JAM OF THE MONTH Track
‘FALLEN IDOL’
from Justin Derrico’s ‘Classic Rock Sessions’
JTC SAYS This track is in D minor, and the presence of the Bb5 chord makes it specifically Aeolian (D E F G A Bb C). You can also use the minor pentatonic (D F G A C) and Justin often extends this to the blues scale by adding the flat 5th (Ab). For a temporary contrast, he moves to A Dorian (A B C D E F# G) over the Am chord in measure 14. Scroll down for the full chord chart.

It's the perfect environment for the D minor pentatonic (D F G A C) which you could extend into a blues scale (D F G Ab A C) by adding the flat 5th.

D riff... You can quite easily continue using the D minor pentatonic or blues scale... as it lands on the new chords, it'll simply create a whole new load of melodic possibilities. When the first progression repeats, the last line is replaced with a single measure of E minor, and then we get this 3rd progression... Dm Cadd9 Fadd9

Keep using that D minor pentatonic - it'll serve you well!
