EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear Do you have any idea how serious a matter stress is? According to Morton C. Orman, M.D.*, Author of The 14 Day Stress Cure: “Each year, millions of Americans die of stressrelated illnesses. Heart disease, strokes, and even some forms of cancer may be caused by stress in certain individuals. “If we include the considerable damage done by smoking, overeating, alcohol, and drugs - all commonly used to cope with stress - we can see that we are in the midst of a major epidemic with serious, often fatal, consequences.”

What is stress, anyway? Here’s what stress experts, Steve Burns and Kimberley Burns of TeachHealth.com/index.html have to say about stress: If you are used to thinking that stress is something that makes you worry, you have the wrong idea of stress. Stress is many different kinds of things: happy things, sad things, allergic things, physical things. Many people carry enormous stress loads and they do not even realize it! We are all familiar with the word “stress.” Stress is when you are worried about getting laid off your job, or worried about having enough money to pay your bills, or worried about your mother when the doctor says she may need an operation. In fact, to most of us, stress is synonymous with worry. If it is something that makes you worry, then it is stress. Your body, however, has a much broader definition of stress.

To your body, stress is synonymous with change. * ©1992-2007 M.C.Orman, MD, FLP www.stresscure.com/hrn/five.html © Angela Treat Lyon & Contributing Authors 2007 All rights reserved •

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear

Anything that causes a change in your life causes stress It doesn’t matter if it is a “good” change, or a “bad” change, they are both stress. When you find your dream apartment and get ready to move, that is stress. If you break your leg, that is stress. Good or bad, if it is a change in your life, it is stress as far as your body is concerned. Even imagined change is stress. (Imagining changes is what we call “worrying”.) If you fear that you will not have enough money to pay your rent, that is stress. If you worry that you may get fired, that is stress. If you think that you may receive a promotion at work, that is also stress (even though this would be a good change).

Whether the event is good or bad, imagining changes in your life is stressful. Anything that causes change in your daily routine is stressful. Anything that causes change in your body health is stressful. Imagined changes are just as stressful as real changes. Let us look at several types of stress—ones that are so commonplace that you might not even realize that they are stressful.

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear Emotional Stress When arguments, disagreements, and conflicts cause changes in your personal life—that is stress.

Illness Catching a cold, breaking an arm, a skin infection, a sore back, are all changes in your body condition.

Pushing Your Body Too Hard A major source of stress is overdriving yourself. If you are working (or partying) 16 hours a day, you will have reducedyour available time for rest. Sooner or later, the energy drain on your system will cause the body to fall behind in its repair work. There will not be enough time or energy for the body to fix broken cells, or replace used up brain neurotransmitters. Changes will occur in your body’s internal environment. You will “hit the wall,” “run out of gas.” If you continue, permanent damage may be done. The body’s fight to stay healthy in the face of the increased energy that your are expending is major stress.

Environmental Factors Very hot or very cold climates can be stressful. Very high altitude may be a stress. Toxins or poisons are a stress. Each of these factors threatens to cause changes in your body’s internal environment.

Environmental Toxins The Special Case of Tobacco Use Tobacco is a powerful toxin!! Smoking destroys cells that clean your trachea, bronchi, and lungs. Smoking causes emphysema and chronic bronchitis, which progress to slow suffocation. The carbon monoxide from cigarette smoking causes chronic carbon monoxide poisoning. Tobacco use damages the arteries

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear in your body, causing insufficient blood supply to the brain, heart, and vital organs. Cigarette smoking increases the risk of cancer 50-fold. Chewing tobacco or snuff is no safe haven. It also damages your arteries, and it carries the same cancer risk. (Cancers of the head and neck are particularly vicious, disfiguring, and deadly). Poisoning the body with carbon monoxide, and causing the physical illnesses of emphysema, chronic bronchitis, cancer, and arterial damage, tobacco is a powerful source of added stress to one’s life.

Hormonal Factors Puberty The vast hormonal changes of puberty are severe stressors. A person’s body actually changes shape, sexual organs begin to function, new hormones are released in large quantities. Puberty, as we all know, is very stressful. Pre-menstrual syndrome Once a woman passes puberty, her body is designed to function best in the presence of female hormones. For women who are past puberty, a lack of female hormones is a major stress on the body. Once a month, just prior to menstruation, a woman’s hormone levels drop sharply. In many women, the stress of sharply falling hormones is enough to create a temporary overstress. This temporary overstress is popularly known as Pre Menstrual Syndrome (PMS).

Post-Partum Following a pregnancy, hormone levels change dramatically. After a normal childbirth, or a miscarriage, some women may be thrown into overstress by loss of the hormones of pregnancy.

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear Menopause There is another time in a woman’s life when hormone levels decline. This is the menopause. The decline in hormones during menopause is slow and steady. Nevertheless, this menopausal decline causes enough stress on the body to produce overstress in many women.

Taking Responsibility for Another Person’s Actions When you take responsibility for another person’s actions, changes occur in your life over which you have little or no control. Taking responsibility for another person’s actions is a major stressor.

Allergic Stress Allergic reactions are a part of your body’s natural defense mechanism. When confronted with a substance which your body considers toxic, your body will try to get rid of it, attack it, or somehow neutralize it. If it is something that lands in your nose, you might get a runny, sneezy nose. If it lands on your skin, you might get blistery skin. If you inhale it, you’ll get wheezy lungs. If you eat it, you may break out in itchy red hives all over your body. Allergy is a definite stress, requiring large changes in energy expenditure on the part of your body’s defense system to fight off what the body perceives as a dangerous attack by an outside toxin.

Some common stress symptoms: Brain: Fatigue, aches, pains, crying, depression, panic/anxiety attacks, bad sleep

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear Gastrointestinal Tract: Ulcer, cramps and diarrhea, colitis, irritable bowel. Glandular System: Thyroid gland malfunction. Cardiovascular: High blood pressure, heart attack, abnormal heart beat, stroke. Skin: Itchy skin rashes, breakouts, sensitive to touch, blotches. Immune System: Decreased resistance to infections. We have known for a long time that overstress could cause physical damage to the gastrointestinal tract, glandular system, skin or cardiovascular system. But only recently have we learned that overstress actually causes physical changes in the brain. One of the most exciting medical advances of our decade has been an understanding of how overstress physically affects your brain. We now know that the fatigue, aches and pains, crying spells, depression, anxiety attacks and sleep disturbances of overstress are caused by brain chemical malfunction. (Thanks, Steve & Kim!)

❖❖❖❖❖

Stress = Positive Change, too! We commonly think of stress as anything caused by a “bad” situation or event happening with or to us. But in fact, any change can set off our bodily alarm system—even those things

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear or events we think of as “good:” winning a prize, an award, a raise, a commendation: or completing a major achievement—like publishing a book, finishing a painting, creating a website, birthing a child, seeing your child off to college.

How do you know you are stressed? Seems like a silly question, I know. But if you were to teach me exactly how you feel in your body when you are experiencing stress, what would you say? << Stress feels like this guy, doesn’t it? How he looks is how I feel when I’m worried or afraid. You can feel stress as a knot in your belly, sweaty palms, a headache, or constricted chest. Weak or wobbly knees, a tight throat, a feeling as if the world will end. None of it is fun. But now, using EFT, a simple, easy sytem, it’s possible to not only just relieve stress, but get right to the bottom of the causes of it and eliminate them and the stress. I like to look at the symptoms of stress as red flags that point out where I’m not at peace with myself. If I can’t identify where it shows up, what my symptoms are, I can’t change it. Most of us are so inured to the levels of stress we endure every day that we don’t recognize it when we see/feel it! Here is what EFT Founder, Gary Craig of Emofree.com says:

Any negative emotion is caused by a disruption in the body’s energy system.

Page 12

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear Now that we have seen some of the causes of stress and where it shows up in our bodies, it’s time to think about what our thoughts are about our lives, and the effects our thoughts have on our bodyies’ energy systems. Why? Because EFT posits that it is not necessarily the actual cause of stress that hurts. What hurts is the result of the disrupted energy in our bodies, as well as the results of the thoughts, beliefs and habits we form around the pain we feel because of that disruption. In this simplistic illustration on the on the left is someone who has had a trauma or has stress of some kind that has disrupted his energy system. His energy is now constricted and tangled. The constrictions cause backups of energy, resulting in pain and illness on all levels: physical, mental, and emotional. An example of this would be a migraine headache: you just cannot function when you have one. The disrupted energy in your body makes it impossible to do anything but lie down and wait it out. But as soon as the energy is free-flowing again, you can get up and function as if the migraine had never existed. On the next page top, he has found EFT, a system he can use to relieve his stress! He is tapping on specific points on his body (that are actually Acupuncture points). Instead of a needle, he

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear uses his fingertips. As he taps, he says certain phrases (not affirmations) that help him calm down, address issues he never realized were there, and finally release any anger, hate, resentment, fear and grief that are holding him back. Below to the right, he is done tapping and releasing. He has let go of the disrupted energy from his system, made new choices, even gained new perspectives. He feels a whole lot better. His energy is back, the color in his cheeks and skin is better, he can breathe fully, there’s no more knot in his belly, and his heart feels full and content. His confidence and feelings of self-worth and well-being are increased and expanded. Imagine what your life would be like if you didn’t have to spend so much time and energy as you do now on stress and its side-effects! I suffered from a deep depression for 35 years. The stress and worry absolutely crippled me more days than not. There wasn’t a day that went by that I didn’t have the desire to end it all in some way—the mental and emotional pain was simply too much, and I didn’t know how to make it go away. I just wanted to give up. Fortunately for me, I found EFT, the simple tool with which, in 6 short weeks, I resolved the depression. It hasn’t reared its ugly

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear head now for years. I love the tool so much I teach it to others. Since you’re not here with me, I wanted to make it possible for you to discover, explore and use this marvelous tool, too. That’s why I compiled this book. Once you see how easy it can be to get through what used to be unsurmountable problems at impossible odds, your entire outlook on life will shift. what I realized I had found such an important key, suddenly I had real hope. Not the, “well, OK, I can live with this a little longer” kind of hope, but Real Hope—that has now turned into confidence.

