The ink shall be thoroughly agitated. A 100 ml sample shall be transferred to a Pear-shaped centrifuge tube. The sample shall be allowed to settle under gravity only for approximately 60 minutes with petroleum distillate suspensions or 30 minutes with water-based suspensions before reading. The batch shall be considered acceptable when the solid’s concentration is within 1.2% - 2.4% by volume. b)
Break Test Prior to the initial usage of each new batch of water based mixed ink from bulk, a break test to check for adequate wetting properties shall be carried out as follow: Prepare a test piece having the finish surface similar to subject to be tested and apply a thin layer of contrast paint. Apply sample of the newly mixed ink to the surface of the test piece. The ink should flow evenly over the surface. If the ink collects in globules on the surface, then it shall be rejected. Particle concentration check and break test shall be repeated on a daily basis and the result recorded on the Magnetic Ink Test Log (see Exhibit 2)
7.2
Application of detecting medium The magnetic inks shall be applied by spraying over the test surface
7.3
Method of removing excess particle The excess particles shall be removed from the test surface by means of an air blower with active magnetic current.
8.
CONTRAST LACQUER In order to improve contrast, a thin layer of a proprietary brand of rapid drying high opacity white contrast, nonmagnetic lacquer shall be applied. The lacquer must adhere firmly to the test surface and not be soluble in the detection medium.
9.
SURFACE PREPARATION The surface to be tested and all adjacent areas within at least 1 inch (25 mm) which are subjects to magnetic particle testing shall be clean and free from paint, oil grease,

heavy scale or corrosion deposits and any other extraneous matter which could interfere with the test. In most cases adequate surface cleaning will be achieved by means of a wire brush. Surfaces may also be prepared by solvent cleaning, grit blasting or a combination of these methods. Welds will normally be tested in the as welded condition however where there is reasonable cause to suspect the presence of defects it may be necessary to prepare the surface by grinding. After cleaning, a thin layer of white contrast lacquer shall be applied. The maximum temperature shall be less than 52oC. 10.
LIGHTING A minimum white light intensity of 1076 lux (100 fc) at the test surface is required during the examination and evaluation of indications. The light intensity, natural or supplemental white light source (such as LED or fluorescent bulb), shall be measured with a white light meter prior to the evaluation of indications or a verified light source shall be used. Verification of light sources is required to be demonstrated only one time, documented, and maintained on file. Light meters shall be calibrated at least once a year or whenever the light meter has been repaired. If meters have not been in use for one year or more, calibration shall be done before being used.
11.
MAGNETIZING FIELD ADEQUACY Pie Field Indicator
The indicator, shown in Figure 1 shall be positioned on the surface to be examined, such that the copper-plated side is away from the inspected surface. A suitable field strength is indicated when a clearly defined line (or lines) of magnetic particles form(s) across the copper face of the indicator when the magnetic particles are applied simultaneously with the magnetizing force. When a clearly defined line of particles is not formed, the magnetizing technique shall be changed as needed.

Figure 1: Pie-Shaped Magnetic Particle Field Indicator
The direction of magnetization shall be determined by particle indications obtained using an indicator as shown in Fig. 1. When a clearly defined line of particles is not formed in the desired direction, the magnetizing technique shall be changed as needed. Magnetic flux indicators
Place the flux indicator in intimate contact with the material to be examined, the strip may be held in place manually or with the use of an adhesive tape.
Hold or attach the strip tightly to the surface with the lines on the strip parallel to the field.
Indicators provide the strongest indications when positioned so that the long side of the indicator is perpendicular to the applied magnetic field.

Gently apply the suspension and then energize.
Weld defined 3 lines will indicate a strong field and adequacy is present
PROCEDURE OF INSPECTION
All tested areas shall be magnetized in a minimum of two mutually perpendicular directions. See technique sheets for detail (Appendix 1).
Examination area shall be covered weld, heat affected zone (HAZ) plus at least 25mm each side.
All tested areas shall be examined at least twice. For the second test the magnetic field shall be orientated perpendicular to the first test. The magnetized area shall be considered to be not larger than a circle described through the contact points with a poles spacing of maximum 200 mm
Inspection shall commence immediately the detecting medium has been applied and shall continue during and for a short time after the application of the magnetic field
The magnetic field shall be removed after the termination of MPI ink application.
INTERPRETATION OF INDICATIONS
All valid indications formed by magnetic examination are the results of magnetic leakage fields. Indication may be relevant, non-relevant or false.
Relevant indications are produced by leakage fields which are result of discontinuities. Relevant indications require evaluation with regard to the acceptance standards as specified in Para. 17 of this procedure.
Non-relevant indications can occur singly or in patterns as a result of leakage fields created by conditions that require no evaluation such as changes in section (like keyways and drilled holes), inherent material properties (like the edge of a bimetallic weld), magnetic writing, etc.
False indications are not the result of magnetic forces. Examples are particles held mechanically or by gravity in shallow depression or particles held by rust or scale on the surface.
Board areas of particle accumulation, which might mask indications from discontinuities, are prohibited, such areas shall be cleaned and re-examined.

An indication of an imperfection may be larger than the imperfection that causes it. However, the size of the indication is the basis for acceptance evaluation.
Any questionable or doubtful indications shall be reexamined to determine whether or not they are relevant.
DEMAGNETIZATION
When residual magnetism in the part could interfere with subsequent processing or usage, the part shall be demagnetized any time after completion of the examination.
Alternating - Current (AC) yokes shall be used for localized demagnetization by placing the poles on the surface moving them around the area, and slowly withdrawing the AC yokes while it is still energized.
Care should be exercised to ensure that the part is entirely removed from the influenced of the AC yokes before the demagnetizing force is discontinued.
POST INSPECTION CLEANING
Post cleaning is necessary where magnetic particle materials could interfere with subsequent processing or with service requirements. Post cleaning techniques shall be as follows:
Removal of wet particle by flushing with solvent.
Any other techniques which may be used if they do not interfere with subsequent requirements.
ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA
Acceptance criteria for structural welds shall be in accordance with Table 10.1 of SD-NOC-STR-301 below: Table 10.1 - Standards of Acceptance for Weld Defects in Structural Steels
