Film Title: The Magician’s Twin – CS Lewis and the Case Against Scientism

Guide Questions 1. What does the film concerns about? 

The concerns about the science and technology on our world, where they say that science as religion, science as credibility and science as power.

2. a. What is scientism? 

Scientism is excessive belief in the power of scientific knowledge and techniques.

b. How is scientism related to technology? 

Scientism is related to technology because as we science created new things it also used technology to function or to use it.

c. What CS Lewis against science? 

CS Lewis is against science because people could be corrupted or abuse, people pursue science because they want power all over the world, or in other people.

3. The video contends that science and technology may be gaining increasing control over our lives, potentially to the detriment of our society. Do you agree? Does this match your own observations and experiences? 

Yes I agree. Yes it is because as the technology evolve in every generation there are a possibility that the people above us might create an invention that will control our lives or our society.

4. According to the film, how is science being likened to a religion? What were examples in history that became cause for concern that the scientific method was being applied beyond its appropriate boundaries? 

Science being likened to a religion because of its evolution of the man that the science shows how a man evolve. Some examples in the history is the Reason Rally that happened in Washington, D.C in 2005 where there are 10 to 20 thousand people attended it that they ought science as a religion. And also the book the C.S Lewis created entitled “The Pilgrim’s Regress”

5. Science is supposed to promote critical thinking. According to the film, how might science actually be promoting credulous, gullible thinking? 

Science can actually be promoting credulous, gullible thinking because some of their invention might manipulate others that can harm them.

6. The film contends that much of modern science is about exerting power over the world. Is it a virtue/advantage or a liability/disadvantage? 

It is a virtue/advantage because aw we created science we created new things that people may be used. But also a liability/disadvantage because as a new invention is created we will just lay on it, or maybe some people will used it to have or to control the people in the society.

7. Why is the title of the film “The Magician’s Twin”? 

The film entitled “The Magician’s Twin” because C.S Lewis likened science as magic because of its creation and its capability in inventing something, just like magic that can make things with just a snap.

8. How do the main points of this video compare to those of “Village of the Watermills” 

This film shows how people live where science and technology are with them. Where religion, credibility and power is what science for them. In village in the watermills it shows how simply a life can be without science and technology with them.
