THRISSUR POORAM FESTIVAL Thousands of people gathered here on Sunday the May 12th 2019 to witness the grand opening of the famed Thrissur Pooram, considered as the mother of all temple festivals. ‘Thechikkottukavu Rama chandran’, the controversial elephant which was earlier denied permission to take part in the festivities by the authorities on health grounds, ‘opened’ the annual festival at the ancient Vadakkumnathan temple here. Marking the ritual heralding of Pooram, Ramachandran, the tallest elephant of the state, pushed open the southern entrance of the shrine amidst thunderous cheers of the people gathered on the temple ground.

INDIA POST ISSUED STAMP ON VEDANTA DESIKA India Post has released a commemorative postage stamp on Vedanta Desika on 2nd May 2019.Sri Vedanta Desikan (Swami Desika, Swami Vedanta Desika, Thoopul Nigamaantha Desikan) (1268–1369) was a Sri Vaishnava guru/philosopher and one of the most brilliant stalwarts of Sri Vaishnavism in the post- Ramanuja period. He was a poet, devotee, philosopher and masterteacher (desikan). He was the disciple of kidambi Appullar, also known as Aathreya Ramanujachariar, who himself was of a master-disciple lineage that began with Ramanuja. Swami Vedanta Desika is considered to be avtar (incarnation) of the divine bell of Venkateswara of Tirumalai by the Vadakalai sect of Sri Vaishnavite. Vedanta Desika belongs to Vishwamitra gotra. Desika was born in the year 1268 CE, to a pious couple named Ananta Suri and Totaramba, who named him ‘Venkatanatha’. He composed over hundred works…. Sri Vaishnava books record how Goddess Lakshmi, known as Ranganayaki in the holy town of Sri Rangam, personally conferred on him the title of ‘Sarva-tantra-svatantra’ or master of all arts and crafts. It is also believed that Lord Rangantha who is the presiding Deity of Sri Rangam, awarded the title of ‘Vedanta Desika’, meaning: the supreme teacher of the conclusion of all knowledge. This was done because the Lord was immensely pleased when Desika debated with differing scholars, and established the supremacy of the path of loving surrender or prapatti-marga. He received other titles such as ‘Kavitarkika-kesari’ and ‘Kavitarkika-simham’, the lion amongst poets; and ‘Ramanuja-daya-patram’, the recipient of Ramanuja’s causeless mercy, given in a laudatory verse composed by the famous Brahma Tantra Svatantra Swami. DEITIES GIFT RESOUNDING VICTORY...

The Overwhelming majority which NDA got in the 2019 Elections is the divine blessing of Lakhs of Temple Deities whose rights have been assured by the BJP manifesto.... ★ “Unfortunately this has not been highlighted by any Media house. Hence, we are repeating the May 2019 Editorial for contextual reasons...

"Temples Protection Movement in a press release said on 1st April.... “Hindu Deity Rights is an election issue. Politicians Should Declare their Stand on Sabarimala Hindu Deity Rights; StateGovernments should exit out of Dewaswom Boards. Hindu Deity Rights is a National Election issue and the time has come for the Devotees to ask the Political parties to make their stand clear.” The Bharatiya Janata Party released its election manifesto titled Sankalp Patra and made the following historic promise on Sabarimala Deity and Devotee Rights “We will undertake every effort to ensure that the subject of faith, tradition and worship rituals related to Sabarimala are presented in a comprehensive manner before the Hon’ble Supreme Court. We will endeavour to secure constitutional protection on issues related to faith and belief” On the auspicious day of April 18th 2019 Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji met the delegation of Pandalam Royal Family members and assured the delegation that the custom and usage of Sabarimala shall be safeguarded through constitutional means. Subsequently the official twitter handle of the Pandalam Palace tweeted as follows after releasing a press note on the meeting. “Delegation has submitted the Representation that advocates for protecting the dignity and rights of devotees and deities. ....." One of the divine messages that the Electoral outcome on May 23rd 2019 is bound to give is that the Hindu Deity Rights is an important issue for Hindu Deities and Devotees. It needs to be addressed by the Central Government as per the dharmic assurance given by the Hon’ble Prime Minister. It is not a mere coincidence that the dharmic assurance on Sabarimala Deity Rights was given in the land belonging to Lord Padmanabha Swamy which is famous for the devotion of Shri Padmanabha Dasas by Shri Damodardas (Dasa of Lord Krishna the Hon’ble Prime Minister as suggested in his name) On behalf of crores of Hindu Devotees who have been silently agitating for the rights of Hindu Deities and to free Hindu temples from State Govt control, we pray to the Almighty that the dharmic assurance given on the auspicious April 18th 2019 in the land of Lord Padmanabha to the family members of Lord Ayyappa is acted upon by the new Government at the Centre post May 23rd with the highest priority that it deserves." !

