MAJOR SCALE SOLOING Intermediate INTRODUCTION Welcome to this JamTrackCentral masterclass! There are three parts: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. You can choose your level, but also consider working through the whole masterclass. Even if you can play the licks or exercises from the Intermediate or Advanced parts, you could still learn something new from the easier parts. The format is the same for all three parts. We’ll start by looking at some theoretical concepts with exercises to develop your technique or fretboard knowledge. Next we’ll see how these concepts can be used in a real musical situation with a series of short licks. Finally, we’ll throw everything together into a cool solo that you can learn or just use for ideas. OK, are you ready?

TARGET NOTES (SLIGHT RETURN) We introduced the concept of target notes in the Beginner part of this masterclass. There are two important things about a target note... WWW.JAMTRACKCENTRAL.COM

1. It must be clear and obvious. A long note, a loud note, a repeated note, whatever. One tiny note in a fast lick will not work! 2. It has a strong relationship with the backing chord. Normally, the most powerful notes in a chord are the root, 3rd and 5th (the three notes of the triad) so these are the most common target notes. Of course, these are not strict rules. You don’t have to play any target notes! But be aware of the risks. If you run through patterns and scales without structure, your listeners will become bored very quickly. And if you try playing target notes, but with random notes, you don’t know what will happen. Try hitting a long, loud F note over an E minor chord! When you build your solo around a few strong notes that belong to the underlying chord or riff, your playing will have a structure. Always think... “What am I trying to say? What is my listener hearing?” The target notes don’t have to be root, 3rd or 5th. Thrash the major 7th or the #4th if you want to. But do it because you WANT that sound, not because you played a scale pattern and stopped on a random note! If you need to review the sound of different target notes, go to the Beginner section of this masterclass and spend some quality time with the Lick Loop backing track!

MORE ABOUT INTERVALS Before we go further with target notes, we need to look a little closer at the concept of intervals. Remember? An interval is simply the distance between two notes. In the Beginner section, we worked with target notes over a looping C major chord. The sound and character of each note is created by its distance (interval) from the root note...

The names below the Tab are called the “degrees” of the scale, and they also tell you the distance (interval) of each note from the root. C to D is a major 2nd, C to E is a major 3rd, etc. This is all pretty simple, because we’re working in a fixed environment. But what happens when the chord changes? If the chord changes to F, we have a new root note (F) and every note in the scale has a different function (and sound). When playing over a C major chord, the notes C-E-G were the root, major 3rd and 5th. But if you play those notes over an F major chord, you’re playing the 5th, the major 7th and the 2nd. Good and interesting sounds, but not the normal target notes! This is an important concept... WWW.JAMTRACKCENTRAL.COM

Intervals can be counted from the root of the overall key or scale AND from the root of each chord. Try playing this chord progression a few times... C

The key/tonality of C major is clear, because the C major chord always sounds like “home”. All the chords are built from notes of the C major scale. But each chord has its own root, its own 3rd, 5th... its own target notes! While you think about that...

TARGET NOTES WITH CHORD CHANGES The main solo for the Intermediate section is in the key of C major, and has the chords C, F, Am and G. We’re going to do what we did before, using the root, 3rd and 5th as target notes, but that means we have a different set of target notes for each chord...

Not too difficult! Notice how some notes appear more than once. The C note is the root of the C chord, the 5th of the F chord and the minor 3rd of the Am chord. Yes, that’s a MINOR 3rd in the Am chord. We’ll be dealing with that kind of stuff in the Advanced section. The actual chords in the backing track are more complex, (for example, Fmaj7#11). Don’t worry about that - they have extra notes for a more interesting sound, but the basic root-3rd-5th triad is still there. Our three target notes are still very important. Ready for some serious practice? Here are all the target notes for those chords, mapped across the fretboard.