About the chapters It turns out that there were far too many stories to comprise only one book. So—this is Book I, and Book II has 13 other stories. Most of the following chapters have a brief intro by EFT Founder, Gary Craig (many of these articles can be found on his site, Emofree.com). You’ll see how each practitioner has his or her own style—I have used font styles to keep a bit of consistency. I used bold green to emphasize the tapping protocol in each story. In the practice of EFT, there is an amazing phenomenon I want you to know about. Recognition of this phenomenon came about as Gary watched how participants in his workshops tapped on other people’s issues and got results, themsleves—even though they had not been specifically tapping on their own issue. He calls this Borrowing Benefits.

Take full advantage of this aspect of EFT! By the end of reading each article, you just might have more relief from the stresses in your life than you have ever felt before! What will you do with all the energy that has been backed up within you? Do you have a Dream of doing or being something you never thought was possible? I say to you, get going! Because you can do it now!

Major Car Accident EFT student uses tapping to immediately calm down after a major car accident Hi Everyone, Rajan Ramchandani from Singapore taught Tanisia Mooney how to do EFT and, shortly thereafter, Tanisia was involved in a major car accident. In her letter below she describes her panic and emotional difficulties (she was not physically injured) and how she achieved impressive calm with EFT. Hugs, Gary

❖❖❖ Dear Gary, I just received the following story from Tanisia Mooney in her own words.

Warmest regards, Rajan Ramchandani Dear Rajan: I’ve just had the most incredible demonstration with EFT recently. Yesterday I was driving on a 2-lane country road on my way to perform a “Handfasting” (Wedding) ceremony. The celebration was to take place at a private campground, and the entrance way to this campground is unmarked.

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear Though I’ve been to this area many times, it’s still a tricky place to find and turn into because of the marked highway speed. Also, the stretch of highway where this campground is located is designated as a “passing” lane—a driver is allowed to pass on the left of one car in order to get ahead of a slower-moving car. After looking for the landmarks that indicated I was close to the campground, I adjusted my speed and signaled my intent to turn. When I made my turn, several things happened at once. One, I realized that I had turned into the wrong entrance way (I was 1/4 mile short of the campground); two, my car was hit, then spun around, then was hit again head-on. As soon as I registered that I was in “another” accident (I was involved in two minor collisions within the past two years) and that both cars were seriously damaged, I immediately burst into panicked sobs.

I was terrified that the other person was injured (the other driver’s airbags had deployed), and a million dire scenarios ran through my head. It took a couple of minutes for a good samaritan to get me to confirm that I was uninjured and to get me to crawl out of my car. (My driver’s side door was seriously damaged, and I couldn’t get it to open). My friends at the campsite were called, and they came to my rescue while I was still in a full-on panic attack. Emergency personnel came onto the scene, and my friend was trying to get me to calm down enough to give the policeman my driver’s license, car registration, and insurance information.

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear In the middle of all of this chaos, almost by instinct I got myself to begin tapping on “major accident.” (That’s the way it looked in my head.) After a couple of rounds on the [setup technique], I was able to calm down enough to give my statement to the police officer, to make sure the other driver was okay (he was), and to remove my belongings and wedding supplies to my friend’s van. Several minutes after we arrived at the campground, I felt shaken but calm. About 30 minutes after that, as I was telling my friends about the accident I was just involved in, they remarked at how calm I was. Throughout the day, that was the main thing that the other guests (also friends) had said about my experience. I was able to perform the handfasting ceremony beautifully, helped with decorating and guest control, and was able to enjoy myself at the celebration—all this through tapping after surviving a major car accident! Since learning and practicing EFT for only two weeks, I’ve had several emotional energy shifts and healings, but none as dramatic as this. If I haven’t said it before, thank you, thank you, thank you many times for introducing me to EFT! Bright Blessings, Tanisia Mooney

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear Tapping tips from the editor: >> How-to-do EFT is described in Chapter 4 << >> Illustrated tapping points are found in Chapter 5 << Since many people, especially newbies to EFT, ask me what setups to use when they tap, I have gone through this story and noted, right from the writer’s own words, more setups that might be useful for a situation like this. I use a heavy font for emphasis of phrases that seem to have more latent energy. You can see how I used each chance I could to defuse any minute shred of the situation that might stick and cause disruption later on down the line in her life. You can do the same when you tap for your own issues.

I also add a couple of other elements: After tapping the “scary” or otherwise unpleasant or unwanted energy down in intensity, I acknowledge what was done “right” or “good,” and I say, Because I deeply and completely love and accept myself. There’s something really satisfying about saying that that has a completely different feel to it than the usual I love and accept phrase. Then I add new choices to round out that good feeling, and make sure there is a strong “light at the end of the tunnel” that can be the focus, instead of the accident or “bad” thing that just happened or occurred in the past. This way, there is a new reference point for stability, and a foundation upon which to stand for safety and sanity when another upset occurs.

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear I have gone through a couple more chapters and taken apart the story to get setups. By the time you have read through and tapped along, you ought to have a good feel for what’s going on in an EFT session, so I didn’t do every chapter. You’ll develop your own “style,” anyway, once you get going, and won’t need more coaching. I wish you the best, may your tapping always be fruitful, and may you create a life of happiness, satisfaction, joy and fulfillment for yourself and everyone around you. This is surely the way to world peace, wouldn’t you say? Aloha, Angela

Not Good Enough The Brick Wall Technique Hi Everyone, In this well written article, EFT Master Rehana Webster from New Zealand takes us step by step through her process of finding a core issue with a client—very helpful. Then she gives us the details of her very insightful Brick Wall Technique. This allows clients to see the big picture and gives an overall concept to the whole process. Serious EFT students will likely find this idea helpful. Hugs, Gary

❖❖❖ In early January I received a call from Jackie (not her real name) wanting an appointment as soon as possible. She had to be taken to the hospital on New Year’s day suffering from acute chest pains. She said it was an angina attack because of the stress she was under from entertaining her family at their traditional New Year’s gathering. At the beginning of the session I asked Jackie to tell me what had lead up to the angina attack (information gathering). She recounted that the whole family was at her place and she felt under immense stress having to produce a big festive meal. The stress built up as she felt she couldn’t cope and resulted in chest pains. The ambulance whisked her away to hospital. The doctor

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear who examined her said there was nothing the matter with her heart and there was no physical reason for her chest pain. I asked Jackie if there were other times in her life she had felt under stress (getting the client to do a chronological search of events that are related - at this point I introduced the BRICK WALL exercise - see below). Yes, she said that she had felt unduly stressed all her life (generalized state). I asked her if here was any emotional reason for her feeling that way (identify the feelings). “No,” she replied, “I always felt stressed and it is a feeling of not good enough (NGE). So I asked if there were any special circumstances she felt stressed under (looking for triggers, imprints and specific events). “No,” she replied, “I always feel NGE, and this is the prevailing feeling in my relationships, first marriage, second marriage, and third marriage! And with my parents!” (getting closer to the core - going back into childhood events). “What about your parents,” I asked (steering in the direction of an early trauma). That’s when she vehemently spat it out and surprised both of us. “I’ve never felt good enough since I was four years old and I’ll never forgive my parents for that!” (we had the SPECIFIC EVENT). “Do you want to tell me about it Jackie (doing the movie technique), as it seems quite significant? What would you rate it at out of 10?” (get the client to rate the intensity of feelings about the event) “10!” she replied. Jackie said that when she was 4, she fell out of her Grandmother’s apple tree and broke her arm. The hospital was a 2-hour drive away and since her parents didn’t have a car, the

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear neighbors drove them all to the hospital. At the hospital Jackie’s parents told her that they would return in a few hours and take her home with them. Her parents never showed up that day and to add insult to injury, sent another friend to pick her up from the hospital the following day. She had cried when the nurses told her that her parents were not coming to get her that day. Jackie was very upset and angry with her parents for ‘lying’ to her. She never forgave them for it and since then always felt that she was never good enough. She was never good enough because she compared herself to her sister who had a life threatening disease and was hospitalized frequently. Her parents would always stay at the hospital with her sister and never leave her there on her own. From Jackie’s 4year-old perspective she was obviously not good enough if her parents could abandon her at the hospital with her broken arm. Jackie was so surprised at the intensity of her feelings as she remembered this event so vividly. After EFT was applied to that incident, she was amazed at how she now saw the incident with a new perspective and non-judgmental attitude towards her parents, sister and self. The session ended with a round of tapping: “Even though my feelings were bruised and broken, I forgive my parents for not being able to keep their promise and leaving me at the hospital but they were doing the best they could under the circumstances and I didn’t die because of my broken arm!”

