Eclectic School of Jewellery & Design is a dedicated metal clay studio that offer a range of classes and courses. One-to-one teaching and group sessions are available, from beginner to master level. Monica Weber-Butler shares her tips for working with metal clay. l Instead of sanding, gently run a baby wipe along rough edges.

l Rehydrate warped, dry, unfired metal clay by placing a baby wipe near it and covering with cling film to create a humidity chamber. Wait a few minutes, then gently reshape the piece.

l To create faux rivets or domed decorative elements, roll the clay to the desired thickness and place cling film over the top. Use a tube cutter or straw to cut out the shape.

l When placing fresh textured clay over a dome, using a sponge, gently push the clay shape down – this prevents the texture marring as you press.

CLARE SPENDER THE NFWI CRAFT ADVISER GETS HER BUTTONS AND BEADS OUT FOR A GOOD CAUSE

S

ticking with the ‘I am not going to purchase any new materials’ theme this year I have been sorting through all my boxes and cases filled with buttons and beads that I had forgotten about. For some reason I am drawn to any shade of green. Often there are several different green cotton reels lying around, with a green button or piece of green material and I have a grand collection of green bulldog clips that hold everything together from my receipts to planned projects on my desk. What better use for all these green bits and pieces, than to create heart brooches for the ‘Show the Love’ Climate Coalition Campaign. You can be sure that people will ask why you are wearing a green heart instead of standard red one, and you can tell them of the very worthy cause that you are supporting! Now I wonder how many green beads I have, or should I buy new ones?

THIS MONTH WE ARE MAKING…

8th-10th February 2017 Watercolours for Beginners: Join tutor Michael Burgess on a course that will take you through the different stages of painting a watercolour landscape. Learn about composition, colour mixing and different mediums in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. 23rd-26th February 2017 Drawing for the Terrified: With expert guidance you will discover how to develop your drawing skills

using specific ‘recipes’ designed to build confidence. Work in monochrome and colour to create an accomplished still life drawing to be proud of. 24th-26th February 2017 Afternoon Teas: Whether you want to wow your friends or are hosting a party, this course will teach you how to create high-end afternoon tea pastries, cakes and sandwiches in a mix of classic and modern styles. Delight in passion fruitcake, brulee tart or a show stopper with a twist, a chocolate Battenberg.

Denman Diary

As the crafting calendar rolls into spring, there are many celebrations that require a handmade greeting. This bright design would suit a Valentine or birthday; the card is easy enough to assemble using a die-cut heart shape. Why not select papers with printed sentiments so that you can theme the card to suit the occasion?

LIZ MOAD’S QUILLING MASTERCLASS

Lettering Lesson

EMBED AN OUTLINED MESSAGE IN A QUILLED FLORAL MASTERPIECE Quilled lettering is very much on-trend at the moment, so I wanted to share a take that's a little different. Rather than filling in the lettering, they're outlined in white and the background is completed with a floral design using traditional techniques of quilling, coiling and pinching. I printed my words in 200pt Times New Roman, or a sans serif font such as Helvetica would be less tricky. It can be a time-consuming project, but the dense mass of quilled flowers is striking.

Happy quilling, Liz x

Start with... Quilling papers: 3mm wide, white, pink, red, yellow, oranges, greens, Quilling tools: slotted, needle Card, white

Tweezers Picture frame Ribbon, green Adhesives

Hi! Greeting

1 paper and use masking tape to

Print a short greeting onto printer

temporarily attach it to white card, 11.5cm x 17cm. Use an embossing tool to trace the outline of each letter, pressing heavily. Use as little glue as possible to stick white strips to the embossed outline of the first letter. Work slowly and hold each piece in place with tweezers as the adhesive dries. Repeat until your message is complete. To create a flower petal, use a quilling tool to make a loose closed coil from a 20cm length of yellow quilling paper, then pinch into a teardrop shape. Make five in total. Trim an orange strip to 5cm and make a tight coil for the centre. Make six flowers in various colours and arrange them around your message, securing with a small amount of glue. Trim several light green strips between 5cm and 8cm in length an loosely coil each end, then stick a few near every flower.

