• NAME OF THE PROJECT : NATIONAL CENTRE FOR BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES, BANGALORE • CATEGORY : RESEARCH INSTITUTE BUILDING • ARCHITECT : RAJ REWAL , ABRD ARCHITECTS, MISTRY ARCHITECTS AND SANJAY KANVINDE

LOCATION

APPROACH:  Approach to the NCBS is from 2 sides along.  the road is 2way road with width 9 mts wide.

 The site surroundings contains residential layout.

Case Study 1:National Centre For Biological Sciences, Bangalore The National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS), located in Bangalore is a part of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, under the Department of Atomic Energy. The institute’s research focus is the frontier areas of biology. Their research areas range from the study of single molecules to ecology and evolution. The NCBS campus is located in the Gandhi Krishi Vigyan Kendra (GKVK), on Bellary Road, in the north of Bangalore. The 20 acre campus with lush greenary has accommodation for students, visitors and faculty. THE CAMPUS CONSISTS : 1. ADMINISTRATION BUILDING 2. EASTERN LABROTRIES 3. SOUTHER LABROTRIES 4. Case Study 1:National Centre For Biological Sciences, Bangalore ADMIN BLOCK /EASTERN BLOCK

The research laboratories function around surroundings and provide ample space for interaction among the scientist. The aim of design was to locate various functions in such a manner that it would look complete and humorur in all respects yet and flexibility for further expansion. Inter-linked courtyards surrounded by laboratories and classroom . The maximum natural diffused light was used. The informal spaces(balcony) are provided in front of each laboratories.

Balcony is facing towards courtyard. All the service lines were hidden in perforated ducts. Cetronela was used near courtyard to avoid insects.

Case Study 1:National Centre For Biological Sciences, Bangalore SOUTHERN BLOCK The southern laboratory building is organized such that shared resources/ interactive spaces are located on the northern side. Large deck for outdoor functions, food court, exhibitions and lectures is located under pilotis on first floor. This provides interaction opportunities so critical for the scientific endeavour. The ground Floor has the 200 Seater Lecture Theatre, Spectrometry facility while the second floor has Lecture theatres, Library and Faculty Lounge. The open laboratories are located on the south side separated by a large atrium. The support facilities and services risers surround the labs on three sides connected by a service corridor which ensures unhindered and undisturbed access for maintenance and servicing of labs. the colonnade space was used for exhibition and informal learning . The libaray was facing toward landscape.

Case Study 1:National Centre For Biological Sciences, Bangalore INSTEM CAMPUS The instem laboratory building is organized such that shared resources/ interactive spaces are located inside the autrium. The open laboratories are located towards atrium The support facilities and services risers surround the labs on three sides connected by a service corridor which ensures unhindered and undisturbed access for maintenance and servicing of labs. The autrium space was used for exhibition and informal learning . The service floor height is 2.3mts with a beams of 70cm . The clearance height was 1.7mts

INFERENCE  Access to site is linear without obstructions.

 The pedestrian path and vehicular movement is nicely segregated.  Pores pavements used to recharge ground water table.  Important areas(research lab, library ) are easily accessible.

 The concept is based on Jaisalmer.  All the service lines are hidden in perforated ducts