GENEROUS GENIUS Dr. V.S. Karunakaran B.E.(Mech.), M.A. (Sanskrit), Ph.D Nadadoor Azhwan, also known as Varadavishnu, was the son of Ramanuja’s younger sister Kamala Devi. He always used to be by the side of Ramanuja at Srirangam doing all sorts of services to him, along with Mudaliandan, who was the son of Ramanuja’s another sister Bhoomi Devi. A situation arouse where Nadadoor Azhwan had to be away from Ramanuja to look after his ailing mother at Kancheepuram. After three months of ailment, Kamala Devi passed away. Nadadoor Azhwan completed all the rites for his mother and returned to Srirangam to pursue his services to Ramanuja. The day Nadadoor Azhwan returned to Srirangam was the star Punarvasoo of the Tamil month of Chithirai, which was the birth star of Mudaliandan and also the day of Sri Rama Navami. Nadadoor Azhwan first met his cousin Mudaliandan at Srirangam and greeted him. He then enquired him about the whereabouts of Ramanuja. Mudaliandan said, “Since today is Sri Rama Navami, Ramanuja has gone to the shrine of Rama, which is by the side of Chandra Pushkarini pond inside the temple complex of Srirangam! Come, let us go and offer our pranamas to him!” While they were proceeding towards the temple, Mudaliandan told Nadadoor Azhwan, “So many things have happened during the period when you were away from Srirangam! We missed you very badly. I will tell you in detail!” 0 0 0 Periya Nambi had directed Ramanuja to approach Thirukkoshtiyur Nambi to get the meaning of the Charama shloka (starting with the phrase “Sarvadharmaan parithyajya”…) said by Lord Krishna in the end of Bhagavad Gita. Ramanuja, myself and Koorathazhwan walked from Srirangam to Thirukkoshtiyur for seventeen times but each time Thirukkoshtiyur Nambi refused to give the meaning and kept on sending us back. On the eighteenth occasion, he had specifically advised Ramanuja to come alone to get the meaning of the Charama Shloka. In spite of that, he took me and Koorathazhwan with him. When Thirukkoshtiyur nambi questioned this action of Ramanuja, he replied, “Swami! Since I am a sanyasi, I have to take my dandam (holy stick) and pavitram (ring made of holy grass) with me wherever I go! Mudaliandan is my dandam and Koorathazhwan is my pavitram. That is why I have brought them with

me!” Thirukkoshtiyur Nambi then taught the meaning of Charama Shloka to Ramanuja, Mudaliandan and Koorathazhwan. He added, “Ramanuja! I have taught you a very secret doctrine. If anybody approaches you to know this, you should test them again and again like how I tested you and then only teach them the meaning! If you follow this correctly, I will teach you the deeper meanings of this Charama Shloka!” Ramanuja promised to abide by the conditions laid by Nambi. Then Nambi narrated all the hidden meanings. On the Very next day Ramanuja climbed the tower of Lord Sowmyanarayana temple of Thirukkoshtiyur. He exclaimed, “Oh! People! who have the desire to achieve liberation! Please come here! I will tell you the greatness of Charama shloka that will take you to emancipation!” Desirous people thronged at the feet of the tower there and Ramanuja spoke about the greatness of Charama shloka. They all listened to it and developed an intense desire to get initiated. On learning about this incident, Thirukkoshtiyur Nambi got angry and came there. He asked Ramanuja, “Eventhough I have warned you not to tell anyone about this without putting them to tests, you have gone against my words and spoken about the Charama shloka to all these people. Why did you do this?” Ramanuja said, “Already there are very few people who have inclination towards spirituality and liberation. If they are put to further hardships in the name of testing, we can’t find spiritual people anymore! Therefore, the desire to know shall have to be considered as the eligibility criteria for knowing spiritual matters! That’s why I invited all these people!” Thirukkoshtiyur Nambi said, “Whatever you say, you have gone against the words of your Guru. So you will attain hell only!” Ramanuja politely replied, “By your grace and with the knowledge of Charama shloka, all these people are going to attain liberation. It doesn’t matter, if I, a single person, reach hell for the welfare of all these people!” Thirukkoshtiyur Nambi was happy to the generosity of Ramanuja and he said, “I did all these just to show your generosity to the world. It is not enough if a teacher has good knowledge alone. He should be generous enough to take the knowledge

to all his students. You are a generous genius. You will be revered with the title EMPERUMANAR!” — After narrating this incident to Nadadoor Azhwan, Mudaliandan added, “Nadadoor Azhwan! Since you are also the nephew and a close aide of our Ramanuja, he will teach the esoteric meanings of the Charama shloka to you also!” Since Ramanuja was that much generous in delivering the knowledge to all people, Thiruvarangathu Amudhanar refers to him as “Vaazhgindra vallal” (Living philanthrophist) in Ramanuja Nootrandhaadhi. Although Ramanuja had ascended to the divine abode in 1137 CE itself, he still lives amidst us through his disciples, the descendants of the 74 simhasanaadhipathis appointed by him. All of them are as generous as Ramanuja in teaching the spiritual matters to their disciples. As Mudaliandan and Nadadoor Azhwan reached the banks Chandra pushkarini, they saw Ramanuja sitting on the steps of the pond. Both of them prostrarated before him. Parasara Bhattar, the son of Koorathazhwan, also came there. Ramanuja asked Parasara Bhattar, “I have asked you to write a commentary for the thousand names of the Lord! How much have you written?” Parasara Bhattar replied, “Upto the 218th name – Vaachaspathi! Interpreting it to give the glory of the incarnation of the Lord in His incarnation as Fish. “ Ramanuja said, “The next name is Udhaaradheehi. How shall we explain the very same name fitting Lord Matsya? He turned around and looked at Nadaooor Azhwan and said “Varadavishnu! You have come. We have been missing you for quite long. What will be your suggestion here?” “We can say the Lord as Matsya is both generous NEWS

