Beading Think Tank ... Dear Beaders, It is truly a pleasure to bring you this issue of

Perlen Poesie. Our autumn issue is just bulging with beautiful designs and interesting information. You will find the glamorous, the definitive and the romantic: earrings, brooches, bracelets, necklaces and pendants. This time, as well, we present you with a varied artistic ensemble: our contributing designers stem from India, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Israel and more – each with a delightfully different style. Bead artist Nadya Gerber has a special gift: the impressions you get from natural landscapes hold a special fascination for her – which she then skillfully implements in her jewelry design. You can read about her beginning on page 10. And her autumnally-inspired necklace with its reddish-gold ears of grain will surely inspire you. Perhaps you would like to learn a new technique? Beginning on page 20 we feature the Diamond Weave (DW) pattern developed by Gerlinde Lenz. It has very special advantages, boasting a multitude of uses and possible variations; illustrated in Cath Thomas’ Faraday bracelet on page 80. ®

And now a look into the future: Grab your calendar and make a note of the date of the next BEADERS BEST 2018 Bead Art-Crossover Fair. See page 22 for more information. It will be a top class 4-day international event with wonderful possibilities! Until then, I hope you enjoy browsing through and doing the projects.

M

onika Müllner, a native of Vienna, Austria, is an enthusiast of bead making, chain maille and wirework. Since her youth, she has harbored a passion for the historical and the archaeological. Not far from her home in Lower Austria lies Carnuntum – a former Roman legionary fortress with a civilian town.

After a long economic upturn, the town (which at its height boasted a population of 50,000) was abandoned by its Roman inhabitants during the fifth century. Extensive excavations and finds eventually led to it becoming an archaeological park with an attached museum. The artisan produces replicas of the Roman artefacts. (Facebook: Monika Müllner)

“Dreams of Japan”: the out of the ordinary shoulder collar was created for the “Battle of the Beadsmith” competition in 2015. From the artist: “Japan – the land of the rising sun – a country of rich culture. Here, the season of the cherry blossom is celebrated, standing for beauty, mortality and the transience of life. The best beads come from here. One day I have to travel there!”

“Under the Tuscan Sun” (Bead Dreams competition 2017) 2nd Place in the category “Seed Beads”: “I was inspired by the fascinating landscapes of Tuscany, with its unique colors, the cozy houses hidden in the olive groves. In the distance you see the pyramid-like cypresses. In the fields, the red poppy thrusts itself up through the young wheat to greet the spring sunshine. With its bright scarlet, one can recognize the queen of the wild field from afar.”

Mood Catcher For years the artist has achieved top positions in international beaded jewelry competitions. No wonder, as her designs are sophisticated, unusual and three-dimensional. ‡ Perlen Poesie ‡ 34 ‡ 2017 ‡

“Faithfulness”: The collar, which depicts a female (left, with two cygnets – baby swans) and a male (right) swan, was designed for the Bead Dreams contest in 2017 and was awarded the 3rd place in the category "Crystal". The artist: "I want to share my feelings with my works. The necklace is dedicated to the value of the family. Mated swans are faithful for a lifetime. In some languages, like Russian, for example, the word swan stands for "faithfulness". The white color and the crystals stand for purity. I got the idea when I visited my parents in the house where I was born. They have been together for over 40 years."

he developed her affinity for glass during her vocational training in Gus-Khrustalny (literally translated: Crystal Goose) in Russia, a center of glass production and processing. She enthusiastically told us what glass looks like under a microscope: “You see that it is made of crystal-like shapes. While quartz (a basic material) is a real crystal whose atoms are lattice-shaped, the atomic structure of quartz glass consists of irregularly-arranged tetrahedra, which themselves also look distorted (versus uniform). One sees a certain order in the disorder – one could also formulate it in reverse. The basic structure of glass is, in principle, the same as that of crystals, with the same bonds and basic building blocks - but it is more like a network. And one sees gradual transitions from one k crystal-like structure to another.”