Crafts Tip

Use the same white card as for the background to cut 3mm strips, then use them to outline the letters so they match perfectly

Make It Personal Add quilled flowers and coils around a friend's name and frame it to create a unique and thoughtful gift. To make this, follow the same techniques as for the greeting card, creating a few flowers using only three teardrop petals for variation and adding some dark pink leaves made from 20cm strips to help fill the space. We used a 20cm x 25cm piece of white card for this five-letter name.

Hanging Flowers For a door hanger, draw the outline shape, or find a template online, and

cut it from white card. Outline 'Love' and fill the background with flowers, leaves and coils as before. Don't add any quilled shapes to the top of the hanger, as they will not stand much handling. Add a green ribbon to the top and tie in a bow instead. CB

COLETTE SMITH’S MASTERCLASS

DIY stencils made easy MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR DIES TO CREATE SOMETHING UNIQUE FOR YOUR SWEETHEART There is an extensive range of stencils on the market at the moment, but for times when you have something really specific in mind, the quickest and easiest way is to make your own. Heart outlines are easy to come by, but I already had nesting dies in the perfect shape, which made it really easy to match the background and ombré heart motif to create a romantic card. The beauty of this is that you can make any stencil you want from scraps of basic card and simple dies, and when it wears out you can replace it at almost no cost, make the most our of your dies and get creative!

In The Know... k Make sure you leave a large enough area around your die-cut shape to prevent the brush going over the edge and ruining your work. k Nesting dies work really well for stencils, but you can experiment with more intricate shapes and hand-drawn shapes to see what works for you. k Get creative with your medium – try paint, chalk and dyes, and use sponges, blending pads and spritzing bottles for different effects. k Blend different colours and hues of ink for shaded or ombré effects

“Create a long-lasting, wipe-clean stencil by purchasing some polyester film, such as mylar. Choose a thickness and size to suit your needs, then simply die-cut your chosen shape and use the same as a card stencil” Colette Smith, Designer

Repeat with a 1.25cm heart. Position the piece with the larger aperture on a rectangle of white card, 10.5cm x 15cm, using washi tape to keep it in place. Load pale pink ink onto a stippling brush, tap excess onto paper, then apply by holding the brush upright and dabbing inside the aperture. Repeat on a different area of the card, continuing with the same colour and stencil until you are happy with the coverage. Repeat with the smaller stencil, using medium then dark pink ink to fill in gaps until the entire surface is covered. Matt the stencilled panel onto a tent-fold blank the same size. Use a corner rounder to punch through all layers at the bottom. Use nesting heart dies on card in similar shades to your ink, then layer and attach to the blank. Add a sentiment to the smallest shape and a ribbon tied in a bow to the top. CB

Draw the Squeegee down the screen using a little pressure, with the Squeegee angled towards you at about 30 degrees. If you find your resulting image has run or bled, try using less ink or altering the angle.

the patterns so they stay locked as you move the resulting honeycomb around the screen. Resize the honeycomb so each hexagon is 2cm wide, then repeat the block several times. Build up a large area, then cut from orange and golden yellow cardstock. Take care when peeling each out as you will be using the background instead of the shapes. Layer the two panels together to create a drop shadow effect. Layer pale heather card to an A5 blank, then fix the section to the front. Scan the bee template from our pattern pages and save it as both an outline and a detailed cutout. Cut one outline from gold glitter paper and two

Many die-cutters are in your exact position, seeking out ways to make the most of those well-loved plates! As you die-cut, the plastic plates actually stretch and lose a fraction of their thickness, though it's enough that you lose a bit of pressure when die-cutting. To combat this, I would definitely recommend using a metal shim. Simply make your sandwich as usual, then pop the shim on the top plate before running it through your machine. You may also find that you have a tendency to place your dies in the same position on your plates. This causes more wear in that specific area, so all you need to do is pop it on a different part. And remember, the sides are where most of the pressure will be, so you'll get a better cut there!