and knowledgeable!” suggested Nadadoor Azhwan with all humility At that juncture, a couple of fishes jumped up from the pond of Chandra pushkarini and went inside the water. Ramanuja took that it was the divine indication of the Lord Matsya in appreciating this way of interpretation and told Parasara Bhattar, “Since the Lord in Matsyavatara was generous enough to teach all the hidden meanings of the scriptures to Manu and sages at the time of deluge, to ensure that they get carried over to the next cycle of creation, the next name ‘UDHAARADHEEHI” suits Him perfectly as suggested by our Nadadoor Azhwan!” Nadadoor Azhwan added “It may fit Matsya or not. But it will perfectly fit Emperumanar the knowledgeable teacher preaching from the tower to the public and ready to reach Hell by ensuring liberation to public”. Ramanuja looked at Mudaliandan and said “Oh It seems you have told all the developments to your dear cousin on his very return!” He then Added “In fact Lord Matsya, had shown the way to me that a teacher should be a generous genius fit to be called “UDHAARADHEEHI”. Parasara Bhattar recorded the very same meaning in his Sahasra nama Bhashya for this name. Nirukti summarizes this interpretation as:

ÃÁz|ú\y√Æ-ÃÁƒ|rΩÆÁoΩ GXÆoz à GtÁ∫áy: @ Those who want to have a good knowledge of scriptures and also generosity to teach those things to others like Emperumanar may meditate on the form of VISA Balaji at Chilkoor with the body as Matsya and chant UDHAARADHIYE NAMAHA. AHOBILAM AND AHOBILA MUTT - 78 – M.V. SOUNDARARAJAN

The whole story of Hiranyakashipu and Prahlada is about how materialistic people or Rajasa and Thaamasa character people are torturing the Sattvic spiritual beings and ultimately the consequence they face. Sattvic and devotional environment is very essential to protect Dharma in this whole country or for that matter any world. If there is Sattvic and devotional environment and attitude to not harm or cause pain to others, the Lord himself will come to protect such devotees and vanquish the hatred coming from Raajasa and Thaamasic people. Lets learn this lesson from the story as how Lord protected Prahlada and vanquished Hiranyakashipu. Story so far… Prahlada was having ecstatic love and devotion for Lord. He was saved right from the beginning even he was in the womb of his mother Kayadhu by Devarishi Narada’s intervention. He was sent to Gurukul to learn the material items and learn things in praise of his father which did not attract him at all. His father Hiranyakashipu was interested in his son getting material education but Prahlada was so devoted to the Lord Narayana that nothing but Lord’s thoughts could enter his mind which annoyed Hiranyakashipu. When Hiranyakashipu called Prahlada to find what he learnt he was shocked to see the knowledge of the child about Lord Vishnu and his devotion to him. He ordered his killing but his soldiers could not. He ordered the poisonous snakes to Bite Prahlada but in vain. He ordered elephants to trumple him, but could not succeed. He ordered Prahlada to be put in fire… THE MATTER OF AHOBILA NARASIMHA (contd..) VEDANTA DEEPIKAI, SAMBUDAM-4 (1914-1915) Hiranyakashipu ordered lighting of devilish fire with mystical powers in order to not leave Prahlada from being burnt to ashes. The demons lit pyre after stacking lots of wooden logs and making Prahlada stand on the platform of wooden logs. Hiranyakashipu ordered the god of Winds Vayu to blow air and perpetuate the fire fast and big. On the centre of the blazing fire, Prahlada stood with folded hands and praying to the Lord he addressed his father:

oÁo{  ƒu“å: úƒåzu∆oÁzDuú å™ÁÊ t“nÆfi ÙãooÁzD“Ê @ ú≈ÆÁu™ útΩ™ÁÀo∫mÁNw˛oÁuå ∆yoÁuå ÃÁ|um ut∆Á™ÏúÁuå@@

“Father!, this fire, even though it is grown with the help of wind and is blazing, it is not burning me. I am seeing in all directions a bed of lotus flowers laid down for me and this bed is quite cool and comfortable” The painful scene was witnessed by Chanda and Marka who were Prahlada’s teachers. They were unable to bear the scene and they uttered sweet words to Hiranyakashipu and requested him to send the child with them to Gurukula back. “O King! Don’t show your anger on this sweet child. Show your anger on the Devas so that they are under your control always. Send the child with us. We will teach him lessons in such a way that he would hate your enemies. We will make him your supporter. After all Childhood allows for all sorts of mistakes of a child using which he learns. You should not subject your child to such a great anger of yours. If he does not listen to us and forego the devotion to Hari ,we will perform black magic on him which can never be reversed by any power and he will surely die then” Listening to the words of Chanda and Marka, Hiranyakashipu ordered Prahlada to be brought back from the fire. Many demons got burnt during this act but nothing happened to Prahlada. He was hale and healthy and fresh from lotus bed. The King handed over Prahlada to the Gurus, ordered that Prahlada be initiated in Raja dharma and Gruhastha dharma which is political science and procedures for worldly life and returned to the palace. Chanda and Marka took Prahlada back to Gurukul and taught the sciences of materialistic world Dharma, Artha and Kaama which means items about properties of various materials in the world, money and wealth and pleasures. Prahlada did not like this education because he found that it is increasing desire and enemity and focus on worldly pleasures. While Chanda and Marka completed their classes and retire to their homes, Prahlada would take all his class mates on the pretext of playing and teach them devotion to Lord Hari. They also received this education with utmost care and devotion. “Oh! Children of Asuras! I will teach you about the greatest item in the whole universe. Don’t misunderstand me. I am not teaching you all this due to desire of any wealth. All living beings have systematic changes in their life. They start with