“I see friendly competition among artists as being fruitful. You learn from and stimulate each other, yet no one will exactly duplicate another’s work.”

T

he skilled glass technician doesn’t only have technical understanding, but also a courageous and creative side. Her mother was a mathematics teacher, her grandmother and great-grandmother instructed her in needlework. Nadya has masterfully combined elements made from seed beads with leather, wire mesh, crystals, toy figures and whatever else she feels like – she’s even used a phonograph record (“Legendary Marlene”, 1st Place at the IBA 2013). Bead embroidery is most often used for the creation of the basic idea, while additional elements in other beading techniques make the works light and airy. Her preferred stitches are herringbone and peyote. “Competitions are a source of inspiration: a theme is given – what can I do with it? I have become bolder and have achieved success with the unusual. Through competitions I can make my works known.” k

N

adya‘s larger designs look like “consciously arranged disorder”: her compositions are freestyle, never symmetrical (“too boring”). They delight the eye, are harmonious – you never get tired of looking at them. We asked her: “Do you have any special method or procedure?” Her answer: “I continually teach myself things – I borrow books from the Düsseldorf University Library on color theory, mathematical theories of design such as the golden ratio and also stylistic eras. They influence me. I don‘t want to stagnate – but rather further develop myself.” What inspires Nadya? “For a time, I was inspired by a technically abstract style and steampunk elements, but then I was seized by the Art Nouveau fever – I’m talking Mucha, Gustav Klimt, the Viennese Secession (Editor’s Note: Alphons Maria Mucha, a poster artist, graphic artist, illustrator and painter born in Prague in 1839; Gustav Klimt was a painter born in 1862 near Vienna, he is known for his geometrical-spiral lines and his mosaic-like patterns in gold, silver and vibrant colors; the Viennese Secession was an art movement founded by Klimt in 1897, a Viennese association of visual artists who rejected the conservative definition of art, creating the Viennese version of Art Nouveau). I love the flowing lines, floral ornaments as well as geometric forms of Art Nouveau. Lately, I’ve been letting myself be inspired by nature (“The Muse”, “Under the Tuscan Sun”, “Blowball”) and city tours (her k handbag “Amsterdam. Van Gogh. Irises”).”

our works range from small to very large, even reaching across the chest, shoulders and back. Isn’t that uncomfortable to wear?” “But no,” she assures us, “my big necklaces lie naturally on the shoulders and don’t slide around.” How does that work? “Well, I always start with the clasp - from it, the individual elements are joined together. I test it on a bust and work on it until everything is in balance. In addition to this rather technical feature, it‘s also important to me to put into my works what has touched me, the atmosphere of enchanting natural sights, such as the blossoming cherry branches in Japan, the Tuscan fields, the summer meadows full of blowballs. Therefore, twisted twigs, grasses, flowers, ears of grain flutter easily with every movement. I’ve received

19

such beautiful feedback for my work ‘Under the Tuscan Sun’, such as, ‘oh, that reminds me of my home, the Kazakh steppe, it looks so similar’.” “At the BEADERS BEST Bead Art Fair in 2017 we saw once again how popular your courses are. How often do you give workshops?” “I quite often give them in German bead shops. I also receive invitations from abroad, but since I am employed full-time alongside my artistic hobby and am married with two teenage boys, I don’t want to overdo it, but want to preserve my freedom and joy, and yet continue to create something exceptional. Still, I do like to do teaching, especially the basic techniques for elements that can be put together afterwards, according to personal tastes.” Many thanks, Nadya! Andrea Ott v

Simple elegance A simple, elegant bracelet with straight lines and smooth edges – this was requested and resulted in the Diamond Weave, which we now present to you.