Corinne’s Top Tips:

Start with...

l Cut your fabric so the selvage grain runs parallel to the edges of the beds and the crosswise is parallel to the rollers l If you're using a mixture of materials, it's best to prewash them in case they're prone to shrinking l Keep to an accurate 1/4” seam allowance when sewing the pieces together, this way you're certain of clean lines when joining more sections of the design

Make a colourful quilt

1

Slice a 20cm patterned square in half somewhere (it doesn’t matter where), then cut a contrasting solid strip, 4cm wide and slightly longer than the square. Sew this strip to one half of the cut, then join the other half of the square to the other side of the strip. When inserting the solid strip, don’t line the ends up perfectly. Cut the square in half again, this time at 90° to the first cut. Insert another strip, lining up to make a cross on your fabric square. Trim to 20cm square. Make more patches in the same way until you have 12 complete squares. Press the quilt top.

2

Work with a 5mm seam allowance throughout See our shopping list opposite

3

Place the backing fabric face down, the wadding in-between, then the patterend section face up on top. Pin, then quilt all three layers using your favourite pattern. We have used a diagonal wavy pattern in a freeform style. Trim, then square or round the corners, then bind the edges using bias binding.

JULIE & WENDY

Crafty Beggars presenters Julie Peasgood and Wendy TurnerWebster tell us about the crafty products they adore and why the heart is their favourite shape of all February is a big month in Crafty Beggars HQ – Valentine’s Day provides a great excuse for them to indulge in their love for everything heart-shaped (not that they need one)! We can’t say we blame them – a strong admiration for the symbol of love is not uncommon in the creative world, it’s the shape that reigns supreme in the opinion of crafters everywhere, mainly thanks to its simplicity and versatility. It’s definitely for this reason that a certain pair of Crafty Beggars have been using it at every opportunity; from wall art to jewellery, cards and bunting, Julie and Wendy have caught the love bug and we think it’s catching!

WENDY SAYS… When I spotted this large and grubby notice board for a bargain £3 in a local charity shop, my own heart began to flutter! I had some beautiful red Fabscraps fabric at home and I felt compelled to give this faded beauty a new lease of life. I delight in these kind of projects as (let’s be honest) someone’s already done the hard work for you, and covering it with new material is just the fabulous icing on a rather dull cake. A close second favourite is such an easy yet effective project. Add some swirly shapes to an MDF heart with a strong glue. Leave to dry, then cover with kitchen foil, taking care not to tear

it. Paint over with a gold, silver or bronze paint (I used ArtC Walnut Brown) and voilà – an embossed heart that looks almost like solid metal. Needless to say, I love it!

JULIE SAYS… pictures, a doormat, Post-it notes… you name it, I have it in a heart shape, and with each Valentine’s Day comes the inevitable expansion of my collection!

“THE CRAFTY BEGGARS HAVE CROWNED THE HEART KING OF SHAPES AND HAVE BEEN ADORNING THEM IN EVERY WAY POSSIBLE!”

Sharing the love...

The Funky Glue Pen by Tonic Studios is intended for general use and on fabrics, but take it from us – it sticks anything to anything.

I made the hanging decoration from a little MDF heart and embellishments from my trove of a craft cupboard (I risk concussion every time I open it. Note to self – must spring clean ASAP!). I’ll tie it round the bottle light that I made for my husband Patrick. He’s been wanting a night light for ages, so I upcycled a wine bottle and an old postcard, and added some fantastic textured paint from Prima’s Art Basics Mixed Media Essentials Kit and a few flat white

pebbles. The cork contains a small LED bulb which is conveniently rechargeable by USB – I’m pleased with it and just hope he loves it too!

{

I have an obsession with everything heart shaped. My daughter Kate once went round the house counting it all, with a staggering 67, including decorations, coasters,

Crafty must-haves recommended for you by the crafty duo themselves!

We recently spent a day with Stephanie Weightman using Cosmic Shimmer embossing powder to make enamel-style hearts.

There’s something romantic about this pattern, and The Red Tartan paper from Decopatch is a particularly lovely addition to any decoupage project.

Customising handmade gift boxes for your recipient is an inexpensive way to give even the smallest of presents a big impact. Use a strong cardstock and carefully select the colour and design to ensure it is reused and treasured long after the celebration has ended. When choosing a patterned paper, opt for repeat patterns such as stripes and small flowers which will be visible on all sides of the finished box. Experiment using templates and origami

folding techniques – and don’t start right away on your good papers! Make the box a little larger than needed, then fill the space with shredded tissue paper; it looks great and protects the contents. If you don’t have a bone folder, try using a metal ruler and butter knife for the same effect.