birth followed by childhood, youth, oldage and finally they perish. This type of changes in body are visible not only to me but also to you continuously. The person who dies gets reborn again. This is how the Vedas and puranas teach us. Logical debate also shows the same. How can one be born in this world without any reason? One has to search for the reasons of ones birth in his previous births. Till new birth the child is in womb. In this fashion starting from one birth to another the soul has seven stages and these are all to be known as stages of sorrow. When hungry people get solace by having food and when thirsty people get solace by drinking water. If they feel cold they go and stand near the fire. If we think, which ever item gives us pain during a time becomes the reason for eliminating pain at some other times. Therefore is there any item which can provide pure bliss? Due to diseases or other reasons for a person who is not hungry and not thirsty the food and water creates sorrow for him. Will people go near the fire during summer and realize bliss? The item known as happiness will always stop at ending of sorrow. Will beating become happiness? Will hunger and thirst become happiness? We decorate our bodies with various gems, clothes etc to be attractive. People who have love for this materialistic body made of flesh, bones, blood etc., will be enjoying even the life in hell. Happiness and sorrow are not in the objects. An item that is reason

for happiness at one time can become reason of sorrow at other times. If there is cold weather, the fire will be giving comfort. Similarly after thirst water and after hunger food gives comfort. Every item will be resulting in happiness if we have its corollary. When a person makes his heart happy and pleasing all the time , the person becomes so much healthy and kills the sorrow filled nerves in the heart. A wealthy landlord always has the knowledge of a lavish house and wealth which he possess with him eventhough it is not permanent for him. He laments when he loses the items either to fire, or to a robber and he keeps thinking of them all the time. Likewise when the soul is born it appears to become happy to possess a body, even though it is temporary. When the soul departs it goes to Naraka, and when subjected to treatment of Yama it looks towards next cycle of birth because of its limited knowledge of happiness like the momentarily wealthy landlord . Living in the womb itself is a big sorrow and cycle of birth and death is even more sorrowful for the soul . There is only one Lord Vishnu who can liberate you from this Samsara or worldly life.

߃oÁÊ N˛·Æoz

ÃnÆ™Ω uƒ…mÏ∫zN˛: ú∫ÁÆmÊ@

I am telling th truth. Only Lord Vishnu is the item we all need to be with. He is the one who should be approached and attained.

Ramanuja’s Journey to Sharada Peeth – Kashmir Serial - 22

CSL Narasimhan

Lord Ramanuja, the great Vaishnavite seer whose 1000 th year birth day was celebrated this year throughout India with pomp and glory. He was a seer who brought to light the concept of the whole universe as one family : Vasudhaiva kutumbakam and brought to light the right understanding and interpretation of Vedas and established equal chance for all living beings to attain salvation at the end of the current birth by surrendering before the Lord – Saranagathi. In order to putforth his understanding Lord Ramanuja had to first understand what his predecessor Acharyas have done to explain the Vedas. On this account he visited atleast twice to Sharada Peetham of Kashmir which was the seat of Goddess Saraswathi and a huge store house of learning known as Shree Bhandaram. VAK is attempting to bring the interesting items of this effort of Lord Ramanuja to its readers. Story so far: Obtaining the ordainment of Lord Varadaraja of Kanchi, Lord Ramanuja and Kuresa set out to study Boudhayana Vrutti Grantha at Sharada peetham in Kashmir. They had taken a fast route and reached Kashmir in just about 6 months time from Kanchi travelling almost everyday. They reached Chakradhara theertham at the outskirts of Kashmir and had been well received by a learned scholar Keshavacharya who till recently served as the Prime Minister of the King. He was trying to understand how Boudhayana vrutti Grantha is important and missed the attention of the great saint Yamunacharya. A plausible explanation provided to this seemed to be due to foreign invasions and unrest. While the discussions were happening a stealth person with royal looks visited the place, escaped and was captured. Next early morning when the three people went to Chakradhara theertha for morning rituals they met the royal family member Kshitiraja who was one of the Satraps and cousin of King AnanthadityaDeva. .Lord Ramujacharya had conversation with him about the purpose of his trip with the help of Keshavacharya . He agreed to help after learning their mission. The King who was already carried away by the Radiance of the Great Saint bowed before him and requested him to accept him as his disciple. He promised all help to the great Acharya and left to enquire about the thief who was none other than Bimba the brother of Prime Minister Haladhara who was in disguise. Bimba brings the news of defeat of Champa King and asylum of Champa prince in Kashmir. He also brings the news of several Buddhist monks coming in a scholarly debate expedition to conquer the scholars of mainland India all the way from Champa with an aim to convert all into Buddhism. Some of the Monks have challenged Kashmir scholars to have a scholarly debate with them. Bimba and Kshitiraja comes to request Ramanuja…. “Oh! Revered one! My associate Bimba travelled all the way from here to Champa which has now fallen into the hands of Buddhist kings of Dai Viet. They are getting significant strength from the Mongolians and the Chinese to propogate Buddhism. Many of our

