It was the first TOEFL issued by ETS. The PBT-TOEFL test system uses paper or sheets of question paper and answer sheets to be filled with 2B pencils. The material tested is: Listening, Structure, and Reading. Score range 217 – 677. Duration : 2 - 2.5 hours.

Listening Comprehension (Understanding in Listening) This section tests your ability to listen to short conversation or short speeches in English through tape or other audio media provided by the TOEFL test committee. The number of questions on this chart is: 50 questions Duration: 40 minutes.
Structure and Written Expression This section deals with Structure or grammar. This section is your ability to understand the grammars and phrases that are prevalent in the English language. In addition, this section demands your ability in understanding and knowing the location of the error of the phrase or grammar. Number of questions: 40 questions Duration: 25 minutes.
Reading Comprehension This section test your ability to understand various types of scientific reading related to: topics, main ideas, reading content, meaning of words or groups of words, as well as detailed information relating to the reading. Because the level of vocabulary and text difficulty levels used in the reading are quite high, you should use the right strategy in working on this section. Number of questions: 50 questions Duration: 55 minutes.
Test of Written English (TWE) This section tests your ability to write an essay. You will be given a specific topic and then you are asked to pour in short essay writing. But not all TOEFL tests use TWE, even the few who include it as one of the test materials. TWE scores are given separately from the TOEFL score overall. The scoring scale ranges from 1-6. Reading Comprehension Reading sessions (reading) consist of 3 to 5 readings, each
containing 700 words and followed by several questions related to the reading. The theme of the readings is academic In addition, they also contain some rhetorical functions, such as causation, comparisons, and arguments. In this session, test takers will be asked about key ideas, reading details, conclusions, important information, reminders (insertion statements), vocabulary, rhetorical purposes, overall ideas, and the latest is to fill in tabei or complete the conclusions. Number of questions: 12-14 questions Duration: 60-100 minutes.
Listening Comprehension The listening session consists of two conversations and four
academic discussions. In the conversation there will be two speakers, a student and a professor or a campus staff. Participants will only be given conversation material once . Each conversation will be followed by 5 questions and each discussion followed by 6 questions. • The number of questions : 6-9 parts, each consisting of 56 questions • Duration: 40 minutes.
Speaking
The speaking session consists of 6 exercises, two independent exercises and 4 interrelated exercises. In an independent exercise, participants are asked to provide opinions on a hot or familiar topic. At this stage, the spontaneous speaking ability of the participants is evaluated. Furthermore, in two interrelated exercises, participants are asked to read short passages, listen to academic lectures or conversations about lecture life, and answer questions by combining information appropriate to the reading or conversation. Then in two subsequent related exercises, participants are asked to listen to academic lectures or conversations about campus life and respond to questions they hear. At this stage, the participants' ability to integrate information is appropriately evaluated The responses submitted by the participants will be digitally recorded and sent to ETS's Online Scoring Network (OSN) and evaluated by three to six experts. • Number of questions: 6 questions • Duration: 20 minutes.
Test of Written English (TWE) Consisting of two exercises. The first exercise is related exercise and the second is an independent
exercise. In interrelated exercises, participants read an academic-themed reading and then listen to a discussion that has the same theme. Participants will write a conclusion about the key points of what they hear and explain their relationship to what they read. While in an independent exercise, participants must write an essay stating, explaining, and supporting the participants' opinions on an issue.