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear

Brick Wall Technique I have clients who cannot find specific events to work on. They come in with a generalized feeling and can’t seem to find any connection with actual events. No matter how hard they try, their specific experiences are not available to them or they cannot make the connection between how they feel and early traumatic events. I use this very simple technique which provides a structure for the client to get involved in and follow through. I call it the Brick Wall. Let’s imagine that a client complains of a general state of feeling ‘Not Good Enough’ (NGE). I ask them to imagine their state as if it was a big brick wall. They are invited to view this wall and notice what feelings arise from it. Next I draw a simple illustration of a brick wall. There are a number of rows in the wall, and each row has a number of bricks (like a spreadsheet). I ask them to imagine that some bricks are representations of negative events in their lives that have contributed to their generalized negative state of NGE. The bottom row in the wall is year one of life and the second row is year two and so on. I ask them to label the bricks. The bricks at the bottom of the wall are obviously from earlier in life. Not all the bricks need to be labeled. I also ask the client to notice how some bricks from the lower rows

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear are related to others in higher rows. It may be a chain of events going up the brick wall, starting from core events or early imprints from conditioning and upbringing. What does the client need to knock down this NGE wall? The wall can be high, solid and unmovable. I explain the logic of removing a couple of bricks from the bottom rows thereby weakening the wall considerably. Each brick the client treats with EFT weakens the structure of the mental schema and uncouples learned responses. The client gets to reprogram the brain by changing the biochemistry associated with the learned pattern of NGE. I ask the client to imagine the bricks as events, the wall as the generalized state and EFT as the pneumatic drill, which is going to knock out the bricks, thereby weakening the wall and collapsing it. This is usually done quite effortlessly! By Rehana Webster

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear

Tapping tips from the Editor: >> How-to-do EFT is described in Chapter 4 << >> Illustrated tapping points are found in Chapter 5 <<

Even though: I had to be taken to the hospital New Year’s day I was suffering from acute chest pains it was an angina attack because of the stress I was under I want to deeply and completely love and accept myself.

Even though: the whole family was at our place I felt under immense stress having to produce a big festive meal. The stress built up I am willing to deeply and completely love and accept myself.

Even though: I felt I couldn’t cope it resulted in chest pains the ambulance whisked me away to hospital the doctor who examined me said there was nothing the matter with my heart and there was no physical reason for my chest pain and I felt ____ because of hearing that I think I can deeply and completely love and accept myself.

Even though: I had felt unduly stressed all my life it is a feeling of not good enough this is the prevailing feeling in my relationships, first marriage, second marriage, third marriage and with my parents! I choose to deeply and completely love and accept myself.

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear Even though: I’ve never felt good enough since I was four years old I’ll never forgive my parents for that! I still deeply and completely love and accept myself.

Even though: I fell out of her Grandmother’s apple tree and broke my arm my parents told me that they would return in a few hours and take me home with them. they never showed up that day I still deeply and completely love and accept myself.

Even though: and they sent another friend to pick her up from the hospital the following day I cried when the nurses told me that my parents were not coming to get me that day. I still deeply and completely love and accept myself.

Even though: I was very upset and angry with my parents for ‘lying’ to me I never forgave them for it since then always felt that I was never good enough. I really deeply and completely love and accept myself.

Even though: I never good enough because I compared myself to my sister and my parents would always stay at the hospital with my sister and never leave her there on her own to my 4-year old’s eyes I was obviously not good enough if my parents could abandon me at the hospital with my broken arm. I still deeply and completely love and accept myself.

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear I am grateful to acknowledge that: I am so surprised at the intensity of my feelings I now see the incident with a new perspective and non-judgmental attitude towards parents, sister and self. Because I deeply and completely love and accept myself.

I am grateful to acknowledge that even though: my feelings were bruised and broken I forgive my parents for not being able to keep their promise and leaving me at the hospital they were doing the best they could under the circumstances and I didn’t die because of my broken arm! Because I deeply and completely love and accept myself And I’m choosing to understand that: “it’s not always about me!” and that people really do do the best they can and as a kid I bet I made other misdirected decisions that still and that I can find and shift them. Because I deeply and completely love and accept myself

Diagnosed as Schizophrenic Anxiety, Stress and Insomnia Hi Everyone, Abraham Bruck takes us through three sessions wherein he makes impressive progress with a challenging client. At the end he says, “The insomnia was no longer an issue; “I tap at night and fall right asleep”. The hate and negative vibrations were no longer an issue; “I experienced some phenomena while consciously/spiritually radiating love around me…suddenly I felt as if my thoughts and the space around me ‘cleared up’. It’s hard to describe but it felt like I was in a new zone, I felt a sort of unfamiliar though protective energy around me...” Hugs, Gary

Session One Gregoire is a 27 year old single student who lives with his mother with whom he has “no real verbal relationship”. His parents are originally from the Caribbean. He has the “rare communication” with his father. By his own admission he is “a lot like him; shy, reserved and non-verbal”. Gregoire was diagnosed as schizophrenic, has been on and off

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear medications and in and out of hospitals for most of the past 5-6 years. Hence he is just starting college at 27. He “hears voices”, he’s “OK, one on one”, “shuts down in a group” and then “gets depressed about bad interaction”. He stopped his meds at the end of June (two months before our first session), and is starting to feel the effects. He complained of nausea: “like I want to throw up after an upset or stress”, “tension around my face coming in at me—pressure—like everyone is looking at me”. At this point, I thought I had enough to go on, so I explained the Table Top metaphor and asked for a specific incident, the Table Top being Anxiety and Stress. [The Table top is the emotional issue. Knock any of the legs out from under it, and everything starts to slide off. Editor]

The incident happened in 6th grade. There was a camera crew in the class. The topic under discussion was relationships. Everyone had a turn in front of the camera. By the time the “camera and spotlight focused in on me, the pressure had built up so much that I went blind”. The 0-10 intensity was a 9-10, the incident took maybe one minute. We tapped on: Even though: I have an emotional charge of 9 or 10 on the spotlight incident, I deeply and completely love and accept myself. We tapped 2-3 rounds of that and the intensity went down to a 6-7.

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear When asked how he knew that, where in his body he felt it, he said that there was a tightness in his stomach. We tapped another few rounds: Even though: I still have this 6-7 tightness in my stomach, I deeply and completely love and accept myself and it went down to a 0.

The Train The next incident took place on a train with his mother when he was 4-5 years old. He was upset and making a lot of noise. His mother said “Look, everyone is looking at you!” He said, “I turned around and looked, and sure enough, a lot of faces were looking at me”. And although that did not have much of an emotional charge during the session (to his surprise), a recent incident did pop up, which did have an inensity of 8: As he was walking down the street a couple of days before the session, he walked by 2 people. He felt that they were looking at him and talking about him, and then another person in front of him turned around and looked at him as well. He felt it as a “heavy weight” mainly around his face. We tapped: Even though: I feel this heavy weight when people are staring at me, I choose to feel calm relaxed and comfortable. We tapped on the negative, positive and alternating (Dr. Patricia Carrington style). One sequence got it down to a 4 and the next to a 0.

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear Then he said that “the person in front of me is still looking at me and shaking his head”—which, of course, is a new aspect of “shaking his head”. The intensity went up to a 4 again. Did a couple of rounds of: Even though: he was shaking his head … and it went down to a 0. We went on to the most recent incident with a high charge: In July he was taking a course. One day the professor was late and a few students were hanging out in the waiting room: “I was about to walk in and I noticed them sitting there, so I sat down some distance away; they were talking, sitting, I started to worry, I was just looking, saying to myself, “look away if you’re not going to say anything”. Passing glances at the people, I got dizzy following the conversation; I stopped looking and went into my protective shell; zoned out. “Then one of the girls turned and said, ‘Why are you sitting all the way over there?’ I smiled, nodded and turned away, I had this numb feeling in my head” with an intensity of 6. Even though: I have this 6 numbness in my head about the waiting room incident, I choose to feel calm, relaxed and confident. The numbness went to a 0 and turned to a sadness of 5. Time was running out; we got the sadness down to a 4 and I said that I would email some homework to him so he could practice tapping and get the sadness down to a 0.

Page 36

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear At the very end he said that he also has terrible trouble getting to sleep. I told him that I would email some tapping instructions for that also. I sent him 3 sheets of tapping instructions in my standard Homework Format: 1) Even though: I still have some of this sadness about the waiting room incident, I deeply and completely love and accept myself. 2) Even though I have this anxiety when I am in public, I choose to feel calm, relaxed and confident. 3) Even though: I have trouble getting to sleep, I choose to surprise myself at how quickly and easily I can get to sleep.