neighbouring kings have strong influence of Buddhism. They don’t accept Vedas and keep saying that the whole world has emanated from Atoms (Paramaanu). They say they don’t harm people and Ahimsa is their motto but they are the ones who indulge in major violences, perfidy and are not bound by any dharmas prescribed by Vedas. We need your help to educate people on vedic dharma” requested Kshitiraja. “I see! Interesting! I know Buddhism has taken roots here and there have been several scholarly discussions which I participated in south and central parts of Bharat. After Adi Sankara Bhagavadpada propounded his Advaita I thought the conversions into Buddhism have come to a significant low. Buddhists monks are quite active in southern, southern central, eastern parts of Bharat. I also know that Jinas are quite active around northern parts and parts of Karnataka in the south. It is interesting to see battles being fought for religious conversions even in Buddhism. I know about Islam and also about other religions like Christianity. Buddhism has got strength because it emerged as a religion to oppose war. In Kalinga battle where many people were killed and Ahimsa was preached to Emperor Ashoka so that he can become more humane. It is interesting that spreading Buddhism has become a cause for wars” “Indeed Oh! Revered one!. The Champa prince is now here and has sought asylum and help from our emperor to reinstate the kingdom. Our warriors are also influenced by Buddhist thoughts and they are not willing to fight going such long distances. They don’t consider this as self defence”. Responded Kshitiraja The discussion about Buddhists continued and Kuresha was thinking about Advaita. he said to himself ‘Although Adi Sankara propounded Advaita and took on Buddhists to stop conversions away from Vedic path, he also in the bargain propounded something that is making the whole world imaginary. This also has no vedic sanction. How is he different from Buddhists? Anyway this is not the time to bring up this part of the discussion. Let me hear what the person who returned from Champa has to say further’ Kuresha with lot of curiousity was focusing on the speech of Bimba. “Oh! Revered ones! I was hearing all your discussions about Lord and the way you have interpreted Vedas and are providing insights into many items that were not clear to me. Please accept me as your disciple and help me by providing enough knowledge so that I can influence the minds of the soldiers to help infighting the new enemies. They are even dangerous than the Sultnate invasions as they are within us and creating rifts and weaknesses” said Bimba. Ramanuja looking at Bhimba responded ,”Actually Lord Gautama Buddha was right in saying Ahimsa is the biggest virtue of any king. It is also great that he preached and practiced. Actually he picked this only from Vedic path. What is not right in his teachings is, the items to say Vedas prescribe himsa as a ritual. Vedas does not do that. Vedas prescribe duties for any Kashtriya to protect the entire world. Wherever there

is Adharma or lack of justice it is the duty of Kshtriya clan to restore Dharma. In this process if the Kshtriya has to fight a war it will be considered as Dharma yuddha. There is no prescription to trouble innocent people and fight wars for the lust of land and expand kingdom. Friendship has been prescribed as the biggest virtue. Even Lord Rama fought the great demon king Ravana and earned the praise and lordship of all the three worlds. He did not keep it to him. He had given back to respective people like Vibheeshana, Indra and returned as king of Ayodhya. This is true Ahimsa practiced by him” “Oh! Revered one! In that case please help us!” requested both Bimba and Kshitiraja and they prostrated before the revered one. “How do you want me to help you?” enquired Lord Ramanuja “Oh! Revered one! Here scholarly debates in public are quite common and have long lasting influence on people. The Buddhists are gaining ground on their thought processes only via public debates. We will organize scholarly public debates between you and Buddhist scholars. When you win them over with your arguments it will have a large impact and eye opening for people and make them realize that they were not understanding the vedic path properly” requested Bimba. “So be it! I will participate in the debate. When and where will the debate be?” acceded Lord Ramanuja. “We will organize the debate near the capital where emperor’s associates, advisors and large armymen also can be benefitted from. Who knows, with the power of your revered ones, the emperor also may get attracted to it and get his eyes opened” Before going back to the Story, it is important for the Readers to note the Historical circumstance prevailing in those days. Just eight to nine years ago when the land was ruled by many powerful Hindu Kings together which involved the famous Emperors Raja Bhoja of Paramara dynasty also known as Vikramaditya or Param Dev or Paramara-Deva or titled ParameshvaraParamabhattaraka. Among Raja Bhoja, Sangrama Singh of Kashmir, Trilochan Pala of Gujarat who was related to Kashmir emperor and Rajendra Chola of Tanjore a major alliance was formed which included King of Champa also being a Suryavamshi. This alliance routed the Mahmud Ghazni invaders from Hansi, Thanesar and other areas and also fought a decisive battle against them 1043 CE to teach them a befitting lesson and make them not come back for atleast for a period of hundred and fifty years. During their period major threats to Hindu religion was coming from the Islamic states and some of the Buddhist kingdoms outside India such as the Mongolians which were also routed from time to time. It is part of this Alliance that Emperor Ananthadeva gave assylum to Prince Rudravarman of Champa and was thinking of organizing an army expedition to free Champa from the clutches of the invaders. The victory of the later expedition is recorded in Kalhana’s Rajatarangini as follows:

Y©úÁÆÁÊ ÃÁ¬ßÓúÁ¬Ê Gã™Ó¡ÆÁåãoßÓúuo:@ o•ëÁwú\Æy å√ÆÊ á∫Áკ∫ÁzúÆoΩ@@

™ãfi∆ÓãÆzå ∆Á{Æz|m ú∫tz∆z Ï ßÓúuo:@ “eüƒz∆ÁuãƒtáoΩ ÃÁzsßÓnNw˛XZ~ToÁzsÃNw˛oΩ@@ (Meaning: The King Anantha Deva went to Champa and eliminated the Saala King (invader representative) and he instated the new King Rudravarman there. During this expedition he followed sudden surprise attack technique with his valour) In those days similar to wars scholarly debates used to be intellectual wars or wars of minds and knowledge. These wars were fought by scholars of kingdoms to protect their religion, thoughts and culture. Many a cases these debates were hostile debates and not friendly. Often these debates lead to subservience of the loser to the Victor scholar and conditions typically would be acceptance of victor’s religion and thoughts, service to the Victor, shedding scholarly life forever etc. In some cases, If the kingdom where all the scholars belonging to the kingdom or invited by the kingdom gets defeated the king would be forced to accept the religious practice in his kingdom and provide permission for the victor scholars to profess the religion and the thought in the given kingdom. The message Bimba carried was about one such Buddhist monk scholarly expedition led by Bruhadvaasubandhu who learned Buddhism in China and later went to Vietnam to propogate Buddhism. He was a great scholar and has scholarship in all religious texts of those days which includes Vedas, Upanishads, epics, puranas belonging to Vedic tenets. He has won over many Vedic scholars in his expedition and had made them accept his superiority and made them subservient to him. This had many Advaitic scholars of those days such as Kashi Sankaracharya, Maha Sureshvaracharya. He was coming towards Kashmir empire to win over the scholars here and revive Buddhist traditions which was long ago eradicated by the Scholarly arguments and victories of Adi Sankaracharya. Bruhadvaasubandhu belonged to the Yogachara school of Buddhists. Brihadvaasubandhu was dreaded by many scholars in those days for his wrongful logical arguments which cannot be countered easily and hence he wins the arguments. Bimba and Kshitiraja once again prostrate before Lord Ramanuja, surrender to him and request: “Oh! Revered one, we are afraid of Brihadvasubandhu as even Sureshachariar, the great advaita scholar has been defeated by this Buddhist. He tactfully used the arguments of Sureshachariar and applied back on him for which Sureshachariar had no answer and he won. The greatest scholar in our kingdom today in the Advaitha school of thought is Shambhu swamy who belongs to Kashmir Sankara mutt. He has been a student under the great Sureshacharyar who lost to Brihadvassubandhu. So we are afraid we will lose and the king has to accept propogation of this non-vaidic tradition into the pure Kashmir kingdom which is haven of Goddess Saraswathi. Only you seem to be capable of warding off this evil on us. Please protect us by defeating the Buddhist scholar in the scholarly debate” “I will accept to participate in the debate under three conditions” said Lord Ramanuja . (to be continued...)

NEWS US report lauds Telangana priest’s gesture 'Chilkur event' showcases India's inter-religious harmony, says a US report TelanganaHead priest of Chilkur temple CS Rangarajan carrying a Dalit youth on his shoulders. Hyderabad: Last year’s re-enactment of the 2,700-yearold ‘Muni Vahana Seva’ to re-establish the greatness of Sanatana Dharma at the Chilkur Balaji temple here is being hailed as one of the few rare incidents that speak for India’s inter-religious harmony at a time when religious freedom in India is on a downward trend. The incident on April 17, which had the temple’s head priest CS Rangarajan carrying a Dalit youth Aditya Parasri on his shoulders into the temple’s inner sanctum as a huge crowd cheered, finds mention in the comments by US Commission on International Religious Freedom chair Tenzin Dorjee in the commission’s report released recently. Along with incidents such as a Muslim village donating land and money for a Hindu temple in Bihar and of a Hindu temple donating land for a mosque in Punjab, the Hyderabad incident, Dorjee notes, speaks for India’s multi-faith civilisation, religious freedom, and inter-religious harmony. This assumes significance, because the report otherwise has not so inspiring things to note about India. The report, which says the Commission has for a decade not been granted the opportunity to interact nor visit India in any official capacity, says in 2018, religious freedom conditions in India continued a downward trend. “The history of religious freedom in India has come under attack in recent years with the growth of exclusionary extremist narratives — including, at times, the government’s allowance and encouragement of mob violence against religious minorities — that have facilitated an egregious and ongoing campaign of violence, intimidation, and harassment against non-Hindu and lowercaste Hindu minorities.” “In 2018, approximately one-third of State governments increasingly enforced anti-conversion and/or anti-cow slaughter laws discriminatorily against non-Hindus and Dalits alike. Further, cow protection mobs engaged in violence predominantly targeting Muslims and Dalits…,” the Commission says in its findings, adding that mob violence was also carried out against Christians under accusations of forced or induced religious conversion. “In cases involving mobs killing an individual based on false accusations of cow slaughter or forced conversion, police investigations and prosecutions often were not adequately pursued,” it notes, also noting that religious freedom conditions varied dramatically from State to State, with some States continuing to be relatively open and free for religious minorities, while others—if taken on their own—had “systematic, ongoing, egregious” violations of religious freedom. The Commission has placed India on its Tier 2 category for engaging in or tolerating religious freedom violations that meet at least one of the elements of the “systematic,

ongoing, egregious” standard for designation as a “country of particular concern,” or CPC, under the International Religious Freedom Act (IRFA). (TelanganaToday : 27th May 2019)

