SKY GARDEN The mainstay of the Kuta party scene is quite tame at 5 o’clock in the evening, compared to its larger-thanlife late night club scene. Their daily buffet (Rp. 50,000) features flame grilled meat patties cooked well done with a little bit of char on the outside. There is nothing fancy about these burgers, but therein lies the simple brilliance. The burgers are grilled outside on a charcoal grill and the smoke adds to the flavor of the patties. Noshing on a burger outside on the rooftop feels like a backyard barbeque with friends in the summer time. The highlight to the open air dining experience is that guests can make their burgers according to preference. Hate onions? Leave them off. Choose from toppings such as caramelized onions, paper-thin sliced pickles, sweet sun dried tomatoes, chunky onions and crispy bacon. TAPPING SHOES There’s nothing like biting into a good burger after a swim. Soak up Seminyak’s swanky beach club scene at Potato Head, and then get into a big fat burger (Rp. 110,000) at Tapping Shoes Restaurant. The only burger on the menu needs no competition because it stands so well on its own. The thick meat patty is made from juicy Wagyu beef and garnished with simple toppings of lettuce, tomato and adorable miniature pickles. A tangy house-made sauce is placed on the side with a large sesame seed bun, and delivered on a bamboo platter. Every bite is effortlessly soft and tender, as the Wagyu just melts in your mouth.

WAH WAH Burgers get a “swag upgrade” at Wah Wah’s in Seminyak. As you step off busy Jalan Laksmana, the interior opens up into a clean, warm and woody space. Long wooden benches with plush cushions convince diners to stay a while after finishing their meals. Open up the menu and you’ll see that Wah Wah is the “home of not-so humble comfort food.” A quick glance at this menu reveals cheekily labeled food and bawdy cocktail names. Simple ingredients are elevated with touches of gourmet cheeses, foie gras, quail egg and duck liver pâté. The most popular burger on the menu is the WW Classic that comes with a tomato reduction sauce and house-made wild honey mustard mayonnaise. The sweetness of the honey mustard balances the slight acidity of the tomato reduction. Their Wagyu beef patties range in size from small, medium to large (60, 120 and 180 grams, respectively) and prices start at Rp. 110,000. So whether you’re in the mood for a light snack or a monster meal, Wah Wah’s got you covered. Pair with truffle mashed potatoes or hand cut fries for a delightful meal.

PIT STOP There are two locations for this eatery – Seminyak and Uluwatu. The Uluwatu branch has two levels and an outside seating area under a large shady tree. High wooden stools line the interior and large bay windows open up for a garden view. Pit Stop’s Chicken Run burger (Rp. 30,000) is a crowd favorite, consisting of a fairly large breaded chicken breast smothered in guacamole and chili aioli sauce and then topped with fresh tomato and red onion slices. Their Happy Veggie burger (Rp. 25,000) is made from a chickpea and soya bean patty, grilled with eggplant and tangy coriander cream. Order a side of piping-hot fries (Rp. 25,000) for a hearty and wallet friendly meal. Pit Stop in Uluwatu is popular with hungry shirtless surfers looking to wolf down a meal after being out on the water. As for the Seminyak location, it is best visited to cure late night munchies (open 24 hours!). There isn’t much seating available, so grab a burger to go and devour it once you’ve arrived safely back at your accommodations.

SINGLE FIN Watching the alluring surf break as surfers execute daring tricks while you’re perched over the limestone cliffs isn’t the only benefit of dining Indian Ocean provides a stunning backdrop to the restaurant and its newly extended lounge deck. I run a live music venue and restaurant called the Jazz Café in Ubud, and I also run a company called Bali Musik Promosi, which hosts events like Bali Live Festival, acts as a booking agency, and in the near future will be managing artists and producing music. The Semenggoh Wildlife Centre is just a few miles outside of Kuching. Here, 29 orangutans live in 650 acres of preserved rainforest. You will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with them as they swing acrobat-like towards the various feeding stations. Orangutans are nomadic creatures and generally fairly solitary. The males seldom tolerate other males on their patch of jungle and at this particular center; aggression amongst the older alpha males is becoming more frequent. Having said that, if you have never had the experience of seeing an orangutan, this center will not disappoint (even though there can be up to five hundred tourists visiting during each feeding time).

ART HOTEL This month, Uma by COMO luxury hotel in Ubud will transform itself into an art gallery as it plays host to the works of Malaysian artist Dennis Ho in a solo art exhibition titled ‘Vivacious Rhythms of Bali: A Journey Through Art.’ Starting from the beginning of this month and running for the next three months, this collaboration between the hotel and the artist will be an effort to preserve Balinese culture, with 15% of all sales going towards the Balerung Foundation. Based in Peliatan, the foundation was established as a place for creative local talents to practice and perform. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