20

T

he basic element added with every building stitch is a diamond consisting of 4 beads. An unusal feature of this bead weaving stitch ist that forward rows (Building Rows) differ from return rows (Stabilising Rows). In the building row, the beads for the new diamonds are picked up and connected to the diamonds in the previous row. In the stabilizing row, the new diamonds are closed and connected to their neighbors at their sides. The fabric grows very quickly. Additional beads within and between the diamonds can greatly alter the appearance and widen or lengthen the individual stitch. They form the basis for the variations. The project “Faraday” on page 80 by Cath Thomas shows the use of beads between the diamonds.

Interesting to know: The beads are placed at right angles to each other in both the diamond weave (DW) and RAW (right angle weave). In RAW, the thread path within the beads runs either parallel or at right angles to the working direction. In DW, the thread path runs diagonally to the working direction. The rows of beads here lie parallel to the working direction, while they lie diagonally to the working direction in RAW. Thus DW produces a fabric with smooth edges, while the edges of RAW often receive an extra row of beads to smooth them.

orientation: the first diamond is shown on the upper left. Your piece may be rotated while working, but use the same orientation when comparing it to the illustration. With every diamond added, two rows and two columns of beads are increased. The project by Cath Thomas shows the option of adding single rows and columns.

Materials Use transparent beads to learn the weave, so the thread path will be clearly visible: bicones, round or firepolished glass beads. The thread may be quite thick, as the only time more than two threads enAbout the instructions Illustrations 1 to 8 show the basic ter into a bead is when one is being seform of Diamond Weave. Use a stop only use beads with just one thread already in them. bead to secure the thread. Leave a starting thread of about 15 cm (6“), so 1 2 3 you can additionally secure the beginning and the end by knotting them before you finish them off. 5

5 Pick up the next diamond and anchor it to the diamond above. Repeat this step for all of the other diamonds, up through and including the next to the last diamond.

A. Beginning row

1

1 Pick up 4 beads and slide them in right next to the stop bead. Close the beads into a circle by passing once more through the first two beads. You have your first diamond.

2 Repeat step 1 for all the diamonds in this first row of diamonds. Slide them right next to each other.

3 Only in the last diamond of the beginning row you also pass through the third bead – to step up to the next row of diamonds.

2

5

6 For the last diamond of the building row, pick up 4 beads, slide them right next to the existing beads and pass through the first newly added bead, to create a closed diamond. This diamond is connected to the diamond above it with just 1 thread. (A 2nd connection will be made when you get to the end of working the piece). The new diamonds are still somewhat loose and will become tighter in the next step. Note: The left edge of the piece, where the diamonds are connected by only one thread, remains an “open edge” until the end (diamonds 1, 6, 9 in Fig. 8). The right edge (diamonds 3, 4, 7 in Fig. 8) is in contrast a “closed edge”.

Now pass through the left beads of the left diamonds, until the end and starting threads (without the stop beads) can be knotted together. Sew the thread ends into the woven fabric, secure and trim. Tip: If you use too high of a tension, the fabric might become uneven (wavy). This can be counteracted by therading around a diamond here and there with a distance of several diamonds between each time. If, however, you want to draw the edges deliberately closer together, you should work around the whole piece with the same tension. D. The final row and closing the open edge

7 Continue through the upper beads of the diamonds in the building row to the closededge as seen in the diagram. The stabilizing row firmly connects the diamonds with each other. Note: When connecting, make sure that the threads don’t cross; otherwise the beaded fabric will become uneven. Further rows of diamonds will be attached and stabilized in the same way (steps 4, 5, 6, 7). ‡ Perlen Poesie ‡ 34 ‡ 2017 ‡

The Bead Art Fair

BEADERS BEST +++ April 5 – 8, 2018 ++ 2

Concept update on 15,000 m

For the first time in Europe – 3 creative trade fairs combined in one exhibition hall. As everyone knows: Glass beads are used in classical jewelry design, in fashion jewelry and in the works of jewelry hobbyists. Consequently, the BEADERS BEST Bead Art Fair has now found its natural place: together with the Kreativ-Messe (Creative Fair) and the Mineralien-Messe (Minerals, Fossils, Jewellery Exhibition) in the large new Exhibition Hall 10 at the Messegelände (Trade Fair Grounds) in Stuttgart, Germany. Many elements and techniques are combined in modern creations: glass beads, cabochons, silk ribbons, jewelry wires, chain maille rings and other handicraft components are brought together to create wearable treasures. These components as well as the know-how for how to use them are available at the fair!

