3
Advantages of LASER Scanning
•
•
Uses a combination of dimensional control survey methodology and high density 3D Laser Scanning to collect the as-built environment accurately. Scanners are safe with respect to both personnel and plant operation. Point Engineering Ltd.
4
High-Resolution LASER Scanners
• •
Each scan takes approximately 3 minutes Equipment is easily transported – it’s battery operated Point Engineering Ltd.

Engineering Design for Revamp Projects •
•
•
Use laser scanning directly inside 3D CAD for planning of clash free pipe routings. Dimensional control of individual points for accurate tie-in planning and first time fit-up in the field. Laser scan data is used directly inside 3D CAD as an immediate as-built model for the new design and for checking potential clashes between the proposed new plant and the existing plant.
Key criteria a) Modular Construction b) Built in different geographical locations by multiple vendors c) Various temperatures and Units of measurement d) Major interfaces to control that vendor is not taking ownership of e) critical to overall project that interfaces run smoothly Driver for the project
Avoid the need for trial erection Assurance that major interfaces will run smoothly by avoiding unforeseen dimensional errors Time \ Schedule \ Cost Reduce offshore hook-up time by adopting Zero-weld philosophy Maximise fabrication prior to mating

Using Scan Data Simply - Viewer •
• •
•
•
•
Laser scan data can be viewed within or between offices Can view data over the Internet Viewer will provide visualisation, red-lining and measurement capability “Intelligence” can be represented by linking to a pre-existing model or by annotation Viewing scan data is useful yet limited by how much data can be “tagged” The Viewer approach has a place in simple asset management

Modelling Options Available Geometric model • •
•
Cheaper to produce and maintain Useful for plant visualistion and simulation Does not carry “intelligence”
Intelligent model • •
•
More costly to produce and maintain Can be used to support engineering projects as an as-built plant Can link to ops. and maintenance information, e.g. Asset Integrity tests, NDT results, Risk Assessments, etc.