SARA NAUMANN’S MASTERCLASS

Bespoke Card Focals TRANSFORM PLAIN WHITE TEXTURE PASTE WITH A FEW SIMPLE STEPS! Texture paste has become a staple for papercrafters who want to add pattern and dimension to cards. You can use the paste straight from the jar, or tint it with colour. Ranger’s texture paste is a clean, opaque white, which makes it great fun to use in combination with stamp pad refillers. A few drops mixed in gives you the chance to create your own bespoke medium. You can also add paint and sprays, though I like re-inkers because they give rich colours that don’t add excess water to the mixture. This is ideal for working with stencils as you don’t want a watery texture paste to seep underneath! Take the customisation a step further – add glitter or embossing powder to the mix before applying it to your paper for a fabulous sparkle. When you’re done applying your medium through the stencil, be sure to clean your template and palette knife thoroughly.

Crafts Tip

Replace the lid of your texture paste right away so it doesn’t dry out in the jar

“I’m looking to put together a bundle of products for my niece who’s just started sewing, what would you suggest I buy for her?” SAMANTHA CLARIDGE

The Sew Crafty owner is a huge fan of taking pretty pictures for her website and Instagram. sewcraftyonline.co.uk

SAMANTHA SAYS… I would say that felt is a great fabric to start with as the edges don’t fray and it comes in loads of great colours. Fat quarter bundles are also a good investment as you get a few different prints that co-ordinate with

each other to make fun, small projects to get started with. Then a few bits and bobs like ribbons, trimmings, sequins and pretty buttons that she can use as embellishments – they always go down really well.

“I love colouring in toppers for my cards, though I want to add more detail. Can you recommend a set of pens for me please?” SARA SAYS... If you want to

take your colouring to the next level, the Spectrum Illustrator pens are a great choice. Each one has a super-fine nib for precise line work and a flexible brush nib for smooth filling of larger areas. While Spectrum Noir markers are perfect for beginners, Illustrator pens are the next step for intermediate and advanced colourists and artists, thanks to their versatility. The tip is thinner and firmer than the original marker, and the colour chart is shared except with an additional 48 new colours, which have been added to balance the range.

“I always forget what I’ve bought and what projects I’ve got to finish – how can I keep track of them and my products?” SAMANTHA SAYS... Thanks to my mum,

I have always kept a journal of all my fabric purchases and projects. With this in mind, I designed one that we now sell online store called the Sew Crafty Sewing Journal. It has sections for recording details of your projects, notes and ideas, where I note down any purchases with the plans I have for them. You can pick up your own for £12.95.

“I want to start selling handmade baby outfits online, what are the dos and don’ts for making clothes for young children?” CAMILLA SAYS... If you create any products for young children, you must make sure they are safe. It is your responsibility as the manufacturer to meet the legal requirements and it’s a criminal offence to supply unsafe products, even if you’re just making things at home and selling them in your spare time. There are strict laws about flammability for children’s nightwear, and you also need to be aware of the potential dangers of cords, drawstrings, magnets and buttons. Read more here gov.uk/guidance/productsafety-for-manufacturers and see that you are covered by product liability insurance too.

We caught up with the artists taking the humble piece of paper and turning it into marvellous works of art

J

ulene Harrison designs delicate papercuts and keeps her studio as neat as her work. She began papercutting entirely by accident, but now big companies all over the world use her beautifully intricate pieces to promote products and events. We find out how she got started... “I got into paper cutting truly by accident – I made my first design as an inexpensive gift that would be light to post overseas, then two more followed as wedding presents. I started a blog and soon I began getting commissions, initially from friends, then big companies like Nutella and Waitrose asked for custom designs. I joined an illustration agency and haven’t looked back.