22

Professional designers, jewelry shop owners, hobbyists, lovers of individually-crafted unique jewelry, lampwork bead artists, and even occupational therapists will find everything they need in one exhibition hall at the BEADERS BEST and the neighboring Creative Fair and Minerals, Fossils, Jewellery Exhibition. The unique concept is ideally suited to inspire your creativity! As is our tradition, the BEADERS BEST location – with its lounge atmosphere – invites you to experience its relaxed manner while buying your supplies, exchanging information and learning new things. Workshops on jewelry-making techniques and designs can be booked in advance or spontaneously taken. National and international artists lend their knowledge and present their works. On the first day of the fair, “The Night of the Senses” begins at 6.00 pm, with the “Tutors’ Reception”, where you are able to meet and mix with the workshop artists. We cordially invite you to enjoy this event together with us. Details for exhibitors are available on the website at the end of September. Workshop offers can already be uploaded here: www.perlen-poesie/beaders-best/workshops

Beaded paintings

Beaded Treasure discovered

From dancing to beaded paintings

J

oin us on a journey of discovery to an extraordinary collection, a magnificent overall composition, in which velvet and beads play the main roles. You look at paintings, furniture and textile accessories embroidered with millions of beads. You see a window framed by thick, floor-length velvet drapes in a slightly bluish-green, crowned by a velvet border in magenta, embellished with lush flowering vines composed of trimmings embroidered with tiny beads. On a bed lies a spread of the same green velvet, as well as a red neck roll, and again trimmings with a lush embroidery of beads. Then a settee, also covered with green velvet,

surrounded with beaded tassels, and further a footstool covered in red and green velvet with beaded embroidery trimmings. Your gaze falls on a tall, wooden panel screen. Each of the five 70-cm-wide (28”) panels has a 1-meter-high (39”), oval of an abundance of beaded flowers (the screen alone contains an estimated 850,000 beads). And now you discover the bead-embroidered fireplace screen and marvel at the bead-embroidered borders surrounding the large mirror.

n the white walls hang framed paintings – not in oil or watercolor, but three-dimensional – like pastures “painted in beads”. They are not merely embroidered next to one another, but superimposed on each other, peeking out – mostly bouquets of flowers, some solitary and delicate, others in lavish abundance, as spring, summer or autumn bouquets. “Painting” is the right term here: light, shade, hues, depth, leaves are laid out in shadings of green, the individual flowers consist of light to dark (bead) tones – you can see the flower head through to its base. Dorothea Therese Plenhart, born 1924 in Gda´nsk-Ohra (then a free state with mainly German-speaking population, now part of Poland), is the creator. Even as a little girl she had loved to play with beads and buttons, had embroidered the clothes for her doll. She also studied tap dancing and ballet. During the war she had dance engagements on the stages in Hanover, Gottingen, Bochum and Donaueschingen (all in Germany). At the end of the Second World War she returned to the bombed-out Gdansk to bring the family to the West, was persecuted politically and even imprisoned for a while. Financial compensation and reparation for that time finally took place some decades later. For the time being she stayed in Poland, learning the language, earned a Diplom [a European university degree] as a choreographer and trained the Polish National Ballet, for which she also designed and embroidered costumes. After a brief marriage she left Poland, as many did at that time, with her small daughter. Again in Bochum, Germany, she opened her ballet school in the 1960s. Through an accident on stage at a young age she suffered a knee injury that

never healed properly, and which hindered her in free dance movements. But she concentrated on what she could do: she designed choreographies for floor gymnasts, tournament dancers and figure skaters, organized ballet matinees, and designed costumes for the performances at the festivals, such as the Ruhr Theater Festival in Recklinghausen, Germany [the largest and most famous in Europe].

