃṭ, bhanṭe, abhikkanṭaṃṭ, bhanṭe. Seyyaṭhāpi, bhanṭe, nikkujjiṭaṃṭ vā ukkujjeyya, paṭ ṭicchannaṃṭ vā vivareyya, ṃūl ṭhassa vā ṃaggaṃṭ ācikkheyya, andhakāre vā ṭelapajjoṭaṃṭ dhāreyya: ‘cakkhuṃanṭo rūpāni dakkhanṭī’ṭi; evaṃevaṃṭ bhagavaṭā anekapariyāyena dhaṃṃo pakāsiṭo. Alaṭṭha kho ciṭṭo haṭṭhisāripuṭṭo bhagavaṭo sanṭike pabbajjaṃṭ, alaṭṭha upasaṃpadaṃṭ. Acirūpasaṃpanno kho panāyasṃā ciṭṭo haṭṭhisāripuṭṭo eko vūpakaṭ ṭṭ ṭho appaṃaṭṭo āṭāpī pahiṭaṭṭo viharanṭo na cirasseva—yassaṭṭhāya kulapuṭṭā saṃṃadeva agārasṃā anagāriyaṃṭ pabbajanṭi, ṭadanuṭṭaraṃṭ—brahṃacariyapariyosānaṃṭ diṭ ṭṭ ṭheva dhaṃṃe sayaṃṭ abhiññā sacchikaṭvā upasaṃpajja vihāsi. “Khīn ṭā jāṭi, vusiṭaṃṭ brahṃacariyaṃṭ, kaṭaṃṭ karan ṭīyaṃṭ, nāparaṃṭ iṭṭhaṭṭāyā”ṭi—abbhaññāsi.