“I prefer cutting to designing, when it finally comes to that stage I can relax. All the ‘hard’ work of client consultation, designing and planning is done. I can put some low-brow TV on in the background and just focus. It’s quite meditative. I moved into a studio space about six months ago, it’s huge and has a lot of light… far too much sometimes and I have to wear sunglasses! I’m a tidy person, which is probably why I like papercutting – it’s clean with very little mess, so my space is quite empty. I don’t have much on the walls. Tidy studio = tidy mind. “My style is detail orientated and often tells a visual story or journey. Quite a lot of my work is romantic in nature, especially the first anniversary pieces – lots of hearts, flowers and birds. It’s funny because that’s not my style in person. I love getting commissions that challenge me to create something different! I know a lot of people draw straight onto the paper they are going to cut, but I design using Photoshop. Mostly I’ll work on one piece at a time only, unless a more urgent job comes in. “The paper I use hasn’t changed since the very first papercut I made back in 2009. It’s Espon Premium Presentation paper in Matt. My scalpel is Swann Morton, number 3 handle, 10a blades – I think this

brand is popular with lots of paper artists. I find it light in the hand and a plaster around the end gives you something soft to hold onto.” Check out Julene’s work at madebyjulene.com and see her blog, crafts-beautiful.com/blog

P

oppy Chancellor is a London based illustrator and papercut artist. She shares her top tips with us.

Use a sharp blade

A blunt blade is very likely to tear your paper; sharp ones allow for cleaner cuts. Make sure you change your blade every 2–3 hours. You can safely remove your blade with pliers, or most craft knives simply swivel open to release.

Cut back to front

This means you’ll be cutting the back of the work and when you’re finished you can flip it over, leaving a clean finish with no guidelines or pencil marks visible from your initial design.

Always cut towards yourself

You’ll have more control by cutting this way. Remember to keep turning the paper round as you cut using your other hand to keep the paper flat and in place so it doesn’t wrinkle while you’re cutting.

Cut the details first

By cutting the smallest sections first you’re less likely to tear the intricate parts. Work up to the larger sections and outline so that the strength of the paper can support your design. If some parts seem too intricate for you, just leave them out!

Let your lines overlap

When two lines that you’re cutting meet, make sure they do fully, otherwise you’re left with a section of paper, which creates a bit of fluff when torn out of the design. You can prevent this by slightly overcutting the line. This gives your work a clean, professional finish.

chances are the paper won’t cut right through and it may tear. To see more of Poppy’s work visit poppyspaercuts.com Download and print this decorative hand template taken from Poppy’s book, Cut It Out (£14.99, Virgin Books) penguinrandomhouse.co.uk

Press nice and hard!

Work slowly and press hard. The harder you press the cleaner your cut will be (this also helps if you have a sharp blade). If you try to rush your papercutting,

aul Jackson started making art from paper as an act of defiance and loves to push the boundaries.

Low-tack tape

Have you always been creative? In my early teens I knew I wanted to go to art school, but origami, which I’ve done since the age of about twelve, was never more than a hobby. I used to paint a lot, though it was never something I did well or connected with. I thought it was what artists did and that’s what we all did in school art classes! Do you need any special training to become a paper artist? I went to art school aged eighteen. Origami continued to be a hobby until one day, some years later, when I was doing an MA in Fine Art my professor heard about my hobby and asked to see what I was doing. I brought in my animals and flowers, and he knocked them to the floor, saying they weren’t art! I kind of understood him, but folding paper seemed like a genuinely challenging thing to do, when the other students were trying to be challenging, so of course, from that moment I was a paper artist! It was something to push against. Whether what I did was good or not, I can’t say, but I was different enough to stand out. I’m sure my immersion in a Fine Art education helped me in many ways as a paper artist. What do you love most about paper art and why? I love that it can be done pretty much anywhere, at any time, with just the minimum of inexpensive equipment (or none at all). To make beautiful

things from something as inert as a sheet of paper is, for me, an act of alchemy. Paper I think is the most versatile of all materials. The range of techniques and expression from geometric pop-ups to textured handmade paper is astonishing. There’s something for everyone! Do you have a favourite technique or type of paper to work with? I’m always looking for new techniques to explore, or looking for new contexts in which to do something familiar. For example: it’s easy to make a fold down the middle of a sheet, but what can it be made to do in 3-D, in relief, in combination with other folds and more? A lot of new paper art, craft and design is very complex and for my taste, too decorative. So for a few years I’ve been trying to strip everything away to make pieces as simple as possible. It’s a tough ask, but I feel I’m getting there! Check out Paul’s book Cut And Fold Paper Textures, £16.99, Laurence King.