A

t the end of the 60s, she followed her new life partner to ‘s-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands. Being a person of strong willpower and discipline, Dorothea Therese was infused with the desire to be artistically active. She returned to a medium in which physical strength played no role: the world of glass beads. Flowers and gardens – including her own – were things she had always loved; she often visited the flower gardens on the island of Mainau in Lake Constance. Under her label “Dorothy Hart – Fine Art” she designed jewelry, offered courses, even published several small instructional booklets in Dutch. And she embroidered and embroidered – until she had created a complete “beaded room”. Tirelessly, she bought beads and beading threads (from Gütermann), needles, felt, velvet and picture frames. As early as 1989, she had recognized that craftsmanship in general and specifically embroidery with beads was, for her, meditative, relaxing and a mental safe haven from our hectic times.

55

In 2015 the inexhaustible artist died at the age of 90. Her œuvre (life’s works) – about 40 paintings, the abovementioned room, jewelry and decorative articles – were only “discovered” after her death. Dorothea Therese Plenhart’s three-dimensional beaded painting deserves recognition and a worthy place where it can be displayed in all its beauty Andrea Ott Editor’s Note: If you have ideas and/or suggestions concerning where this collection could be located, exhibited or are interested in purchase, please write to editors@ perlen-poesie.com, we will immediately forward your E-Mail to the artist’s daughter. Knowledge in brick stitch is required (see course in Perlen Poesie 9). 1 Complete pattern: You will start with ladder stitch with the row marked in red. You will continue with brick stitch progressing from both sides. The black beads of the borders of the color areas will be worked with gold-colored cb.

2 2 Cut 1.5 m (60˝) of thread and thread a needle. Pick up 2 cb and again pass through both beads in the circle, arranging them side by side at the same time. To reinforce retrace the thread path. Tip: Start the work piece with a thread of 3 m (3.3 yards) and wind 1 half of it onto a flexible bobbin. You can later use this thread for the 2nd half of the leaf without adding a new thread.

3 3 Pick up 1 cb, pass through the cb the thread exited from and string the new cb in a circle (= ladder stitch). Retrace the thread path.

5 5 2nd row: Pick up 1 cb and pass under the thread bridge over the underlying beads. Pass back through the new cb.

4 4 According to the previous step connect a total of 14 cb in ladder stitch. Do not forget to retrace to reinforce! Then follow the pattern illustration and attach 3 sb in light pink, 9 cb, 3 sb in green and 2 cb in ladder stitch. The first row is finished (= base).

77

6 6 Pick up 1 cb and pass under the thread bridge between the underlying beads. Pass back through the new cb (= brick stitch).

7 7 Complete the row in brick stitch according to the pattern. At the end of the row, add more cb with ladder stitches. Work the 1st half of the leaf in brick stitch, chosing the colors according to the pattern and if needed increase or decrease the number of beads. Start from the base and add the 2nd half of the leaf. Make a loop out of cb on the back of the leaf stalk as shown. Secure the threads and trim. Pull a chain of your choice through the hanger loop.

Diamond Weave

Starting row 1 Cut 3 m (3.3 yard) of thread and thread a needle. Attach a stop bead in the middle of the thread. If needed wind the thread left hanging on a flexible bobbin (if available) for later usage. Pick up 4 cb-a and close them into a circle by passing through 2 cb-a again (= 1st diamond shape).

2

3

2 Pick up 1 bg and 4 cb-a. Push the beads close to the previous diamond and again pass through the 1st and 2nd cb-a of this step in the same direction (= 2nd diamond).

5

5 Pick up 1 bg, 1 cb-a, 1 cb-b, 1 cb-a and 1 bg and according to the diagram pass through the 1st and 4th cb-a of the last diamond of the previous row. * Pick up 1 bg and pass through the 1st and 4th cb-a of the next diamond. Repeat from * twice.