teachings of great saints like Sri Vedanta Desikan The Vice President expressed hope that organizations like Sri Vedanta Desikan Manipaduka Indraprastha Trust would propagate Sri Vedant Desikan’s timeless message to the younger generation. ‘It is only through such understanding that the true greatness of our illustrious land can be fully appreciated’, he said. The Vice President also stressed that massive public awareness and education campaigns must be undertaken to bring to the fore luminaries such as Sri Vedant Desikan who have shaped our Bharat into a “Jnana Bhoomi”. Shri Mohan Parasaran, Former Solicitor General of India, Shri Vishvapavan Pati, Additional Director General, Department of Posts, Shri R. Mukunthan, General Secretary, Delhi Tamil Sangam, Shri R. Sriraman, Founder Trustee, Sri Vedanta Desikan Manipaduka Indraprastha Trust and others were present on the occasion. The following is the full text of the speech: It is indeed a great pleasure and privilege to release a postage stamp to commemorate the 750th birth anniversary of Sri Vedanta Desikann. Sri Vedanta Desikan is one of the most prominent preceptors in the Srivaishnava tradition, and one of the most effulgent luminaries to have graced this land. A precocious child, Venkatanatha, who later became Sri Vedanta Desikann, had mastered the Vedas, the Vedangas, the 4000 Divya Prabhanda and all the existing schools of Indian philosophy such as Nyaya, Vaisheshika, Purva Mimamsa, Yoga and Sankhya by the age of 20. What is so striking about his life is that while he could have easily lived a life of great prosperity due to his unprecedented fame, he and his wife, Thirumangai chose to live a very simple life. Sri Vedanta Desikann’s scholarship was truly outstanding. He wrote poems, prose, drama, epics, commentaries, scientific texts and philosophical treatises in Sanskrit, Tamil, Prakrit and Manipravalam. It is no wonder that he was awarded many titles for his astonishingly vast range of achievements. He was celebrated as ‘sarva-tantra-svatantra’or master of all arts and crafts; awarded the title ‘kavi tarkika-kesari’, the lion amongst poets and logicians; and glorified as ‘ramanujadaya-patram’, the recipient of Ramanuja’s blessings. His mastery and brilliance brought him fame and distinction. But what is remarkable is his humility and genuine non-attachment to worldly honours. Vedanta Desikan rejected the offer of joining the court of the King of Vijayanagara and considered that the greatest treasure he had was the grace of the Lord. His magnum opus, the Rahasya Traya Sara, is a masterly treatise on Prapatti or surrendering oneself to the divine. But Vedanta Desikan was much more than a spiritual teacher. He was a multi-faceted personality-- a scientist, a logician, a mathematician, a sculptor, a civil engineer, a poet, a literary genius, a linguist, a geologist, a dietician, a behavioural scientist, a military strategist and much more. We are truly blessed that we are commemorating today this great legendary icon, an outstanding genius who greatly enriched our cultural and intellectual heritage. His masterpiece, Paduka Sahasram, reveals his poetic

eloquence and his mathematical ingenuity. In two verses in this collection, Sri Vedanta Desikann gave a solution to a mathematical problem that was solved five centuries later by another mathematician, Leonard Euler. Desikan showed his knowledge of the arts and sciences through other works such as Silpartha-saram, a treatise on sculpture, and Bhugola-nirnayam – a research text on geography. Taking cues from the Vedic scriptures, Vedanta Desikan authored Aahaara Niyamam that detailed how different food items help in maintaining a healthy mind and a disease-free life. His ‘Subhashita Neevi’ contains a fund of moral and ethical advice which is relevant and practical. Desikan’s talent as a military strategist came to the fore during the repeated invasions of the holy city of Srirangam by the forces of the Delhi Sultanate. Before the forces of marauding invaders like Mallik Kafur and Ulugh Khan arrived at Srirangam in 1327, Desikan hid the main Deity of the temple behind a newly built wall, and escaped with rare manuscripts that would otherwise have been destroyed by the invaders. The smaller festival Deities were smuggled out by other devotees and carried to Tirupati, where they were worshipped secretly for many years. Incidents from Desikan’s life demonstrate many qualities that we should try to imbibe. Leading a very active life and achieving success in diverse fields, he scaled the greatest spiritual heights as well as other fields of knowledge and human welfare. His versatile intellectual and creative output did not make him vain or pompous. He remained a humble devotee of the Lord he believed in. Humility was his hallmark, simplicity his strength. The Sri Vaishnava philosophy that Saint Ramanuja initially propounded got a much wider audience with Vedanta Desikann’s writings and preachings. One of the essential features of this philosophy was the aspect of inclusion. Anyone, irrespective of caste and creed could join the Sri Vaishnava fold. This is a truly democratizing movement that obliterated caste distinctions. As Sri Vaishnavites laud him, he has been an extraordinary individual who has shown us a new path towards human fulfillment and spiritual upliftment. It is as if Lord Srinivasa Himself has appeared as an Acharya to illuminate the paths of devotion and dedication, of selfless love and affection for humanity and a total submergence in divine ambience. I am glad that the Department of Posts has bought out this postage stamp to commemorate the 750th birth anniversary of this great saint. I wish this provides an opportunity for all of us to deepen our understanding of Sri Vedanta Desikan’s contribution to the cultural tradition of our great land and hopefully, organizations like Sri Vedanta Desikan Manipaduka Indraprastha Trust will propagate his timeless message to the younger generation. It is only through such understanding that the true greatness of our illustrious land can be fully appreciated. We need a massive public awareness and education campaign to bring to the fore such luminaries who have shaped our Bharat into a “Jnana Bhoomi”. Jai Hind ! (02-May-2019)