Don’t feel that you have to learn ALL of this right now... just work with a small area of the fretboard and try to remember where the notes are. When you’re ready, try Exercise 2 (see separate Tab and video) which gives you an introduction to this concept. There are 7 short lines which you can play separately or join together in one big workout. For more of a challenge, try jamming over the solo backing track. The chord progression (again, simplified to show the basic triad types) goes like this... C C F F C C F F C C F F C C F F Am Am G G C C F G To start with, just try hitting the root note for each chord. Work all over the fretboard, trying to find those C/F/A/G root notes in different positions. Then you could try progressing like this... 1. 3rd only 2. 5th only 3. Root & 3rd only 4. Root & 5th only 5. Root, 3rd & 5th only 6. Short phrases starting with any target note. 7. Short phrases starting with root (or 3rd, or 5th only) ... or however you want to do it. It’s important to challenge yourself to find notes quickly and improvise with them! WWW.JAMTRACKCENTRAL.COM

ARPEGGIOS If we take this idea to its natural conclusion, running through all the target notes for each chord, we get arpeggios. Exercise 3 is an arpeggio study based on the chord progression from the solo backing. There are 7 short exercises, but if you want a real challenge, try playing all of them in sequence! This doesn’t mean you have to start using wide sweep-picked arpeggios in every solo. It all depends on the context. The study in Exercise 3 is an intensive workout, but in the real world, you’d probably use an arpeggio as a cool feature in a solo, maybe to add melodic variety or to emphasise a particular chord change.

MAJOR PENTATONIC This masterclass is all about the major scale, but the major pentatonic is very closely related. VERY closely related... C major pentatonic: C D E G A See? CDEFGAB The notes of the major pentatonic are already contained in the major scale. You could describe the major pentatonic to be a subset of the major scale, rather than a separate scale. Remember what we said in the Beginner section? “Think of a scale as a recipe for a musical flavour.” The major pentatonic shares all of its notes with the major scale, but its character comes from the missing notes... the F (4th) and B (major 7th). Because of those missing notes, it has larger intervals between the remaining notes. On the next page are some fretboard diagrams to help you get the C major pentatonic under your fingers...

Again, don’t just try to learn all the shapes as one big exercise. Start with one shape and work with it for a while, maybe try playing over the solo backing track from this package or the “Lick Loop” backing from the Beginner section. Then, when you’re ready to learn the next shape, try moving between the two shapes. Exercise 4 (see separate Tab files and videos) will give you more of an intensive workout in the 5 pentatonic shapes.

EXERCISES Back in the Beginner section, the exercises were all about getting the scale patterns under your fingers, becoming familiar with the shape of the major scale. We’re going to do a little more of that, but then we’ll go further, covering the new concepts. This time, the exercise videos are split into small chunks to help you learn them. But for some serious practice, join them all together (like Ex1a-b-c-d-e-f-g, etc) for an extended workout! Exercise 1: We’re back to the 3-note-per-string scale shapes, working in two-string groups (see Beginner Ex1) but at a faster tempo. We’re now trying to move beyond simple box shapes, trying not to play right through from low to high (or high to low). A good way to achieve this is to force yourself to start lines from different points in a scale shape. Exercise 2: This is more like a melodic study than a technique exercise. For each part, we have a melodic line, mostly in 16th notes, but with the target notes as 8th notes. This is to show you how you might use target notes in real melody lines. We’re using a simplified version of the main solo backing track, and the target notes follow the chord progression. Also, each part of the exercise focuses on different target notes... Ex2a: root Ex2b: 3rd Ex2c: 5th Ex2d: root and 3rd (not always in that order) Ex2e: root and 5th (not always in that order) Ex2f: 3rd and 5th (not always in that order) Ex2g: All three target notes There’s also a bonus backing track for Exercise 2, so you can experiment with different target notes. This is a bit like the bonus “Lick Loop” backing in the Beginner section, but with chord changes. Exercise 3: This is a series of arpeggio studies, using the arpeggios of the four chords in the main solo backing (C, F, Am, G). We’re just dealing with the basic major and minor triads, so the arpeggios are constructed from the three target notes for each chord (root, 3rd, 5th).