7

7 Repeat step 4, with the last repeat pass forward to and through the 1 bg only.

10

4

3 Repeat step 2 twice. Pass forward through the 3rd cb-a of the last diamond.

6

Stabilizing row 6 Pick up 1 bg, 1 cb-a, 1 cb-b, 1 cb-a and 1 bg and pass through the 3rd cb-a of the last diamond of the 1st row, the following cb-b and the 1st and 2nd cb-a of the 1st diamond of this row as shown in the diagram. Tip: If you like your bracelet longer or shorter work more or fewer rows with vertical cb-b (+/- 4 mm, steps 4–6) and/or more or fewer rows with vertical bg (+/- 6 mm, step 11) as shown in the diagram. To design the bracelet geometrically make these alterations on both sides of the middle. Keep in mind that the bracelet will end up slightly shorter after the outer beads are passed through once more.

8

Further rows 8 Pick up 1 cb-a, 1 cb-b, 1 cb-a and 1 bg; according to the diagram pass through the 1st and 4th cb-a of the last diamond of the previous row. * Pick up 1 bg and pass through the 1st and 4th cb-a of the next diamond. Repeat from * twice. Pick up 1 bg, 1 cb-a, 1 cb-b, 1 cb-a and pass through the next bg and through 4 cb as shown in the diagram.

11

Building row 4 Pick up 1 cb-b and 4 cb-a and pass back through the cb-b. Pass through the 4th cb-a of the diamond passed through last, 1 bg and the 3rd cb-a of the following diamond. Keep the thread tension high. Repeat this step twice. Pick up 1 cb-b and 4 cb-a, pass back through the cb-b and through the 4th cb-a of the diamond passed through last. Tip: There is no problem if the added stalked diamonds twist while you continue working but there should be no visible thread left in the end.

9

9 Repeat step 7 but replace the 1 cb-b with 1 fb each time.

81

12

10 Repeat step 8 passing correspondingly through the fb. 11 Repeat step 7, replacing 1 cb-b with 1 bg each time. Repeat step 8 passing correspondingly through the bg. Repeat for a total of 3 rows. Tip: This row will add up to a height of 6 mm, important for the adjustments of length (explained in step 6).

14 Pick up a set of (1 bg and 1 cb-a) three times. Pick up 1 half of the clasp through the 1st loop and pass through the bg the thread exited from. Pass through 2 cb-a, 1 bg and 1 cb-a as shown in the diagram. Pick up a pattern of (1 bg and 1 cb-a) twice. Pass through the 2nd loop of the clasp. Pass through 1 bg as shown in the diagram.

17

15 Pass forward through 1 cb-a, 1 bg, 2 cb-a, 1 bg and 1 cb-a. Pick up a pattern of (1 bg and 1 cb-a) twice. Pass through the next loop of the clasp. Pass through 1 bg as shown in the diagram. Repeat this step two more times. At the end, pass forward to and through the cb-a on the outer edge.

18

16 Pass through 1 bg toward the clasp. Skip the cb-a at the corner. Pass forward through (1 bg and 2 cb-a) four times. Continue through 1 bg. Skip the cb-a at the corner and pass forward through some beads on the longitudinal edge. Remove the needle, leave the thread hanging. 17 Continue to work with the thread left hanging (possibly unwind the bobbin first). Remove the stop bead, thread a needle. Pass upward starting at the green marker according to pattern (the part below it already exists): Work 1 row according to steps 7 and 8, 1 row according to steps 12 and 13, 3 rows according to steps 7 and 8, 1 row according to steps 9 and 10 with fb, 1 row according to steps 7 and 8. The row in the middle of the bracelet (dotted blue line): repeat step 4 but instead of 1 cb-b insert 1 fb, 1 cp-4 and 1 fb each time. Repeat step 8, pass through the fb and cp-4 accordingly. Finish the 2nd half of the bracelet in reversed order. 18 At the end, pass through the beads on the edges with the remaining thread, to reinforce pass once more through the last rows where the halves of the clasp are fastened in. Secure the threads with some half hitch knots between the beads and trim. Tip: The designer recommends to stitch through a diamond every now and then to distribute the thread tension. Also push the cb-b and the bg on the edge slightly to ‘click’ them in place.

