TEAMTALK

IT’S NOT EASY BEING GREEN ‘Om Swastiastu...’ With Earth Hour having just passed last month and Earth Day coming up on April 22, we’ve had “being green” on our minds. It’s not easy making huge changes to our lifestyles, especially after growing used to the conveniences that modern technologies afford us. But why not start with little things? Try using reusable cloth bags instead of plastic bags the next time you go shopping, make an effort to turn off lights that don’t necessarily need to be on, and walk or bike whenever going short distances. We’ve even heard that unplugging appliances, rather than just putting them in off mode, helps to save energy. So often we forget to pay attention to little things like these, but from now on let’s make a conscious effort to remember! For a bit of inspiration, turn to LIFESTYLE & LEISURE to read about the Green School in Sibang Kaja, a low-impact international school with emphasis on environmental learning. To remind you of the wonders of nature and why it is so important to protect it, turn to FOTOFOLIO to see some amazing macro photography shots of Bali’s tinier inhabitants. You can also turn to BEYOND BALI to read about the wonderful array of underwater species at Raja Ampat, a destination championed by so many enthusiastic travelers these days. It’s up to us to make sure these beautiful places and living things don’t disappear one day, so we hope you make an effort to do your part! Enjoy this edition and have a wonderful April. ‘Om Shanti Shanti Shanti Om…’ The Team

THE IMPORTANCE OF CEREMONIES Why do the Balinese insist on putting together all these ceremonies, especially as they are physically tiring, require much money, and block the many possibilities of having a fabulous career outside of the island? This question haunted me for years. It felt like a huge sacrifice when I thought about what could possibly be. Why must I take unpaid leave from the office to stay at home, while my friends take holidays abroad and post pictures of themselves in front of the Eiffel Tower on their Facebook pages? It all started to make sense once my parents shared their watch TV. Even when it was time

THE STYLE EVOLUTION OF FOUR SEASONS RESORT BALI AT SAYAN More Romantic, More in Touch with Nature, More Authentically Balinese Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan is pleased to announce its continuing evolution with the transformation of all 42 villas. The makeover will result in villas that are more romantic, more in touch with nature, and more authentically Balinese. Located in the islandÊs central highlands just minutes away from the artistic and cultural capital of Ubud, Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan is hidden in a lush green paradise beside the sacred Ayung River. It is no wonder the resort was recognized as one of the worldÊs very best on the Condé Nast TravelerÊs Gold List 2013. „Our one and two bedroom villas have always been considered unique in the world,‰ said the resortÊs new General Manager, Uday Rao. „The villas have been impeccably maintained over the 15 years since the resort was built, but we wanted the design to evolve to ensure our place among the finest villas in Bali.‰ Designed by Koichi Yasuhiro from TokyoÊs renowned Design Studio SPIN, the new look is chic and modern but with a strong reflection of Balinese architectural style, tradition, and culture. Natural and rustic materials have been used to complement the resortÊs natural atmosphere. All the materials are sourced from Bali, including traditional ikat fabrics, shells, coconuts, as well as Balinese handicrafts. The design gives guests a sense of being in their own private home in Bali. „People always comment on the unusual entryways to our villas,‰ said Uday Rao. „When you arrive, you are greeted by a simple lily pond and a shaded meditation area. You then step downstairs to enter the villa itself, which is nestled amongst the trees and greenery of the river valley.‰ Newly refurbished, the outdoor living area now has more welcoming furnishings with a plush and comfortable day bed for sunning beside the plunge pool and a dining table with umbrella. ItÊs a setting that inspires guests to relax

outdoors in total privacyă from lazy breakfasts to starlit dinners ă staying in constant touch with nature. The air-conditioned interior features a spacious bedroom with new furniture and luxe Balinese detailing. The wall behind the bed is a carved wooden screen featuring a delicate pattern of leaves and birds in front of a glowing red background. As for the bed itself, it can be surrounded by a sheer white canopy for a fantasy of tropical romance. Larger than many bedrooms, the green-marble bathroom includes a dramatic free-standing tub beside the windows in addition to indoor and outdoor showers and a wood-panelled walk-in closet and dressing area. Most spectacular of all is the Royal Villa ă a two story, three bedroom residence overlooking secluded rice terraces and the Ayung River. New furnishings highlight the drama of the open air living room, the dining room and dining gazebo, as well as the dreamy master suite on the upper level. With the completion of the villa metamorphosis, the resort will continue to evolve with the renovation of all 18 suites. As Uday Rao explained, „Our upgrade program has been designed so that guests remain completely undisturbed and unaware of any work in progress. We firmly believe that these ongoing enhancements and new features will enrich the experience for all our guests at Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan.‰ *** As the worldÊs leading operator of luxury hotels, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts currently manages 90 properties in 36 countries. Open since 1998, Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan offers a vacation experience of unlimited variety and the highly personalized, anticipatory service that Four Seasons guests expect and value around the world. On my second trip to Raja Ampat I found myself thinking that I had seen this or that fish before, but then I questioned myself and started taking pictures. I soon realized that the fish were of all different species! Just take the Butterflyfish, for example. The variety is unbelievable, with the subtlest differences. In one species the lines go NW-SE, while the next looks almost identical except that the stripes go SW-NE! And then there’s another species with the same stripe pattern but with a dot on its tail. The four different types of Butterflyfish are the Panda Butterflyfish (Chaetodon adiergastos), Black-backed Butterflyfish (Chaetodonmelannotus), Teardrop Butterflyfish (Chaetodon unimaculatus), and Thin-stripey Butterflyfish (Chaetodon stripei). Well, the fourth is indeed not a Butterflyfish at all but the endemic Raja Dottyback (Pseudochromis sp.) – just checking to see if you are still awake. At this stage, some readers might have concluded that that I am “an incredibly boring person” to notice these subtle differences. But if this kind of thing (along with

Through a variety of activities, hotel guests will have the opportunity to learn how excessive deforestation and illegal poaching endanger the species. INDONESIAN FILM IN MELBOURNE The 8th Indonesian Film Festival (IFF) will be taking place at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) in Melbourne from April 26 until May 2. This annual festival strives to present quality Indonesian films that showcase the cultural diversity of Indonesia to an international audience. The IFF is thrilled to collaborate with the Melbourne University Indonesian Student Association (MUISA) this year. The IFF will invite a number of Indonesian public figures to the festival that are involved directly in the making of the films. Audiences will have the chance to participate in Q&A sessions with producers, directors, as well as actors and actresses from the seven films screened this year. Kicking off the festival will be the screening of Modus Anomali, a movie with a fairly unconventional theme in the Indonesian film industry: Thriller. Other films being screened include Hello Goodbye, Sang Pialang, Jakarta Hati, Cinta Tapi Beda, and Di Balik Frekuensi, which will be the only documentary out of the group. Only six out of the seven titles have been announced, with the last film being a surprise screening. Stay tuned by visiting the IFF’s website

HEALTH&MEDICAL Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