Heart-Shaped Hanging

1 strips from Liberty fabrics. Prepare 3cm wide bias

For a small heart, make the strip 50cm long. To make a medium shape, cut one 50cm strip in Wiltshire, one 70cm from Scotty's Tiger, and for a large shape, two 50cm berry strips, one 70cm in the animal print. Cut a strip of piping cord, 1m long. Find the centre and wrap the bias strip around it, wrong side uppermost. Sew the end to the centre,

2

reinforcing with a few extra stitches, then trim any excess fabric. Using a piping or zipper foot, stitch the bias strip around and close to the cord. Take the end of the cord and pull the bias along it. You may need to use a pin to coax it along until all the material has been turned to the right side. Cut away any exposed cord and discard it. Bend the end of the cord into a bow shape, then stick the inside of the loops together. Circle around the shape with the free end, then hand stitch the coils. As you approach the centre of the bow, pinch the cord and sew the pinched part. At the lower end, pinch and stitch again to create the heart. Circle around the heart until you approach the top indent or the base. Cut the cord to fit neatly into either area. Peel back the bias to reveal the piping cord, remove 1cm and pull the bias over the end. Neaten and sew in place. Repeat the process for medium and large hearts. For these shapes, stitch the individual bias strips together first to form one long one.

3

When you have completed the shapes, stitch a heart button to the centre of each. Fold another bias strip in half lengthways, wrong side uppermost. Stitch close to the fold along the length and turn out using a Rouleau tool. Snip a piece from one end and put aside. Sew one end of the long strip to the back of the large heart, then stitch to attach to the medium and small shapes. Make a loop above the small heart and secure the end in the indent at the top. Using the short scrap of Rouleau, fasten a bow around the base of the hanging loop to finish.

Roughly mash in the raspberries and tip over the oats, stir well, cover and leave to soak overnight (or at least for 2 hrs). 3 In the morning, layer the oats and some of the jam into a jar or swirl in a bowl and top with extra raspberries.

to make a stencil. Roll out a thin piece of metal clay on a cutting mat, dust a small floral butterfly stamp lightly with talcum powder, then stamp into the clay. Lay the stencil on the clay and carefully cut a knife shape. Add a hole for hanging, then create a serrated edge on the knife. Make the fork the same way. Dust a teaspoon with talcum powder and carefully rest the fork on top to shape it. Let the clay dry out overnight, then fire the cutlery on a soldering block using a blowtorch. Rub the pieces with a wire brush and polish to a high shine with a metal burnisher. Roll out one red, one white and two cognac polymer clay discs, ensuring they’re the same size. Layer them on top of one another to create a jam and cream Victoria sandwich. Use a metal brush to recreate the texture of sponge and dust with glitter. Carefully cut the cake in six pieces, adding an eye pin to each slice. Roll a piece of cognac clay into a flattish ball to form a doughnut. Roll out a blended piece of raspberry and white

Bake the polymer clay pieces on a sheet of paper according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Add a caribiner clasp and two 5mm jump rings to a length of loose trace chain. Thread the charms onto 7mm jump rings and attach to the chain using a toggle ring and a 6mm jump ring.

Roll a piece of glitter white clay into two rough squares, using a knife to shape them into cubes. Add an eye pin to each and bake according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Make a doughnut as for the necklace and attach a leftover piece of cake. Thread them all onto 7mm jump rings and fix to the keyring. CB

People & Places

“I’m lucky enough to call jewellery making my job!” LOUISE MACLEOD

W

e chat to Louise MacLeod, director of the stunning jewellery design website, Bead House. She talks us through her passion for jewellery making, how it all started and what inspires her to carry on doing the job she adores. I was hooked making friendship bracelets when I was a teen, I made them for all my friends at school. I recently got my basket out of the loft at my parents house to show my little girl and it’s wonderful that I’m now lucky enough to call it my job! I started designing jewellery properly 15 years ago when I supplied my creations to shops, and I haven’t looked back since. I’ve grown up with beading throughout my life, as it’s our family business. I remember once, as a child, mixing all the stock of cabochon together thinking they looked lovely, but Dad thought otherwise! Over the years, I worked in the company as a summer job, then came back to it a few years after university. I was taught the basics of jewellery making by a lovely customer, then started making handmade pieces to sell. I kept asking our purchasers to source different materials for me, and from there I moved into the beads and findings side of the business.

can be used to recreate these. Pinterest has become a fantastic tool for jewellery makers, but sometimes the beads or findings just lend themselves to a certain design.