To Catch A Crystal continues 88

From the Beading Think Tank: Editor Silke Steuernagel has created ingenious bezels for the challenging new crystal shapes.

I

n February of 2017 Swarovski surprised us all with a few new Fancy Stone shapes. They are asymmetric or ‘distorted’ crystals: the Tilted Dice, Tilted Chaton and Tilted Spike. We’ll show you how you can bezel the first two with seed beads. Also new is the Baroque Mirror, with a bezel of its own. The basic technique is RAW (Right Angle Weave), so that as much of the surface of the crystal as possible remains visible. First, the bezel for the popular Swarovski Rivoli #1122 12mm will be explained, and then you’ll find the instructions for the Swarovski Baroque Mirror. We recommend that you attempt the last two sets of instructions only after you’ve practiced the basic technique. Both are quite challenging: the outside edges of both the Swarovski Tilted Chaton and the Swarovski Tilted Dice are neither even nor are they uniform. (The crystals are from www.modastrass.com)

A. Basis technique 1 RAW Unit: Pick up 1 cb11, 1 sb15, 1 dr, 1 sb15, 1 cb11, 1 sb15, 1 dr and 1 sb15 and close clockwise into a circle by passing again through the cb11 picked up first. Tip: Secure the end of the thread by wrapping it twice around the index finger of the non-dominant hand or attach a stop bead.

4 Work the 3rd RAW unit and the stabilizing round according to step 3 in the clockwise direction.

2 Stabilizing round: Continue working in clockwise direction. Pass forward through the 1st sb15, skip the dr and pass through the 2nd sb15, skip the following cb11 and pass through the 3rd sb15, skip the next dr and pass through the 4th sb15. Continue working another half round by skipping the cb11, pass through the 1st sb15, skip the dr and pass through the 2nd sb15 and the following cb11. Tighten the thread slightly. It’s important that all of the skipped beads (cb11 and dr) point outwards; you can use an embossing tool or sewing needle to pull them into the correct position (pointing outwards). Tighten the thread until you hear or sense a light click, the first RAW element is finished. Now check to see whether the piece you are working looks like the one in the top picture. You should have small, stable RAW units.

5 Continue working according to steps 3 and 4 until you have reached the desired number of RAW units (please refer to the corresponding instruction details for the exact number of units). Finish the round by picking up 1 sb15, 1 dr and 1 sb15 and passing through the cb11 at the beginning of the band; make sure not to twist the band! Pick up 1 sb15, 1 dr and 1 sb15 and close into a circle by passing through the cb11 that this step started from. Work a stabilizing round according to step 2. At the end, go forward to and through the 1st vertical dr on the upper edge.

6 According to the respective instruction details, insert beads (cb15, sb11), between the dr on the upper edge. Tighten the thread, pushing this round inwards; it will later lie on the top of the crystal being bezeled. Pass through the round several times.

7 Exiting a dr, pass through 1 sb15, 1 cb11, 1 sb15 and 1 dr.

8 According to the instruction details, insert beads between the dr all around. After working the last bead, insert the crystal and tighten the thread. Pass through the round several times. 5 Back: Turn the piece over. Go forward to and through the dr lying crosswise as shown. According to step 8 of the basic technique, insert the following beads between the dr all around: 2 cb15, 1 sb11 (=along the edge of the 1st corner projecting forward), 2 cb15 twice, 1 cb15 and 1 sb11 (= along the 2nd corner projecting backward), 2 cb15 four times, 1 sb11 and 1 cb15 (3rd corner of the crystal projecting backward), 2 cb15 twice, 1 sb11 (=along the edge of the 4th corner projecting forward), and three times 2 cb15. Go forward to and through the sb11 on the 2nd corner projecting backward.

