Description and Operation NOTE:

CAUTION:

The Cockpit System Controllers, P/N AR4709-1/-3/-5/-7/-11/-101/-103/-201/-203/-301/ -303, are not field repairable items for safety reasons. REMOVAL OF FACE PLATE ON AR4709-7/-11/-201/-203/-301/-303 COULD CAUSE DISLODGING OF EMI GASKETS SECURED BETWEEN MOUNTING PLATES AND CONTROLLER BOX. UNSEATING OF GASKETS WILL DEGRADE EMI RESISTANCE.

The Cockpit Door Locking System (CDLS) Controller is an electronic device installed in the aircraft that interfaces with solenoid controlled strike mechanisms on commercial aircraft. It allows the flight crew control of the door lock system and responds automatically to decompression events by releasing the door strike to prevent structural damage to the aircraft. It is used in conjunction with the keypad and provides a method for authorized personnel to gain access to the flight deck. The Controller is comprised of a small metallic enclosure containing pressure sensors and electronics. The controller interfaces with a keypad, strikes and with aircraft systems via connectors mounted on the controller enclosure. The CDLS unit is intended to be installed inside the (pressurized) flight deck and/or crew rest areas of various aircraft models. The configuration differences in functionality between AR4709-1 and AR4709-3/-5 are that the AR4709-3/-5 both have a software modification that prevents the fault light and the three solenoid indicator lights from illuminating during an emergency opening sequence. All other aspects of functionality between configurations are identical. The configuration physical difference between AR4709-1 and AR4709-3/-5 is that the AR4709-1 has two filtered connector inserts, and AR4709-3/-5 have no added EMI filters. AR4709-3 has added fault light outputs. The AR4709-5 was created for the lower deck/crew rest area and is the same as the AR4709-3 except for the front plate. Also, AR4709-5 connects to one strike only (the middle strike) so that the upper and lower LEDs (for the top and bottom strikes) of the controller front plate are marked as “INOP.” Finally, the waiting time or time-out after entering the emergency code is set to “0,” so there is no waiting time to open the door.

Page 2 of 11 May 27/10

ADAMS RITE AEROSPACE ABBREVIATED COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL AR4709 NOTE:

AR4709-5 is a part number created due to a specific operator request for purposes outside the cockpit door reinforcement program. AR4709-5 is used for crew rest/crew compartments. Incapacitation code rather than the normal entry code is used for normal rest/crew compartment entry.

Configuration AR4709-7 is identical to AR4709-3 but with added EMI protection and filtered connectors. Configurations AR4709-201 and AR4709-203 are upgraded AR4709-1 and AR4709-3 Cockpit System Controllers, respectively. AR4709-201 and AR4709-203 have a new wire harness that includes EMI filtered A and B connectors (same as AR4709-7). The modified controller will also have electrically bonded faceplates. Configurations AR4709-11, -101, -103, -301, -303, are upgraded AR4709-7, -1, -3, -201, -203, respectively. AR4709-11, -101, -103, -301, -303, have the capability to stop powering individual door strikes at controller level in case of jammed or other fault conditions. AR4709-7, -11, -201, -203, -301, and -303 have EMI gaskets between the housing and mounting plate, as well as the face plate and mounting plate. EMI FILTER

Testing and Fault Isolation (Refer to Figure 1) A.

General To properly test the system, the Controller must be either 1.) connected to a complete system for proper testing, 2.) connected to ARA Programmer/Tester P/N AR4737-1, or 3.) tested on aircraft. The system is shown in Figure 1. The AR4708-1/-5 and AR4708-3/-7 electric strikes can be replaced by AR4714-1 and AR4714-3/-5 for the purpose of testing.

B.

Procedure NOTE:

(1)

(2)

All Cockpit System Controller configurations are connected to three electric strikes (Top, Center, and Bottom Electric Strikes) except for AR4709-5, which connects to one electric strike only (Center Electric Strike). System Power ON (a)

All three solenoids should energize.

(b)

If all three solenoids do NOT energize: Verify power to the Controller.

2

Check connections.

3

If connections are correct, the Controller is defective.

Unlock Feature (a)

(3)

1

Activate Unlock switch/button. 1

While the unlock switch/button is activated, all three pins should deenergize.

2

After releasing the unlock switch/button, all three pins should energize within approximately ½ second.

3

If pins do NOT energize. a

Check connections.

b

If connections are correct, the Controller is defective.

Request Access Feature – Accept (a)

Enter the “normal entry code” on keypad.

(b)

Alarm should sound on aircraft or test fixture TF100. If Alarm does NOT sound: 1

Activate “UNLOCK” switch/button.

2

Repeat step (5) (a).

3

If the Alarm does not sound: a

Check connections.

b

If connections are correct the default “normal entry code” could have been changed.

(c)

(4)

If Alarm does sound, activate the “UNLOCK” switch/button 1

Green LED on keypad should turn “ON.”

2

All three strikes (catch release pins) should de-energize while “unlock” switch/button is activated.

3

All three strikes (catch release pins) should re-energize within approximately ½ second after the “unlock” switch/button is released.

4

If fault lights remain on and/or strikes do not cycle, and then check strikes per CMM 25-20-20 or CMM 25-20-22. If strike is ok, Controller is defective.

Request Access Feature – Deny (a)

Enter the “normal entry code.”

(b)

Alarm should sound on aircraft or test fixture TF100.

(c)

Activate “LOCK” switch/button on aircraft or test fixture TF100.

(d)

1

The Red LED on Keypad should turn ON

2

Enter the “normal entry code” on keypad. The alarm should NOT sound on aircraft or Test Fixture TF100 (the system default “lock time” is 5 minutes.).

3

If the alarm does sound, the Controller is defective.

After the “lock time” duration has expired, enter “normal entry code” on keypad. The alarm should sound in cockpit. 1

(5)

Contact your designated Airline CDLS Coordinator.

If the alarm does not sound, the Controller is defective or needs to be re-programmed.

Incapacitation (used as normal access for AR4709-5) (a)

Enter the “emergency entry code.”

(b)

The green keypad LED should begin to flash. 1

If the green LED does NOT flash, the “emergency entry code” could have been changed.

3

The alarm should sound for 15 to 120 seconds on aircraft or on TF100 (the system default for release is 30 seconds; 0 seconds for AR4709-5).

4

(6)

a

If the alarm does NOT sound, the Controller is defective.

b

If the alarm is less than 15 seconds or greater than 120 seconds, the Controller is defective.

After the emergency delay time has expired, the three strikes should deenergize for approximately 5 seconds. The strikes should then energize.

Decompression (a)

Use ARA Decompression Test Simulator, AR4728-1, to test the decompression feature. Refer to Figure 3. 1

Push plunger into cylinder until it locks into place. CAUTION: DO NOT PUSH NOZZLE INTO OPENING OF COCKPIT CONTROLLER.

2

Hold rubber nozzle up to one opening on Cockpit Controller.

3

As Simulator is held up to opening, press release button on Simulator.

4

All three strikes (release pins) should de-energize for approximately 1 second. All three strikes (release pins) should energize. Cockpit Controller lights should flash on then off.

5

Repeat Steps 1 thru 4 on the other Controller opening.