REVIVAL OF A VEDA PATASALA A young 30 year old has just begun a long journey in his quest to protect the Sastras. R Neelakantan has quit a high paying job at a Vedic Patshala in Madras and moved to Pazhur, a remote town on the Western outskirts of Tiruchirapalli in an effort to revive the once renowned Patshala. Not so much in the distant past, the entire town of Pazhur was filled with Vedic Vidwans and the streets reverberated with Vedic recital. For almost half a century, the patshala in Pazhur ranked among the best in the State. Angarai V Krishna Ganapadigal served there as a teacher for 45years and produced several eminent Vedic scholars. His son, popularly referred to as Matunga Ganesh Vadhyar, is said to be the Number One Vedic Teacher in Bombay. Just under a century ago Ramachandra Iyer, the then collector of Karur, with an intention to protect Vedantham created a Vedic Patshala in Pazhur. He created a trust, allocated lands in the town and directed that the income from the lands be handed over to the Vedic Trust to run the Patshala. The Trust still owns 4 houses in Pazhur. This was one of the only three renowned Brahmin run Patshalas in the State, the others being the ones in Thiruvidaimaruthur and Manakkal, near Tiruvarur, that consistently doled our Vedic Scholars in good numbers. Quality of Pazhur Patshala The story goes that the Chettiar Patshalas that were in dominance in Tamil Nadu would not accept any break away students from the Pazhur Patshala. The view was that those who could not survive Pazhur were unlikely to survive elsewhere such was the parental guidance of the Acharyas at Pazhur. It was one of the few Patshalas in the previous century that combined both Vedas and Sastras. However since the 1980s, the Patshala saw a downturn coinciding with the trend of the traditionalists moving away into full time academics. Neelakantan, who belongs to the fifth generation of Vedic Scholars, has set out on an onerous task of reviving the century old patshala. He studied only till class 2 in a formal school and moved to the Raja Patshala in Kumbakonam for Vedic Education at the age of seven. Later he completed class X, Class XII and MA through the Open University Model (NIOS). After 8 years at the Raja Patshala, he learnt Sanskrit from Mullai Vasal Krishnamurthi Sastrigal. Neelakantan then moved to Pune where for 5 years he was under President awardee Devadutta Gannda Patil. He learnt Nyaya Sastras and Meemaamsa Sastras at the Sanskrit College in Madras.... The wife's supportive role He was already earning a high salary in Madras and his friends and relatives warned him about the likely lifestyle changes in a remote location such as Pazhur, and discouraged him from the move. But Neelakantan was not to be undone by such comments. His young wife, much against the current trend has supported him in his decision and happily moved to Pazhur in June this year with their two daughters. His wife also doubles up as a full time cook for the entire bunch of students at the Patshala. For the last four months, she has been waking up early morning and taking care of the entire requirements of the students including cooking for all of them, in addition to taking care of her two young daughters. Neelakantan has already undertaken an oath that he will get his two daughters married only to Vaideehas, so this tradition continues. Gurukulam Model He has clear views on how a Patshala should be run in the current scenario “Each student has different capabilities and interest.... Neelakantan talks personally each day to each of his students in an effort to create and sustain their interest in Vedas and Sastras. And the result, even at this very early stage, is there to see. The students seem to have bonded really well with the Guru and are seen with him all the time discussing very issues relating to the Vedas and Sastras. It is a vibrant environment at the Patshala and there is chanting all through the day. Neelakantan conducts a surprise inspection at 3pm with one of his students to see where he has reached that day. And tells him in a friendly tone that he will do another re-check later in the evening on the progress made. That's truly inspiring for any student, for a Guru to pay such personalised attention through the day. Shortage of Experts on Sastras There are serious issues relating to protection of Vedas and Sastras. He bemoans the fact that in the last few decades only five students have completed both Vedas and Sastras in the entire State. In the century gone by, when there were doubts on Sastras, there were real experts who would come out and clarify. Currently, if there are serious doubts on any issues relating to the 18 Puranas, there is none to look up to. There are no experts on Dharmas Sastras. At the Thiruvanaikaval Patshala, in the last 35 years, prior to its revival in 2012, only two students had appeared for the Vedic Examination. Since the time his brothers took charge of the Patshala in 2012, 8 students have already presented the examination, a dramatic transformation indeed. Let us all wish Neelakantan all success...May the Almighty bless all such divine endeavours. (Courtesy..prblogspot) Rangarajan S Chilkur

HAVE YOU READ THE BOOK ....... "THE LORD AT YOUR CALL" Vol. - II We at VAK are blessed to bring out the second volume in the series of books on Anecdotes on Vishnu Sahasranama authored by Sri V S Karunakaran Swamy. Sri V S Karunakaran Swamy started this mammoth never before project of explaining the significance of the 1000 names. Since the English meaning of this hymn is given in this work, many in this country and those living abroad, will welcome it. Every name is a mantra by itself, some with two and some ranging up to eight words. The hymn is an antidote for all ills. As the author mentioned the benefits which will accrue by reciting the various name of Vishnu, it has been practically experienced by Devotees at Chilkur Balaji temple who are the regular readers of VAK in which these Anecdotes have been serialised. There is immortal ecstasy that can be experienced by chanting these names individually. The second Volume has been released on 6th September 2017, as a part of the Saptatipoorthi celebrations of the Author Sri V S Karunakaran. You can find the devotees chanting these names endlessly at the Balaji Temple Chilkur. The benefit of chanting individual names for particular needs to be granted by Almighty is being practiced and is yielding expected results. Balaji our Saviour...

''PѨ^•ƒùO^Œ=Ù_»∞ zÅ∞‰õÄi ÉÏÖÏr——

Swamy, we approached some known people for buying a house for our daughter. Since they are known to us for many years, we gave the entire amount to them. They backed out on the day of Registration. Later some troubles started. They started telling us that they would not sell the plot. We pleaded with them to give our money back. They troubled us a lot and did not repay.