Session Two Gregoire came in to the next session, much more relaxed. By the way, I forgot to mention it, but Gregoire had gone to the Emofree.com site and downloaded the free EFT manual and had learnt to tap before he even called me. He found me in the EFT Practitioners List on the site. So I asked him how the homework had gone: he said that the sleep issue was going really well; instead of getting to sleep at 3:30 or 4:00 a.m. with great difficulty, he was getting to sleep at 1:30 easily. So, as far as he was concerned, the insomnia was under control and getting even better.

Page 37

• International Copyrights

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear I tested the “waiting room” incident and then the sadness from the previous sesson, both of which were not longer issues: intensity level: 0, for both.

People hate me But he now said that he feels that “people hate me and are sending negative vibrations towards me.” (Another Leg of the Anxiety/Stress Table Top.) I asked him how he knew this. And he said, “from their facial expressions,” and then he went on to say, “I’m pulling in the negative energy from them.” So I wrote down: Even though: I feel people hate me and are sending negative vibrations towards me … and he kept right on talking, quite unlike the first session when I needed to really pull everything out of him. He recalled an incident that still bothered him a lot: recently in school, one of the girls made a comment to him—not in a mean way—perhaps even as a compliment—Gregoire, himself had mentioned that he was noticing that he was walking with more confidence, that his posture was better. The girl had said to him: “You can walk but you still can’t talk.” So now he wants to be able to talk. His intensity level was low a 2-3.

Insomnia He then went on about the insomnia: even though there was significant progress as mentioned earlier, he said that there now seems to be a new obstacle: “The night pictures get stuck.” He explained that every time he tries to go to sleep, a picture pops into his head and it takes all his attention and he can’t fall asleep for quite a while.

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear Shatter the glass I asked him to close his eyes and get a picture; he got one. Then I told him to pretend that it was made of glass and shatter it; he did. We repeated that a few times and then I asked him to get a picture and to hold it without shattering, and he couldn’t. I told him that he now has a tool that will work on unwanted images. He was OK with that. A Hateful Thoughts Magnet I asked him how he knew that people were directing hateful and negative vibrations toward him. I said most people just walk around, preoccupied with their own thoughts and feelings, etc., and most, if not all of them, don’t even know or care if he exists. He admitted that that was true. I said, “But that’s logic—emotionally you feel the hate and negativity.” I told him that, in his own words, he said that he was “pulling it in;” so he was a Negative Vibration Magnet, a Hateful Thoughts Magnet. I told him that all around us there were radio and television and cell phone waves, but we don’t see or hear them. Why not? Because we’re not “tuned in” to the right frequencies. I told him that all around us there were also all manner of negative and hateful (and worse) thought vibrations, being sent out from all over the world. Radiating love I said, “Try this: Close your eyes and feel love in your heart. Radiate that love out … radiate out farther and farther … more and more powerful feelings of Love …” And I just let him sit there for a few minutes. I brought him back and told him that he should practice that several times a day.

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear “As long as you are radiating out Love, you cannot be pulling in hate and negativity, real or imagined. As you were radiating Love, did you feel any hate or negativity?” He did not. I told him that the Love Radiation will create a protective shield and that no negativity could penetrate it. He was very happy with that. His homework was: Even though: I’m pulling in / attracting negativity and hate like a magnet, I choose to replace that by radiating / shining Love outward (like the sun radiates / shines light) ...and just like nothing can touch the sun, as long as it is radiating light, in the same way, no negativity or hate (imagined or real) can reach me as long as I am radiating love.

Session Three This was a phone session. The insomnia was no longer an issue: “I tap at night and fall right asleep,” he said. The hate and negative vibrations were no longer an issue: “I experienced some phenomena while consciously/spiritually radiating love around me… suddenly I felt as if my thoughts and the space around me ‘cleared up’. It’s hard to describe but it felt like I was in a new zone, I felt a sort of unfamiliar, though protective, energy around me...” Communication He wanted to be able to talk freely. He related 3-4 specific incidences

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear that happened that week where he felt that his communication was lacking. We worked out 3 tapping statements, and he was to tap 3 rounds 3 times a day, whether he felt that he needed it or not: once upon waking in the morning, once before or after lunch and once before going to sleep at night. I told him to pick one and use it until the intensity level went down to a least a 1, preferably 0, and then go on to the next, etc…

Step 4 One Round Alternating Reminder and Choice Phrases ❖❖❖ I had not heard from Gregoire for a while so I shot him an email just asking how he’s doing, especially with the desire to be more talkative. This was his response: hi Abraham, I have to work some more at it. I tapped a bit on understanding people better, and it has helped. I noticed I was able to give some more feedback in a group setting, it also helped that I studied more for the class and understood certain concepts more clearly. But it seems I still haven’t got to the level that I consider to be ‘up to par.’ I will say that I never felt as comfortable as far as being a part of the class group, this quickly into the semester. In any case, I have more free time for the rest of the week, so I will schedule more time in for EFT. Gregoire By Abraham Bruck, EFT-Adv ❖❖❖ . ❖❖❖ . ❖❖❖

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear

4

Jump Right In! So how do you do EFT, anyway? At this point, you’ve seen how some people have gotten some success using EFT. But you’re probably wondering how the heck did they do it, and what order, and what do they mean, tapping? So, I decided I’d make this chapter an excerpt from my book, Change Your Mind! with EFT, the Basics, so you can get an idea of how to do what we’ve been talking about. -Editor.

Which would you prefer—to listen to me tell you about apples, or try one out for yourself? It’s obvious that you’ll know more about applesif you try them yourself—even if you only take one little teensy bite—than if I spent the next ten years telling you about them. I could tell you about EFT all night long, but until you experience it, you won’t have a real idea about what it can do. We’re going in running. Let’s just get on with it!

An experiment Are you experiencing any small thing you would rather not have or be feeling in your life right now, this very minute? A physical pain, or a memory, maybe? Write down on a sheet of paper what it is. It can be anything: a headache, a sore back, a knee pain, or a toothache. Or, you might be worrying about something, feeling

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear anxious, or feeling lazy! Maybe it’s 3:00 p.m., and you’re in the midst of the afternoon slump. You might be drowsy, or foggyheaded. Or maybe it’s late at night and you’re reading because you can’t sleep, or your feet are cold. Maybe you want something but you don’t know quite what, so you’re inclined to reach for ice cream, cookies, or a candy bar. A cigarette, or a beer, maybe. The feeling of wanting—craving—is enough to make you lose attention on whatever it is you were doing. Maybe it’s not a pain at all but a longing. Or frustration because you can’t do something you want to do—or maybe you have to give a speech tomorrow, and just thinking about the stage, never mind going up on it and giving a forty-five minute talk, makes you nauseous. Or perhaps you have to take a test tomorrow. You’ve studied and know the material, but are still freaked out by the idea of being tested. Or you could be a world-class surfer who has never told anyone about your fear about falling off big waves. You brave it out, over-ride your fear every time you go out, but it sits in the pit of your stomach like a lead ball each time. Find your own. Write it down on a piece of paper. Later you will be so familiar with the process you won’t need to write anything down, but for now it will help you discover what to do, and when.

Feel the pain/emotion/sensation Remember: It’s alright to feel like this! It’s not a character fault! If we don’t feel, chances are we’re dead or on our way. In order to find out how to resolve something, we have to identify it first. Feeling is OK: feeling it is how we find the problem. Be with it as much as you can without hurting yourself. It is not

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear the point to traumatize yourself! Here are some questions that will help: Where is the pain/feeling/sensation in your body? Or is it ouside of your body? In your head? In your thoughts only? How would you describe it to me? Is it sharp, dull, an ache, just a feeling of being squashed? Is it intense, or light, or hot? Does it come in waves, or is it erratic? Is it tiring, black, heavy, nauseating?

ISSUE: I have a headache at the top of my head or My tooth is throbbing* or I’m sad because... or I feel sleepy

Does it have a sound or a shape? A color or texture? Someone’s voice? Describe it—whatever “it” is—to yourself very well and write it down.

Rating the sensation Let’s say that you have a huge thermometer that measures intensity of feeling. It’s marked with intervals from zero up to ten, with ten being the highest in intensity. What rating would you give the intensity of your feeling or sensation (this is often called SUD, or Subjective Units of Distress)? If it’s hard for you to imagine a number for the rating, guess. Your intuition will usually be right. This number is a reference point so when you’re done with this short process you’ll be able to see where you came from, and if you have made progress. * Please! If you have a toothache, make sure to check it out with your dentist, too! © Angela Treat Lyon & Contributing Authors 2007 All rights reserved •

Page 47

• International Copyrights

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear Again, write down the number you got.

ISSUE:

Being able to notice If you have marked the intensity of your feeling at only a one or two, find another one that has at least a five rating, so you can notice a difference when you’ve finished the exercise. If you can’t find something that bothers you right now, go back to a time when you had a troubling pain, experience or emotion. Use that.

I have a headache at the top of my head 8 My tooth is throbbing 9 I feel sleepy 6

Sometimes I ask people if there is any experience or incident in their lives that they would erase or get rid of, if they only could. These work really well!

Please be kind to yourself Be responsible for your well-being—whether you’re feeling a present sensation or one from the past. For now, avoid choosing one that is really distressing (a nine or a ten)—this is just an exercise! EFT is meant to be as pain/ distress-free as we can make it. We’re making a point here, not trying to get you into extreme pain or paroxysms of raging emotion!

