Norma Khazaal Assignment 3 MBA-Research and quantitative methods in business Dr. Elena Toros Chapter 4: understanding your research philosophy Case study: chines tourists and their duty free shopping in Guam 1. Francisca's research idea was to set up the attributes of Chinese tourists and how these qualities affect their shopping motivation in duty free stores. She found out that data collection techniques is not beneficial for her since it won't represent the actual behavior of Chinese tourist in Guam. She needed to gather quantitative information so she used questionnaire technique which she could analyses statistically. So this research idea of Francisca can't be intetpretivism. as intetpretivism deals with qualitative data and not quantitative data. 2. Fransisca compared her thoughts which were running in her mind like her own shopping experiences in the duty free shops and what motivated her to shop in those stores. Also her friend gave her some ideas for the motivation of Chinese tourists to shop at duty free stores but these thoughts and ideas seemed to be subjective and does not relate with positivism and she needed to be objective. She noticed that she was interested in behavior not people opinions. So she found a paper related to consumers shopping at airports in which Crawford and Melewar(2003) provided several explanations of buying in airports and on the basis of this she could prepare her questionnaire as this will be of objective and not subjective. And this helped her to solve her dilemma. Another way to Solve it getting data from magazines, articles, books, newspapers related to Chinese and there personal standards.
3. When she collected the data using a questionnaire which is analyzed statistically and so a positivism approach helped her to gather those data on the Chinese tourists and how characteristics affect their duty free shopping process.
