第 26 回浅草サンバカーニバル The Samba carnival has helped to create a new image for Asakusa, one of Tokyo’s most traditional towns. This spectacular carnival has grown to the point where it now represents the summer festival. Dancing teams from all over Japan take part in the festival, which is held in high repute by Brazilians, people who are of course from the home of samba — Brazil. Kabuki is one of the traditional Japanese forms of entertainment. A kabuki show performed by children will be held from September lst to 18th at the Edo Tokyo Museum sponsored by the NPO Association for the Traditional Performing Arts of Japan. Traditionally, only men are permitted to perform kabuki, but in this children’s performance, many girls take part. It is very interesting to see how the children speak the famous lines. Advanced tickets for S seats: Adult ¥3,000, Children ¥2,000. The Association runs a class for children wanting to experience kabuki, where they can learn about manners, vocal training, speaking lines, and so on.

This is a literal award for foreign students of Japanese. The manuscripts must be unpublished, but if the selection committee recognizes an already published manuscript, it can be subject to selection. Requirements are: (counting 400 characters per page) about 20 pages for a short story, 5 to 10 pages for an essay and three poems (in total less than 200 lines). Closing date: September 20, 2006. After selection by the committee in November, the winners will be announced in December on the website shown below. The requirements for applicants is that they are foreign students studying in Japan (including language schools students) and also those who have graduated within the last few years and are still in Japan. The winner will receive ¥300,000.

When and why did the pair start English OK? “In 2002, we saw a need to improve communication levels for service sector businesses to help make Japan a friendlier place to visit and live for foreigners,” Mori says. Mori and Beardsley soon realized that the communication ability of the hospitality industry in general was relatively low.

And lastly, they promote those businesses through a Web Directory, English OK! Mail Magazine, and PR consulting services.

“The reason was as much due to a lack of confidence as it was due to a lack of language ability,” Beardsley says. “Many Japanese people lacked the confidence to communicate with non-Japanese people and therefore didn’t even want to make the effort. In some cases, even if the foreigner spoke Japanese, the listener had already decided before starting the interaction that communication with the foreigner was not possible.” After much research and planning,, the pair established English OK! in 2004. “We see our business as a great support tool for initiatives to increase tourism such as the Yokoso! Japan program,” Mori says.

Since there were no existing materials to meet their needs for essential dialogues in different industries, the team decided to create their own. Mori and Beardsley initially did so by visiting various businesses and recording the situations and dialogues that commonly took place. Non-Japanese who stay in Japan for more than 90 days are required to register for an Alien registration card (officially called the “Certificate of Alien Registration”). This acts as an identification card and foreigners are required to carry it with them at all times. If you fail to do so, you may be penalized with a fine larger than the one imposed if you are not carrying your driver’s license. Many people hold the view that the registration of aliens is discriminatory. Gaikotsu founded “Tonchi Kyoukai Zassi” (Wit Association Magazine) in 1887 when he was 20 years old. In 1889, he created a satire about the constitution of the Empire of Japan which was far from being a democratic constitution. He published a “Wit Constitution Declaration Ceremony” illustration which is a parody of the Constitution Declaration Ceremony picture. It was a sarcastic illustration in which he drew a skeleton in place of the Emperor. In addition, he published a series of satirical ‘articles’ parodying the real Articles that make up the Constitution.

At that time, criticizing the Emperor was a dangerous act. Gaikotsu was accused of dishonoring the Emperor, and sentenced to three years in prison, charged a 100 yen fine and given a one year probation. However, he did not give up. In 1901 after his release, Gikotsu published the “Kokkei Shimbun” (Humor Newspaper) in Osaka. He used humor to point out the essence of key issues of the day including the tyranny of politicians and bureaucrats, the mass media that flatter them, and the people who support war. He received praise from the people.

While he criticized the injustices of police chiefs and dishonest businessmen over a long period in his paper, he made a point of attacking journalists who were acting in the interests of these people by calling them “blackmail journalists.” He was also severe on his relatives. As Gaikotsu implied, he was born to a tribe that was discriminated against. Gaikotsu was blamed by his relatives for being a great annoyance, but he refuted their claims by saying that their attitude was discrimination.

A peculiarity of the Japanese language is that it is rich in vocabulary and can express things in many different ways, while its grammar does not ask for strictness. “Watashi wa hon wo kai-masu” (I buy a book/books) is a sentence in the present tense. But it can be changed to the future tense by just adding a tense-representing word “ashita” (tomorrow), as in “Ashita watashi wa hon wo kaimasu.” Furthermore, the order of words is flexible except for the verb that comes at the end of sentences. You can say “Watashi wa ashita hon wo kai-masu,” “Hon wo watashi wa ashita kai-masu” and so on. A subject that is apparent is usually omitted. In the sentence “Ashita watashi wa hon wo kaimasu,” it is apparent to others who will buy the hon. So, “Watashi” is omitted and the sentence is usually expressed as “Ashita hon wo kai-masu.”

