JAM OF THE MONTH Track
‘Altered Reality’
from The Oracle’s ‘Rut Busting Licks’
JTC SAYS ALTERED REALITY Altered chords are usually dominant chords (E7, B9, F13, etc) which have either the 5th or 9th raised or lowered a half-tone. That gives 7#9, 7b9, 7#5 and 7b5. Sometimes, the 7#11 is also included as an altered chord. They’re cool-sounding chords, but how do you solo over them? One of the best scales to use is the Superlocrian, which is the 7th mode of the melodic minor. In this solo, the Oracle uses A natural minor (Aeolian) for all the Am9 and Dm9 chords (which are not altered) and E Superlocrian for the E7#9 chords (which are sometimes played as E7#9#5). A Aeolian - A B C D E F G E Superlocrian - E F G Ab Bb C D You’ll notice that there’s also a Bb7#11 chord in there. The usual choice for this chord is the Lydian Dominant, but don’t worry... the notes of Bb Lydian Dominant are exactly the same as E Superlocrian, but using Bb as the root!