6 Pick up 10 cb15 and turn through the sb11 lying diagonally and opposite on the 3rd corner projecting backward as shown in the diagram. Pass back through the cb15 and through the sb11 that this step started from. Tighten the thread firmly, thereby sliding the bezel on the 2nd and 3rd corners toward the back so that it lies well over the corners. Repeat the thread path through the 10 cb15, if needed, for stabilization. Pass again through the cb15 on the outer edge. Secure the thread and trim. Silke Steuernagel

39 Cabochon bezel: Cut a piece of felt with an allowance of about 2.5 cm (1˝) around the 1st cabochon. Very lightly coat the back of the cabochon with all-purpose adhesive, adhere it in the middle and let it dry. Cut 1 m (40˝) of thread, thread a needle and secure it in the felt on the back. Stitch to the front directly beside the cabochon. Pick up 2 sb11-f, slide them toward the work piece and directly behind them stitch through to the back. Stitch to the front between the sb11-, pass through the 2nd sb11-f.

42

37 To reinforce the ear pass through all rounds (with the exception of the first and second), repeat on the other side, but in doing so make sure that there is space left in the beaded holes for the subsequent assembly. Leave the thread hanging.

40

41

40 Pick up 2 sb11-f, slide them toward the existing beads and directly behind them stitch to the back. Stitch through to the front behind the 3rd sb11-f (counted backward) and pass through the last 3 sb11-f (back stitch).

96

45

45 Stitch to the back. Work 1 more back stitch round with sb11-g around the cabochon. Secure the thread and trim. Trim the felt close to the edges, making sure to not cut the existing beading thread. Cut out the thin cardboard with 4 mm less than the felt all around and adhere it to the back. Glue the leather to the back and trim it to the existing shape leaving an allowance of about 1 mm.

41 According to the previous step work all around. Make sure to apply an even number of beads. Close the rounds by passing through the 1st sb11-f.

44 43

43 According to the previous step, work all around. Step up through the 1st sb11-f.

46 42 Pick up 1 sb11-f and pass through the sb11-f after the next. Repeat (peyote). Work with a moderate thread tension.

38 According to steps 24–37 make 1 more ear with sb11-c and mg-a consisting of three times 4 mg-a, 1 ear with four times 4 mg-a, 2 ears with five times 4 mg-a and 1 ear with seven times 4 mg-a. According to steps 24–37 with sb11-d and mg-b 1 more ear with a total of four times 4 mg-b, 1 ear with five times 4 mg-b and 1 ear with six times 4 mg-b.

44 Work 1 more peyote round with sb11-f. If necessary (if the cabochon is very high) add more peyote rows with sb11-f. Work 1 peyote round with sb15-i. Repeat if necessary.

47

46 Cut 80 cm (31.5˝) of thread and thread a needle. Pick up 1 tde and pass down through both layers (felt and leather) close to the edge leaving a 15 cm (5.9˝) tail and holding it. Pass back through the tde.

48 48 Rope: Cut 1 m (40˝) of thread and thread a needle. Pick up 4 sb11-f and pass through all beads again, aligning them into 2 stacks side by side as shown in the diagram leaving a 20 cm (8˝) tail which might be used for a potential extension later. Make sure to not pass through the thread as you might need to shorten and thus to take out some elements later.

47 Pick up 1 tde and about the size of 1 tde apart from the previous bead pass from front to back through both layers close to the edge. Pass back through the tde. Connect both layers of fabric all around in this manner. Close the round by passing through the 1st tde of the round again. Do not trim the threads. Edge all 3 cabochons in this manner.

49 49 Pick up 2 sb11-f and pass through the 2nd stack and through the newly added beads in the circle (ladder stitch).