The scene looks like the room is being repaired. The audience stands still waiting for the performance to start. This is a play which defies expectations from beginning to end. The performance moves through three different rooms as the scenes change. There are no chairs anywhere, so it is up to the audience to decide where they watch from, but sometimes there are scenes where the audience joins in the story. Quin emphasizes, “We place more importance on the fun and entertainment aspects rather than the meaning of the work.” Meanwhile Kaori says, “You can say that we deliberately give the audience something to chew on. It seemed that they may have been trying to assert some kind of philosophical agenda; but when asked, the three replied that they are not religious, and they don’t want to be pinned down to any specific ideology. み かみ

Difference in audience reaction What are audiences saying about their performances? “Each audience reacts in a very different way. Some become very remote and quiet, and some join in with such energy. NonJapanese seem to respond more readily to the performances,” says Kaori. Perhaps this is further evidence of the shy character of the Japanese people. However, the actors are careful never to force the audience to join in against their will.

The group’s plays are performed in Japanese and English, and Makiko says that creating bilingual dialogue is difficult. “We alternate between Japanese and English, but we try not to make one a literal translation of the other. It is more like having conversations in both languages at the same time; I believe that the audience can follow the story by the atmosphere. The couple lived in Paris for four years where they had an apartment and Jean had a good job. “But we couldn’t imagine having children in Paris, because there are too many problems and not enough security,” Jean says. After getting married in April 2004 and spending a year discussing their future, they finally decided to leave France and try to build a family in Tokyo. ふ た り

When Jean visited a nightspot in Tokyo’s foreigner-friendly party town of Roppongi one Saturday night during his visit, he met Yuri, a woman who would later become his wife. The pair met again for dinner, and after three more dates, they made a decision to meet again in France after he returned. Yuri then visited Jean in Paris in December, then, two months later, he went to Japan where he met Yuri’s family before she packed her bags and moved to France the following month to be with him. ど よう び

After the couple moved to Japan in 2006, the main problem was Jean finding a job. “I’m not a perfect Japanese speaker, and in France, I worked as a TV technician. It’s not so easy to find something like that in Japan, especially for a person with my background. After five months, the problem remained.” Even though his Japanese kept improving and Yuri quickly found a good position, they were not able to live on their own, so they decided to stay with her family until Jean could find a serious job. Jean initially intended to teach

What is the best aspect about being in an international relationship? “It is that if we learn a new way of life, a new culture, it helps us a lot to understand our own culture too,” Jean says. “When I discovered Japan and her culture, I could compare, think, and realize that there are many ways to do the same thing all over the world.” こくさいけっこん

What advice can the couple give to readers about relationships like theirs? “There is a solution to every problem. Also, being with someone from another culture can be quite dangerous. It’s always very charming to discover somebody who is different both physically and mentally. But it’s necessary to be mind-opened, tolerant, and very patient in order to make it work.” かれ

While most international couples only have two languages on their radar screens, Jean and Yuri have three. “Another problem,” Jean says, “was that when we met, we had to speak in English. But we both wanted to cut off this foreign language. So when we lived in France, Yuri started from the very beginning to learn French. We spoke in English for less than a year. Now, she works and it’s my turn to learn her language and build a new career.”

The other day, an old man in a jacuzzi bath scolded kids who entered the bath. There is a precaution sign board at the entrance saying that the depth of the bath is 110 cm and that kids less than 130 cm high should not enter. Nevertheless, the kids entered one after the other. The old man repeatedly scolded them. This kind of scene is very rarely seen in daily life these days. It used to be a part of Japanese culture that adults scolded kids who did something wrong, even if the kids were not their children. “If I compare Japanese food with Italian food, they both rely on fresh ingredients and the natural tastes of the fresh ingredients. So when you eat Japanese food, you know what you are eating. A fish looks like a fish, an aubergine looks like an aubergine and a pepper looks like a pepper. The Japanese say ‘the best cooking is the least cooking.’ So the role of the chef is simply to bring out the natural taste of the ingredients. Shirley became more interested in the relationship between food and spirituality, and studied ‘shojin ryori,’ Zen Vegetarian Cuisine, at a Buddhist temple “Sanko-in” (in Tokyo). She also started a good friendship with a Buddhist priest who belongs to the “Daitoin” temple (Chiba) and his wife KIMURA Hitomi. She visited them and cooked with the wife at weekends. In the

In 2004, Shirley edited and wrote the introduction to ‘Harumi’s Japanese Cooking’ written by the wellknown Japanese TV chef KURIHARA Harumi, which also won a prize at the World Cookbook Awards in 2005.

IIMORI Yumiko, who lives in Suginami-ku, Tokyo, launched a website “Nurie-ya-san” in February 2005. You can download original pictures from this site for free. They are not only for adults, but also for children, and they include pictures that you can play with.