Everyday is different at the Bead House and that’s what I love most about it. I usually set the day off to a lovely start by having breakfast with my dad at a local bakery, then work days are either sourcing and marketing products or planning for the business. The best part of my job is being able to discover and buy beautiful products, and also seeing what our customers make with our products. If I really had to pick one, my least favourite job would be the boring admin tasks. I’m a very good starter, but not very good at finishing jobs that I get bored of! I just love creating wearable designs, usually in sterling silver, gemstones or pearls. There’s no better feeling than seeing my friends still wearing the pieces I made them years ago. Although I love creating timeless pieces, I also like following the latest trends to see which of our products

If you’re looking to take up jewellery making as a hobby or even a business, my main advice would be to find your style. It’s a really accessible craft as it doesn’t take long to learn the basics, but it’s so satisfying to create your own designs that you love and can give to friends. The best tools to use are also the most basic ones. I’d be lost without a good pair of round and flat nose pliers and good flush cutters, they may be boring but there’s so much you can do with them!

Stephanie Weightman looks forward to spring with a Nouveau twist

MY TREAT THIS M ONTH… I 've

been poring ov er catalogues fr om the Phoenix CHA show. It's so exciting to see how the craft indu stry will spoil us next!

Something I’ve learned...

There is so much love for Art Deco and Art Nouveau styles. Perhaps it's down to the popularity of shows like Mr Selfridge and Downton Abbey, with their fantastic sets and costumes? Or perhaps it's our appreciation for these styles that makes the shows capture the imagination? Either way, it goes to show that great designs continue to inspire us.

CRAFT OF THE MONTH

I

nspired by the creative surge of spring, with its delicate floral hues and romantic colours, I'm currently rediscovering Art Nouveau; I just adore all the trademark decorative curves. A set of three beautiful new stamps from Rare Earth are very much inspired by this graceful, feminine style. They're called Audrey, Liberty and Rosemary, and I'm really looking forward to working with them.

Hot Product Flectere, which is Latin for ‘to bend’, is also the name of a new Tattered Lace range encouraging crafters to get flexible. These dies can help you create really intricate three-dimensional scenes. With interchangeable layers in each set, the possibilities are going to be endless. Look out for Love Story, Faerydaea and Majestic Bouquet. Coming soon to createand craft.tv

FAVE THING!

I love, love, love Rare Earth's new water-based brush pens. These four gorgeous sets - Earth Tones, Pastels, Neutrals and Brights – represent the full palette of springtime shades and are perfect for adding a splash of colour to your creations.

Look what I made!

All this floral artistry has inspired my most recent paper crafting exploits! The Tattered Lace Delicate Detail dies are easy to use, and the pattern stays in the card so you can decide where to place it. I've had loads of fun playing with foiling and gilding, and the results are so pretty.

Fold white A4 cardstock 1 in half vertically to create a tent card. Using the Essentials Hearts die, place the largest 2.5mm over the fold. Cut through both thicknesses to create a heart greeting. Die-cut an oval 2 sentiment from white paper and a larger one from yellow glitter card. Attach the two together with foam pads, then place onto the greeting as shown.

Crafts Tip

Try ‘patch shimming’ a die-cut that has a small area of detail uncut, usually in the centre. Tear the edges of a piece of scrap cardstock (it won’t leave any hard edges if they are torn) and pop right onto the uncut area and run through the machine again.

Cut six rectangles, 1.5cm 3 x 3cm from patterned paper. Cut a ‘V’ shape into the bottom edge of each, then attach to pink cord. Stick onto the card using foam pads. Tie two bows and stick one either side of the bunting. Finish with pearls.

Put your cardstock inside the Cut Tidy folder, the die on top, then run through the machine. The die cut stays in the folder, ready to pop all the waste into the bin and the die is completely clean. The Cut Tidy can be used over and over again.