Here we go Now. You have a sensation that you have named and described on your sheet of paper. You have rated this sensation, and written down the rating.

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear Refer to the illustrations in Chapter 5, Illustrations of the Tapping Points to find all the Tapping Points. To the right is how to use what is called the Karate Chop Point, for obvious reasons.

Here are the steps of the process: 1. The setup

As you tap the tips or the ends of the fingers of one hand against the Karate Chop Point (as in the diagram), you say the Setup Phrase. The setup phrase acknowledges the pain (speak it out loud). You say: even though I have this pain/feeling/sensation (this anger, fear, craving, worry) Still tapping the Karate Chop Point, you continue and say: I deeply and completely accept myself Altogether it will look and sound like this: even though I have this pain/feeling/sensation I deeply and completely accept myself Repeat these two phrases so that you have said them three times, as you simultaneously and continually strike the Karate Chop Point. Strike the Karate Chop point firmly, but without hurting your hands! Important note: Don’t worry that, by saying these things, you might be installing these negative things into your system— they’re already there, or you wouldn’t be thinking or feeling them! All you’re doing is letting them come out as the truth about how you feel right now in this moment.

© Angela Treat Lyon & Contributing Authors 2007 All rights reserved •

Page 49

• International Copyrights

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear 2. The tapping sequence Next, with the tips of your first and second fingers, tap on each face point, moving down to the collarbone and underarm points. Tap firmly about 5 to 7 times on each point as you repeat the words, “this pain (feeling, sensation)” as you go down the line of tapping points. There are seven points. Make sure you find and tap each one. Tap the same intensity you would as if you were drumming the table in impatience— it’s about that same firmness. Please, not so hard that you hurt or bruise yourself! If tapping hurts, you can gently rub the points with your fingertips.

ISSUE: I have a headache at the top of my head 3! wow! My tooth is throbbing 2

3. Check your new rating At the end of the tapping sequence, check the intensity rating for your pain/emotion/ sensation.

I still feel sleepy 4

Is the rating the same? Lower? Higher? Write down your results, and any notes you might want to add.

One more time If the rating is the same or higher, repeat the process, saying, “even though I still have this....” Write down your results, and any notes you might want to add.

© Angela Treat Lyon & Contributing Authors 2007 All rights reserved •

Page 50

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear

Again If there is little or no movement or the rating is higher, try again. This time, try rubbing the Sore Spots for the Setup Statements. Just for fun, add the Finger Points and the Gamut, also seen in Chapter 5. Do your best to get the rating down to zero, but if you remain at a livable one or two, it’s OK, too. Some people tap down to a 2 or 3 and by the end of the next hour or the morning of the next day it’s a zero. Write down your results, and any notes you might want to add. (And if it is a toothache, please see your dentist, too!)

Good! You have now completed your first experience using EFT! By this time, you ought to have had some movement of the energy in your system. Many people experience their pain disappearing, their emotions calming, or craving going away. Breathing often becomes deeper and fuller. Some people sigh or yawn. Some get shivers down the back or other part of the body. In the interest of experimentation, testing like this is simply how to get a taste of the process of EFT—I can’t possibly forecast what might happen for you. I hope you got relief from whatever pain or unwanted feeling you were experiencing, and that you feel better than you did before. Your own sensations and your own notes are tangible (think of what the word ‘tangible’ means: touchable, within reach!) evidence that you have just taught yourself the basics of a tool with which, if you choose, you can change the quality of your life.

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear

A recap:

Feel it. Be specific: the more carefully you notice what you feel, the more disrupted energy you can clear and heal. Say, for example, you have a headache. The more specific you can be the better. Instead of saying, “I have a headache,” say, “I have a headache in the top part of my head on the right side.” Check creafully to see what something is, where it is, how it feels, and how much intensity it has. Identify it, what ever “it” is!

Rate it/Write it down: Give it a number—what intensity level is it at for you? If you can’t “see” a thermometer or “hear” a number, or feel a level of intensity—guess! Write it down!

Setup and I Accept Statement: Tap on the Karate Chop point, or rub the Sore Spot, and repeat the Setup phrase three times: Even though I have this ____________ , I deeply and completely accept myself (or, I want to love and accept myself or I am willing to think about loving and accepting myself)

Examples of I accept phrases for kids: I’m a great kid or My Mom loves me

Tap the Sequence: Eyebrow point Side Eye Under eye Under nose Chin Collarbone Underarm

Rate/Write: What is your intensity rating now? Write it down. Add anything you noticed as you went through the process. Try it again, or as many times as you need to get comfortable with the sequence and the setups. You might want to write down anything you flashed on as you tapped: a memory, an insight, how your body feels. Maybe you feel generally brighter and happier all over.

The Sequence Part II: Tapping B. Repeat a reminder phrase like, “this headache” (the gist of the setup phrase) as you tap down all points Repeat Step B 2 or 3 times. Repeat as many times as it takes to get relief or to get yourself comfortable. When you have had a satisfying shift in thinking or feeling about the issue you are tapping on, create a short, positive phrase that would encapsulate how you’d rather feel or be. Then do Step C.

C. Say & repeat the gist of an “I choose” phrase as you tap down through all the tapping points

“Will EFT Let Me Talk to the Dead?” A very unusual EFT story A few weeks after I (Karen Lewis) had completed my Foundation level EFT in September 2006, one of my herbal clients, Maria, approached me about learning Reiki. She did however have a most unusual question to ask—would it be likely to have the dead communicate with her once she had done the course? I replied that Reiki often increases one’s intuitive abilities but could not say if she was likely to become mediumistic or not.

I don’t want this! Apparently both her parents have this ability, but it wasn’t something she wanted for herself. She went away and a few days later rang me to say she wasn’t sure if she wanted to do the Reiki after all, as a few testimonials in the manual do comment on increased psychic ability. I could hear the fear in her voice down the telephone line. I asked her if she had heard of EFT. “No, what’s that?” I explained that it is a way of dealing with fears and negative emotions and might be of help to her. I gave her Gary’s site details to download the manual, and said she could ring me back if she had any problems with it.

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear Three days later Maria rang again: could we have a session together. I’d already explained I was a total beginner but we were both happy to approach it as a case study. When she arrived she told me she had been tapping away all week but didn’t seem to have got very far.

What does this mean to you? We started by talking a little about what the dead communicating meant to her. It made her very frightened; just talking about it I could see that she was getting very emotional about it. When had this started? “Since childhood, just starting school, in fact. I can remember my father talking about the dead people who spoke to him. It was very traumatic for me. In fact, my mother told me that I started sleepwalking at that time.” She gave a Intensity value of 10/10 for the fear.

Fear of the dark! “In actual fact,” she continued, “I know this sounds really silly, but I’ve also had this terrible fear of the dark, probably since about that same time.” This also rated a 10/10. I was able to reassure her that quite a few people have a fear of the dark, including myself, or rather specifically of looking into a mirror in the dark (not something I would normally admit to) but that EFT might be able to help us both. I digressed slightly to explain a little about Borrowing Benefits and then she finished by telling me she also had a stomach discomfort, which she rated as 8/10. “What would you like to start with?” I asked Maria, and after a moment’s thought she decided the fear of the dark was her biggest problem, as she could only go to sleep at night with a light on.

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear She didn’t need much reminding of how to perform the rounds so we started with:

Even though: I have this terrible fear of the dark I deeply and completely love and accept myself Maria tapped on herself and I accompanied her. After the first round we were down to 9; the next round with this remaining fear of the dark brought Maria down to 7. Another repeat brought the rating down to 6 and Maria reported feeling “very happy”. She certainly looked much brighter than when we started. One more round got us down to 4/10. “Oh this feels very nice”, said Maria. “It’s almost as if I can’t be bothered to think about the problem any more. Is that normal for this?” I told her it often happened that way. With the fifth round, Maria got down to a 3/10 and said she was feeling calmer than she had been for a week. Between us we decided to get a little more adventurous for the next round and incorporate the technique of Choices as per Dr. Patricia Carrington. I wasn’t quite sure if I was doing it right but decided to go with the flow anyway.

Then a round with just the positive Choices. This brought the intensity down from 3 to 2/10 and Maria said she felt much lighter and happier. We did one more round in the same way, this time interspersed with a lot of giggles. “Fancy me being afraid of ghosts?” and “why did I let my Dad’s words frighten me?” This got us down to 1/10. Maria said she felt quite happy with that. “So, your fear of the dead coming through, once you’ve done your Reiki course.” I asked. “What is the rating now, bearing in mind

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear you were previously 10/10?” She looked absolutely amazed as she said, “Do you know, it doesn’t bother me in the slightest? That’s amazing!” “What about your 8/10 for stomach discomfort?” Also gone. I said to her, “Remember me talking about Borrowing Benefits earlier, and my mirror fear? Well, without me consciously working on it, it feels as if that has been helped as well.” An hour and a quarter had gone by, just like that. We were both quite giggly and light-hearted. This was a big change for Maria as she had looked a bit harried when she came in. She went home and rang me the next day to say she had felt a bit of tension that night, but slept with a night light rather than the bedroom light on—perhaps she was actually still at a 4/10, but that something else had come to mind and she had tapped on that and felt better afterwards. It was manageable now. She came on her Reiki course and said all had been fine since the session with just the odd niggle, which she tapped on. And I can look into mirrors now in the dark with no hesitation at all. Good old EFT! ❖❖❖ . ❖❖❖ . ❖❖❖ About the Practitioner: The session in the article was actually my very first session with someone other than me. We were both so impressed by the efficacy of EFT that I decided I was definitely going to go to Practitioner level. Since then, I have had more EFT sessions with various people, all quite satisfactory and look forward to building my client base and helping others to enable and empower themselves by using EFT.

