It’s not easy making huge changes to our lifestyles, especially after growing used to the conveniences that modern technologies afford us. But why not start with little things? Try using reusable cloth bags instead of plastic bags the next time you go shopping, make an effort to turn off lights that don’t necessarily need to be on, and walk or bike whenever going short distances. We’ve even heard that unplugging appliances, rather than just putting them in off mode, helps to save energy. So often we forget to pay attention to little things like these, but from now on let’s make a conscious effort to remember! For a bit of inspiration, turn to LIFESTYLE & LEISURE to read about the Green School in Sibang Kaja, a low-impact international school with emphasis on environmental learning. On my second trip to Raja Ampat I found myself thinking that I had seen this or that fish before, but then I questioned myself and started taking pictures. I soon realized that the fish were of all different species! Just take the Butterflyfish, for example. The variety is unbelievable, with the subtlest differences. In one species the lines go NW-SE, while the next looks almost identical except that the stripes go SW-NE! And then there’s another species with the same stripe pattern but with a dot on its tail. The four different types of Butterflyfish are the Panda Butterflyfish (Chaetodon adiergastos), Black-backed Butterflyfish (Chaetodonmelannotus), Teardrop Butterflyfish (Chaetodon unimaculatus), and Thin-stripey Butterflyfish (Chaetodon stripei). Well, the fourth is indeed not a Butterflyfish at all but the endemic Raja Dottyback (Pseudochromis sp.) – just checking to see if you are still awake. At this stage, some readers might have concluded that that I am “an incredibly boring person” to notice these subtle differences. But if this kind of thing (along with

INDONESIAN FILM IN MELBOURNE The 8th Indonesian Film Festival (IFF) will be taking place at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) in Melbourne from April 26 until May 2. This annual festival strives to present quality Indonesian films that showcase the cultural diversity of Indonesia to an international audience. The IFF is thrilled to collaborate with the Melbourne University Indonesian Student Association (MUISA) this year. The IFF will invite a number of Indonesian public figures to the festival that are involved directly in the making of the films. HEALTH&MEDICAL Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
