MODAL TECHNIQUES MASTERCLASS Intermediate
INTRODUCTION Hello fellow guitar player, thanks for checking out my Modal Masterclass! In this masterclass, I’ll be showing you some ideas for getting more out of modal scales. We’ll be working on a range of techniques and increasing your knowledge of the fretboard. For this masterclass we’ll be concentrating on the Dorian, Lydian, Mixolydian, and Aeolian modes, but with a couple of extra scales as well. Those four are the modes I use the most. There are three levels (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced) increasing in rhythmic, melodic and harmonic complexity. However, even if you’re an advanced player, there will be stuff you can use in the other parts. IN THIS PACKAGE In this second part I wanted to focus on a decidedly more cheerful sound and for this reason I chose the Mixolydian mode. This is one of the major modes, containing a major 3rd. In the beginner part we used Aeolian and Dorian, which are minor modes (containing a minor 3rd).

BASICS We’re going to be using E Mixolydian for most of the exercises in this part of the masterclass. It contains these notes… E F# G# A B C# D If you need to brush up on your basic modal theory, check out the “Basics” section in the Beginner PDF. One of the concepts we covered there was the importance of comparing modes in a “parallel” fashion (using the same root note). In the following exercise, let the open E and B strings ring throughout while you compare the sounds of E Mixolydian and E major. E major 1

It’s not a huge difference, just the drop from D# to D, but it’s a very important difference. It means that the chord built on the root (the “tonic chord”) is E7 for Mixolydian, instead of Emaj7 for the major scale. This dominant 7th chord is a big part of the Mixolydian sound… the unsettled tritone interval between the major 3rd and minor 7th (G#-D in the key of E). Again, we can look at the sequence of whole tones (two-fret gaps) and semitones (one-fret gaps) between the notes. The major scale is 2212221, but the Mixolydian is 2212212. To help you study in your own time, here are some fretboard diagrams. Again, these are a mixture of strict 3-note-per-string shapes with more compact box positions.

MIXOLYDIAN LEGATO FRAGMENT EXERCISES Legato means to play smoothly, without any break between notes. These techniques are extremely demanding on the fretboard hand, as it is required to articulate each note itself, using hammer-ons and pull-offs instead of pick strokes. There are eight legato exercises; practise them independently and then apply them to longer legato runs. Ideally each of these fragments should be practised for longer periods without stopping, looping them as long as possible. IONIAN ARPEGGIO EXERCISES In this part, we’re going to look at ways to play arpeggios in order to produce some cool melodic ideas. I’m playing these exercises with alternate picking – this sounds great when played fast, but they also can sound very melodic when you slow them down! Instead of using the Mixolydian mode, I decided to work on the diatonic sequence of the major scale. The diatonic chords are the chords that are built ONLY using the notes of a scale. For E major, those chords are E major, F# minor, G# minor, A major, B major, C# minor and D# diminished.

MIXOLYDIAN CHROMATIC PASSING NOTE EXERCISES A “passing note” is a note that doesn’t normally belong in the scale or key, but is used to join two scale notes. For example, instead of A-B, you play A-A#-B. The passing notes are what we’d consider “outside” notes, but they’re usually very quick, so they only create a temporary tension. In these exercises I’ve shown how you can incorporate chromatic passing notes into Mixolydian licks. With 3-note-per-string patterns, you will often get four notes per string, and these little runs can be great for fast licks (Steve Morse does a lot of this). PENTATONIC COMBINATION EXERCISES All major scales (and their modes) also contain the notes of three major pentatonic scales and their relative minor pentatonic scales. Here’s an example… A major: A B C# D E F# G# A major pentatonic: A B C# E F# = F# minor pentatonic: F# A B C# E D major pentatonic: D E F# A B = B minor pentatonic: B D E F# A E major pentatonic: E F# G# B C# = C# minor pentatonic: C# E F# G# B And, of course, A major also shares the same notes with E Mixolydian. So what does this mean? Basically, in an A major or E Mixolydian tonality, you can use ALL of those pentatonic scales! In an E Mixolydian tonality, B minor pentatonic (for example) will no longer function as B minor pentatonic, because the root note is now E, but it will give you a new set of melodic options. The pentatonic exercises can be used to increase your fluency, but also try jamming with them over the backing track. They’re all in B minor pentatonic, so try moving them to F# minor and C# minor and also play them over the backing track. MIXOLYDIAN LICKS AND DEMO SOLO In the 10 licks and demo solo, I’ve tried to show you how I might use all of these technical and theoretical concepts in a real musical situation. There’s nothing too difficult here, but we’re now working at a higher level than the Beginner workouts. Take your time and listen to the sound of the Mixolydian mode.