Daddy Left Me Will my boyfriend leave me, too? Hi Everyone, Tune in as Deborah Miller from Mexico assists a very anxious client whose issues over one event range from anxiety and grief to fear and abandonment. Hugs, Gary

❖❖❖ Gabriela came in the room with a palpable energy. She was filled with anxiety, was breathing very shallowly and could barely sit still. For the past month, she was feeling depressed. She was having trouble sleeping, didn’t feel like eating; she didn’t want to work or go out. She wanted to cry but couldn’t. She felt a pressure on her chest. She was also feeling the presence of her father. I first asked her if there was anything that happened about a month ago. She said no. Then I asked her about her father, thinking that possibly he died not so long ago. Her father died 16 years ago, but she said she still misses him a lot. The anniversary of his death was about a month ago. Was this a coincidence or part of the anxiety? I started with the physical effects of her anxiety and her feelings of missing her father. We tapped on her anxiety, depression, not being able to sleep, or willingness to eat. I included being afraid

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear to sleep because her father may try to communicate with her and she is afraid to hear what he may tell her in her dreams. I focused on her missing him and that it was all right. The whole time we were tapping she was fidgeting, her body moving, her feet moving from one position to another. She was obviously uncomfortable with herself and/or the topic.

Finding the core emotional cause When we finished the first round she was much more relaxed. I could see that she was breathing more deeply and her fidgeting had almost stopped. She said that she felt good and that the image of her father was gone. The depression was much less but not completely gone. So I asked her to explain more about her life since her parents died. She said that she is the oldest of four. She had to act as the mother and father to her brothers and sisters after her parents died when she was nine years old. She worked from the age of nine to support herself and her siblings. She has never had a boyfriend as there was never time. She is now 25 years old. Four years ago the last of her siblings moved out after she worked to raise them and put them through school. She works as a cook in a restaurant. Her boyfriend came with her and was waiting outside. I asked her how long they had been going out. She said one month.

Timing and connections I thought how interesting that she starts going out with someone one month ago on the anniversary of her father’s death. I asked her how her parents died. She said they died in an automobile accident.

Page 75

• International Copyrights

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear Then I asked her what her boyfriend does. She said he is a chauffeur. She is afraid—he leaves for work for 2-3 days and she feels alone. I realized there is a connection between the new boyfriend driving for his work and her fear of him being in an accident like her parents.

I’m afraid, feeling abandoned So we did the next round of tapping on her being afraid that her boyfriend will die in an automobile accident just like her father. We tapped on being abandoned again, being left alone, being left responsible, being afraid to lose him just like her father. Her fear and anxiety dropped by half. I asked her to describe a bit more about her parents’ accident. She said that they had gone to another village and on their way back, 5 minutes from home, were in an accident that killed them both. The doctors didn’t want to tell her the details as she was so young. She ended up asking a woman to help her bury her parents and from then on started to work with this woman to pay for raising her siblings.

I miss my dad She reiterated how she misses her father. She was close to her father. He took her with him everywhere, whereas her mother yelled at and hit her. She doesn’t have memories of her mother but misses her father still. I asked her if her boyfriend reminds her of her father and she told me that he has the same stature, body type and his hair is just like her father’s. So the next round I tapped on her being afraid that her new boyfriend will leave her just like her father, that she is afraid to let him in because he may abandon her too, that he may die in an automobile accident too, that she may like him because he looks so much like her father (stature, hair, etc), that she is afraid

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear because her boyfriend wants to help take care of her and she’s not used to it, that she doesn’t want to like him just because he looks like her father, that she wants to be in a relationship that is good for her, where she is part of a loving relationship. She looked so happy when we finished. She said the weight on her chest was gone, she felt good, she was yawning, she felt hungry (remember, she hasn’t been eating), she was free of the fear, the image of her father and of being abandoned. What a beautiful release for Gabriela. Here is a young woman who meets someone who reminds her of her father and she instantly feels his presence and his absence. The new boyfriend is a chauffeur and that triggers her fear of losing the one she loves in a car accident. Isn’t the Universe incredible in bringing in events that help us recognize our fears so that they can be released? Deborah Miller, PhD

“The most important thing I’ve learned is that all comes from the light within. So many of us look outside of ourselves to find love, peace, happiness, or whatever we want in life, even though it is within us at all times. “Loving ourselves allows us to love others, being at peace with ourselves allows us to be at peace with others, being happy with ourselves allows us to be happy with others, and so on. “The journey within is the path.”

EFT and Dreams Panic and heart palpitations subside after doing EFT on dreams Hi Everyone, Aileen Nobles displays creative approaches and useful language in this interesting case of using EFT hand-in-hand with dreams. Hugs, Gary

❖❖❖ When Jane came into my office she told me she had been plagued for years with two reoccurring nightmares. She was depressed, had heart palpitations and suffered from the occasional panic attack. She desperately wanted to stop having two dreams that really upset her.

The toilet dream In the first dream, she constantly found herself needing to have a bowel movement, yet every toilet she found was backed up, overflowing and filthy. She would desperately run from toilet to toilet, finding the same situation wherever she went. Her desperation to relieve herself grew in intensity, until she would wake up in a sweat with heart palpitations.

The nightmare She would find herself walking along a road, when she would notice she was being stalked by someone in dark clothes who

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear looked like a foreigner. She would run, and he would run with her, hiding behind bushes and buildings. She tried to hide but she would hear him coming and start running again trying to escape. Finally she would wake up, again sweating and experiencing heart palpitations.

In real life In her own life Jane had been very passive. Her husband of many years was very clever with words. He had a way of blaming her and putting her down about anything that wasn’t running smoothly in their family life. Jane never spoke up. She swallowed her pain and anger year after year. She started to feel more and more depressed and began having panic attacks and palpitations. As our session began Jane requested that we start tapping on her toilet dreams, even though I would have chosen to first focus on her fear of speaking up, and the suppressed pain and anger. It was okay, as all roads lead to Mecca. She began gently rubbing her sore spots: Even though: I have these disgusting and upsetting dreams it’s okay, I’m still a terrific person anyway. ...these dreams are trying to tell me something and I’m not listening, it’s ok, I’m still a pretty great person.

Even Though: I have carried a lot of garbage inside me that I’ve stuffed over the years by not speaking up.

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear All this garbage wants to come out, and it deserves to go down the toilet Perhaps my toilets are overflowing because I haven’t released any of my stuff My subconscious and Higher Self are showing me that I need to release this garbage but I can’t seem to do it When I try and find a place to relieve myself, its always overflowing, I desperately need to go, and I can’t, and I feel panic I see that my need to release all I have inside is essential The stopped up toilets are a mirror of how I am inside I’m ready to release all my anger and pain, and honor myself by speaking up I dont need to have these stuffed up toilet dreams anymore as I release my pent up emotions We talked about letting her husband know how she felt. She decided that she didn’t deserve to be spoken to in that tone of voice, and wouldn’t accept being blamed anymore. I had her imagine herself speaking up to him quite calmly, as she tapped on her gamut point [see Chapter Five, Illustrated Tapping Points -Editor]. It felt natural and easy to her. We tapped on releasing old hurts and put downs, until she felt clear of any buried emotions. Then another basic round of:

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear If I need to have any more toilet dreams the toilets will be clean and clear for me as I continue to release all my garbage that I have stuffed inside I am now able to speak up and honor myself in a loving and centered way It feels good to express myself , I deserve it As I express myself, I no longer need to experience heart palpitations. My heart and my love are becoming stronger right now We tested Jane with kinesology (muscle testing), and she was strong on choosing, allowing, and deserving. If any of these had tested weak we would have continued to tap on not allowing or not deserving. In my experience its essential to have agreement on all levels of our Being with allowing and deserving. Next we moved to her nightmare of being stalked and chased. I explained to Jane that any dark person chasing us or threatening us in any way in a dream, is nothing more than an aspect of ourselves that we have not yet bought into the Light. I had Jane begin by rubbing her sore spots:

Even though: These dreams of someone stalking me are terrifying, perhaps in some way they are trying to help me, and whatever they are trying to tell me, I can love and accept myself anyway. We did a couple of basic rounds:

© Angela Treat Lyon & Contributing Authors 2007 All rights reserved •

Page 85

• International Copyrights

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear This feeling of being stalked terrifies me. This person feels so dark and scary. What if this dark and scary person is a dark part of me I haven’t looked at. What if this dark and scary person needs help. Perhaps this scary part really is a part of me. What if I acknowledge the parts of myself that so far I have chosen to keep in the dark. Perhaps I will let all my anger come to the surface and release it. We tapped using the long version, including using the finger points. When she reached her little finger as she tapped on the cuticle she said: I forgive myself for all my terrible thoughts I have had about my husband that I stuffed inside. I forgive myself and my husband for our behavior and for contributing in any way to creating this pain inside of me. We went to the karate point. I understand my husband did the best he could coming from his limited male perspective. I know he loves me. If he was blessed with my sensitivity, he would have behaved differently, but he chose to be himself.

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear I needed him to be who I wanted him to be, how dare he behave the way he wanted to, instead of the way I wanted him to. What right does he have to do it his way? She began to laugh.

Tapping on the sore spot: Even though there were times when I wanted to strangle him, its ok, I can love and accept myself anyway. She hadn’t mentioned these thoughts to me, but admitted afterwards that she had periodically had them.)

Long sequence: I can now release all my guilt at myself for the thoughts I had. I no longer need to stuff my emotions, I am ready to speak up. I’m really terrific, and our marriage will now improve. Now I have released my anger, I can open my heart and allow myself to feel more loving toward my husband. Life will only get better. I am ready now. No more scary dreams...I dont need them any more. Jane had shut herself down sexually over the years. She used the excuse of menopause being the reason instead of suppressed anger.

Page 87

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear It was wonderful to receive her call a week later and hear that she had had no more dreams of being stalked. She did have a toilet dream where she found a clean and functioning toilet. She is now feeling as playful and sensual as she did when she and her husband first got married. Jane has had no palpitations or panic attacks since our last session. Dreams are always our friends, and if they seem scary, once interpreted, the issues we need to release will free us from the need to experience guidance in this form. EFT offers the quickest way I have ever come across that allows us to utilize the information we are being given in our dream state to release and grow. Love and Light, Aileen Nobles

EFT Newbie Resolves Trip Anxiety “I was stunned with the great results.” Hi Everyone, For 30 years Elizabeth Seifert experienced substantial anxiety before taking a trip. Just before a recent trip, however, she applied EFT for whatever thoughts occurred to her. The result? The trip anxiety vanished. Hugs, Gary

❖❖❖ Dear Gary, I originally became interested in EFT for my own and my oldest son’s extremely wide-ranging food allergies. My son’s allergies are even more extreme than my own to the point that I can write down on one sheet of paper everything that he can eat. (And he is only 8 years old.) Gary Craig comments: Although these food allergies are not addressed in this article, I wish to emphasize that EFT can likely improve or eliminate them.

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear Well, I’m a stark “newbie” at all of this. Last month, I had just downloaded your free online manual. I read through most of the first part when I had to ready my family for an out of town trip. This might not seem like much but to me, it is. You see, ever since I was a small girl, I’ve always had a tremendous trip anxiety/anticipation. The night before any trip (be it a school field or family trip), I couldn’t sleep. By that, I mean that it would take me a very long time to fall asleep (sometimes several hours). Plus, I would wake frequently during the night. I would have dreams/nightmares of such a nature that I would feel as if I hadn’t slept at all. My mind always seemed to “go in a loop” of incessant chatter surrounding the trip. I’ve had this for over 30 years now. Now that I have a growing family, that incessant chatter has only increased before a trip especially since I have a long “laundry” list of items to pack as result of my son’s allergies. Well, the night before our trip to visit my husband’s father, everyone else was already in bed. I was still awake getting things together. I finally decided to do some relaxation exercises and tap for all the things about which I could think regarding my trip anxiety.

I simply followed my intuition and tapped on my thoughts as they came to mind. After about 15 minutes, I decided to retire and leave whatever was undone until the morning. I did this even though we had

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear plans to leave as early in the morning as possible, something which is not normal for me to be able to do. Well, I am happy to report that not only did my anxiety not keep me awake—but I didn’t have the usual worrisome thoughts at all prior to falling asleep! Additionally, I did not wake during the night as result of the loop of “incessant mind chatter”, either!!! I woke up early and feeling rested despite having to rise several hours earlier than my normal time. This was my first personal use of EFT, and I was stunned with the great results. Many Blessings, Elizabeth Seifert

Getting to the Core of Anxiety Dissolving September 11 anxieties Hi Everyone, Seasoned practitioners are aware that anxiety is often a generalized state. That is, the client feels anxious but is unable to pinpoint the exact reason. EFT can often be effective in giving some relief to this generalized state but often does its job most elegantly when the true cause can be found. Dr. Carol Look provides us with an insightful look at this process as she applies it to “Mark,” a seasoned EFT practitioner who reported an uncomfortable level of anxiety since the September 11, 2001 tragedies. As usual, Carol’s quality languaging is worth studying. Hugs, Gary

❖❖❖ Last week I taught two EFT classes to therapists, many of whom were overwrought and distressed from their feelings about the September 11th trauma. Their distress of course was amplified by their clients’ feelings about September 11th and the future. This case shows how using exact language is needed to “hit the spot.” During the second class a seasoned EFT practitioner, “Mark,” reported an uncomfortable level of anxiety since September 11th. He had been persistent with his tapping, but hadn’t been able

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear to reduce the anxiety enough yet for his comfort. I asked him to describe what he was going through, and we began tapping for the simple anxiety that he rated at about a “6.”

Even though: I feel quite anxious since September 11th I deeply and completely accept myself I still feel anxious, I choose to feel calm and peaceful I deeply and completely accept myself These two rounds reduced his anxiety dramatically (he reported feeling considerably calmer even though he did not scale the difference). The class participants noticed that the muscle tone and expression on his face had softened. We continued to pursue the source of Mark’s anxiety beyond the obvious feelings he had of “waiting for the other shoe to drop.” We kept tapping...

Even though: I don’t feel safe anymore I deeply and completely accept myself This round was off the mark. We moved to...

Even though: I’m afraid for my family I deeply and completely accept myself and my feelings Finally, we hit the bullseye when I had him say...

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear Even though: I feel powerless because I can’t protect my family anymore I accept myself and my feelings This was a critical piece of Mark’s anxiety. Being a father, and now a grandfather, Mark had always felt a sense of responsibility to protect his immediate family. The “rules” had essentially changed with the magnitude of the September attacks. Mark described this anxiety as part of his “need to be in control.” He felt enormously relieved when these words resonated deeply with his feelings. He said he had been unable to clearly identify the exact words to alleviate his anxiety. Again, this was a 5-10 minute demonstration. At the end Mark reported feeling much better, and looked more relaxed and peaceful, even though he had no more control over his family’s safety than he had when we began. He looked greatly relieved and told me he had planned to walk down to Ground Zero after the class to help with “emotional closure” for the incident. In a follow-up email one week later, Mark said he continues to feel free of the pre-workshop anxiety. Dr. Carol Look

Non-therapist Relieves Stress Temper tantrums! Hi Everyone, Sometimes we experience stress or anxiety for reasons we are unable to discern. We may cry or have angry outbursts and aren’t really sure why. “It’s just stress,” we might say. Blair Hornbuckle is a layperson--a non-therapist--who creatively and gently applied EFT to a three year old boy who was displaying stress in the form of an unexplained temper tantrum. As it turns out, this youngster had been undergoing therapy and his therapists were unable to alleviate this behavior. They just let him “cry himself out.” Sigh! Here’s the story. Hugs, Gary

❖❖❖ Hello Gary, My name is Blair Hornbuckle, and I’ve been on your list for about eight months. I learned EFT from a hypnotherapist who has attended your workshops. She also loaned me your second set of tapes. I’m a layperson, not a therapist, and I’ve used EFT to help myself, family, and friends.

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear This example relates to stress and anxiety. My friends “Gina” and her husband came over to take a walk in the woods. They were on child-care duty for a three-year-old whose parents are both busy physicians. The child is with my friends a great deal, including some overnights. We’d finished our hike, with “Evan” in great spirits the whole way. He’d been very shy when they arrived at our house, turning away from my greeting, but had opened up a little along the nearby trail. Once back at the house we were sitting alongside our creek tossing rocks into the water.

When it was time to go, Evan began a violent temper tantrum. My friend “Gina” carried him up the hill as he screamed and sobbed, struggling in her arms. She put him in his car seat and left the door open. He continued screaming as we moved away from the car to talk. I asked what they usually do when he gets like this. “We can’t do anything,” she said. “He just has to have his way. If I talk to him it gets worse and we end up fighting, so I have to leave him alone.” She went on to tell me that Evan is seeing two therapists (speech and behavioral).

I asked what the professionals suggest during this kind of episode. “Nothing. They just let him cry himself out.” Not very elegant, I thought. Why not try EFT? I asked her permission to “try something” and she agreed.

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear I walked over to the still screaming child and said, “It’s okay. I know it’s hard for you right now.” I reached down, took his little hand and started tapping on his karate chop point.

Even though: You’re really upset right now, we all love you. I tapped around his eyes...

Even though: you’re really upset right now you’re okay just the way you are. I tapped on his face, then his chest, and the crying stopped. He began smiling, and wiped his tears away. I finished the round tapping the back of his hand, held it for a moment, then let go. He sat quietly. I turned to “Gina” and found her dumbstruck, her jaw dropped in awe. “What did you do? He can’t listen to anything when he gets like that, and touching him makes him really mad! What did you do?” I told her briefly about EFT, and suggested that it might be useful for his parents to learn. “His parents? What about me?” she said. “I need to know this!” Peace to you Gary, Blair Hornbuckle

Fear of Being Alone Pain = fear = stress = pain = .... Hi Everyone, With some frequency, we see clients with a blend of anxiety, trauma, physical pain and other issues. These problems are often so intertwined and “inter-causal” (new word?) that’s it hard to know which causes what. However, there are usually some common core issues underlying them. In the case below, Gwenn Bonnell’s anxious client comes in complaining of a physical issue (pain in her side). After that subsides, several traumas and anxiety prone issues come to the surface. As you will see, Gwenn takes these apart and EFT’s them individually throughout a long session. The client exhibits impressive relief even after Gwenn tests the results by running mental “movies” of the events. Despite these tests, the old emotional reactions are nowhere to be found. I think you will find this case widely applicable to many people. Hugs, Gary

❖❖❖ Hi Gary, A woman in her 50s came to me because she had developed a sharp pain in her right side, under her ribs, that she felt with every breath. She came to me (I advertise as specializing in alleviating pain) because she was getting ready to go to Colorado with her husband and she was concerned over this breathing pain. Not

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear only did she have to fly, but she was going skiing, so she would be in high altitudes where it was more difficult to breath, anyway. During the previous two weeks, she had been to various doctors and had some tests run to find out what was causing this pain, with no definitive answers.

It only took a few rounds of EFT to get rid of this breathing pain in her right side; then she relaxed, opened up and started telling me her story. She was going through menopause, with a lot of up and down emotions, during the past five or six months. She had lost a lot of weight, being so anxious that she couldn’t eat or sleep; she basically just cried a lot. And she suspected her husband (this is her second, only married a few years) of cheating on her. If not physically, he was at least emotionally involved with another woman. She was very insecure over this because her first husband began cheating on her very early into their marriage, in fact she was pregnant with their second child at the time (she has three grown children from her first marriage). She had been placed on Prozac by a therapist she had been seeing; however, this therapist didn’t seem to be helping her. She had discontinued the Prozac after a few months. At one point in her therapy sessions with the previous therapist, she mentioned suicide, so there was a big hullabaloo over that, and she sort of clammed up with that therapist after that. She said she was actually dreading this trip with her husband, and had even been thinking of ways to back out of it. So we began tapping with:

Page 101

• International Copyrights

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear Even though: I am afraid my husband is cheating on me... ...and she became a lot calmer. Said she could look at it without her insides getting tied up in knots. After a few more rounds, the anxiety was gone. Then we began treating the feeling of sadness she had when she thought of the time she discovered her first husband was cheating on her. This uncovered instances of abuse from her childhood. Her mother died very young, and her father tried to raise her. But by age 5, he gave her up for adoption. That is when she emigrated to America. She was adopted by a couple with no other children. And, her stepfather began sexually abusing her. When she told her stepmother about it, she totally dismissed it (I guess this is common?) So she grew up always in fear of her stepfather coming into her room at night. And with the thought pattern that if men abuse her and she stands up for herself they will leave her (words from her stepfather).

Her terrible fear was of being alone. And although she has worked her entire adult life, and has a good job, and had been through a divorce and managed to support herself and raise her son, she still had a fear of being on her own. So we talked about how she has been able to handle life on her own, and how she deserves a man that will treat her decently, and that when she loves herself enough to demand that, she will get it.

Page 102

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear We used EFT to treat her fear of being alone, that she doesn’t have to take any kind of abuse (mental, emotional or physical) from men anymore, and how she deserves love, from herself and others. This turned into a rather long session. Thankfully it was on a weekend and I had no other clients scheduled. I will never forget her reaction after our session was over—she was asking God to bless me a thousand times over! Not only was her physical pain gone, but emotionally and mentally she was so at peace.

She kept looking all over for the emotions we had released, we played a lot of “movies” over and over again to get reactions, but she said she felt so free like a great weight was lifted from her. She ended up going to Colorado with her husband and related that it was like a second honeymoon! I could tell such a difference in her voice when she called me after the vacation - life was fun again for her, and she had me laughing telling me stories about her trip. This is a great example of how people have physical pains that are really just symptoms of anxieties and traumas—and how treating the physical pain relaxes them enough to open up about the real underlying issue! Most of the time we can trace it back to their childhoods. Love & light, Gwenn Bonnell

Difficulties of Foreign Travel Vague feelings of unreality.... Hi Everyone, Detective work provides help for an anxiety disorder Paul Gray from the UK has experienced quality results by applying EFT to his anxiety disorder. Recently, however, the anxiety re-emerged on a trip to Seattle. This caused him to do a little detective work that led to previously discovered “feelings of unreality.” Once those were addressed the anxiety vanished. Hugs, Gary

❖❖❖ I have just returned to the UK after an extended trip to the States. By the way I couldn’t have done that trip before EFT—and a revelation occurred last month in Seattle. Traveling and being in a foreign country/state can cause anxiety in anyone. Maybe more so in someone that suffers from anxiety disorder. I took a trip to Florida last year and was fine for the most part. But suffered a bit from vague feelings of unreality. This is quite common with anxiety sufferers especially if they are

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear experiencing a low level of anxiety for quite long periods at a time. The thoughts go along the lines of:

“Am I dreaming, is this real, am I really here in America?” and other like thoughts. As you can imagine they can be anxietycausing feelings in themselves. I experienced this a couple of times in Florida last year but it caught me by surprise on my trip to Seattle, as I generally have no anxiety problems now. So for this trip I sat down and tried to remember the thought process, and simple as it seems now, I had, during all my previous EFT tapping for Anxiety disorder, completely missed out on feelings of unreality. So I started to tap:

Even though: I sometimes think I’m dreaming... I can’t believe that I’m here ... It suddenly dawns on me that I’m in this situation... And wouldn’t you know it—all remaining problems stopped. I feel this line of attack may help other anxiety sufferers especially as they gain confidence in EFT and start to push back their self induced boundaries. And particularly as agoraphobia often goes hand- in-hand with panic attack sufferers. Paul Gray

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear This next segment is about what Paul did before submitting his note to Gary—you’ll find it very interesting! Note from Gary: It is common for completely new innovations to have skeptics ... and EFT is no exception. Interestingly, those opposed to EFT and its many cousins have one thing in common, namely, they have not taken the time to get adequate training in the process. Accordingly, they have not properly applied it to 50 or so people to get a good sense of what is happening. Instead, with little or no training, they attack the theory and try to attribute all the impressive results to such things as distraction, power of suggestion, placebo and other equally uninformed labels. This is done despite the thousands of reports from around the world regarding unheard of successes (from highly credentialed psychologists, MD’s, etc.). I know that sounds silly, but that is what is being done. One such group of skeptics is QuackWatch.com. If you visit their web site you will see that they make concerted efforts to “debunk” just about everything. Paul Gray wrote to QuackWatch as a newcomer to EFT. He discusses how he tried many procedures for his panic-attacks and, for the first time ever, achieved impressive success. Apparently this result, together with thousands of other reports coming in from around the world, was lost on QuackWatch. Here’s his letter to them:

Dear Sir [QuackWatch], I found your site through searching on Google for opinions on Energy therapy. I agree with your comment that there are way too many sites pushing the benefits of alternative medicine/ therapy and not many that expose the down sides/ charlatans. I am glad your site exists. I am in no way informed enough or qualified enough to debate any comments made on your site.

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear However, in case you might be interested, I believe self administered EFT has cured me of a 15 year panic disorder. Since first experiencing ‘out of the blue’ anxiety attacks with subsequent high levels of general anxiety and agoraphobia, I have tried standard talk therapy with a trained psychotherapist, talk therapy with a clinical psychologist, hypnotherapy, counseling, Transcendental Meditation, muscle relaxation techniques and breathing exercises. I have also used two herbs: valerian and kava kava. The only thing that ever helped me with the panic attacks was kava. Oh and my GP sent me to a local clinic when they first started where:

I was given a brief rundown of the fight or flight response and wished the best of luck. Over the years, I have purchased books that are often written by Doctors, psychologist etc. that claim to stop panic attacks. I have visited therapists that clearly know a lot less about the disorder and various advances/treatments than I myself do. I have learned to be wary. So when I heard about EFT, the only reason I tried it was that it was free. I figured that if the inventor will let you download the full manual for free then a) it’s worth a go, and, b) he may not be another get-rich-quick charlatan. I studied the manual and started applying EFT for my current anxiety and my past anxiety. Also, any old memories that do or may hold negative emotions. Within a day it was as if all the power of the attacks had gone and my general anxiety was at a zero. I have been testing myself by doing things that I have

EFT for Stress, Panic and Fear avoided for years. Like going to the gym. Using trains. Driving on motorways. My mind is sometime still on these problems. I have not been distracted. Its just that the anxiety doesn’t come. I can even consciously worry a bit that it might, and it still doesn’t come. Its as if it has been cut off at source.

If this is the power of suggestion, I wonder why other more conventional and expensive therapies didn’t “suggest” it to me. If it is placebo effect. Then I’ll take it! It’s about time a placebo worked for me. EMAIL Paul Gray
